Eclectic jazz performer coming to Cold Spring Modest but accomplished actor and musician Nellie McKay is reticent when asked to discuss her work and style. She's more animated on political passions, like feminism and animal rights, and more talkative onstage. McKay (pronounced "McKye"), who will perform a sold-out show on June 6 at the Chapel Restoration in Cold Spring for its Jazz at the Chapel series, is comfortable enough there to reveal many personal details, like the story about why she mispronounced her guitarist's name after a 2011 appearance at NPR's Tiny Desk: "I was stoned when I met him." Three years ago, while a guest on a radio show in North Carolina, her face brightened when she heard that Sierra Nevada sponsored the segment. "Brought to you by a beer? I love that; it's about time." The host replied, "It's that time sometime" — i.e., 5 o'clock somewhere. Responding with a coy smile, she said, "All the time." The show is broadcast from the campus of Isothermal Community College in the state's Appalachian west: "I feel like I'm going to school again; I want to get some supplies," she said, not in reference to textbooks or pens. Then she launched into "The Drinking Song," a melancholy number about drowning sorrows after the death of a loved one, vowing to "drink, drink, drink" and "dream, dream, dream" when sleeping off the binge. McKay's musical knowledge is vast. She's hip to the Hawaiian music craze that brought the ukulele to the mainland in the 1920s and 1930s. As a pianist, she recorded a tribute album to music, movie and television icon Doris Day, who broke out in the mid-1940s and promoted animal rights. When the topic of World War I came up in conversation, McKay immediately referenced Death of the Liberal Class, by Chris Hedges, which focuses on the Committee on Public Information, a federal agency that created and spread propaganda. "That's where the war economy and the misinformation in the mass media started," she says. "I have to be political — we're such pawns." To escape, she tries to avoid the noise. "It's so good to unplug," she says. "Silence is my favorite music, but it can be hard to find." McKay is a seasoned actor and writer of themed musicals that cover obscure historical figures, like Barbara Graham, the third woman in California to die in a gas chamber (at San Quentin). She also encapsulates the life of Billy Tipton (born Dorothy) in a "Girl Named Bill," a play on Johnny Cash's biggest hit, "A Boy Named Sue." Tipton, who kicked off a career as a jazz pianist and bandleader in the 1930s, passed as a man for her entire life. Paramedics who responded to her death in 1989 discovered the truth. McKay lives on the road, with no fixed address. "Sometimes venues put me up, but I just travel," she says. "I'm a trucker." The Chapel Restoration is located at 45 Market St. in Cold Spring. McKay's performance, which begins at 7 p.m., is sold out, but tickets may be available at the door. To download music, see nelliemckay.com.

Chuck Todd delivers a sweeping analysis of how the Iran war is metastasizing into an economic, military, and constitutional crisis all at once — warning that the Strait of Hormuz, the most important waterway in the world through which roughly a fifth of global oil supply flows, is Iran's ultimate point of leverage and one Trump catastrophically failed to account for. He argues that Trump mistakenly assumed the Iranian regime would be as transactional as he is and would capitulate the way Venezuela did, but Iran has no intention of walking away from its ability to make the strait dangerous to navigate — which is all it takes to send energy markets into chaos, threaten the tourism and banking economies of Gulf states, and risk the economic collapse of nuclear-armed Pakistan through energy shortages. He calls Pete Hegseth a "Baghdad Bob"-style propagandist presiding over the administration's grotesque "memeification" of war, then turns to what he calls FCC Chairman Brendan Carr's declaration of war on press freedom — Carr threatened Saturday to revoke broadcast licenses over Iran war coverage the administration deems unfavorable, drawing immediate condemnation from Democrats, free speech groups, and even some Republicans who called it "authoritarian" and "unconstitutional." Chuck warns that while courts will likely block Carr's most extreme threats, the mere act of launching investigations creates a chilling effect not dissimilar to how broadcasting works in Russia. He closes by acknowledging that the Iranian regime needs to go, but that Trump's disastrous decision to lift oil sanctions on Russia has only strengthened Moscow's position, and that the war has dramatically increased the likelihood of terrorist attacks against Americans Then, Faiz Shakir — Bernie Sanders' 2020 campaign manager, former DNC chair candidate, and executive director of the progressive media organization More Perfect Union — joins the Chuck Toddcast for a bracingly honest conversation about what's wrong with the Democratic Party and what it would take to fix it. Shakir diagnoses a party that is functionally leaderless, with its top figures stuck in a "play dead" mentality while the Democratic brand polls worse than the Republican brand even as Trump's corruption grows more brazen by the day. He argues that Trump — like Biden before him — is finger-wagging at voters on the economy rather than addressing affordability, and that Democrats are blowing the opportunity to capitalize because they're terrible at picking fights and allergic to friction. Shakir is particularly scathing on the party's relationship with big tech and corporate power: He holds up Bernie Sanders' AI data center moratorium as the kind of fight Democrats should be waging, and Lina Khan's FTC tenure as the model of mission-driven disruption. The conversation then turns to the future of the party and how to build a lasting majority. Shakir argues that the right candidate could move 7% of the electorate from right to left, that if Sanders were younger he'd likely win in 2028, and that Sanders has more credibility than AOC because he represents a rural state — though he praises both AOC's national appeal and Ro Khanna's political intelligence. He insists Democrats need to fight a class-based economic justice campaign, stop punishing candidates who aren't perfectly aligned on social issues, and recognize that "independent" doesn't mean centrist — younger voters are disillusioned with both parties and hungry for a working-class-first agenda. Shakir offers a detailed vision for DNC reform: fund state parties based on merit and metrics, move Nevada to first on the primary calendar because Vegas politics would orient the party toward working-class concerns, add Michigan and North Carolina to the early window, and invest in sun belt opportunities He closes by noting that James Talarico channeled Bernie's message with a religious-based framing, and that Democratic voters always gravitate toward outsiders — the party just needs to let them run. Finally, Chuck hops into the ToddCast Time Machine to revisit the creation of standardized time, answers listeners’ questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment, and gives his advice for building your NCAA tournament bracket. He closes by acknowledging that the Iranian regime needs to go, but that Trump's disastrous decision to lift oil sanctions on Russia has only strengthened Moscow's position, and that the war has dramatically increased the likelihood of terrorist attacks against Americans Finally, Chuck hops into the ToddCast Time Machine to revisit the creation of standardized time, answers listeners’ questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment, and gives his advice for building your NCAA tournament bracket. In this conversation from Austin, Jim Cassidy, Lane Tipton, and Camden Bucey reflect on the abiding value of the Westminster Shorter Catechism as a tool for cultivating a God-centered, covenantally rich, and confessionally rooted Christian life. The discussion highlights Jim's new book, Introducing the Faith: A Study of the Westminster Shorter Catechism, which serves as a written complement to his two free Reformed Academy courses through which he teaches the Shorter Catechism (Questions 1–38 and Questions 39–106). Together, the hosts trace their own histories with the Standards, demonstrating how catechesis shapes believers in the chief end of man—to glorify and enjoy God forever. They also explore how the catechism's covenant theology anchors the church in biblical teaching, safeguarding the glory of God amid contemporary pressures. The discussion turns to the weighty task of confessional subscription—its history, responsibilities, and the risks of revision. With pastoral clarity and historical attentiveness, the hosts encourage churches and teachers to handle their confessions with both gratitude and vigilance. The episode concludes with a look at the ongoing mission of Reformed Academy and the resources being developed to strengthen the church in catechesis and confessional fidelity. In this conversation with defense attorney Bob Motta, we dig into the strange forensic angle the defense is clinging to: the fact that investigators found no biological evidence in the bedroom where Brian claims Ana died naturally. Crime lab specialist Matthew Sheehan testified that blood was found everywhere it should be if a body was moved and dismembered: the hacksaw, the hammer, the hatchet, the basement floor, the towels, the carpet fragments. Meanwhile, the bedroom — the place where the defense insists Ana died peacefully — was spotless. Bob helps us unpack whether that's actually good for the defense… or whether it just reinforces the prosecution's timeline. Because a clean bedroom might sound helpful until you remember bleach destroys DNA — and that the basement is telling a very different story. We explore Tipton's tactical choices: pushing Sheehan to confirm “no evidence in the bedroom,” highlighting the investigators entering without protective gear, and pointing to oddities like the undisturbed insulation around a ceiling hole. Bob breaks down whether these are meaningful cracks or tiny fishing holes in a case that's already drowning in physical evidence. And then there's the jury. Bob walks us through how jurors typically interpret “absence of evidence” arguments: do they hear reasonable doubt, or do they hear a lawyer trying to redirect their attention away from the bloody basement? This is the chess match inside the trial — a defense building a narrative around what isn't there while the prosecution points repeatedly to what is. #BrianWalshe #AnaWalshe #BobMotta #TrueCrimeAnalysis #HiddenKillers #CleanBedroomDefense #ForensicEvidence #CourtroomStrategy Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Day 5 of the Brian Walshe murder trial delivered some of the most disturbing testimony yet — text messages prosecutors say Brian sent to his wife Ana's phone for three days after allegedly killing and dismembering her. Massachusetts State Trooper Connor Keefe read the messages aloud in Norfolk Superior Court. They show Brian Walshe's tone shifting from casual to concerned to frantic between January 2nd and January 4th, 2023 — the day he finally reported Ana missing. One text ended with "I still love you!!! haha." According to prosecutors, Ana was already dead when he typed those words. None of the messages were ever delivered. Her phone was never recovered. The jury also saw the tools prosecutors say Brian used to dismember his wife's body. Retired Trooper Heather Sullivan removed each item from evidence bags and displayed them in open court: a hatchet, hacksaw, hammer, garden shears, snippers, packing tape, and a measuring cup. All recovered from a dumpster near Brian's mother's Swampscott apartment. Defense attorney Larry Tipton pushed back hard during cross-examination, arguing investigators cherry-picked evidence from a narrow two-week window and ignored context that showed a normal marriage. He highlighted texts from December 2022 where Brian and Ana discussed buying property and shopping for a Porsche. Tipton also invoked the name Michael Proctor — the disgraced state trooper from the Karen Read case who was the original case officer on Ana Walshe's disappearance. State Medical Examiner Richard Atkinson began testimony about examining items from the trash for human tissue. He returns Monday with findings. Brian Walshe has pleaded guilty to misleading police and improperly disposing of Ana's body — but the jury doesn't know that. He's fighting the first-degree murder charge. The defense claims he found Ana dead and panicked. Prosecutors say he planned and executed her killing, then performed the role of worried husband while disposing of evidence. Trial resumes Monday. In this episode of Christ the Center, Camden Bucey and Lane Tipton explore Geerhardus Vos's profound treatment of faith in the Gospel of John (pp. 390–392 of Biblical Theology). Vos unfolds faith not as an abstract belief but as a living, continuous union with the incarnate and ascended Truth—Jesus Christ Himself. John's theology binds faith and truth together: the Son comes down from heaven as the true light, true bread, true vine, and the Truth (John 1:9; 6:32; 15:1; 14:6). Faith, therefore, is a Spirit-wrought communion with the heavenly reality revealed in Him. Tipton and Bucey trace how this Johannine vision lifts believers from the shadowy worship of the old covenant to true, eschatological worship "in spirit and in truth." Faith beholds Christ even now, anticipating the beatific vision. In contrast to philosophical or impersonal notions of truth, Vos insists that truth is personal, Trinitarian, and heavenly—rooted in the self-revealing God. Thus, saving faith is not blind trust but an intimate, knowing participation in the life of the risen Christ, a foretaste of the age to come. Dr. Lane Tipton speaks at the Reformed Forum Annual Theology Conference, held at Lakeland Church in Gurnee, Illinois on September 27, 2025. Dr. Tipton presents Jesus Christ as the "mountain ascending mediator" and the promised seed of the woman from Genesis 3:15. Dr. Tipton argues that God's plan for redemption is framed by the concept of a holy mountain dwelling, beginning with heaven itself and its earthly counterpart, the Garden of Eden. After Adam's fall and subsequent exile from the holy mountain, God announced the first promise of the gospel—that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent's head. This salvific ascent was foreshadowed throughout the Old Testament on key mountains (Ararat, Sinai, Moriah, and Zion), all pointing to the final ascent of Christ. Through his sacrifice, Christ successfully ascended to the heavenly mountain, providing covering for sin, overcoming the devil, and bringing his people to see God in perfected worship and everlasting beatitude. Ronald Exantus killed 6-year-old Logan Tipton while the child slept in his own bed. Not because a parole board found him rehabilitated. But because of a broken system that rewards “good behavior” in prison with early release credits — and a Kentucky law called Mandatory Reentry Supervision that forces early release, even when the parole board says no. In this episode, Tony Brueski breaks down how the man who confessed to the killing was found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity on the murder charge, convicted on assault counts, sentenced to 20 years — and still walked out of prison after just a few short years. In this installment of the Vos Group, Camden Bucey and Lane Tipton continue their deep dive into Geerhardus Vos's Biblical Theology: Old and New Testaments. Together they explore Vos's treatment of the essence of the kingdom of God (pp. 385–387), drawing connections to his “Doctrine of the Covenant in Reformed Theology.” This conversation highlights Vos's thoroughly theocentric vision—where creation, redemption, and faith all center upon the glory of God. Dr. Tipton unpacks how this framework distinguishes Reformed theology from other traditions, and how the kingdom manifests historically through the power of the Holy Spirit. The discussion further shows how Vos integrates covenant, kingdom, and eschatology, pointing us to our inheritance in Christ and the glory of God as our ultimate portion. Whether you are a pastor, student, or thoughtful layperson, this episode will help you see more clearly how Vos unites themes of covenant and kingdom in a way that sharpens our understanding of Christ and strengthens our hope in his coming reign.
