===== MDJ Script/ Top Stories for December 19th Publish Date: December 19th Commercial: From the BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Friday, December 19th and Happy Birthday to Al Kaline I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal South Cobb mayors speak on accomplishments, future Jaha Howard wins runoff for Georgia Senate District 35 Cobb County staff trade desk work for Christmas carols Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on saturated fats As well as Shane Delancey the Director of the Christmas Tradition at the Strand Theatre All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! Now here is Shane Delancey the Director of the Christmas Tradition at the Strand Theatre BREAK: THE STRAND STORY 1: South Cobb mayors speak on accomplishments, future Three mayors, three cities, and a lot to reflect on. Austell Mayor Ollie Clemons, Mableton Mayor Michael Owens, and Powder Springs Mayor Al Thurman gathered at the Riverside EpiCenter to talk about 2025 wins and what’s next for 2026 during the State of South Cobb event. Clemons? He’s proud of Austell’s bold move to raise the millage rate for the first time in decades. “It’s about reinvesting in our community,” he said, pointing to plans for downtown revitalization and hiring a city manager—finally. Owens celebrated Mableton’s new departments and leadership team, calling 2025 a year of “building the foundation.” Next year? It’s all about community engagement and growth. Thurman highlighted Powder Springs’ shiny new city hall and parking garage, plus job-creating developments. His focus for 2026? Sustainable growth and leaving a legacy of leadership. STORY 2: Jaha Howard wins runoff for Georgia Senate District 35 Jaha Howard pulled off a narrow win Tuesday night, defeating fellow Democrat Roger Bruce in the runoff for state Senate District 35. Unofficial results show Howard, a dentist and former Cobb school board member, edging out Bruce with 51.9% of the vote to Bruce’s 48.1%. The seat, which covers parts of Cobb and Fulton counties, was left open when Jason Esteves stepped down to run for governor. Howard credited his win to personal outreach—hundreds of phone calls, he said, to build trust. “People want to feel heard,” he said. Bruce’s campaign struggled with name recognition, especially in Cobb. STORY 3: Cobb County staff trade desk work for Christmas carols Glover Park got a dose of holiday magic Tuesday, thanks to Cobb County’s newest choir, “Cobb County Sonic Sound” (or, as they like to call themselves, “CoCo SoSo”). Led by Dr. Jatunn Gibson, head of the county’s Public Services Agency, the group—decked out in festive sweaters and holiday flair—belted out classics like “Joy to the World” and “White Christmas.” Oh, and they’ve got their own band too, all county employees. Between songs, they performed skits about elves saving Christmas. “It’s all about fun and camaraderie,” said Grace Williams, a choir member. “We’re connecting beyond work—and it’s a blast.” We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We’ll be right back. Break: Villa Rica Wonderland Train STORY 4: Jason Gaines named Mableton Citizen of the Year Jason Gaines didn’t see it coming. This week, he was named the 2025 Mableton Citizen of the Year at the South Cobb Area Council meeting, and the surprise left him, well, a little speechless. “It just warms my heart,” Gaines said. “To know the work I’ve done is appreciated like this—it’s humbling.” Gaines, who’s the director of planning at Croy Engineering and chairs the Mableton Development Authority Board, was honored by Mayor Michael Owens. “Jason’s been a force,” Owens said. “His expertise and passion have shaped this community at such a critical time.” The guy’s résumé? Stacked. Leadership programs, board memberships—he’s everywhere. STORY 5: Anderson steps down as Walker football coach TJ Anderson pulled off something close to miraculous in 2025. With just 23 players—yes, 23—he guided Walker through a grueling 10-game season. The Wolverines finished 2-8, but they still earned a spot in the Class A-AAA Private state playoffs. Unfortunately, injuries piled up, and the team had to decline the bid. “We had to make the best decision for our kids,” Anderson said, reflecting on the tough call. But that season? It was his last. Anderson announced on X that he’s stepping down as Walker’s head coach after three years. “It’s been a journey,” he wrote, thanking the community and his family. BRAVES: Ha-Seong Kim is staying put in Atlanta—at least for another year. The 30-year-old shortstop signed a one-year, $20 million deal with the Braves on Monday, locking him in as the team’s starter for 2026. Not bad, considering he turned down a $16 million option just last month and walked away with an extra $4 million. Kim joined the Braves late last season, claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay on Sept. 1. He made an immediate impact, hitting .309 with a .372 OBP, three homers, and 12 RBIs in his first 19 games. Sure, he cooled off at the end—1-for-19 in the last five games—but the Braves clearly see his potential. Kim’s journey hasn’t been without bumps. Injuries sidelined him for much of 2025 with the Rays, where he hit just .214 in 24 games. But let’s not forget—this guy won a Gold Glove with the Padres in 2023 and has 84 career stolen bases. The Braves are betting on a bounce-back. And if Kim can channel his San Diego form, he could be a 3-4 WAR player. High hopes, but hey, the talent’s there. I'm Keith Ippolito and that’s your MDJ Sports Minute. And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on saturated fats We’ll have closing comments after this. In this conversation, Laura welcomes Dr. La-Toya Gaines, Founder & CEO of Family Matters Counseling and Psychological Services, to explore what it truly means to practice whole self-care—beyond the trends, beyond the myths, and beyond the surface. La-Toya expands the definition of self-care beyond activities and indulgence to include rest, boundaries, community support, emotional tending, identity work, and the practices that allow us to be fully human. Additionally, Laura and La-Toya examine the deep connection between the Strong Black Woman archetype and self-neglect. They unpack how this trope shapes our labor, our silence, and our expectations of ourselves; and how whole self-care disrupts it. Together, they examine the emotional, psychological, physical, and communal layers of care that Black women need and deserve. For those who feel they've been neglecting themselves, La-Toya offers compassionate first steps to reconnect, rebuild, and recommit to their wellbeing. This heartfelt conversation offers both grounding insight and practical guidance for anyone ready to reconnect with themselves, disrupt harmful tropes, and reclaim self-care as a path to healing and liberation. About Dr. La-Toya Dr. La-Toya S. Gaines is a licensed psychologist, speaker, and best-selling author dedicated to empowering Black women to prioritize their mental health and well-being. She authored the Amazon best-selling "Nourishing the Strong Black Woman" Self-Care Journal and is working to expand its reach through licensing. This week, we're bringing you something a bit different. Our reporter Madison Pauly recently teamed up with journalist and podcaster Pablo Torre for a special episode of his investigative show, Pablo Torre Finds Out. The episode is a deep dive into right-wing superstar Riley Gaines, a swimmer who tied a transgender woman for fifth place and became a viral figure with outsized influence within the MAGA movement. Pauly spent six months digging into the money behind Gaines' anti-trans empire and interviewing Gaines' former teammates and competitors. She uncovers how the swimmer is profiting from her newfound fame as a generational conservative activist and explores how a lawsuit Gaines filed against the NCAA, which will be decided by the Supreme Court next year, could change everything for trans athletes.Pablo Torre Finds Out is produced by Meadowlark Media and distributed by The Athletic. They've called each other a communist and a fascist but last week President Trump and Zohran Mandani appeared to put on a united front when the new New York Mayor visited the Oval Office. Their supporters may shudder to think about it, but the pair are really not so different. Both defied the establishment and defied the odds with a populist election campaign, turbocharged by social media, which promised to swing a wrecking ball into the failing status quo. Trump and Mamdani do, of course, propose very different treatments for the problems they have diagnosed - but the big picture point remains the same. Experts, pundits and pollsters will always argue that both sides need to move to the centre - but voters are sick of it. Joining Piers Morgan to discuss is host of Gaines for Girls on Outkick! The KEF boys crawl out of the bye week basement — coffee, Celsius, and bar-vibes in hand — and immediately unload everything that's been boiling since the UCLA meltdown. Nebraska blew another multi-possession lead, and the crew goes full therapy session over whether Matt Rhule is literally manifesting close games into existence. Three-touchdown leads, one-score stress, and the close-game curse all get brought to trial. From there, it's Big Ten identity talk — cold weather, grit, conference toughness — and why Michigan, Northwestern, USC, and Iowa all play a part in the chaos of the national picture. Then the episode goes peak KEF as the boys hype up Ferrari doing the splits and throwing the bones, break down Mr. Gaines eating eight steaks a day and wrestling heavyweight, and preview a stacked week of dual tournaments with Oklahoma State and Iowa. And last, but at least we dig into Nebraska versus Penn State week.

This podcast is powered by Klean Freaks University.com — where real cleaners build real empires. From mop buckets to million-dollar systems, we teach you how to clean smarter, lead stronger, and scale faster.Want to hear what it's like to clean a 200-year-old house where history lingers—and sometimes taps you on the shoulder? We sit down with Amber Starr to explore Gaines Tavern in Walton, Kentucky, a city-owned landmark built in 1813 that demands gentle hands, careful products, and a steady nerve. Amber walks us through the reality of maintaining original floors, why harsh chemicals are a no-go, and how seasonal shutdowns shape a deep-clean rhythm that respects the building's age and character. The stories come alive fast: faint footsteps in empty rooms, a flicker at the edge of sight, and a moment when a child's hand was met by another, unseen and small. We trace the house's layered past, from the upstairs ballroom stabbing to the orchard tragedy of Lizzie Rice, and connect those memories to the practical choices cleaners must make to protect fragile surfaces. Amber shares why she only cleans in daylight, how lamp-lit rooms complicate evening work, and what it means to be both cleaner and caretaker in a place that holds its own narrative. Along the way, we touch on regional lore—Gaines Crossing's stagecoach days and nearby Waverly Hills—and consider how stories become part of stewardship. There's a business blueprint here too. Clay shares a personal anecdote about voting locally and previews an interview with Riley Gaines, who recently faced backlash from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez over her stance on protecting women’s sports. The conversation quickly pivots to the New York City mayoral race, spotlighting controversial candidate Zohran Mamdani. Clay and Buck dissect Mamdani’s shifting narratives, including his disputed claims about Islamophobia post-9/11 and radical past statements such as “Defund the NYPD” and linking police to the IDF. They analyze why voters seem unfazed by these revelations and criticize Andrew Cuomo’s lackluster campaign strategy. The hosts warn that Mamdani’s progressive platform—featuring ideas like government-run grocery stores and fare-free buses—reflects a dangerous trend toward socialist policies that could devastate city infrastructure and small businesses. The "White Men Are Evil" Argument Clay and Buck discuss Zohran Mamdani, the leading candidate for New York City mayor, and dissect his radical platform and controversial family background. They highlight statements made by Mamdani’s father, a Columbia University professor, who accused the United States of inspiring Nazi genocide through its treatment of Native Americans. Clay and Buck push back hard, offering a detailed historical rebuttal that includes references to colonial history, tribal warfare, and global conquest, arguing that the left’s narrative is rooted in anti-American sentiment and historical ignorance. The conversation expands to critique the broader Democratic leadership, including figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, and Gavin Newsom, warning that the “New York City liberal” and “California liberal” brands are becoming toxic in middle America. They praise more moderate Democratic mayors like Daniel Lurie in San Francisco and Muriel Bowser in Washington, D.C., for showing signs of pragmatism, especially in working with President Trump on crime reduction and urban policy. Trump '28 Unity Ticket? record-breaking highs in the S&P 500, Dow Jones, and NASDAQ, crediting President Trump’s economic policies for the surge. He contrasts this with media narratives from earlier in the year that predicted economic collapse, emphasizing the disconnect between Wall Street performance and lingering ground-level effects from the Biden-era economy. The hosts then pivot to Trump’s Asia tour, highlighting his meetings with leaders in Japan, South Korea, and potentially North Korea’s Kim Jong-un. Trump’s comments aboard Air Force One spark speculation about a JD Vance–Marco Rubio unity ticket for 2028, with Clay and Buck debating the plausibility of Trump stepping aside while endorsing his successors. A major segment features Trump’s challenge to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and Rep. Jasmine Crockett, mocking their intelligence and inviting them to take cognitive tests. Crockett fires back, accusing Trump of elitism and racial obsession, prompting Clay and Buck to critique the intellectual caliber of current congressional representatives across party lines. Riley Gaines vs. AOC Riley Gaines discusses her recent clash with AOC over women’s sports. Gaines shares her experience as a new mom, pushing back against cultural narratives that discourage young women from motherhood. She also responds to AOC’s dismissive comments about her athletic achievements, defending her fifth-place NCAA ranking and criticizing the left’s hypocrisy on women’s sports and fairness. Today, Tracy talks with Betsy Gaines-Quammen, author of two books about the West -- American Zion: Cliven Bundy, God, and Public Lands -- and True West: Myth and Meaning on the Far Side of America -- about something on many people's minds today: radicalism and how it's changing the American experience. Their focus is Idaho, Colorado and Montana and they get into everything from Mormonism, the takeover of the outdoors by the rich, and wolf reintroduction, one of Tracy's favorite topics. But don't worry if this sounds like heavy stuff. Their conversation ends on an up-note. https://coloradosun.com/colorados-best email: sunevents@coloradosun.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
