In this episode of Page Burners, we wrap up our discussion of Night of Knives by Ian C. Esslemont, covering Chapters 4, 5, and the epilogue—and there's a lot to unpack. From the mysterious Stormriders to the shadowy aftermath of Kellenved and Dancer's ascension, we dive into what wasn't shown just as much as what was. Does the book's decision to keep major events off-page strengthen its mythic tone, or leave the story feeling incomplete? We spend time breaking down Kiska and Temper as our POV characters—whether their arcs land emotionally, and how they function within the larger Malazan Book of the Fallen universe. We also explore the shifting portrayal of characters like Tayschrenn, the lingering mystery of the Stormriders, and the role of ordinary people caught in world-changing events.Along the way, we debate expectations vs execution, the strengths and weaknesses of Esslemont's storytelling, and whether Night of Knives truly works as a standalone—or feels more like a missing piece of a much larger puzzle. If you've ever wondered what really happened that night… you're not alone.Next Episode: We begin The Bonehunters by Steven Erikson, reading through Chapter 2.

Markets were driven by headlines from the Trump–Xi summit in Beijing, where progress on trade and a surprise easing of US chip export restrictions to major Chinese tech firms lifted sentiment, particularly in technology. European equities closed higher and US indices reached fresh record highs, supported by strong earnings from Cisco, although gains in Asia faded as rising Treasury yields and renewed rate hike expectations weighed on sentiment. Corporate news was mixed, while Crypto-related stocks rallied following regulatory progress. Commodities showed divergence, with oil edging higher and metals softer. Overnight, Asian equities declined broadly, led by a sharp sell-off in South Korea. We're back in the world of Malazan—this time stepping into new territory with Night of Knives by Ian C. Esslemont. In this episode, the crew begins their first-ever discussion of Esslemont's work, breaking down the prologue and first two chapters of this gothic, atmospheric entry into the Malazan universe. Send me a messageWhat if you could become immune to criticism, insults, and the "monkeys" beating their chests around you? In this video, we explore why getting comfortable with being disliked is actually the ultimate secret to a peaceful life. Most of us spend our lives as "ants" caught in an intense internal conflict, reacting to every "flavor" of personality we encounter. Todd Perelmuter breaks down the psychology of the ego, explaining why yelling makes you lose your standing and how to reclaim your power through calm, firm presence.Key Takeaways:• The Ice Cream Theory: Why people's preferences have everything to do with them and nothing to do with you.• The "Monkey" Trap: How reacting with anger diminishes your strength and keeps you in a cycle of dissatisfaction.• Unlearning the Yell: Todd shares his personal journey from growing up in a home of yelling to discovering spiritual stillness.• The Power of Pity: Why the most rational response to cruelty isn't rage—it's compassion for the person trapped in their own mind.If you've ever regretted losing your cool or felt crushed by someone else's words, this video is your manual for taking back control. What if anger isn't the real problem… but how we handle it is?In this message, we take an honest look at anger, not as something to ignore or suppress, but something to understand and transform. Because the truth is, anger can either destroy relationships or reveal what we truly care about.Drawing from Proverbs and the character of God, this message explores the difference between sinful anger that controls us and godly anger that is governed with wisdom. You'll see how quickly anger can escalate in everyday moments, in our words, reactions, and relationships, and how easily it can take over if left unchecked. But this isn't just about behavior. It's about the heart.Scripture shows us that God Himself gets angry, yet He is always slow to anger, patient, and perfectly just. And through Jesus Christ, we see both the seriousness of sin and the depth of God's grace, as His righteous anger is ultimately satisfied at the cross. This message will challenge you to:Recognize the difference between reacting and respondingUnderstand what your anger is actually revealingLearn how to slow down instead of blowing upReplace resentment with forgiveness rooted in the gospelBecome a peacemaker in a culture fueled by outrageBecause following Jesus doesn't mean you never feel anger, it means you no longer let anger lead your life.If you've ever struggled with frustration, conflict, or being easily offended… this is for you.

In the Fall of 2024, Ken had been having symptoms that seemed to keep lingering on. He decided to go to the doctors and see what was happening. Through tests, they told Ken that he had pancreatic cancer. The diagnosis was bleak and time was not on his side. He and his wife Holly leaned upon the Lord and one another to find the strength, courage and trust that they had built together since their marriage in September 1996. Join me today as Holly & Ken share their unique courtship and love for one another that has strengthened them through this trial of terminal cancer. In April 1975, Marion D Hanks gave a talk titled, Trust in the Lord. In it he said, “As life supplies its store of tribulation we need the consolation that comes with knowing that God is good and that he is near, that he understands, and that he loves us and will help us and strengthen us for the realities of a world where sin and affliction exist. And while I'm talking about principles this morning, I am not really thinking in the abstract, but I'm thinking of many noble souls who have met difficulties with courage” ….. Comfort came to them in the quiet knowledge of the nearness of a Savior who himself had not been spared the most keen and intense suffering, who himself had drunk of the bitter cup.”“From this source—from God and Christ—wisdom and strength can be found that will make endurance possible, and relationships generous and helpful, that will lead to abundancy of life and to everlasting life. God will “temper the wind to the shorn lamb,” and help us to endure all things and to continue to maintain integrity in the face of the siren song of invitation to “curse God and die”—die spiritually, die as to things pertaining to righteousness, die to hope and holiness and faith in a future where there is no corruption and no pain.”“Christ came that men might have life abundant and life eternal, and he declared that “this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” (John 17:3.)“Our religion is “not weight, it is wings.” It can carry us through the dark times, the bitter cup. It will be with us in the fiery furnace and the deep pit. It will accompany us to the hospital room and to the place of bereavement. It can guarantee us the presence of a Captain on the rough voyage. It is, in short, not the path to easy disposition of problems, but the comforting assurance of the eternal light, by which we may see, and the eternal warmth, which we may feel. “The Lord is good: Blessed is the man that trusteth in him.” (Ps. 34:8.)”

All the games reviewed including Manchester City's victory against Arsenal which leaves us with an exciting title run-in, Liverpool stole the Merseyside Derby late on, whilst there was also late heartbreak for Tottenham against Brighton and Chelsea's woes continued as they were beaten by Manchester United. Are you having a hard time connecting with your kid to know what they're up to?  By the age of 10, kids may start to have short answers like “fine” and speak less to us parents because their brains develop and start navigating more independence over parental guidance. As parents, we want to make sure what is happening with our kids and it can be frustrating to get them to share more which sometimes leads to yelling.  Kids are sensitive to our emotions as parents and they would rather distance themselves and become more mute when met with frustration and stress.  In this episode of Habits & Hustle, I share some communication strategies that I learned from the communication experts and behavioral psychologists I met from this podcast and how it worked for me and my sons.   It is so possible to have fun and engaging conversations with your kids without them feeling dismissed or ignored and you pulling your hair out of frustration. Let's dive in! What's Discussed: (01:30) The first rule: what active listening actually looks like and why it matters. (02:12) Why being physically present isn't the same as being mentally present. (03:16) The environments where kids open up the most and why. (04:16) Why "how was school?" gets you nowhere and what to ask instead. (05:00) How sharing your own stories builds a connection with your kids. (05:28) Why baby talk sets kids back and talking to them like mini adults works better. (08:04) Why dedicated one-on-one time makes kids feel special. (08:31) How staying patient and calm gets better results than losing your temper. (10:05) Why kids are intuitive and can sense when something is real versus not. (10:27) What respecting your child's boundaries actually looks like. (11:13) Why forcing kids to hug or kiss people teaches them the wrong lesson. Thank you to my sponsors!Kion: Visit getkion.com/habits for 20% off. Other guests include Rita Heikenfeld with granola recipes using foods mentioned in the Bible, and Gary Michuta on his new book about Old Testament prophecies that point to Jesus. Plus news, weather, sports, and more… ***** Prayer of St. Albert the Great Govern my heart O Lord, lest it drift into useless and disordered thoughts. Do not permit me to become excessively preoccupied with anything at all, even matters and concerns that are useful and good in themselves. Temper the affections of my soul so that I may neither love nor hate anything in a way that exceeds due proportions. Let me neither rejoice nor be saddened beyond the measure that is fitting and rational. Amen ***** RECIPES FROM RITA: MAPLE GRANOLA Ingredients 3 cups old fashioned rolled oats – don’t use quick or instant since they will bake up too powdery 1-1/2 cups nuts of your choice – I used pecan, walnut and almond pieces 1/2 cup sesame seeds 1/2 cup sunflower seeds 1/4 cup salted butter – if using unsalted, add 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup pure maple syrup 1-2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar – I used light brown 1 cup or so dried fruit Instructions Preheat oven to 325. Combine oats, nuts, seeds and, if using, salt. In a saucepan, stir together butter, maple syrup, vanilla and sugar. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, then lower to a simmer and cook about 5 minutes. That’s enough time for sugar to dissolve. Pour maple syrup mixture over oats mixture and stir until well coated. Spray a cookie sheet with cooking spray and spread mixture out in even layer. Bake, stirring occasionally, about 20 minutes or so, until golden. Remove and let cool. It will get crispier as it cools.Stir in fruit. Store in covered container at room temperature up to 2 weeks. Makes about 6 cups. ***** Full list of guestsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Overwhelmed by your kid's meltdowns, tantrums and big reactions? When outbursts keep repeating, it's not bad parenting—it's a stressed nervous system. In this episode, Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge, expert in Regulation First Parenting™ and childhood emotional dysregulation, shows you how to calm the brain first and create lasting change. So many parents come to me feeling overwhelmed, walking on eggshells, bracing for the next explosion. When your child's meltdowns happen over and over, it creates fear, frustration, and emotional exhaustion. When meltdowns keep happening despite your best efforts, it's not bad parenting. It's nervous system overload. In this episode, I'll show you why tantrums repeat—and how to calm the brain first. Why do my child's meltdowns keep happening no matter what I try? Most parents think if they just find the right consequence, reward, or script, they can stop tantrums. But meltdowns aren't logic problems—they're biology. When stress spikes:The amygdala hijacks the brainStress hormones surgeThe thinking brain goes offlineNo reasoning. No listening. No learning. From the outside, it looks like defiance or a power struggle. Inside, your child's nervous system feels threat, loss of control, or sensory overload. It's not about effort—it's about order. Why do I feel so overwhelmed by my kid's meltdowns?Repeated tantrums and meltdowns create hypervigilance. You start anticipating the next explosion before it happens. That dread? It's real. Two dysregulated nervous systems in one home feels like chaos—because it is.You may notice:Emotional exhaustionBracing before transitionsFeeling overwhelmed even during calm momentsThis isn't weakness. It's biology. Here's the truth: You can't calm a child if your own nervous system is in fight-or-flight. Your regulation is the intervention. Why doesn't punishing or lecturing stop tantrums? You can't consequence your way out of a nervous system meltdown.Time outs. Threats. Removing screen time. Lectures. Most families try these. But during child's tantrums, executive functioning isn't accessible. No regulation = no access to problem-solving skills. That's why managing tantrums mid-explosion rarely works.Instead:Regulate first—you, not themDrop your shouldersTake deep breathsSoften your toneKids borrow your calm before they build their own.How can I stop tantrums before they explode? Here's where change happens: the yellow light, not the red.Meltdowns don't start with screaming. They start with:IrritabilityRigidityWhiningAvoidanceZoning outThese are clues about your child's triggers.Ask:Is there sensory overload? Are transitions abrupt? Is sleep solid? Is their stress cup already full? It's all about the total stress load. You shrink tantrums and meltdowns by lowering baseline stress, not by controlling behavior.

For more information on how to control your anger, visit angersecrets.com.In this episode, anger expert Alastair Duhs shares three practical steps to help you control your anger before it takes over. If you've ever said something you regret in the heat of the moment, or felt like your anger erupts before you even realise what's happening, this episode explains exactly why that happens and what you can do about it starting today.Rather than offering generic advice like "count to ten" or "take a deep breath," Alastair breaks down the real mechanics of anger: why it escalates so fast, what's actually driving it beneath the surface and how better communication can transform even the most stuck relationship patterns.Key Takeaways:You can't control your anger if you don't know it's happening. Learning to spot your personal early warning signs before anger peaks is the most important first step.Your anger isn't caused by what happens to you. It's caused by what you think about what happens to you. Changing the thought changes the response.Beneath every repeated trigger is usually a rigid belief, and once you can see it clearly, you can begin to shift it.Active listening is one of the most powerful anger management tools in relationships. When people feel truly heard, defensiveness drops and real conversations become possible. These are skills, not personality traits. They get easier with practice.Resources & Next Steps:If you'd like support controlling your anger and building calmer, more loving relationships:Visit: angersecrets.comBook a free 30-minute phone callAccess the free training on "Breaking The Anger Cycle"

We all know that expression, "One day I'll look back on this and laugh." Usually, it takes a few years. But is there a way to speed up that process? Is there a way to laugh and enjoy each moment as if we were looking back on it years from now?The key to why we can look back and laugh as something difficult is distance. Emotional, physical, and chronological distance. Distance gives us a feeling of safety, clarity, perspective. In this podcast, I share how we can all create instant distance so that life's unwanted surprises don't seem so significant.
