With a culture war heating up in an election year, the ideological battle over hot button topics like Critical Race Theory, the 1619 Project, and reparations intensifies, there remains one historical fact that is constantly glossed over or just outright ignored on both sides of the battle. The complicated history of Native American enslavement. A complex narrative that spans beyond the American South, where the plantation economy had a stronghold on the institution of enslavement, Native Americans were bought and sold throughout the Americas, Spain and even parts of Africa. In this upcoming episode we'll take a deep dive into the forgotten history of Native American enslavement.      Keith Pluymers Keith Pluymers is an expert on early modern history & environmental history, professor of history at Illinois State University, and author.   Hayley Negrin Hayley Negrin specializes in Native American history, slavery, and the history of women and gender in the Atlantic World. Her current book project investigates the transformation of Indigenous kinship ties and politics under English chattel slavery in early North America.   About TIR Thank you, guys, again for taking the time to check this out. Only 5 months ago the ascendancy of Pedro Castillo from primary school teacher to president of Peru was seen as a victory for the poor and working class and a sign of a new rising Pink Tide in Latin America. Less than a year in office Castillo is facing challenges from the far-right opposition party calling for his impeachment, as well turmoil from within Castillo's own Peru Libre socialist party that until the last minute was in support of Castillo's ouster from office.   Peru, a country that has seen 4 presidents in the last 3 years has a long sordid history of corrupt leaders and congressional governments. In less than six months Castillo's approval rating has dropped to its lowest point yet at a mere 25%. However, while many are unhappy with the young administration of Castillo, there is still a large contingent that want to see Castillo make good on his campaign promises and avoid giving power to what the majority of Peruvian citizens feel is a far more corrupt congress.   Will the reign of Pedro Castillo end like his predecessors in scandal and impeachment? Is the far right and oligarchic class too powerful for Castillo and the Peru Libre socialist party of overcome? Is there validity in Castillo's claims that his poor lower-class campesino background is the impetus for his attempted ouster? We'll ask these questions and more. This is Revolution.   Follow Camillo Gómez on Twitter: @camilomgn   About TIR Thank you, guys, again for taking the time to check this out. We appreciate each and every one of you. TIR PRESENTS BEST OF 2021: Capitalism, Healthcare and The Largest Wealth Transfer w/ Billie Mintz

THIS IS REVOLUTION >podcast

As the Boomer generation hits retirement age, we're looking at a 68 trillion dollar transfer of wealth to the younger generation. THE GUARDIANS is a revealing investigative documentary set in Las Vegas, Nevada that exposes allegations of corruption within the Nevada Guardianship and Family Court systems involving the legal kidnapping of elderly people. The film shines a light on a lucrative business that drains seniors' life savings and robs them of their freedoms. Victims and their families are caught in a scheme that has allowed corrupt court-appointed guardians to take total control over their healthcare and financial decisions. Armed with court orders obtained under dubious circumstances, guardians are able to forcibly remove elderly wards from their homes, isolate them from their families and systematically empty their bank accounts. In an unfolding saga that reaches the top level of government, a growing number of Las Vegas victims come together to seek justice, restitution, and freedom. Through their fight, the film exposes the scope of the systemic abuse of some of the most vulnerable members of our society. As our aging population is about to record the largest transfer of wealth in history, we must protect them and their families from those that have been using a broken system to take advantage. For 40 years nothing and no one has stood in their way. Until now.   About Filmmaker Billie Mintz: BILLIE MINTZ is an award winning filmmaker who has produced and directed feature length documentaries and narrative short films. He is currently a correspondent on the recently rebooted National Geographic show “Explorer”. Billie has dedicated his career to social justice, raising public consciousness, and advocating for those who have no voice. His belief in the power of story to inspire policy change is a driving force in his life as a filmmaker. His first feature, Surviving The Treatment (60 min, 2008) has been a successful tool in helping young cancer survivors, and their families, return to life after the treatment. His second documentary, The Ponzi Scheme (70 min, 2010) is an investigation into victims of personal financial fraud. His latest feature documentary, Jesus Town USA (80min, 2014,) executive produced by SKY ATLANTIC, had its world premiere at AMDOCS (The American Documentary Film Festival in Palm Springs) and international premiere at Hot Docs. Dr. Jack Rasmus, professor in economics and politics at St. Mary's College in California, joins us to discuss the economy. Dr. Jack reminds us that he predicted the death of the Build Back Better legislation. He also goes over his predictions for the next phase of the US economic and political crisis. Jim Kavanagh, writer at thepolemicist.net and CounterPunch and author of "Reconcile This: Lessons From the Latest Legislative Debacle," joins us to discuss censorship. In another major EU blow to press freedom, European satellite operator Eutelsat has removed the German-language RT DE channel from its platform under pressure from Berlin. Greg Palast, investigative reporter, joins us to discuss voting. The Brennan Center for Justice is reviewing state and local legislation and predicting a tidal wave of GOP-sponsored voter suppression starting in 2022. They say that empowering non-state partisan actors to intervene in the election process will be one of the principal methods used to create hurdles for minorities and youthful voters.Robert Fantina, journalist and Palestine activist, joins us to discuss Israel. We discuss the issue of settlements in the occupied territories and their designation under international law. Miko Peled argues that the term "illegal settlements" is misleading because there is no such thing as "legal settlements" under international law. Filmon Zerai, independent blogger with commentary for On Horn of Africa & Global Politics, joins us to discuss Ethiopia. In his Black Agenda Report article, Filmon Zerai says that "The best way for leftist anti-imperialists to support Ethiopia is to not take a hardline position on the internal politics of the country." Since the rise of Trump in 2016 debate has increased in liberal and left political spaces pertaining to the rise of a fascist moment in America. With the election of Joe Biden in 2020, some believed the Trump threat had abated. Then on January 6, 2021, the Trump insurrection at the US Capitol building took place, alarming many Americans. With Biden's agenda not generating enthusiastic support as his poll numbers drop, the reactionary right is on the march again as recent electoral victories have served as an unfavorable referendum on Biden. The question of healthcare in the United States has been one of the preeminent questions in American politics. In his latest book, To Govern the Globe: World Orders and Catastrophic Change, historian Alfred McCoy explains how a succession of catastrophes—from the devastating Black Death of 1350 through the coming climate crisis of 2050—has produced a relentless succession of rising empires and fading world orders. During the long centuries of Iberian and British imperial rule, the quest for new forms of energy led to the development of the colonial sugar plantation as a uniquely profitable kind of commerce. In a time when issues of race and social justice have arisen with pressing urgency, the book explains how the plantation's extraordinary profitability relied on a production system that literally worked the slaves to death, creating an insatiable appetite for new captives that made the African slave trade a central feature of modern capitalism for over four centuries.   After surveying past centuries roiled by imperial wars, national revolutions, and the struggle for human rights, McCoy seeks to prognosticate about the future, highlighting the ways in which climate change and changing world orders will shape the life opportunities for younger generations. What does the past tell us about the future of the global order? How and why is this order changed? And what will this mean for future generations?   Alfred McCoy Alfred W. McCoy holds the Harrington chair of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he teaches classes on the Vietnam War, modern empires, and U.S. foreign policy. Most recently, he is the author of "In the Shadows of the American Century: The Rise and Decline of U.S. Global Power" (Chicago, 2017). He is also the author of "Policing America's Empire: The United States, the Philippines, and the Rise of the Surveillance State" (Madison, 2009) which won the Kahin Prize from the Association for Asian Studies. His best-known book, "The Politics of Heroin," stirred controversy when the C.I.A. tried to block its publication back in 1972, but it has remained in print for nearly 50 years, been translated into nine languages, and is generally regarded as the "classic" work on global drug trafficking.   About TIR Thank you, guys, again for taking the time to check this out. Martin Luther King, Jr once said, ‘I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character'. This is one of the aspirations many had when they fought against racism. They understood that for this aspiration to succeed everyone must participate in the project of completely transforming society to eradicate racial divisions and achieve equal treatment. Today, with the increasing demand to recognize the seemingly insurmountable gap between black people and white people, identity-based anti-racism has become more of a hindrance than a solution for a better and freer world for us all. The shift, from aspiring to transform social organization in order to transcend racial divisions to demanding recognition of racial divisions and identities and protection for minorities, represents the defeat of the universalist and radical politics of the past. Racial thinking, actively promoted by racists, has now become an acceptable tool for identity-based anti-racist activists in their demand for representation, diversity, inclusivity, segregation and safe spaces. Christine Louis-Dit-Sully examines the origins of racial thinking and the relationship between race and culture, she asks us to recognize that racial thinking is not the only way of understanding ourselves and the world around us.   Christine Louis-Dit-Sully Christine Louis-Dit-Sully grew up in the 'banlieue 93', a working-class area near Paris, France that used to be demonized but she has since lived also in the UK, USA, and Germany. She worked for nearly 20 years in academic biological research. Since leaving her laboratory bench career, she has widened her field of research to politics and humanities.   Her research for her second PhD started with her looking at the demand for ‘safe space' in US and UK universities. It led her to examine important issues such as identity, the self, race, citizenship, the meaning of politics, and identity politics. After reading some of the books and articles published today, she wrote her first book to remind herself and others that there have been and there are other ways of understanding the world around us.   About TIR Thank you, guys, again for taking the time to check this out. Presidents Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden will be holding a critical telemeeting on Tuesday to discuss the crisis in Ukraine and other urgent matters. Also, NATO's Jen Stoltenberg is using over the top anti-Russia rhetoric.Scott Ritter, former UN weapons inspector in Iraq, joins us to discuss Ukraine. Scott argues that the West's claim that Russia is planning on invading Ukraine is absurd and exists only in the minds of the neocon foreign policy blob. Also, President Biden claims that he will make it very difficult for Russia in Ukraine.KJ Noh, activist, writer, and teacher, joins us to discuss Myanmar and China. A Myanmar court has sentenced former leader Aung San Suu Kyi to four years in prison, drawing concerns that the 76 year old is receiving a virtual life sentence. Also, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is warning that the US will retaliate against any Chinese military act against Taiwan with "terrible consequences."Niko House, political activist, independent journalist and podcaster, joins us to discuss Hunter Biden. A new book called "Laptop From Hell" contends that President Joe Biden claimed ten percent of the proceeds from a deal between his son and a Chinese company. This is significant because the President has previously denied receiving any financial consideration from his son's international business ventures.Laith Marouf, broadcaster and journalist based in Beirut, joins us to discuss the Middle East. There are reports that once again civilians may have been killed in the latest US drone strikes in Syria. Also, French President Emmanual Macron announced that he is teaming with Saudi Arabia on a plan to solve the economic and political crisis in Lebanon.Margaret Kimberley, editor and senior columnist at Black Agenda Report and author of "Prejudential: Black America and the Presidents," joins us to discuss Africa. Margaret argues that China is working to close economic deals with Africa rather than colonize the beleaguered resource-rich continent. Also, the Ethiopian forces seem to have turned the tide against the US-backed TPLF forces. Dan Kovalik, writer, author, and lawyer, joins us to discuss Nicaragua. The US hybrid war against Nicaragua has thus far failed miserably as the Central American nation has successfully executed the will of the people in a recent election. The ability to resist incredible pressure from the most powerful imperial force in the world sets an example that the US will be reticent to accept.Caleb Maupin, journalist and political analyst, joins us to discuss Kamala Harris. The Vice President continues to face harsh criticism as a recent Washington Post article shares interviews with former staff members that describe her in less than flattering terms.

Often time the names of Black historical figures are relegated to the same usual suspects: Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcom X, W.E.B Dubois, or Marcus Garvey. This myopic narrative of Black history leaves out figures who often had radical political agendas that challenged institutions traditional figures did not pick up on until later in their lives. One of those neglected figures is Hubert Harrison, who was deemed, "The Father of Harlem Radicalism." On this episode we will ask Jeffry Perry, author of a two volume series on Harrison's life, what distinguished Hubert Harrison from his contemporaries and made him one of the most important Black figures in American history no one knows about.    About Jeffrey B. Great radical thinkers from Kwame Nkrumah to Amilcar Cabral and Even Frantz Fanon warned that a "neo-colonial bourgeoisie" would arise in the formerly colonized world and fulfil a management role in the exploitation of capitalist production throughout the Black and Brown world. This warning has come to fruition. Even in the United States, the Black Political Class acts as protectors of their own venal interests while acting as racial ventriloquists for the Black poor and working class for fatback and biscuits corporate patronage. In these circumstances is it logical to advocate for internal Black Class warfare against the petite bourgeois who act as the intermediaries with international capital and empire. The Spanish Civil War of the late 1930s was, in many ways, a dry run for the barbarities of the Second World War. The conflict pitted the forces of the Spanish Republic and their allies on the radical left against the Nationalists and their fascist backers. One of the most significant figures on the left at the time was Buenaventura Durruti, a veteran revolutionary and leading libertarian socialist. As clashes between the Nationalists and Republicans heated up, Durruti led anarchists against military forces in the Barcelona region and, later, in the defense of Madrid where he was killed in late 1936. We speak to Brenton Lengel, the author of a new graphic novel depicting Durruti's life about who Durruti was, his historical significance, and how we might assess his legacy?   Brenton Lengel Brenton Christopher Lengel (born May 9, 1983) is an American playwright, screenwriter, and journalist noted for his anarchist political views and participation in the Occupy Wall Street protest movement. The Frankfurt School meets Fisher in this critique of capitalism incorporating memes, mental illness and psychedelia into a proposed counterculture. Spring 2020 to 2021 was the year that did not take place. We witnessed a depression, not economically speaking, but in the psychological sense: A clinical depression of and by society itself. This depression was brought about not just by Covid isolation, but by the digital economy, fueled by social media and the meme. In the aftermath, this book revisits the main Frankfurt School theorists, Adorno, Horkheimer, Benjamin and Marcuse, who worked in the shadow of World War Two, during the rise of the culture industry. In examining their thoughts and drawing parallels with Fisher's Capitalist Realism, The Memeing of Mark Fisher aims to render the Frankfurt School as an incisive theoretical toolbox for the post-Covid digital age. Taking in the phenomena of QAnon, twitch streaming, and memes it argues that the dichotomy between culture and political praxis is a false one. Finally, as more people have access to the means for theoretical and cultural broadcasting, it is urged that the online left uses that access to build a real-life cultural and political movement.   Mike Watson Mike Watson is a UK-born art and media theorist, critic and curator who holds a PhD in Philosophy from Goldsmiths College. Watson curated at the 55th and 56th Venice Biennale, as well as at Manifesta12 in Palermo. He has written regularly for Art Review, Artforum, Jacobin, and Radical Philosophy. @_leftaesthetics https://www.mikewatson.fi/   About TIR Thank you, guys, again for taking the time to check this out.
