Anger and losing your temper is very common despite the destructive impact it can have. In some ways, it is almost glorified particularly in men and seen as something that makes you powerful when in fact anger means you lost control and you are at your weakest. In this episode, we break down where anger comes from, the real impact it has on your life, and give you the exact process to take control and stop losing your temper. Anger is not a sin and everyone gets anger. Giving in to your anger and allowing it to control you makes you a fool. Today we're joined by one of the most in demand chefs in the world in the genius Jocky Petrie who's overseen operations for both Heston Blumenthal and Gordon Ramsay globally, whilst casually also creating some of the most famous dishes in the world whilst he was Head Pastry Chef at The Fat Duck during its golden era. Today on the podcast we uncover his incredible story which has taken him from a remote village in Scotland to working at the craziest 3 Michelin Star restaurant in America to eventually becoming Heston's right hand man where he created some of the most famous dishes in the world. After 10 years pushing the culinary boundaries with Heston, Chef Jocky ended up being put in charge of Gordon Ramsay's business empire globally and additionally landed the role as Sous Chef on the multi-award winning TV show 'Hells Kitchen'. He now finds himself back working alongside Heston, as he's pushing the boundaries of food innovation once again, as they once more plan to be the greatest restaurant in the world. In this latest episode of In Theory, Disha Karnad Jani interviews Robert Darnton, Professor Emeritus and University Librarian Emeritus at Harvard University, about his recent book, The Revolutionary Temper: Paris, 1748-1789 (W. W. Norton, 2024), also published in French translation: L'humeur révolutionnaire: Paris, 1748-1789 (trans. Hélène Borraz, Gallimard, 2024). Darnton traces how the antecedents to revolution circulated among the Parisian public in the decades before the storming of the Bastille, through their everyday oppositions to the rising price of bread, the overreaches of the monarchy, and the policing of poor neighborhoods. Through their growing sense that the powerful in their society were not governing as they should, ordinary people in Paris began to acquire a shared feeling of discontent, and showed this through many forms of public performance and protest. Darnton tracks this as the development of a "revolutionary temper" in Paris, one which made the population ready to change their world in a matter of decades.

"The philosopher might speculate, but the theologian must submit to learn." St. John Henry Newman's Oxford Sermons, delivered during his time as an Anglican preacher at the University of Oxford, were instrumental in shaping the Oxford Movement, which sought to revive High Church traditions within the Church of England. In this collection of fifteen sermons, Newman especially explores the relationship between faith and reason, and lays the groundwork for themes he would later develop in works like his Grammar of Assent and Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine. In addition to the profound influence these sermons had on both Anglican and Catholic theology, they also bore a personal significance for Newman's own conversion to Catholicism years later. In this first sermon, Newman argues that it was Christianity which first promoted a properly philosophical disposition, by encouraging a mindset and instilling the virtues essential for a truly scientific approach to the pursuit of truth. EP:126 Hey friends! I just recorded a new episode of the Thrive Like a Parent podcast all about losing your temper with your kids. As a mom, I know how hard this can be - we all have those moments where we just feel like we're at the end of our rope. But I want you to know that it doesn't make you a bad parent. It just means you need to take care of yourself, whether that's taking a break, practicing self-care, or finding healthy ways to manage your emotions. In this episode, I get real about my own struggles with traditional "play" activities, and how I've learned to connect with my kids in my own unique way. I also share my honest thoughts on some popular parenting experts and methods - not everything works for every family, and that's okay! The key is being kind to yourself, setting boundaries, and making time for your own mental health. When we do that, we can show up as calmer, more regulated parents. I hope this episode gives you the validation and encouragement you need. You're doing an amazing job, even on the tough days. Sending you all my love! #parenting #selfcare #mentalhealth #emotionalregulation #parentingtips #thrivelikeaparent Links & Resources:

6 Guidelines: Mind Your Temper #RTTBROS #Nightlight Mind Your Temper James 1:19-20 - "Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God." Like a storm that gathers suddenly, anger can overwhelm our reason in mere moments. Recently, when someone's careless actions caused me significant harm, I felt that familiar heat rising - the quickened pulse, the tightened fists, the surge of harsh words ready to spill forth. Yet in that moment, the Holy Spirit brought to mind Solomon's wisdom: "He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city" (Proverbs 16:32). Anger itself isn't sinful - even our Lord Jesus displayed righteous anger at the temple's desecration. But how swiftly our human anger can turn destructive, leaving wounds that take years to heal. Ephesians 4:26 provides our guideline: "Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath." I've learned that managing temper requires both vigilance and humility. When anger rises, we must step back, breathe deeply, and remember that "A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger" (Proverbs 15:1). Often, tomorrow's perspective reveals today's anger as unnecessary, even foolish. Prayer: Lord, grant us mastery over our tempers, that in moments of provocation we might reflect thy patience and grace. Help us channel our anger into righteous action rather than destructive reaction. In Jesus' name, Amen. Be sure to Like, Share, Follow and subscribe it helps get the word out. https://linktr.ee/rttbros

We've all done it: something makes us mad and we start punching others with our words. Let's learn to use our words according to God's design. In this message, Pastor Jamie shares how we can overcome angry words.Angry words are the idle words and the ugly words we say when we get mad. Being angry is not a sin.Jesus got angry.Mark 3:5 ESV The goal for a Christian isn't to never get angry; the goal is never let anger cause you to sin.Ephesians 4:26-27 (Psalm 4:4)ESV Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.Live WITH your anger but don't live BY your anger. How do we stop angry words?1. Ask God to be your editor, not your janitor. In our anger we often say whatever comes to mind and we make a mess. But God doesn't just want to be your janitor and clean up your mess; He wants to be your editor and clean up your mouth.Prov 17:27-28 NLT We've got to stop giving ourselves permission to say everything we think. 2. Learn to intentionally respond, not instinctively react. An intentional response is measured, thoughtful, and deliberate. An instinctive reaction is unrestrained, emotional, and immediate. Proverbs 12:16 NIV Fools show their annoyance at once, but the prudent overlook an insult. 3. Remove "fighting words" from your vocabulary.Fighting words are words to that cause people to fight about things instead of fix things.Prov 12:18 NIV The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.Examples of fighting words:Always/neverName calling/insultsBringing up the pastTone 4. Adopt God's perspective on people.Don't treat people based on who you think they are, treat them based on who God says they are. 2 Corinthians 5:15-16 NLT "Rudeness is the weak man's imitation of strength." - Eric HofferChristians are the dwelling place of God. When you speak angry words at Christians, you are trashing God's house. If you're not kind to others, God may have to get on their side to defend them against you! Ever heard someone called a "loose cannon?"That phrase came from the fact that cannons on ships had wheels for when it recoiled when being shot. A loose cannon was one that wasn't properly secured and it would kick back, roll everywhere and endanger the crew on the ship. Without restraints, a loose cannon can potentially not just destroy enemy ships, but destroy the ship its on. We are loose cannons when we declare war with our words when there is no war. We're a loose cannon when we don't restrain our words and hurt our friends and family with "friendly fire." Don't be a loose cannon and destroy your own ship. Are you speaking angry words?
James 1 tells us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. As believers, we need to go to the Lord first before we deal with anything horizontally. We must fall back on our training and speak with wisdom and kindness to others. Don't let something awful come out of your mouth that you can't take back.

Sonia C. is feeling the need for moving energy, but rain is making it hard to enjoy a walk in Paris. Sabrina is feeling the change of seasons and the change of light. Sonia T. is rejuvenating herself with an early morning cup of coffee and a walk around the block. The recent hurricanes and tornadoes are affecting all of us, and what's happening with your personal ups and downs deserve your attention too. Listening to your body's limitations is the key to enjoying the best and hardest of days! This week's theme is: Thrive as an empath without absorbing all of the negativity around you. Highlights: Listening to your body's limitations will help you find energy again. [2:42] Choosing to self-select out of stressful conversations doesn't mean you don't care! [4:02] Empaths must observe without absorbing all that is around them. [5:57] Sonia C. chose not to immediately react when friends hurt her, which wasn't easy to do. [7:15] The difference between personal and non-personal awareness response is key. [11:20] Sonia T.'s healing journey in Chile was met with Sonia C.'s love language – a clean house! [13:25] Your feelings and emotions are telling you what you truly value – listen to them! [20:30] Try writing a letter to express yourself and then throw that letter away. [22:20] Pause and let things unfold. You may be surprised at what happens next. [26:45] See it. Say it. Sort it. [29:45] Is this really your business? Not everything that's happening around you is about you. [31:20] Be proud of yourself and how you are showing up! [38:29] Tool of the week. [40:07] Question of the week: As an empath, how can I be a beacon of light instead of a sponge of negative and fearful vibes? [45:02] The recent hurricanes have impacted all of us! Empaths especially have to be careful to observe what is happening around them without absorbing all of it, because not everything that is happening around you is yours to pick up! Make sure you have both a personal and non-personal awareness person in your corner to help you see things as they really are. You need a friend who can tell you when it's time to send the email and when it's time to walk away from the computer. Try zooming out and considering the comedy in the experience. Or pause and see how things play out. Or, as Sonia C. sees in London, quickly see it, say it, and sort it. Then move on! Empaths want to take on everything that is happening around them, but not everything is about you. Be careful about what you take on, and be proud of how your energy is impacting you and everyone around you. Tool of the Week: See it. Say it. Sort it! Question of the week: How can I be sure that I'm taking the course that is true to myself? We don't need accomplishments to feel good or be good enough. If only Napoleon had listened to his own advice.

Maurice Ashley: Move by Move Maurice Ashley is a Chess Grandmaster, an ESPN commentator, a three-time national championship coach, and an author. In 1999 he earned the title of Chess Grandmaster, making him the first Black Grandmaster in the game's history, and in 2016 he was inducted into the US Chess Hall of Fame. He's the author of Move by Move: Life Lessons on and off the Chessboard*. There was a time that you could get a degree or a certification and you've be set on your learning for awhile. Those days are long gone. With change happening at the speed of thought, we must keep improving. In this conversation, Maurice and I discuss the mindsets and tactics that will help you keep growing. Key Points Jazz artists don't think about each note, but instinctively know how to make beautiful music. The best chess players are like this. Elite performers constantly look for ways to cultivate the beginner's mindset. Chess players who pay attention to the endgame are less likely to get caught up only in the tactics. The most vulnerable time for a chess player is when they have a big lead. Poor performers avoid spending time with their mistakes. The best players learn from them through debrief. Determine in advance where you need to stay hyper-focused. Temper overconfidence by posing additional in-game challenges for yourself and your team.
