Left in two parts last week, as if hewn down the middle by a lightsaber, the Grapple limped to the close of January. Now, as February's moon enters Jupiter's orbit the Jedi Returns to make whole what was broken. Cricket remains front and centre in our heroes' cross hairs. Michael Bevan gets his due credit after being every 90's cricket kids hero, Pup's rein at the top is discussed, Smudger's 10K, and they talk about a fella called Don. (Heard of him?) Mentioning Don's, Luka Doncic's unceremonious exit from the Lone Star State to City Of Angels is discussed and put up against its "would be like" Rugby League equivalent. And of course not an ep can go by without the mention of Brad Clyde. The late 880's early 90's Raiders are delved into- oh what could have been. All of this and much much more.... in your home of all cool sports stuff. The one, the only ,The Grapple. Beware of other shitty sports podcasts. When the red moon a rises.... City of Angels is on trial. A match made in heaven or has hell frozen over? Gav defends this week, pointing to a rich story that doesn't tug on your heartstrings for the sake of it and sublime performances. The devil is the details for Alex however, as he struggles to get past Maggie's lack of basic cycle safety awareness. All this with an impression of Dennis Franz and a quiz all about songs commissioned especially for movies. www.filmsontrial.co.uk/264
The Glee club is heading to Nationals in L.A. Jenna and Kevin have so many memories of shooting this episode and were emotional after re-watching it. They talk about how they felt shooting the Finn tribute, their reaction to Burt and Carole's return, the many guest stars, Amber Riley bringing her Mirrorball Trophy to the set, why filming on the double-decker sightseeing bus was a nightmare, and a touching story about why their performance of "America" was so personal and relevant to Kevin. This episode, which features talk of our beloved city of Los Angeles, was recorded before the devastating wildfires. We want to thank the firefighters and first responders for their bravery and all those who have stepped up to help with their time and donations. iHeartRadio has partnered with The Dream Center to help those affected by the fires. The Bangkok Podcast | Conversations on Life in Thailand's Buzzing Capital
Greg interviews writer and filmmaker Greg Newman, a long-time expat in Thailand who recently made a documentary film about our beloved city of Bangkok. James starts out explaining his background in London as an insurance executive, his subsequent departure to Thailand, and his career as a writer during the e-book boom of the naughts. Around 2017 he transitioned to filmmaking and made a successful short film called ‘Crazy Medicine,' directed by friend of the podcast Richie Moore. But today's show centers on James' recent film, “Bangkok: City of Angels,” an attempt to capture the chaotic appeal of Bangkok in documentary form. James discusses his decision to cover a broad arc of Thai history, from a cholera outbreak 200 years ago to the more recent COVID pandemic, explaining that he wanted to show the ways in which history can appear to repeat itself and the ways that Thais overcome adversity. The two discuss the dozens of significant events in Thai history that have shaped Bangkok, from the founding of the city through to World War II and the Vietnam War. More recently, the film considers the 1997 financial crisis, the various political upheavals, up through the pandemic, during which the film was shot. While it may be impossible to capture the true essence of Bangkok in one film, “Bangkok: City of Angels” certainly is a serious effort in that direction. Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. We also sometimes post on Facebook, you can contact us on LINE and of course, head to our website (www.bangkokpodcast.com) to find out probably more info than you need to know.

"The Crow" remake starring Bill Skaarsgaard is on the horizon, so Gabe and Connor look at the last theatrical movie in the franchise: "The Crow: City of Angels." Forced to become an anthology series after the tragic loss of Brandon Lee, The Crow franchise flopped so hard with this second effort that the series went straight-to-video afterwards. That's largely thanks to meddling from everyone's favorite guy, Harvey Weinstein, who butchered the original vision by director Tim Pope and screenwriter David S. Goyer.Still, after the mediocore-to-spectacularly awful sequels that came afterwards, some fans appreciate this flick's style and consider it a worthy successor to the beloved original. So Gabe and Connor ask if COA was DOA, or if there's something to be salvaged in this strange concoction of BDSM, Nu Metal, and smog. For centuries, people who died destitute or alone were buried in potters' fields—a Dickensian end that even the most hard-pressed families tried to avoid. Today, more and more relatives are abandoning their dead, leaving it to local governments to dispose of the bodies. Up to 150,000 Americans now go unclaimed each year. Who are they? Why are they being forgotten? And what is the meaning of life if your death doesn't matter to others. The Unclaimed: Abandonment and Hope in the City of Angels (Crown, 2024) is an extraordinary work of narrative nonfiction that took Pamela J. Prickett and Stefan Timmermans eight years in the making to uncover this hidden social world. They follow four individuals in Los Angeles, tracing the twisting, poignant paths that put each at risk of going unclaimed, and introducing us to the scene investigators, notification officers, and crematorium workers who care for them when no one else will. The Unclaimed lays bare the difficult truth that anyone can be abandoned. It forces us to confront a variety of social ills, from the fracturing of families and the loneliness of cities to the toll of rising inequality. But it is also filled with unexpected moments of tenderness. In Boyle Heights, a Mexican American neighborhood not far from the glitter of Hollywood, hundreds of strangers come together each year to mourn the deaths of people they never knew. These ceremonies, springing up across the country, reaffirm our shared humanity and help mend our frayed social fabric. Beautifully crafted and profoundly empathetic, The Unclaimed urges us to expand our circle of caring—in death and in life. Michael O. Johnston, Ph.D. is a Assistant Professor of Sociology at William Penn University. He is the author of The Social Construction of a Cultural Spectacle: Floatzilla (Lexington Books, 2023) and Community Media Representations of Place and Identity at Tug Fest: Reconstructing the Mississippi River (Lexington Books, 2022). Pearl Jam is playing two shows in the City Of Angels this week, so once again we're back to cover another show from their history that they played in The Fabulous Forum. We're going back to 2006, the Avocado tour. A tour that we can kind of connect to what they are doing now with Dark Matter considering the high representation that you'll get each night from the album. This show in LA featured 10 of the 13 tracks while Dark Matter has consistently hovered around 8 of 11. We'll talk a little bit about the impact of the setlists thus far on this tour and where they intersect with Avocado. A great crowd show here (which is disappointing when you look at the ticket sales for both Forum shows for this week) and we'll get into how they made what could be considered a standard setlist to many feel exciting. The crowd came to participate on songs like Release, Corduroy, Even Flow, Small Town, Last Kiss and Alive, but also reacted well to the brand new songs. The highlights of this set that we'll get into come from Rearviewmirror, Crown Of Thorns, Gone, Big Wave and Inside Job, and we'll get to see an appearance from Tim Robbins joining in on a modern take of a song by folk musician Phil Ochs. Javier will join us to talk and teach about the Dumble amps that they've been using all tour, and he'll do a breakdown of Big Wave as well. Stay tuned as he'll join the show next week in preparation for Seattle! It's not a far stretch to say that 1994's The Crow is one of the best comic book movies of the 1990's and perhaps one of the best non-DC or Marvel comic book films of all time. So of course Hollywood wouldn't let this cinematic success go unpunished…and by that, we mean being dragged through the bad script swamp, weighed down and low budget and left to drown in studio notes. Still, we're going to try and prove to you that The Crow: City Of Angels is not that bad. www.notthatbadcast.com Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/notthatbadcast Social Media - @notthatbadcast (X, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, Spoutible) Learn more about your ad choices. During an incredible Broadway career that stretched from 1953 to 1998, composer Cy Coleman created the music for 12 Broadway musicals. Unlike most Broadway composers, however, he was never part of an ongoing songwriting team but instead worked with seven very talented but very different collaborators. My guest today is one of those esteemed lyricists -- David Zippel who partnered with Cy Coleman on the score for the 1990 Tony Award winning "Best Musical", City Of Angels the hit musical that altogether received 10 Tony Awards including Coleman and Zippel's win for Best Score. That show launched David on his own stellar career which has honored with two Academy Award nominations, two Grammy Award nominations, and three Golden Globe nominations. His songs can be heard on over twenty-five million CDs around the world that include recording by Stevie Wonder, Christina Aguilera, Mel Torme, Ricky Martin, Cleo Laine, Barbara Cook, Nancy LaMott, and include the Original Broadway Cast and Soundtrack recordings of The Goodbye Girl, The Women In White, The Swan Princess and Disney's Hercules and Disney's Mulan. David and I first met shortly after we had both arrived in NY in the early 1980's and have remained friends and colleagues ever since. Today we begin our conversation talking about Coleman's Russian-Jewish heritage. So many Broadway songwriters -- Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Harold Arlen, Leonard Bernstein to name just a few were the children or grandchildren of Russian-Jewish immigrants. We continue Romantic Movie Month with the surprisingly divisive (for us) CITY OF ANGELS! We talk about how the true star of the film is Dennis Franz, how Nicolas Cage's character is actually quite unsettling, and how being an angel seems mostly like being an agent from The Matrix franchise? This week on Mummy Dearest Podcast, Zach and Sloane unwrap 1998's romantic mystical fantasy film: City of Angels. This movie has it all: Nicolas Cage as an angel named Seth, Dennis Franz body surfing nude, dumpster babies, and a young Nick Offerman. It's a film that could not and would not be made in 2024. It's too wacky, too silly, and too heartfelt. Grab a pear, say a prayer and tune in to this week's episode of Mummy Dearest Podcast!
