Hip Hop What Ifs: What If Lauryn Hill Never Stopped Rapping?

In this episode of "Hip Hop What Ifs," hosted by D and 12Kyle, the discussion turns to the question, "What if Lauryn Hill had continued her rap career?" They delve into the impactful yet complex legacy of Lauryn Hill in the hip-hop world. As they explore the trajectory of Hill's career, from her groundbreaking work with the Fugees to her transformative solo album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill," listeners are invited to consider how Hill's choices might have reshaped the landscape of female rap. The episode navigates through Lauryn Hill's rise in the music industry, touching on key moments like the Fugees' success with their album "The Score," and Hill's departure from music to focus on personal life. With in-depth analysis, the hosts ponder the potential influence Hill could have wielded in contemporary hip-hop, drawing parallels to artists like Foxy Brown, Lil' Kim, and later figures such as Rapsody. They also entertain the idea of Hill making a comeback and what that would mean in today's musical context. Ultimately, this engaging dialogue highlights Hill's enduring influence and the hypothetical shift she could have sparked in women's rap music.   Email the show at hiphopwhatif@gmail.com Follow SOLC Network online Instagram: https://bit.ly/39VL542                          Twitter: https://bit.ly/39aL395                          Facebook: https://bit.ly/3sQn7je                To Listen to the podcast Podbean https://bit.ly/3t7SDJH                      YouTube http://bit.ly/3ouZqJU                      Spotify http://spoti.fi/3pwZZnJ                     Apple http://apple.co/39rwjD1  IHeartRadio http://ihr.fm/2L0A2y

Welcome Back to the Record Report! As 2024 wraps up, join Ahmad and Vance as they dive into the most significant moments in hip-hop this year. From the explosive return of regional rap to unforgettable feuds and the rise of women in rap, this episode is your ultimate year-end recap. 2024 saw a powerful resurgence of regional rap. Atlanta stayed on top, with Latto and Future leading the charge, while LA's Kendrick Lamar and G Perico proved the West was still a force. New York artists like Cash Cobain brought fresh energy, Detroit continued its rise, and Florida artists like Bossman D Low and Lul Tyler added their unique flair. Texas saw Megan Thee Stallion dominate alongside breakout star Mexican OT, while Memphis' GloRilla carried the torch for Southern rap. TDE had a standout 2024, with Kendrick Lamar delivering another masterpiece and Doechii cementing her superstar status. SZA's chart dominance continued while Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul dropped highly anticipated albums. The celebration of Isaiah Rashad's Cilvia Demo anniversary added to TDE's impressive year. This year, women in rap set the standard. GloRilla and Rapsody delivered potential album-of-the-year contenders, while Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj, Flo Milli, and Latto kept the genre buzzing. Women in hip-hop shattered ceilings proved their staying power and redefined the game. 2024 will forever be remembered for the historic feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. This wasn't just a battle of diss tracks; it became a defining cultural moment that shifted the hip-hop landscape and sparked endless conversations. On Wednesday, June 19th, 2024, Kendrick Lamar will grace the stage for The Pop Out, a one-off concert to be held at Kia Forum in Inglewood, California. Considered a Juneteenth celebration, it will be K. Dot's first major performance after his highly publicised surgical execution of Canadian rapper Drake.Sumit and Chris have a bit of fun and imagine what the anticipated show will look and feel like. They discuss opening and closing tracks, deep cuts, guest appearances, special moments, and more. In typical fashion, they also go off on tangents praising the new Rapsody album, discussing Pete Rock's consistency, DJ Premier's 'evolving' sound, and a few other useless tidbits. As K. Dot so eloquently said, "sometimes you have to pop out"... you know the rest, and if you don't, it's your fault. In Vibe: The Sound and Feeling of Black Life in the American South (University of Mississippi Press, 2023), Corey J. Miles narrates how southern Black sound, feeling, and being is constantly policed, surveilled, and criminalized. In doing so, he re-narrates the region as the "carceral South," to capture the ways people in the South and beyond can feel the emotional weight of the criminalization of Blackness. Where exactly does the South begin and end? Current maps are too rigid to account for the ways Black people have built the South while being simultaneously excluded from it.  Drawing from the different ways Black artists in the 2-5-2 area code in North Carolina use "vibe" as a mode of knowing and communication, Miles illustrates how Black feeling and unfeeling offer entry points into the contemporary South that challenge static and monolithic notions of the region. Placing the local artists in conversation with other southern cultural creators such as 2 Chainz, Rod Wave, and Rapsody, these ethnographic narratives demonstrate that there are multiple Souths, with overlapping and distinct commitments to working through pain, sound, and belonging. Pain music, a subgenre of trap music, is used to take the listener to moments of violence to allow them to hear the desires, anger, and silences that bind Black life in community. Through conceptions of ratchet, hood, and ghetto, Black artists turn away from respectable images and unmap the South. In trap music, they move the South to a space where multiple modes of being find respect and care. Learn more about your ad choices.
