On episode 596 of The Knife Junkie Podcast, Bob DeMarco speaks with Jess Hoffman of J. Hoffman Knives. Jess is a Northeast Wisconsin knifemaker who has transformed his hobby into a part-time career, making heirloom quality fixed blade knives from scratch for outdoor enthusiasts. His first knife was made with nothing but a file and elbow grease, but today he runs a fully-equipped shop producing knives that sell out at retailers like Knives Ship Free.Jess shares insights into his knife-making process, from his preference for heat treating before grinding to his philosophy on creating knives as functional tools rather than display pieces. His designs, many named after Irish counties as a nod to his family heritage, focus on ergonomics and practical use. Unlike many knife makers who aim to go full-time, Jess is content keeping his craft as a supplementary passion that will eventually support his retirement. The conversation covers the technical aspects of knife making, including steel selection, handle materials, and grind styles, along with business strategies and Jess's experiences at Blade Show. Listeners will appreciate his advice for new makers, emphasizing the value of mentorship and hands-on learning over YouTube tutorials. On this edition of The Knife Junkie Podcast (Episode 588), Bob DeMarco speaks with custom knife maker Bobby Raines II, who specializes in hand-forged Bowie knives that are as functional as they are beautiful.Bobby shared his journey from making his first "knife-like object" at age 12 to creating his signature "Rainmaker" Bowie, which has gained recognition through knife expert Rolando Escotada. What sets Bobby's work apart is his commitment to traditional forging techniques rather than stock removal, allowing him to create knives that "move like a feather but hit like a sledgehammer."Drawing inspiration from legendary knifemakers Bill Bagwell and James Keating, Bobby's designs combine historical accuracy with practical innovations. He demonstrates how every aspect of his knives—from the sharpened swedge to the ergonomic handles—is designed with purpose, particularly for fighting applications.Whether you're a collector, practitioner, or simply appreciate fine craftsmanship, you'll want to hear Bobby's insights on the art and tradition of American knife making. A self-proclaimed "MAGA Junkie" admitted during a tearful interview that she now regrets voting for Donald Trump after her job at the US Treasury was terminated by Elon Musk and his DOGE force. The former Trump supporter admits that she was all-in on Trump, with flags, shirts, and other MAGA gear all over the place, but now she realizes that she messed up. These people might be reachable after all, as Farron explains. The Trump administration has managed to anger most countries in North America and Europe, so now they've moved on to alienating our allies in Asia. During a recent press briefing, Karoline Leavitt made up an insane claim that Japan is putting tariffs on imported rice and that the US is going to retaliate, but Japanese officials pointed out that this was a complete fabrication from Leavitt. They then, politely, demanded that the administration put an end to the "confusion and chaos" that their tariff lies are causing. Donald Trump appears to be hellbent on making Canada a part of the United States, but according to a new survey, millions of Americans would rather see their state become a part of Canada. Roughly 20% of US residents in a Canadian survey said they'd rather join Canada than vice versa, a shocking number that shows the distaste for Trump and his policies. Furthermore, a survey from the journal Nature found that scientists and researchers are also wanting to become either Canadian or European to escape Trump's assault on science. Steve Bannon thinks that the writing may already be on the wall for Donald Trump following the latest order from Judge James Boasberg, and Bannon admitted on his show last week that he thinks Trump is going to prison - but only if a Democrat wins the White House in 2028. The truth is that Trump should ALREADY be in prison for the crimes he was convicted for, and he managed to avoid that. But Bannon, as usual, has ulterior motives for this claim, and Farron exposes what's really happening.Text and and let us know your thoughts on today's stories!Subscribe to our YouTube channel to stay up to date on all of Farron's content: https://www.youtube.com/FarronBalancedFollow Farron on social media!
