Hip hop and classical music come together in the hybrid chamber music of W4RP Trio. The new record, featuring the spoken word artist DJ LiKWUiD, is called Sermon of the MatriarK and it is a celebration of powerful female characters in the African diaspora. But it's also a celebration of the ways in which artists can move freely across genre lines – and possibly, upending even your most basic assumptions about what a band is. The W4RP Trio actually has four members, who play their new songs, along with the rapper and award-winning artivist LiKWUiD, in-studio. Set list: 1. Up 2. Here's One 3. Gimme Dat, excerpt

Who's taking and killing them, and why isn't more being done? News Beat podcast—Manny's other love—speaks with Native women on both sides of the border who break down the causes and perpetrators of these atrocities and seek justice for the many mothers, daughters, sisters, aunties, and nieces, missing or slain. Duana Johnson comforts families of those who've vanished from reservations throughout the U.S. Northwest. Mary Kathryn Nagle battles for justice on behalf of the mothers, daughters, sisters, aunties, and nieces stolen, tortured, raped, and killed. This special episode of the News Beat podcast delves into the mystery, horrors, and heartbreak defining the crisis, searching for answers to these and many other haunting questions centuries in the making. In commemoration of this year’s Juneteenth, as countless people flood the streets all across this country calling for justice, equality, and an end to police brutality, among other demands—testament that the struggle is far, far from over—we’re re-releasing an episode that documents proof of this modern-day, state-sponsored slavery, highlighting a sinister and covert FBI initiative codenamed COINTEPRO, short for Counter Intelligence Program. The episode features interviews with Steven Renderos, executive director of nonprofit national racial justice hub Media Justice; Michael German, a fellow with the nonprofit Brennan Center for Justice’s Liberty and National Security Program, and former FBI special agent; and Glen Ford, acclaimed journalist, political activist and executive editor of progressive online video news network Black Agenda Report. Our musical guest artist for this episode is New York-based hip hop fusion artist, DJ, educator, activist, and one of our Artists in Residence, LiKWUid. BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the LiKWUiD interview session! We were first introduced to this MC, DJ, songwriter & educator when we rocked a show in ATL alongside her crew, The Hunger Division, back in January of 2015. When her new album, “Fay Grim” dropped on Hipnott Records at the top of 2017, we had to have her on the show. We rap about LiKWUIiD’s South Carolina roots, her move to NYC after college and how she made the connection with production team 2 Hungry Bros, who held down production duties for the new album. We also drop down a few different rabbit holes as we chat about the political climate in NYC at the moment, why LikWUiD woke up one day and decided to not go into work and her favorite way to drink bourbon! This isn’t one to miss folks, so push play, listen up and go cop “Fay Grim” without delay!
