In this episode, I speak with Lauren Shields, Head of Solutions Delivery at Benchling, an R&D cloud software company headquartered in San Francisco. Growing up, Lauren always wanted to become a scientist and a professor. She majored in biology as an undergraduate at MIT, and went to graduate school at the University of California, San Francisco, where she earned a PhD in biomedical sciences. However, along the way she discovered that although she enjoyed the intellectual aspects of science, working in the lab did not resonate with her. Consequently, she began exploring career options outside of academia. We'll talk about her experience making the transition to industry, and of course find out about what her job is like.
“The healing journey may start off with changing our thoughts to being more positive, affirming our greatness, and more self care, but to fully love and accept oneself requires meeting and healing our shadow.” Psychologist Carl Jung first described the shadow as the unconscious and disowned parts of our personalities that EGO fails to see, acknowledge, and accept. Subconsciously, we walk through life projecting our wounds onto our relationships and situations that we experience, seeing them only through the lens of these hidden parts of ourselves that we don't even know exists. Have a habit, behavior, or pattern you just can't shake? It may be because you've got an old story planning in your shadow, constantly guiding you to recreate past trauma that you've experienced. In today's episode, my friend Lauren Shields shares her wisdom and practices to helping you meet your shadow. Lauren Shields always struggled to share her journey as a mixed woman. Her mother is Irish and English, her father is African-American, and Native American (Cherokee and Choctow lineage). As she says, "I wasn't black and white enough, and had zero connection to my indigenous side." What Kim didn't see coming during their conversation however was when Lauren revealed that this lifelong struggle created a lot self-hatred toward herself. But with a little help from her black friends, and a retreat doing Ayahuasca , Lauren has since found power and redemption in accepting all the ethnicities she represents. Fantastic and honest discussion! Lauren Shields: https://www.merakimamacollective.com/

Modesty can be empowering.Religious modesty can support feminism. Many religions encourage a simple, modest appearance. Lauren Shields conducted an experiment by exploring modesty. Instead of styling her beauty for others to consume, she opted to cover her arms, legs and hair. She skipped cosmetics for nine months. As a result, she no longer viewed her appearance as part of her identity. The transition to a new look was difficult. She adhered to a clean, simple, put-together outfit while sticking to her own rules for the experiment. Listen as Lauren joins Dr. Pamela Peeke to share her personal journey with the modesty experiment and “beauty suit.” Sponsor: Smarty Pants Vitamins
In episode 18, we talk with author Lauren Shields about her upcoming book entitled, “The Beauty Suit: How My Year of Religious Modesty Made Me a Better Feminist.” Lauren investigated modesty practices of Islam, Judaism and Christianity and then took off what she calls The Beauty Suit for a year. Her experiment turned into personal liberation and lasting change. Learn more about Lauren at www.laurenjshields.com.
