National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company rolling out the National Broadband Plan (NBP) has today (Wednesday) hosted an event on Achill Island to mark the first connections to high-speed fibre broadband on the remote island Main build works on the island infrastructure are now complete enabling over 2,500 homes, farms and businesses to high-speed broadband. This means that residents of Ireland's largest island will have the same access to 2 Gig, reliable, broadband as any of the over 380,000 premises that NBI has already passed across the country. Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan, T.D., was present at the event which included local public representatives, community groups and residents from the island. Minister O'Donovan said: "The National Broadband Plan is one of the largest State infrastructure projects since rural electrification, and ensures that no community, home or business is left behind from a connectivity point of view. This means that delivering broadband infrastructure to the residents of Achill Island is a natural extension of this mandate. "I'm delighted to be here today to witness first-hand the impact that this investment and connectivity to high-speed broadband is having for homes, businesses and the entire island community who will reap the benefits of it for decades to come." David McCourt, Founder and Chairman of National Broadband Ireland, commented: "At NBI, we are working to the mandate from Government to ensure that no town, village, or community will be left behind under the National Broadband Plan. No premises is too rural or too remote and we're proud to be here on Achill Island - one of 27 offshore islands in our rollout - to mark the availability of our world-class fibre network." TJ Malone, Chief Executive Officer, National Broadband Ireland, said: "The delivery of fibre broadband infrastructure to Achill Island is a significant milestone for NBI, and we are delighted to have end customers already connected and enjoying the benefits of reliable, high-speed broadband. This is a major step forward for digital connectivity, helping people stay connected, work remotely, stream seamlessly, and access vital online services. "Fibre broadband is the gold standard for fast, reliable internet - and thanks to the National Broadband Plan, many homes and businesses across Ireland can already make the switch today. By switching to fibre, users can leave behind the limitations of outdated copper networks, which were never designed to meet the demands of today's digital world." Local connected customer and owner of House of Achill, Anna Sutcliffe, said: "Since connecting to the NBI Network with Imagine, my business has really grown. Traditionally on the island, we are very dependent on the tourism season. Now with fibre, I finally have a fast, reliable connection to support online sales and ensure customer service year-round. I can now focus on what I enjoy most about the business: being creative." Glenda Brady, Commercial Director, Imagine, said:"At Imagine, our roots have always been in rural Ireland and in serving communities like Achill. This is a moment we're really proud of. Fibre connectivity will allow business owners, like Anna, succeed in a much bigger digitally connected market, no matter where they are based." Local connected customer and owner of Lilí Bán Café, John Barrett, said: "I opened Lilí Bán Café in the summer of 2021 and soon realised that running a business on Achill Island has its challenges. Without fibre broadband, the weather often impacted the signal and reliability of the connection. Since connecting to NBI's fibre with Westnet, it's been a real game changer. At the café, we can now manage online bookings and operate a card machine. It's exciting to see a new wave of business starting on the island and fibre connectivity has definitely played a big part in this." Paul Cunnane, Chief Executive Officer, Westnet, said: "Westnet has a long-standing...

Planning your holidays or busy packing your bags? Be aware that scammers are also busy planning to trick you out of your hard-earned cash. From fake websites to dodgy deals, here's how to spot and avoid common holiday ripoffs. Watch out for copycat travel firms The internet is rife with copycat airlines and bogus holiday firms. These fraudsters create cloned websites that mimic official logos and branding, making them look like the real deal. Travel tip: Always check that the URL and logo match the official website exactly. Verify contact details, and if something feels off, trust your gut. While the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) sign should protect your holiday, scammers can use fake licence numbers. If in doubt, visit IAA.ie to verify the company. Beware of fake tours and activities Imagine paying for an action-packed tour or exciting excursion only to find it doesn't exist. Scam operators often advertise or tout non-existent activities or trips. Travel tip: Before paying, check out verified reviews from other travellers. Be wary of red flags like poorly spelt ads, blurry images, or "limited-time offers." Never feel pressured to make an on-the-spot decision if you're approached on the street. Take their details, research, and only commit when you're ready. Don't fall under the influence Your social media feeds - Facebook, X, TikTok, and Instagram - are prime hunting grounds for scammers to lure sunseekers. Slick ads can spoof airlines or hotels, enticing you with quick and easy getaways that are simply too good to be true. You might even receive fake confirmation emails or booking references. Travel tip: Always check the authenticity of the profile promoting the deal and don't get drawn in by sham influencers. The golden rule is to book flights and hotels directly through the official websites. Only part with your money once you're 100% sure it's legit. Don't be duped by bogus government websites Despite warnings, counterfeit websites designed to mimic government bodies continue to trick consumers into paying hefty service fees for things like renewing passports or obtaining free EHIC cards. Travel tip: Double-check that it's an official government website before entering personal details or payment information, and be on the lookout for last-minute hidden costs. Legitimate government services are upfront about their fees. Avoid airport parking rouges Airport parking can significantly increase holiday costs, making cheap deals very tempting. But beware, some airport parking rogues promise to keep your car safe and secure, when the reality can be quite different. You may even return home to find your car damaged, dirty, or with added mileage. Travel tip: Research thoroughly and book well in advance with a reputable parking firm. Read and verify recent reviews from other customers to ensure your car will be in safe hands while you're away. Guard against car hire scams Hiring a car or scooter online or abroad offers freedom, but it also paves the way for fraudsters. You could end up paying for damage you didn't cause or extras you didn't need. Travel tip: Before signing any documents or driving away, scour the paperwork and take photos of the vehicle from all angles, noting any existing scratches or damage. Consider purchasing cheaper car hire excess cover from a separate insurer before you travel - it can save you a huge amount if something goes wrong. Eoin Clarke, Commercial Director at Switcher.ie comments: "By staying vigilant and following these tips, you can outsmart the scammers and ensure your well-deserved holiday is filled with happy memories, not financial headaches. Sadly, fraudsters are all too ready to take advantage of sun-seekers, who become easy targets for scams and ripoffs, especially once they relax and let their guard down. Before you spend money on your holidays, thoroughly research travel websites, tour operators, and parking firms. Read company reviews and scrutinise the small print to avoid being du...

The National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) has published its 2024 Year in Review, highlighting a transformative year of progress in areas critical to Ireland's future, including housing innovation, digital resilience, and sustainability. In a year of global uncertainty and rapid advances in areas like cybersecurity, NSAI played a pivotal role in supporting business competitiveness and advancing Ireland's strategic ambitions under Housing for All, the Climate Action Plan, and the Digital Europe Programme. Minister of State with responsibility for Employment, Small Business and Retail, Alan Dillon TD said: "The NSAI plays a vital role in strengthening Ireland's business ecosystem. From enabling housing innovation through Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) to advancing cybersecurity and sustainability, NSAI's Year in Review displays how the organisation supports our industries to grow safely, smartly, and compete internationally. The Year in Review reflects the important role NSAI plays in supporting Irish businesses and setting and maintaining world-class standards, measurement services and certification systems." In 2024, NSAI advanced key pillars of its Strategic Plan 2022-2026 in the areas of housing, digital transformation, climate and MedTech through standards, metrology and certification that directly support Ireland's Programme for Government and economic growth. Geraldine Larkin, NSAI CEO, said: "NSAI is committed to supporting businesses to enable growth, competitiveness and long-term success. We're proud to act as a bridge between innovation and assurance, empowering Irish businesses of all sizes to operate with confidence, integrity, and international credibility. Whether it's bringing a new MMC housing system to market or achieving ISO certification in information security, we ensure companies can move faster, meet expectations, and lead by example." Key highlights from the report include: Supporting housing innovation: With 80 new MMC enquiries and 48 new applications received in 2024, NSAI's MMC department is supporting faster, safer and more efficient construction outcomes. NSAI's Sustainability and Built Environment department approved 1,132 construction products last year and NSAI established a dedicated Building Information Modelling department before Christmas. Agrément certification is specifically aimed at products or systems that are new or innovative. The KORE group in Cavan, for example, achieved MMC Agrément certification through NSAI for its insulated concrete formwork system and its insulated foundation system. Caroline Ashe Brady, Commercial Director with the Kore Group said: "NSAI's rigorous assessment process has been crucial in enabling us to bring next-generation construction solutions to market with confidence. MMC Agrément certification helps manufacturers in the construction industry, like ours, to meet both compliance requirements and sustainability goals." Cybersecurity at the forefront: In September 2024, NSAI was appointed lead co-ordinator for the EU TrustBoost programme, aimed at strengthening cybersecurity certification across the EU. With threats to data privacy and digital infrastructure on the rise, this initiative under the Digital Europe Programme is helping to develop new technologies and tools to create a more secure digital ecosystem for Europe. Separately, NSAI developed a new certification readiness tool for Irish SMEs around information security. Innovation and excellence through standards: As Ireland prepares to take over the presidency of the Council of the EU in July 2026, NSAI continues to take a leading on the role of standards in support of the single market. This is a vital role at national and European level. In 2024: 1,467 standards were published 286,209 standards were accessed 200 new members joined technical committees (there are now over 2,400 national committee members) Precise measuring for trade: NSAI's Nati...

Japan's Top Business Interviews Podcast By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
“Leadership is building a strong team that can execute with resilience and deliver consistent results over time.” “There's no easy way—other than talking to people—to truly know what's happening in your organization.” “You need a balance of patience and impatience to create belief and drive change in Japan.” “If you say the customer comes first, then the customer has to come first—every day of the week.” “Engagement isn't just passion—it's also connection and commitment, and each needs different actions.” Kohei graduated from Princeton University in 2011 with a major in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and a minor in Global Health. Following his graduation, he joined Bain & Company in Tokyo, where he worked as a management consultant from 2011 to 2015. In 2015, Kohei became one of the founding members of AB InBev Japan as the company transitioned from a distributor-based model to direct market operations. He initially joined as a Brand Manager and quickly rose through the ranks. From 2016 to 2018, he served as Head of Marketing and Trade Marketing. He then spent two years (2018–2020) in China with AB InBev, leading premium brand trade marketing efforts. Returning to Japan in 2020, he took on the role of Head of ZEDx Ventures, focusing on the company's growth portfolio and e-commerce. In 2021, he became Commercial Director, managing nationwide sales and trade marketing teams. He was appointed Country Director in 2022, and now leads a team of approximately 70 employees. Kohei's leadership philosophy is rooted in purpose-driven engagement, cultural adaptability, and a structured yet human-centered approach to management. He began his leadership journey at AB InBev Japan by helping to build the organization from the ground up. Early on, he transitioned from being an individual contributor to a team leader, gradually scaling his responsibilities from three direct reports to overseeing a seventy-person organization. This evolution shaped his views on how leadership needs to shift as organizations grow—not only managing direct reports but also leading through multiple layers and ensuring alignment across the entire structure. Kohei sees leadership as a blend of strategic clarity, consistent communication, and empowering people at every level. He stresses the importance of face-to-face engagement and building trust through transparency, especially in a Japanese context where emotional connection, loyalty, and social harmony are essential. His approach involves structured frameworks around engagement—specifically passion, connection, and commitment—as pillars for organizational culture. These concepts are not just theoretical; they guide concrete actions like offsite gatherings, collaborative planning sessions, and cross-functional problem-solving to address pain points and reduce friction. One of his most effective strategies has been establishing open channels for innovation through initiatives like a “Shark Tank” pitch format, where employees present business ideas. He emphasizes that listening isn't enough—leaders must also provide feedback on why certain ideas are or are not adopted to maintain trust and morale. Cultural alignment is another key focus. Hiring for fit and reinforcing cultural values through regular feedback cycles is central to sustaining the company's ethos. Kohei believes in cultivating resilience within teams by encouraging calculated risk-taking, building from small wins, and gradually reinforcing a growth mindset. He also balances global and local expectations, often acting as a bridge between AB InBev's global vision and Japan's unique market realities. For him, effective leadership in Japan requires balancing patience with ambition—acknowledging that while change takes time, a leader must still push toward transformation. His ability to navigate these nuances—combined with personal routines like regular exercise and mindfulness—supports both his own resilience and that of the organization.

Alison shares her perspective on why structure is so much more than just an organisational chart or job descriptions. She compares a well-structured MSP to an orchestra, where the conductor sets the pace and ensures each musician plays their part in harmony. In an MSP, the leadership team acts as the conductor, guiding different departments while allowing them to operate effectively within their roles. Without this level of coordination, businesses risk becoming chaotic, where people take on mismatched roles, processes break down, and leadership gets bogged down in daily operations rather than focusing on strategic growth. One of the key takeaways from this conversation is the importance of defining leadership roles early on. Many MSP owners make the mistake of promoting internally without fully assessing whether the individual is ready for leadership. Just because someone is a brilliant technical expert or account manager doesn't mean they'll thrive in a leadership position. Alison emphasises that the transition from a technical role to a senior leadership team (SLT) role requires different skills—strategic thinking, communication, and the ability to manage and inspire a team. That's why it's crucial to evaluate potential leaders based on their ability to drive the business forward, rather than simply their tenure or technical expertise. We also touch on the reality that most MSPs don't get past the £1 million turnover mark, largely due to poor structure. If an MSP wants to scale beyond this, it needs to establish a proper SLT with clear departmental functions, accountability, and measurable outcomes. But as we discuss, there's no shop called 'SLTs R Us' where MSP owners can simply pick out a ready-made leadership team. Instead, they have to be intentional about developing leaders internally or bringing in external talent who align with their business vision and culture. Alison highlights the critical need for strong communication across all levels of an MSP. Many businesses assume that everyone understands the company vision, but often, strategy is only understood at board level while the rest of the team remains out of the loop. This creates internal conflicts, especially between service and sales teams, as they struggle to see how their roles contribute to the overall business success. The solution? A structured approach to internal communication—regular meetings, clear role definitions, and alignment on key objectives so that every team member knows their contribution to the bigger picture. Recruiting the right leaders is another major challenge for MSPs, especially when filling gaps in an SLT. Alison advises MSP owners to start by defining exactly what they need from a role before hiring. Is it a Chief Technology Officer, a Head of Operations, or a Commercial Director? More importantly, does this person need to come from a similar-sized MSP or from a different background? Bringing in someone who has only worked in a highly structured corporate environment may struggle in a fast-moving MSP where adaptability is key. Understanding the culture and operational pace of an MSP is just as important as technical expertise. We also explore the growing trend of fractional leadership, which is becoming an invaluable solution for MSPs that need experienced leadership but don't require (or can't afford) full-time roles. Many MSPs looking to scale can benefit from a fractional CIO, CTO, or COO who brings expertise and strategic oversight without the long-term commitment of a permanent hire. This approach provides flexibility, ensures that high-level decisions are being made, and prevents business owners from becoming overwhelmed by operational responsibilities. The conversation then shifts to leadership models and how they impact MSP structure. Alison emphasises that there's no one-size-fits-all model—every MSP must build a structure that fits its size, growth ambitions, and company culture. However, certain fundamentals remain universal: defining a clear vision, having structured departmental plans, and ensuring that every role contributes to business growth. Whether a business is running a flat structure with few management layers or a more hierarchical setup, the key is clarity—who is responsible for what, how decisions flow, and how success is measured. One of the biggest pitfalls we see in MSPs is a lack of focus on operational efficiency. Many MSPs end up stagnating at break-even because they fail to measure success properly. Business owners must be clear on what their teams need to deliver. Are they driving revenue? Improving client retention? Expanding service offerings? Without these key performance indicators, an MSP can fall into the trap of 'busyness' without real business progress. Alison leaves us with a final thought: MSPs need to take structure seriously if they want to grow beyond the owner-operator phase. Every MSP must define what success looks like, ensure clear communication across the team, and build a leadership structure that supports both day-to-day operations and long-term strategic goals. Whether this means promoting from within, hiring externally, or leveraging fractional leadership, the key is to be proactive rather than reactive. Midland Tyre Services has established a new standard of safety across its entire fleet operations by implementing advanced AI-powered solutions from Samsara Inc. ("Samsara") (NYSE: IOT), the pioneer of the Connected OperationsPlatform. Through integrated telematics, GPS tracking, and dual-facing AI Dash Cams, Midland Tyre Services has gained greater visibility into individual driver performance and reduced accidents by 54% over the last two years. Midland Tyre Services supplies some of Ireland's largest blue-chip companies with new tyres and attends over 8,000+ breakdowns every year. After experiencing a high accident rate and, as a result, high insurance premiums, the company turned to Samsara for a new approach to safety and driver behaviour for its large fleet of vehicles that operate 24/7 365 days a year. Using Samsara's Connected Operations platform, Midland Tyre Services now has a birds-eye view over its entire fleet. Enhanced driver tracking and fleet management has had a significant impact on overall efficiency, reducing total time spent managing the fleet by 50%. It has also saved an average of 20 minutes on each breakdown call-out, totalling 2,333 hours - or 97 days - across the year. In addition, Midland Tyre Service has built targeted safety coaching programmes for drivers, resulting in an average driver score - a metric that tracks, measures, and reports on individual driver performance - of 96%, pushing drivers into the 'elite' safety bracket of 90 or higher. The platform allows managers to gain insights into risky driver behaviours, and also assess situations where the driver is not at fault - allowing them to exonerate drivers which wasn't previously possible. As a result, accidents have reduced by 54% in two years, the company has renegotiated insurance premiums to reduce overall costs and the team has created a culture of safety across the business. Commenting on the implementation of Samsara technology, Chris Parle, Commercial Director at Midland Tyre Services, said, "Samsara gives us a powerful pair of eyes across our entire fleet, helping us resolve issues and respond to callouts much faster. We can share tracking data through dispatch links so our customers and technicians have a clear view of the nearest vehicle responding. It's great for transparency and having complete visibility over our drivers is a massive benefit." Philip van der Wilt, SVP and GM EMEA at Samsara, said, "Midland Tyre Services is a great illustration of using technology to put drivers first and facilitate a cultural change throughout the organisation. Now, with access to the right data, fleet managers know how to best support drivers and where to allocate resources as necessary. "When the back office and drivers on the road have the tools to work together effectively, businesses see a tangible improvement in safety and productivity - and Midland Tyre Services is a perfect example of this principle."
