In a concession to the whims of the hellsite that is Blog Talk Radio, Jay and Dre have decided to run shows for an hour at a time instead of two hours, since the previous two shows cut off an hour into the proceedings. Therefore, tune in Thursday night while the Broncos-Chargers game is in progress to hear the boys give their best and worst of Week 15 in the NFL. Use your amulets and other special charms to ward off the podcast demons, and hopefully they (we) will be allowed to stay on the air for the duration of the progrum. Today's episode is special because I'm doing things a bit differently and bringing on a friend who played a huge role in my journey to break free from anxiety, panic disorder, depression, and medication. Kelsi and I met when our lives looked very different. We were working at a bar and partying into the early hours nearly every night. Then, on June 6, 2013, Kelsi got sober after a life-changing experience in rehab—a turning point that deeply impacted me. About a year later, I hit my own rock bottom, and watching Kelsi transform her life helped me see that there was a way out of the cycle I was stuck in. In this episode, I'm taking you back to that messy 2011-2014 chapter of my life, when my anxiety, depression, and panic were at their peak, and I was using substances to cope. We talk about the “butterfly effect,” how one person's journey can set off ripples in another's, and how Kelsi's path toward sobriety inspired my own journey toward mental health and recovery. Today, Kelsi is a wife, a stepmom, and a business owner who helps women grow their brands online. She openly shares her story about mental health and recovery, and her DMs are always open to anyone re-evaluating their relationship with alcohol. Connect with Kelsi on Instagram @kelsibyers I'm excited for you to tune in, and as always, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the episode. Money is a terrible master. It will drive you into the ground if it's running your life. But it's also an amazing servant if you tell it where to go and you understand funds. If you are just dipping your toes into the world of money and you feel intimidated or it feels like it's this hard, weird, complicated thing, I want you to understand first and foremost, that is by design. But honestly, managing your money well isn't really that complicated. I consider it my job to put more money in the hands of more women, I like to deconstruct the scary and make it super simple. In today's episode, I want to share with you the top five books I really think can make a massive difference in your financial journey, and also in helping you create a new relationship to money. Book 1: The Psychology of Money The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel talks about very specific stocks that you can purchase or decide to invest in through Vanguard. (I am not an affiliate of Vanguard, but everybody that works with me knows I am a huge fan and I am actually invested in my own funds inside of Vanguard). He really breaks down exactly where their money is, how they've decided to divide it up inside of retirement and before they retired. And it's that simple breakdown that makes this book so valuable. The other thing I think you're really going to love about this book is the first opening chapter. It talks about how nobody on this earth decides one day to wake up and mess themselves up financially. So if you've been beating yourself up for where you are financially or judging others, think of family members, spouses, your children, anybody and the way that they're using money, it's probably either a fear they haven't dealt with or something they just don't know. Book 2: Quit Like a Millionaire There are two authors for Quit Like a Millionaire, and they are actually romantic partners, and it's so great to watch their journey. It's Kristy Shen and Bryce Leung now, their journey together, you guys, they started their investment journey right before one of the biggest stock market crashes we've all ever experienced. And I so appreciate her honesty about this journey. These two beautiful humans are part of the fire generation. If you don't know what that means, it stands for Financially Independent Retire Early the fire generation. So what they do is they share how they were able to retire well, in their 30s. And this is not like some crazy scheme. What I appreciate about this book is the practical approach. These are two regular human beings who have figured out exactly how to invest in the market in a healthy, consistent, sustainable way and the sustainable piece, I think, is the most important. This is one book I recommend you get an actual hard copy of in your world, because she goes into great detail about IRS rules and how you can pull out your money without creating taxable events. All legally. Listen in for the rest of my money book recommendations. Let's get to it! Heather grew up in a party house, so it seemed completely natural to her when she started drinking and became a party girl herself. There were short moments when she questioned her drinking throughout her teens and twenties, but they never lasted long. Life started to become intense as Heather entered her late twenties and got married. A five year journey to become a mother, followed by intense postpartum depression and skin cancer that took 75% of her ear had her leaning on wine as a means of support. At 38, Heather found herself unexpectedly pregnant with her second child during a very intense moment in her professional life. This all culminated into a period of chronic stress and a diagnosis of Crohn's. She was still drinking, but it was becoming clear that something needed to change. Throughout the following years, Heather began to make those changes - she left her job and got certified in a new career path. Whispers of an ‘alcoholic' father felt constant in Elizabeth's home as a child, leading her to associate alcohol with secrecy and shame. With this stigma in mind, she successfully kept alcohol at the fringes of her life for many years. It wasn't until she moved after college that alcohol started to find its way in - as a crutch to lean on to make new friends in a new place. As the years passed and alcohol slipped more deeply into Elizabeth's day-to-day life, the word ‘alcoholic' lurked continually in the back of her mind, but she didn't know if the term truly applied to her. Then, a joke her children made, calling her an alcoholic, made her stop in her tracks. Was she? This led Elizabeth to try her hand at moderation, but like so many of us it did not work at all. Thinking she needed something more, Elizabeth took a break from drinking. In that break she experienced something majorly eye opening - the pure joy she could feel during a night of sober partying. She didn't need alcohol to have fun! It was then that the puzzle pieces started to come together. Finally, This Naked Mind and Quit Like a Woman clued her into the ways in which alcohol was harming her, and during her preparation for a vacation where alcohol would be center stage she realized… she didn't want to drink anymore. In that moment she became spontaneously sober! Elizabeth is now four months sober and she wants you to know: Yes, sometimes it is hard, but you will never regret a night when you don't drink. Join us in the The Sober Mom Life Cafe! Monica Olano, founder of Cali Sober Mom, a trusted source to learn about and discover safe and effective cannabis products, host of the Cali Sober Mom Podcast, cannabis brand ambassador and reform advocate, is the Cali Sober Mom. Monica's journey into cannabis began on June 18, 2022 when she faced severe complications during the birth of her twins. The distressing experience led to postpartum depression and anxiety, which she initially coped with through alcohol, severely affecting her ability to care for her three young children. Her condition worsened despite psychiatric help, but determined to change, she embarked on a sobriety journey on April 3, 2023, exploring medical marijuana as an alternative coping mechanism. Her sobriety journey was significantly influenced by books like "This Naked Mind" by Annie Grace and "Quit Like a Woman," by Holly Whitaker, which exposed the manipulative tactics of the alcohol industry. Embracing a sober lifestyle, Monica found relief in cannabis edibles and beverages, which helped her become more present and calm. This inspired her to create a podcast to share her journey and educate others about the benefits of cannabis over alcohol, leveraging her background in digital marketing and sales to connect with industry professionals and envision her own cannabis-related ventures. Monica's advocacy extends to social justice issues, particularly the socio-economic impacts of cannabis legalization and the disproportionate incarceration of nonwhite individuals for minor drug offenses. Balancing her roles as a mother, entrepreneur, and advocate, she remains committed to promoting healthier alternatives and broader societal change, driven by a desire to challenge harmful industries and improve health and justice outcomes.

Kelly's drinking habit developed when she was in the Navy, and it took a rough turn when she transitioned to being a stay at home mom. With no community to help her through those early mom years, Kelly increasingly leaned on alcohol as a means to get by. She knew as early as 2015 that she had a problem, but the hamster wheel of moderation kept her stuck. Shame eventually led her to hiding her drinking, to the point that she even began to avoid drinking around her husband. Alcohol Explained by William Porter and Quit Like a Woman by Holly Whitaker were instrumental in opening Kelly's eyes to realize the truth: She wasn't the problem. Alcohol was the problem. After a few stops and starts, in March of 2023 she quit for good! She has found the community she craved in The Sober Mom Life Cafe and she leans on podcasts and self care in order to stay sober. It has felt like a hard road, and she is so proud of herself for what she has accomplished! Join us in the The Sober Mom Life Cafe! Better Help: www.betterhelp.com/elevator - 10% off your first month. #sponsored [04:12] Thoughts from Paul: There was a great question during our Dry January class that asked “Why don't alcoholics get hangovers?” Paul did a YouTube video about this but wanted to share more here. Truth is, they do get hangovers, but they usually begin drinking before the full amount of alcohol can be metabolized in their system that they drank the day or night before. As tolerance develops with alcohol, the hangover gets pushed back later in the day the next day. A chronic drinker who drinks 10-15 drinks daily, won't begin the hangover cycle at 8am the next morning, but more likely, they will experience the worst of the withdrawal effects later that day or evening. Chronic drinkers are almost always experiencing a low to mid-grade hangover. In other words, they feel like shit all the time. First alcohol takes you to a place where you are no longer drinking to feel good, but to simply feel normal. They you are drinking to simply not feel like death. And then the worst place is when you are simply drinking not to die. *HUGE ASTERISK* Alcohol is the most dangerous substance to detox from. If you have been drinking 5-8 drinks daily, for months or years, then it's a very good idea to seek medical attention when detoxing. Go Brewing. Use the code ELEVATOR for 15% off. [09:26] Kris introduces Lara: Lara is married and they have two dogs. After teaching preschool for 12-13 years she now teaches Pilates. She enjoys going to concerts and spending time outdoors. Lara had limited exposure to alcohol until she went to college. While there, she found friends, and they drank regularly. What started out as being fun soon became a way for Lara to ignore her mental health issues that were creating a dark depression. After graduating and the issues getting worse, she ended up going to a psych ward for a few weeks and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She moved back home to live with her parents while she figured out what life was going to look like with the new diagnosis. She continued to drink in spite of the medications. Lara went to grad school in Colorado and was surrounded by friends and the drinking felt normal. She wasn't having major consequences until after getting married and she realized the drinking was happening all the time. Her husband ended up quitting drinking and while Lara supported him by quitting too, she didn't feel that she had a problem. Lara found herself reaching out to others to help support her as the spouse of someone quitting drinking. Over time she started realizing that recovery was her path as well. Lara says that she has learned that she knows how to ask for help if she needs it now. She and her husband share a sobriety date and their life has done a 180. Alcohol is no longer an issue, and they just enjoy living life. Lara's favorite resource in recovery: Holly Whitaker's book Quit Like a Woman. Lara's parting piece of guidance: Just find one person who you can talk to. Bookstagrammer Hailey Conroy is on the pod today! Hailey had been a weekend binge drinker through high school, college, and even law school, despite her Irish family history of alcohol abuse. She quit during pregnancy, but when her twins were born at 23 weeks, the bottom fell out. Her son passed after 3 days, and her daughter fought to live in the NICU for 9 months. Her 2 glass habit was also born. Alcohol was no longer a social tool for the weekend. It became a daily tool to bludgeon away the feelings so they didn't swallow her up. Several years and several kids later, Hailey still had her daily mommy wine. She regularly swore off of it, and then caved in the Target alcohol aisle because “two drinks isn't really a problem.” It was. Hailey quit the day after finishing Holly Whitaker's book, Quit Like a Woman, and soon noticed that her anxiety decreased, her nightly insomnia disappeared, and the redness around her nose vanished. Now 7 months sober, Hailey wants to bust the myths around “healthy” alcohol moderation. Hailey is a book blogger who shares quit lit recommendations, sober firsts, and fun reels! And oh my goodness I am pumped to be back! This is my first official episode of 2024 (last weeks episode was recorded in 2023) So hello! Welcome to 2024!! How is it going so far? Are you loving it? Or is it already kicking you in the butt? Today's episode is going to be a little different than the normal straight up business advice episodes…I'm going to tell you and share with you how I'm doing…how I'm really doing… I'm going to share my recent decision to go "sober curious" over the holidays Why I decided to do this, where I'm at today, and my future plans with alcohol Recapping my recent breath-work ceremony My word of the year And all the future plans and goals I have lined up for 2024 This is defiantly more of an open, honest, raw, real, and vulnerable episode for me, so thank for you giving me the space. Let's just dive right in, shall we?! Book I mentioned in the podcast: Quit Like a Woman
“For years, I was asking myself whether or not I was an alcoholic versus really asking myself whether or not alcohol was actually providing any benefit to me. And for me, it was just like, This realization when I stopped drinking that I had been asking the wrong question for my whole drinking career and like, why are we not asking the question? We're just like, we're drinking, it's compulsory in our society. It's exceptional if you don't drink. And then it's also this very addictive drug that's marketed to us in a way that totally overrides our ability to like make rational choices around it. It's like the most socially accepted drug that you can use and like, we just don't have meaningful conversations or informed consent or any, you know, so for me, a huge part of me quitting drinking, which I did in 2013, it was this realization of Intellectually understanding I had been asking the wrong question which for me was a huge empowerment and part of the reason I was able to quit.” So says Holly Whitaker, author of the New York Times bestselling Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol. I had heard about Holly long before I met her, primarily because she was disrupting recovery culture and many people did not like this. But the more I learned about her, the more I spoke to her, the more I witnessed her impact on culture, the more I was completely taken by both her brilliance and her willingness to say the things. Be warned: If you read her book, you'll never think about alcohol again. In its pages, she recontextualizes the way we've been trained to normalize booze—and also the way the current recovery scene is shaped for the consciousness, and egos, of men. She's created companies in the vein of a feminine-centered recovery, and it feels like she's just getting started in the way we talk about addictive substances—and addiction. Those who struggle will find a lot of relief in her words, and I understand why. Sipping a cocktail or choosing a bottle of wine for the table are actions laden with meaning. Alcohol can frame you as fun, sexy, successful or social. Holly Whitaker helps take some of the power away from what she calls "just a liquid."Reframing community. Finding a community to support your recovery and sobriety can be difficult — and in some cases, impossible. But community can take many different forms, and we've got some ideas on what those could be.Can't get enough?Purchase Holly's book "Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol."From Bookshop.orgFrom AmazonFrom Barnes & Noble Want to read more on the topic? Hey! It's Che Diaz! :/// jkjk - Here we are with another episode! This time recapping the most hair-raising episode from season one of And Just Like That... For the first time on Girlblogger, I'm firing snarky commentary with a guest! My dear friend Connor and I decided to embark on this rewatch journey together. Listen to us divulge all of our thoughts on How to Quit Like a Woman, Rock's questionable name change, Carrie's legendary diaphragm story, and of course Che Diaz (aka The Babadook). My fav episode yet! Check it out
Stop for a second and ask yourself the following: if you meet a woman who tells you she isn't drinking, do you assume she's pregnant? Don't lie to me.I spent nearly a year as a mostly sober - ok, fine a California-mostly-sober person. I went on Lexipro last May and I liked not feeling anxious and depressed, but I did not enjoy browning out. So, out with the booze and out with the blues. After nearly a year of the pregnant pauses (that's a lazy pun) that followed explaining that I wasn't drinking, I just started saying, "and no, I'm not pregnant."Christina Heiser, whose voice you'll hear on the podcast this week, stopped drinking in December of 2021 and kept it up. She's a journalist, and so, she's observed and written about how it felt, the impact and why she did it. After she penned 5 Things That Happened When I Quit Drinking for a Year, I knew I'd found a kindred spirit. We spend some time on the episode talking about our gluten *stuff* and she and I connected on how easy it is to accidentally eat gluten while you are impaired. And because she is incredibly prepared at all times, Christina also came with her own links and resources. So don't hesitate to dive into her favorite influencers, products and links.References: 5 Things That Happened When I Quit Drinking for a YearN/A drinks: Boisson - an online N/A marketplaceBetter Rhodes - an online N/A marketplaceGhiaHoplarkMondayCleanCoGiesen Quit Lit (books about drinking less)Quit Like a Woman by Holly WhitakerThe Unexpected Joy of Being Sober by Catherine GrayDrinking Games by Sarah LevyThe Dry Challenge by Hilary SheinbaumSober influencers@shestayssober (Sarah Pottieger)@noboozebabes (Shea Gomez)@joinsoberish (Kayla Lyons)@themindfulmocktail (Natalie Battaglia)

Holly Whitaker, author of The New York Times best-selling book Quit Like A Woman, The Radical Choice To Not Drink In A Culture Obsessed with Alcohol, was an integral part of my decision to stop drinking and support in early sobriety and her work has helped thousands of women. When I was 60 days sober I signed up for Holly Whitaker's Hip Sobriety School, an eight-week sober coaching group program with tools, resources and lessons from Holly on “how to quit drinking when you think you can't”. And when Holly's book, Quit Like A Woman, was released a few years later I read it and how the book made her story, tools, research and holistic approach to sobriety available to a wider audience. The book has been described as a groundbreaking look at drinking culture and a road map to cutting out alcohol in order to live our best lives without the crutch of intoxication that will change the way you look at drinking forever. I was honored to have Holly come on The Hello Someday Podcast to talk about her book, Quit Like A Woman, The Radical Choice To Not Drink In A Culture Obsessed with Alcohol, the early days of Hip Sobriety School and how much the recovery movement has shifted in the last 10 years. How to live the best life you can is the main focus of this conversation between Paul Merriman, Chris Pedersen, Daryl Bahls and Craig Appl, volunteer creator of The Merriman Financial Education Lifetime Calculator. Craig discusses the FIRE movement community and his experience at a Chautauqua Conference about financial independence outside Bogotá Colombia earlier this year. Craig addresses the differences between traditional investors and those focused on earlier retirement (high savings, low cost of living, simple investment portfolios) and how to create more happiness in your life. We are thrilled to introduce today's guest, Jen Gilhoi. Jen is an event experience strategist and founder of Sparktrack, (sparktrack.com), where she's been focusing on event experiences, the follow-up, and strategic story writing for a decade. In her life and work she is fascinated with the art of gathering and intentional conversations. She especially loves lingering behind and reliving moments others have long since moved on from. It's in her DNA. In 2014, she moved on from active addiction and began a sober lifestyle. As an introvert and moderate empath, she's discovered that the written word is her avenue to invite others into inquiry and shatter stigmas around addiction. She launched her personal brand, jengilhoi.com in 2021, to focus on shifting the narrative around sobriety to #SoberNotSomber. Jen invites self and social inquiry into alcohol use and shatters stigmas through her writing, conversations, and inclusive events. Her work in the sober space is not about self-help and peer-to-peer support; rather it's about creating healthier environments that support a wide range of sober choices. She's also a board member of Dissonance, an organization that promotes mental health and recovery in and through the arts. Jen's mission is to normalize not drinking and to bring conversations around alcohol-free workplaces and alcohol-free happy hours to corporate events. This is such a powerful and relevant conversation talking about how we as a society can normalize not drinking and how to become sober curious, even if you choose to drink alcohol. In this episode you will learn: Jen's three pillars to becoming sober, which include working with yourself, working with your peers and working on your environment. How to explore your relationship with alcohol and experiment with not drinking in small doses. The mindset shift that needs to occur to overcome the fear of missing out (FOMO) or the misconception that you have to drink to be fun. Why more people are becoming "sober curious" and how you don't have to be an alcoholic to choose not to drink. How to create a sober life without having to "white knuckle" it through your transition. How shame and stigma are often associated with becoming sober. How your environment can be a barrier to having a social experience. How to have conversations with your teens about alcohol use and modeling good behavior. This is an eye opening and powerful conversation that you won't want to miss!
