It's not that you try to forget them; you try to ignore them. But there's that pain of knowing that you've lost things you wanted—things you maybe worked for—and because of your addiction, you had to give them away, or they were taken away.” “It's important that we all recognize our natural rhythms and accommodate them to the best of our ability.” “The positive choices rewire the brain. And when you make good positive choices in your recovery, it's a new normal.” “Challenge your own thoughts if you find yourself caught in negative loops.” “Success in life is more about having meaningful work, challenging but not too much, and a balanced life.” “You have to decide what you're going to do about the pain you've experienced and hopefully find a way to heal and give back to others.” “When you get to work on time, today and tomorrow and the next day, you do that for a month, that it's usually a habit. It's not a struggle anymore. That's your new normal.” BOOKS MENTIONED: The Body Keeps the Score: Mind, Brain and Body in the Transformation of Trauma by Bessel van der Kolk (https://a.co/d/hNTWHiq) Girl Walks Out of a Bar by Lisa F. Tim and Samantha discuss the 1994 romantic drama When A Man Loves a Woman, currently streaming on Prime. Why? Because 2-scene-Phil is just the cutest thing you've ever seen. Is this movie kinda great? How are Meg Ryan's dramatic chops? What are the best parts of Phil's performance? What's the deal with addiction and sobriety? All that and maybe a little bit more in this fifteenth episode of "That's That: A Philip Seymour Hoffman Retrospective Podcast." This episode's guest is crowd favorite and new dog owner Samantha Sweeting Davis. Samantha has lots of recommendations for those interested in stories, questions, and answers around sobriety. Here are a handful starting with some books (all also available to get through your local library): Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol by Holly Whitaker A Piece of Cake: A Memoir by Cupcake Brown Blackout: Remembering the Things I Drank to Forget by Sarah Hepola Girl Walks Out of a Bar: A Memoir by Lisa F. Smith Here's another starting place: https://www.jointempest.com/resources/ Here are some great Instagram hashtags to follow: #SoberCurious, #SoberLife, #SoberAF, #SoberSaturday, and #SoberIsSexy Feel free to DM Samantha if you need someone to talk to about this stuff! Here is her Instagram. "That's That" is sponsored by One County Film Company, produced and hosted by Timothy Mark Davis, edited by Ryan Arnst, with show music composed by Jessica Rae Huber, and artwork by Drew Hanagen. Additional music from Kevin Graham and Tillman Silescu. Our next episode is on the 2007 political drama Charlie Wilson's War, currently streaming on Amazon Prime. We are kicking off 2020 with a guest I have wanted to interview forever: Holly Whitaker, founder of Tempest Sobriety School and author of the fabulous new book Quit Like a Woman. If you’ve ever questioned your relationship with drinking or you're thinking about making a change for 2020, this episode is a MUST LISTEN. Today's topic is particularly personal. This is the first in a three-episode series about feminism and sobriety that I wanted to do, in part, to create some space to talk about my own recovery and to come out as a sober person and what that means as a feminist. (Have questions? Let’s talk!) Holly dropped so many mind bombs in this interview, it was almost impossible to edit. We talked about her story, why she tried and then left AA, and the origins of Tempest. We also dug into why our recovery culture needs a feminist overhaul and what it really means to “quit like a woman.” (Music by Ava Luna, Loyalty Freak Music, Katrina Stone, Rew, Space Doves, Borrtex, and Josh Leake.) It's one thing to be open about your addiction when you're a writer in LA—aka a person most people assume WOULD be an addict. It's quite another when you're a high-powered attorney. But Lisa F. Smith is a trail blazer. The author of the hit book Girl Walks Out of a Bar is also probably my favorite person I've never met. (Side note: I've slept in her bed despite not having met her; it's not as sexy as it sounds but that's something we get into in the interview.) What's fascinating about Lisa's story is that she was so high functioning that the day she got sober was just like any other day where she was headed to work—although instead of going to work, she went to detox. In this episode, we discuss her fear around coming out, the way addiction can start with food and how she feels when men in AA are called sexual harassers, among many other topics. (BTW, Lisa is featured in my Guide to Becoming a Light Hustler, where I profiled the people I know who have taken their darkest experiences to share their light and in some cases built careers off of it. If you want to be one of them, be sure to get the free guide here: www.annadavidcoaching.com.) NOTE: This episode is from a Facebook Live interview that we did, which means that the audio isn't as sharp as it is on regular episodes. Please bear with that! And please tune into my regular Facebook Live interviews, which take place at 4 pm PST on Tuesdays (unless I have a conflict, in which case I reschedule but announce the change on my page. Make sure you Like my page so stay up on the info!)
