We're here. The last episode of our FIRST NOIRvember! (Oh, yeah, and it's like our 300th episode, too, or whatever...) We close out with some neo noir slick from the 1980s: DOA with Dennis Quaid, Meg Ryan, Daniel Stern, and Charlotte Rampling. From IMDB: A college professor's day: his top student allegedly commits suicide, his wife presents him with divorce papers and he overnights in a freshman girl's dorm. The next day: more murders around him. Will he find the killer in time? ENJOY! YES. SAG-AFTRA HAVE FINALLY JOINED THE WGA, AND HAS COME TO AN AGREEMENT WITH THE AMPTP. IT'S BEEN A VERY LONG AND UPHILL BATTLE FOR NOT JUST THE MEMBERS AND THEIR FAMILIES OF BOTH UNIONS, IT HAS ALSO CAUSED A GREAT DEAL OF HARDSHIP FOR THE REST OF THE INDUSTRY'S PROFESSIONALS AND THEIR FAMILIES. BUT ALL ISN'T BACK TO NORMAL AND WON'T BE FOR SOME TIME. THESE WORKERS AND THEIR FAMILIES ARE GOING TO BE STRUGGLING WHILE THE INDUSTRY STARTS REMEMBERING HOW TO WORK. THE OVERWHELMING BURDEN OF PUTTING FOOD ON THE TABLE AND A ROOF OVER ONE'S HEAD DOESN'T END WHEN THE DEALS ARE MADE OR EVEN RATIFIED. THE INDUSTRY'S USUAL HIATUS/SHUTDOWN IN DECEMBER IS MOST LIKELY GOING TO EXTEND ANY KIND OF BREAK FROM "NORMALCY" IN THE FREQUENCY OF WORK. IT COULD EVEN BE MONTHS INTO 2024 BEFORE PRODUCTIONS GET UP TO SPEED AGAIN. BUT EVEN IF THEY WORK THROUGH THAT USUAL "HOLIDAY HIATUS", FOR MANY FAMILIES THEY ARE GOING TO CONTINUE TO NEED ASSISTANCE, EVEN IF THEY RETURN TO WORK. THIS IS WHERE YOU CAN HELP. GDP Script/ Top Stories for Nov 19th  Publish Date:  Nov 17th    HENSSLER 15 From the Henssler Financial Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Sunday, November 19th and Happy Birthday to Meg Ryan. ***HARRY MET SALLY – DINER SCENE*** I'm Bruce Jenkins and here are your top stories presented by Peggy Slappy Properties. Deputies Arrest Third Suspect In Murder Of Football Star Killed Outside Sugarloaf Mills Suwanee's Shaun King, Lilburn's Diane Owens Recognized for Service to Mercer University's Board of Trustees Sol Systems and Gas South Team Up to Donate $300K in support of STEM Education at Gwinnett schools All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: Peggy Slappy   STORY 1: Deputies Arrest Third Suspect In Murder Of Football Star Killed Outside Sugarloaf Mills Gwinnett County sheriff's deputies arrested Kpadeh Jones, a Lawrenceville resident, as the third suspect in the shooting of Elijah DeWitt, a Jefferson High School football standout, killed in a shooting outside Sugarloaf Mills in Lawrenceville last year. Jones, along with Kemare Bryan and Chandler Richardson, faces charges related to DeWitt's murder, including felony and malice murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of certain felonies. DeWitt's family filed a lawsuit against the mall's owners, security officials, Dave and Buster's, and five individuals, alleging insufficient measures to address known crime-related issues at the mall before DeWitt's death. The lawsuit is pending in Gwinnett County State Court.     STORY 2: Suwanee's Shaun King, Lilburn's Diane Owens Recognized for Service to Mercer University's Board of Trustees Suwanee's Shaun King and Lilburn's M. Diane Owens were recognized for completing five-year terms on Mercer University's Board of Trustees. King, senior pastor of Johns Creek Baptist Church, earned his Doctor of Divinity degree in 2018 from the School of Theology. Owens, a retired attorney and former board chair, is a 1977 graduate of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and a 1980 graduate of the Law School. The board also acknowledged other trustees who completed their terms. Nine new trustees were elected, including Nancy Grace and Erin Keller. Thomas P. Bishop was elected as the board chair for 2024. STORY 3: Sol Systems and Gas South Team Up to Donate $300K in support of STEM Education at Gwinnett schools Gas South and Sol Systems have collaborated to contribute nearly $300,000 to Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) for STEM education. The funding aims to develop renewable energy learning tools, train teachers, engage students, and support schools in working toward STEM certification. GCPS focuses on preparing students for a future workforce by integrating renewable energy Academic Knowledge and Skills into STEM disciplines. The initiative promotes interdisciplinary learning, critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills necessary for STEM and renewable energy careers. KidWind, a clean energy education leader, will collaborate with GCPS to enhance hands-on learning opportunities for students, including internships and industry partnerships.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back   Break 2: MOG  – TOM WAGES – DTL –    STORY 4: Kim Jong Un's daughter marks a year as country's propaganda star In a departure from tradition, North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un's daughter, dubbed the "respected daughter," made her public debut at the test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) last year, breaking the tradition of keeping leader's children out of the public eye. The daughter, thought to be named Ju Ae, has been used in state propaganda to humanize Kim as a father and convey a message of a new generation ready to lead the family dynasty, reliant on nuclear weapons. The move aims to bolster support for the country's weapons program, emphasizing its role in protecting children from perceived external threats. The daughter has appeared in public 16 times in the past year, often associated with military events. Speculation remains about her potential succession, but given her young age, it is too early to tell. The state propaganda is expected to keep her in a prominent role.   STORY 5: Congressional dysfunction puts the nation's fiscal reputation at risk Moody's has downgraded its outlook on the United States from "stable" to "negative," citing "continued political polarization" and the nation's inability to address fiscal challenges. The recent fiscal dysfunction, including the threat of a government shutdown, has consequences for millions and tarnishes the country's reputation for economic responsibility. Moody's first gave the U.S. its highest credit rating in 1917, but the agency lowered its outlook, emphasizing political polarization. The article calls for voters to rebuke those prioritizing partisan politics over national interests, highlighting the need for Congress to transcend partisan agendas to address the nation's challenges.   We'll be back in a moment   Break 3:  Glow Light Show  - ESOG - INGLES 1   STORY 6: Sugar Hill City Council Race Headed to a Runoff In a Sugar Hill City Council race, initially showing Meg Avery defeating Councilwoman Jenn Thatcher by five votes, the certified results, including provisional ballots, now indicate a tie with both candidates receiving 729 votes. The city announced a runoff election for Post #3 on December 5th. The election initially seemed unfavorable for incumbents, as challengers, including Avery, appeared to secure victories. Now, Avery and Thatcher will compete in a runoff, and early voting is scheduled from November 27 to December 1, with election day voting on December 5 at Sugar Hill City Hall. STORY 7: Steve Gasper Announces Campaign For Gwinnett School Board District 3 Seat Steve Gasper, a frequent critic of the Gwinnett County Board of Education, has announced his candidacy for the District 3 seat in the May 2024 nonpartisan school board elections. Gasper, a former vice chairman of the Gwinnett Republican Party, has been vocal at school board meetings, criticizing the district's leadership under a Democrat majority. His campaign focuses on empowering educators, ensuring school safety, promoting transparency, fostering community engagement, and delivering high-quality education. Gasper, a former educator and Boy Scout volunteer, aims to bring a fresh and forward-thinking approach to education in Gwinnett County. We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: GCPS - Henssler 60    Signoff –  Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. Artist and photographer Theresa Drift of Cook, Minn., and theatermaker Payton Counts of Net Lake, Minn., both saw the “Native American Art: Past and Present” gallery show at the Northwoods Friends of the Arts in Cook. It's a mixture of contemporary and historical pieces by local artists, including paintings, metalwork, birchbark baskets, beadwork and quilting. The show also includes a few pieces from Grand Portage artist George Morrison, a well-known mid-century painter. Counts appreciated the range of the show, which is presented in one room. “I thought it was nice to see a mixture of contemporary as well as older pieces of work, kind of this like partnership of art connecting to the community." “It definitely shows the changing culture and [that] it's not a static thing,” agrees Drift. “It's constantly evolving and growing.” The exhibit runs through Sat., Nov. 25. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. Art teacher and illustrator Heather Zemien of Brooklyn Park, Minn., has been following Off Leash Theater Productions for the past year, ever since she saw their original “Off-Kilter Cabaret.” She's looking forward to seeing the second annual production this weekend. The cabaret features seven artists living and making art with a range of mental and physical abilities. The performance includes dance, comedy, puppetry, musical composition, spoken word and storytelling. The show is emceed by storyteller Amy Salloway, whose work Zemien has followed since seeing her on stage last year. The show strikes a special chord for Zemien, whose late partner was in a wheelchair. She says she's excited to see and support this all-inclusive show.  “Off Kilter Cabaret” will be performed at the Cowles Center for the Performing Arts in Minneapolis Fri., Nov 17 and Sat. Nov 18 at 7:30 p.m. and Sun., Nov 19 at 2 p.m.  The building is fully accessible. All three shows have American Sign Language and audio descriptions available. Masks are required. Please note: the accompanying music in the radio piece is “Interlude 4” from A.J. Isaacson-Zvidzwa's composition “Angels Sang to Me.” Isaacson-Zvidzwa is one of the seven artists featured in this weekend's “Off Kilter Cabaret.” Philip Muehe, managing director of the Rochester Repertory Theatre, suggests a romantic comedy musical in Lanesboro, Minn., for your entertainment this holiday season. The Commonweal Theatre Company in Lanesboro is staging the musical “She Loves Me” through Dec. 23. The show features cheerful, catchy numbers about two shopkeepers who get on each others' last nerve. Secretly, though, they've become pen pals through a lonely hearts group. When they finally find out that the person with whom they've fallen in love over letters is, in reality, the person right across the shop, heartwarming hilarity ensues.  If that plot sounds familiar, the Commonweal put on an adaptation of the play “Parfumerie” on which the musical “She Loves Me” is based back in 2011. The story was the inspiration for several movies, including the 1998 romcom “You've Got Mail” with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

A special episode of Films that I Own That I Haven't Watched Yet, recorded shortly after Christmas last year (so only took me the best part of a year to edit and upload!) Four films, all linking from one to the next - so not chosen at random. The first Mr Smith Goes To Washington (1939) - from director Frank Capra and starring James Stewart (who would later work together on Its A Wonderful Life), Jean Arthur and Claude Rains - a political comedy drama in which Stewart plays a newly appointed Senator who is battling a corrupt political system. Then, I watch and review the festive romantic comedy The Shop Around The Corner (1940) - another James Stewart movie, a romantic comedy directed by Ernst Lubitsch in which Stewart plays alongside Margaret Sullivan as two employees working in a leathergoods shop, who dispite loathing each otrher in person are actually falling in love via anonymous letters.Film 3 is You've Got Mail. (1998) which sees Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks star in a Nora Ephron retelling of the Shop Around the Corner, for the digital age, as Meg Ryan plays a small book shop owner who is put out of business by the book store chain owner, Hanks, but again, via anonymous emails they strike up a loving relationshipFinally, film 4 is Nora Ephron's whimsical remake of the classic TV Series Bewtitched, in which Will Farrell plays a fading TV star trying to boost his career by relaunching a classic TV show (Bewtitched) by casting unknown actress (and actual witch) played by Nicole Kidman. The holy trinity of Meg Ryan romantic comedies (“When Harry Met Sally,” “You've Got Mail,” and “Sleepless in Seattle”) are huge inspirations behind our podcast and worldviews. But is the real-life starlet as big of a hopeless romantic as her films make us feel? We're headed to the 1990s to look back on her marriage to Dennis Quaid. This is a story of a city girl who unexpectedly fell in love with a “wild guy from Texas.” On the surface, they seemed stronger than ever after overcoming Dennis' struggles with addiction together. This only made their divorce and allegations of adultery more shocking.  Why did Meg come to appreciate the backlash over her relationship with Russell Crowe? What is her relationship with Dennis like today? And, as you'll hear Oprah ask, how long *do* you stay after you know it's really over?  *****  Significant Lovers is a true-love podcast about historic and celebrity couples. Is there anything better than books? Today I'm not talking about the compulsory part of books at school (that's a later episode in this series), I'm talking about reading for the love it. Reading because as Meg Ryan's character said in You've Got Mail, “When you read a book as a child, it becomes part of your identity in a way that no other reading in your whole life does.” Most historical girls were illiterate, unfortunately, but even for those who could read, the growth of literature intended for them was slow. Early books tended to be (1) educational or (2) religious or (3) manuals on good manners ("laugh thou not too loud nor yawn thou not too wide"). In the 18th century, publisher John Newbery (later to have a children's book award named after him) began specializing in books for children, and he tried to make them fun. It was a revolutionary idea that would only gain speed in the early 19th century. Visit the website (herhalfofhistory.com) for sources, transcripts, and pictures. You may think Nicolas Cage is an unlikely choice to portray a lovelorn angel ... and you'd be right. Yes, 1998's City of Angels asked audiences to suspend a variety of beliefs: Meg Ryan as a seen-it-all surgeon. Dennis Franz as a fallen deity. And, oh yeah, beach-loving angels with cloudy job descriptions. Audiences bought it all. But now, over two cynical decades later, does this fantasy flick raise or sink our spirits? The Old Roommates adjust their middle-aged lenses, polish their halos, and rewatch this 90's romance. Listen to this.Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of November 3, 2023. Are you ready for another Elvis biopic? Well, "Priscilla is the latest one, and it's about the relationship between Elvis and Priscilla Presley as told through Sofia Coppola's direction. "The Marsh King's Daughter" is a tense, engaging story featuring Daisy Ridley and a dark menace in her character’s past. "What Happens Later" sees Meg Ryan return to the big screen for the first time in eight years in a rom-com with David Duchovny about two ex-lovers stuck in an airport together. "The Persian Version" is not for everyone, but it is a funny and poignant movie about an Iranian-American girl and her struggles with her two heritages.  But the best thing Andy watched was probably "Radical," starring Eugenio Derbez, a true story about a teacher who got some of the worst-performing students in Mexico to love learning.   Over on streaming services…Netflix’s "All the Light We Cannot See" is a streaming series based on the best-selling book about a blind girl who made illegal radio broadcasts in a German-occupied coastal French town near the end of World War II. "Sly," also on Netflix, is a streaming documentary that reminds us how amazing screenwriter Sylvester Stallone is and makes me wish I could watch movies with the guy. And Hulu has "Quiz Lady," an occasionally funny streaming movie about sisters (Awkwafina and Sandra Oh) who want to get on a Jeopardy-like show to earn money for their mom's gambling debts.   Beyond Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Gaming, and Tech, the brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing the nerdy. Brilliant opinions and commentary on all things geek, but surprising knowledge and witty arguments over pop culture, Star Trek, MARVEL vs. DC, and a wide range of movies, TV shows, and more. Formerly known as SLC Fanboys, the show is hosted by KSL Movie Show’s  Andy Farnsworth and KellieAnn Halvorsen, who are joined by guest experts.
