Lizbeth Mateo has been an immigrant rights organizer for over 10 years, and currently runs an immigration and worker's compensation legal practice in Los Angeles, California. Born in a Zapotec community in Oaxaca (wahaca), Mexico, Lizbeth became one of the first undocumented young people to risk deportation to demand passage of the Dream Act, when she was arrested in 2010 during a sit-in inside the office of Senator John McCain. In 2013, a few weeks before starting law school, Lizbeth and two other organizers traveled to Mexico and returned with six previously deported youth; all 9 successfully returned home to the U.S. after spending 17 days in an Arizona detention center. The first in her family to graduate from college, Lizbeth earned her J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law in 2016 and got sworn in as an attorney in June 2017 by then Senate President Pro-Tem Kevin the Leon. Despite meeting the requirements for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, the Obama Administration denied Lizbeth's DACA application 8 days before Donald Trump's inauguration. As an attorney and owner of the Law Office of Lizbeth Mateo, Lizbeth has helped many immigrants like herself apply for DACA, work permits, and to become legal permanent residents and citizens. She has also represented immigrants who are detained or living in sanctuary.

On the night of Robert F. Kennedy's assassination in 1968, a photographer caught an image of the presidential candidate just after he was shot. In it, a young hotel worker named Juan Romero cradles Kennedy's head, looking up, stunned. At the time, Romero was just 17-years old. That night, that photo, and everything that followed changed his life forever. Also: In Los Angeles, gentrification is affecting immigrant communities as once gritty downtown neighbourhoods become trendy places to live Activist and lawyer Lizbeth Mateo becomes the first unauthorised immigrant named to a statewide post in California; In Mexico City we visit a neighbourhood called ‘Little LA’; Finally, we take a tour through a score of Los Angeles’ of global ice cream shops. California is stepping closer to a civil war with the federal government over immigration. In the latest round, one day after President Trump visited the state to see prototypes of his border wall, the state senate appointed an illegal immigrant to serve on a state commission, a big step in California’s progressive history. Lizbeth Mateo, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, was appointed to the state’s Student Opportunity and Access Program Project Advisory Committee. Perhaps, as a lawyer who advocates for immigration rights, she would have a perspective to share as a witness before a state commission, but as a member? There’s no legal basis for that and it is a further effort by California to tweak the Trump administration. Unfortunately, the rule of law is rarely raised anymore in debates about immigration policy. Tweaking Trump is just a bad approach to public policy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

And they discuss the tragic assassination of Marielle Franco, a Rio de Janeiro councilwoman. Lizbeth Mateo and Luis Angel were both born in Mexico and brought to the US by their parents as children. They hustled like crazy in school, getting through college by washing dishes, working in a deli and grinding nonstop. They both also made it a point to keep going and pursued law school. Luis received his JD from NYU and Lizbeth hers from Santa Clara Law. To make these stories even more ridiculous, they were also both very actively involved in and leading the undocumented immigrant movement - pushing for the DREAM act and mobilizing to stop all the raids and deportations. They both put it on the line on many occasions. These two are special, and this episode is special. Please listen and share it with your friends and family. These are stories that need to be heard and this episode contains practical information that the community needs to know and be aware of given the potential impact of president-elect Trump's impending actions.PLEASE VISIT THESE LINKS FOR MORE INFORMATION:Petition to GRANT DACA to LIZBETH: http://www.notonemoredeportation.com/portfolio/lizbeth/Post Election DACA Talking Points: https://www.ilrc.org/daca-talking-pointsIMMIGRANT YOUTH COALITION: http://theiyc.org/ALTO TRUMP CAMPAIGN to protect ourselves and stop Trump: http://altotrump.com/NATIONAL DAY LABORER ORGANIZING NETWORK: http://www.ndlon.org/en/
