This week, Hannah and Sam are just back from the New England Crime Bake, where crime-fiction authors gather, along with murder consultants and the like — don't miss people like Elly Griffiths, Deborah Crombie (the new one was "A Killing of Innocents"), and Chris Fabricant, who calls into question the way prosecutors use evidence in "Junk Science." Then we move into Hannah's love for "The Unmaking of June Farrow," by Adrienne Young, which has strong "Time Traveler's Wife" vibes, with time travel, romance, and mystery. Don't worry: It's not like "The Girl on the Train." Sam isn't quite as enamored with the new Paul Auster book, "Baumgartner," and is mildly troubled by the fact he's read three books this year, now, that feature 70-year-old men having sex. Sam says it's like "Wonder Boys" without any weed (Auster's book about a man whose sons and wife have died is "Book of Illusions," FYI). On the other hand, Hannah also loves "Down Here We Come Up," Sara Johnson Allen's debut novel, and not just because Sara lives in Ipswich. You can tell, in a good way, that Sara worked on the book for 15 years, a story of con artists and heart. Unfortunately, Sam follows with a couple books he just couldn't finish. Meh. Lessons learned. Not for him. Luckily, Hannah rescues the vibe with "Hotel Nantucket," her Elin Hilderbrand dive in preparation for our big event (it's not much like "Hotel New Hampshire," though), and Sam does like the new John Prine book (don't know who John Prine is? Ho boy, you're in luck). We're all over the map this week, folks, but next week we're doing a "gift-giving" thing, so stay tuned.
This week the Sam's open with Leicester City losing their second on the bump, while Ipswich and Leeds gain ground. In League 1 Pompey continue their unbeaten run at the top, Wigan seems to be getting past the points deduction and Reading is sinking further and further at the bottom of the table. In League 2 Mansfield continues their unbeaten ways even though they sit in 3rd, and Wrexham win again and now find themselves in 2nd place.

QNEWS -NOVEMBER 12 2023 - VK4 ON AIR ------------ DID YOUR CLUB TELL ANYONE ABOUT AMATEUR RADIO THIS WEEK? IPSWICH AND DISTRICT AR CLUB DID. As this bulletin goes to air in most locations on Sunday morning, Ipswich WICEN group is again providing safety communications to runners taking part in the rescheduled Mount Glorious Trail event. Following this event Ipswich WICEN will take a break until the next event next year being the Mount Glorious Trail on April 28, 2024. We might have set a record for approving new memberships at the club's October business meeting. A total of five were endorsed as new members. Welcome to the club, Paul VK4PMC, Brett VK4DSN, Alan VK4AJG, Mike VK4MAQ and Christopher VK4CAP. John VK4MUD will open the clubhouse on Saturday November 18 at 1400 hours for anyone who would be interested in using and working the club's HF transceiver and beam, and possibly working some local stations and DX stations as well. If you're new to amateur radio, call in and see what you can work. In other news from Ipswich – the Christmas BBQ will again be held at Kholo Gardens picnic area from 10 am on November 25. Members, friends and visiting amateurs are very welcome to attend. BBQs are available and it's BYO food, drinks and chairs. Reporting from Ipswich this is Allan, VK4HIT. Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. To re-use the old TV program title, well “That Was The Week That Was”. If you want to upset many amateurs you turn off the bands and when the CME-induced flare hit the HF Bands were placed in recess. I wonder how many of us have considered the benefits of incentives. I mean not only the awards, and contest places for those who are fondly known as paper hangers but to the average amateur whose interests lie in other areas of this wide cluster of pursuits. I know that we have a series of awards given out by the WIA but what about local recognition and providing an information stream to encourage people? At times I think we can be too parochial and restrictive in what is made available to people and we need to recognise that there are many more amateur radio operators than there are club members or members of the WIA. It is well and good to provide ways for club members to get recognition within the club and even to read the honours lists and be able to say, “Hey, she's one of us, she's a ham” when we see they have been gonged. However is there a way that we can do this and include all the local amateur cohort in the recognition? I think that being able to nominate others for recognition is important and being able to share with the community is of great benefit to our hobby as well. When it is within the boundary of a small organisation it may be less effective if the majority aren't embraced in the scheme. Should we be able to set up a way of recognising people and potentially put their achievements out to the local media, even get pictures of them receiving a token such as a plaque or a certificate which can feature in the local media and perhaps Amateur Radio magazine? Now I am not suggesting that this replace any methods of recognition that clubs give their members but can we do this as well? Many things can provide a sense of camaraderie and maybe a presentation of the Golden Sausage to the member who felt best supported the sausage sizzle fundraising is as worthy of praise as a President's award and maybe it would get more involvement in social activities amongst members. What I am trying to do is encourage the brainstorming that suits people locally and encourages participation in more facets of amateur radio. I think that is a good thing…. How about you? I'm Geoff Emery VK4ZPP

Aaron Paul and Jobi McAnuff are joined by Phil Brown to talk about Ipswich's fine start to the season, after losing just once in the Championship and knocking Wolves out of the EFL Cup to reach Round Four. They also look at Cheltenham Town's struggles with the League One side yet to score a goal and looking for a new manager. And we hear from James Schooley of the Shrimpers Trust, ahead of potentially a key week in the future of Southend United. 01:32 EFL Cup and the 4th round draw 04:52 Ipswich Town's excellent start to the season 17:20 Goalless Cheltenham 25:16 The future of Southend United 38:13 Troubling times for Scunthorpe United
Leicester and Ipswich are cursing at the top of the championship as Leeds gets their 3rd shutout in a row to move up the table. Manchester United got back to winning ways in the Carabao Cup, in a game that became quite gory for Crystal Palace, and that was before debutant Dan Gore received his Old Trafford debut from Erik ten Hag. Are United back or is this another stop-and-star period for the Red Devils? Is was also another disappointing night for Wolves as they were dumped out of the cup by Ipswich, so just how much time does Gary O'Neill have left to get it right? And reigning Champion Joel has his crown contested by Marley as Niall delivers a Google-inspired quiz! After the horror show that was Leicester, we had the chance to bounce back 4 days later against Ipswich - but that didn't quite go to plan. You'd think a trip to bottom-of-the-table Middlesbrough would have been the perfect opportunity to turn the poor run-of-form around… but this is Southampton. The games don't get any easier with Leeds coming to St Mary's this week. In the podcast this week, we preview the two games that took place in the last 7 days, discuss the upcoming fixture against Leeds, break down the best midfield we can hope for and discuss the poor atmosphere heard in recent matches. Not quite the bleak listen you'd expect, it's light and fun and hopefully provides you with the Saints therapy you might need on a Monday morning.Welcome to TSP 244!Martin Starke is joined by Steve Grant (SaintsWeb), Glen de la Cour (League One Minus 10), and Alfie House (Daily Echo) to get you up to date on all things SaintsFC. What a weekend! Matt Davies-Adams, Adrian Clarke and Sam Parkin are back to discuss the latest round of excellent EFL action. Ipswich and Blackburn play out a 4-3 thriller, Plymouth pulverise Norwich and Middlesbrough are finally off and running in the Championship. In League One, it's very much odds against Cheltenham scoring at the moment but Michael Appleton's positive start at Charlton continues. In League Two, Notts County go top whilst Wrexham get thumped at Stockport. There are two top class scouting reports and a tweet of the week to enjoy as well.
