A collaboration with What We Did Before on the deep history of music, from prehistoric instruments and ritual to place, technology and AI. A slightly different episode this time. Instead of the usual format, I'm sharing an interview I did for the excellent podcast What We Did Before. This particular episode, Before Music: Cave Rituals and Ancient Instruments | Steve Pretty explores where music may have come from, what it might have looked and sounded like before recorded history, and what those origins can still tell us now. We get into prehistoric conch shells and bone flutes, the role of ritual, why location and environment matter to how music develops, and how some of those ancient questions suddenly loop back round when you start thinking about AI-generated music. In other words: caves, culture, creativity, and the usual big weird human questions. I also mention a couple of live dates at the top of the episode. Ocean Songs is at East Point Pavilion in Lowestoft on Saturday 21st March, and the album launch is at Theatreship in London on Tuesday 24th March. My next live edition of Steve Pretty On the Origin of the Pieces is at Wilton's Music Hall on Tuesday 19th May, featuring Jim Bob. Send a textIn this episode of Your Future in Sales and Marketing, we sit down with Glen Scarlett, Commercial Director at Pernod Ricard Australia, to explore a career journey that proves there's no single path to success in sales and marketing.Growing up in Lowestoft, a small seaside town in England, Glen was certain from the age of 10 that he wanted to join the police force. But when his application was denied and he was told to go and gain “life experiences,” it set him on an entirely different trajectory. Rather than chasing a traditional career ladder, Glen chased experiences - leading him into hospitality, the liquor industry, and even teaching English as a foreign language in Sydney, followed by an extended stint in Cambodia. It wasn't until his 30s that Glen began his corporate career, joining Suntory as an account manager. Over six years, he built the commercial foundations that would eventually take him to Pernod Ricard, where he now leads at the highest level in Australia. In this conversation, Glen shares:Why chasing experiences can be more powerful than chasing titlesThe transferable skills hospitality builds for a sales careerHow starting “later” can actually be a competitive advantageWhat it really takes to move from account management to commercial leadershipAdvice for anyone unsure about their next career moveThis episode is a must-listen for aspiring sales and marketing professionals who feel pressure to have it all figured out. Glen's story is a powerful reminder that diverse experiences, resilience, and curiosity can be your greatest career assets.

https://thecommunists.org/2025/08/10/leaflets/whatever-happened-to-lowestoft/ No town anywhere should be left to rot by an uncaring and arrogant ruling class. When our whole future is at stake, it's time to take action. The truth that the ruling class doesn't want us to understand is that we have both the ability and the power to do without capitalist exploiters. In a world where such mighty productive capacities exist, there is no excuse for poverty or deprivation in any corner of the planet – and certainly not in England, home of the world's first industrial revolution. As MPs returned to Westminster after the summer recess, this week we're looking ahead to a crucial autumn for this government, packed full of potential pitfalls as they hope year two in office is an upgrade from a tricky first 12 months. But after a clunky internal Downing Street reset and distracting revelations about Angela Rayner's tax affairs, things have not got off to the best start, with a high-risk Donald Trump visit, party conference season, the ongoing smalls boats crisis and Rachel Reeve' sophomore Budget to deliver, things don't get any easier for Keir Starmer and his team in the coming weeks.Joining host Alain Tolhurst to discuss how Labour navigates its way through all of this are two of the party's MPs; Antonia Bance, the member for Tipton and Wednesbury, and Jess Asato, the MP for Lowestoft.Alongside them are Chris Hopkins, Political Research Director at the pollsters Savanta, along with Adam Payne, editor of PoliticsHome. To sign up for our newsletters click herePresented by Alain Tolhurst, produced by Nick Hilton and edited by Ewan Cameron for Podot

Roll-up! Roll-up! The Banksy circus is coming to town... What happens when Banksy does one of his naughty drawings on the wall of your house? For Season 2 of The Banksy Story, super-fan James Peak investigates (even though he isn't an art critic, or a journalist). In this episode, James visits Sam in Margate and Gert in Lowestoft. They have both been visited by Britain's favourite quality vandal. Banksy left freshly painted artworks on their properties overnight, like some kind of spray-can Santa Claus. For Season 2 of The Banksy Story, super-fan James Peak investigates (even though he isn't an art critic, or a journalist). In this episode, Gert in Lowestoft must deal with crowds, chancers and the Council after Banksy left a painting of a massive seagull on her end-of-terrace. And in Margate, Sam and Julian must react quickly if they are to stop Valentine's Day Mascara being spirited away by light-fingered opportunists and the Council's refuse department.Written, Produced & Presented by James Peak Voices: Keith Wickham & Harriet Carmichael Production Support: George Crowe Music: Alcatraz Swim Team & Lilium Street Art Consultancy and Investigative Support: Steph Warren Series Mixing: Neil Churchill Executive Producer: Philip Abrams Commissioner: Dan Clarke With special thanks to Hadrian Briggs, Pete Chinn, Rob Shiret, Rosie Bauer, Tracy Williams, Andy Voss & Noel LewisAn Essential Radio production for BBC Radio 4

It's October already so it's time for Graham to return for our traditional Halloween period of exploring killer critter features and, from time to time, discovering new author rabbit holes to tumble down. This time, it's PISCES RISING by NEL stalwart Peter Cave and his one-time collaborator Margaret Wredden. Fantastic creation myths combine with brutal deaths, drinking bitter in a pub in Lowestoft, and a sadly underfeatured octopus called Bluey. JOIN US!!!
Three league games, three clean sheets, three wins and top of the EFL Championship table! Regis Le Bris becomes the first manager in our history to achieve this and it's delightful, fucking delightful. What's le crack? ROMAINE MUNDLE; Upon stepping into the still flaming shoes of the outgoing Jack Clarke he only went and won the game for us didn't he. Unbelievable Jeff. TOP OF THE LEAGUE; Aye we're only three games in we know but that's a historic run for Sunderland AFC and everything is falling into place for RLB. Rigged again; Can you drop Chris Rigg at this point? Another brilliant performance from our young midfield, but a bit of déjà vu for our Dan Neil as he was sent off after a second yellow with 5 minutes to go. Anthony Patterson hasn't had anything to do for weeks so what is he doing to entertain himself whilst Hume, Alese, O'Nien and Cirkin form a practically impenetrable wall around him; as far as we can tell it is the first time in our history that we have won three without conceding so aye. Impressive work lads. Alexandre Mendy has been spotted swimming up the east coast of England but may have run into trouble through the night around Lowestoft, drones have been sent to look for Sunlun's number one fan; Jack Clarke's departure announced by Sunderland and Ipswich as well as more talk of incomings at the club and a few of your questions. All this and more! Ha'way the Lads! #EFL #EFLChampionship #SAFC Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
