(Begin episode transcript) Hi Friends, I'm Scott. This is What a Weird Week where we catch you up on the weird news of the week. For transcript/ shownotes/ podcast stuff see www.shownotes.page! Here's Season 5, Episode 18 first published on Friday May 3rd 2024 ... ❿ From Sky News. Headline is, 13 year old boy finds holy grail of Legos... that was lost at sea. The story is about a shipping container filled with Legos, which was lost at sea in 1997. And this young fellow in Cornwall, UK has been going to the beach to find Legos. And the holy grail of the Legos is the octopus. And after two years of searching... The 13 year old has found an octopus. Quite rare, quite a find. There's a whole project, someone named Tracy Williams has started up the Lego Lost at Sea Project. And for years now they've been finding Lego pieces that were lost at sea. The last plastic octopus was found 18 years ago. They're excited. Some more pieces are turning up because of the winter, the type of winter they had at the seashore in Cornwall. Interesting hobby. I really feel like this is a wholesome pastime, finding those rare Lego pieces. Well done. LEGO Archaeologists! https://news.sky.com/story/boy-13-finds-holy-grail-lego-octopus-piece-from-sea-spillage-in-1997-13123805 ... ❾ Milan, Italy To ban ice cream. That was the headline from Sky News earlier this week. Milan, Italy has had enough and ice cream is outlawed. You will go to ice cream jail and you will, which I imagine is very hot, and you will sit there and think about what you've donen, Ice cream lovers. In fact, if you read the article, it's first of all, they're talking about gelato, not ice cream, which I believe they're different things, aren't they? I'm not all that cultured. And it's not exactly a ban. It's places that sell ice cream or gelato and other fast food like pizza and late night foods. They have to shut her down after midnight because tourists and revelers. Tourists and people who eat food are too darn loud for the good folks of Milan, Italy. So that's why they're looking at a partial band of delicious gelato and pizza. https://news.sky.com/story/milan-poised-to-ban-ice-cream-pizza-and-more-after-midnight-after-new-proposed-law-13121064 ... ❽ From the Associated Press, the headline... To fend off tourists, a town in Japan is building a big screen to block the view of Mount Fuji. Headline says it all. The town has had enough of tourists taking photos and being a nuisance. And so to stop people from pausing in a certain place in town and taking an iconic photo of Mount Fuji. They're putting a giant wall screen. They're blocking the view for folks. And it all started, you guessed it, you guys, with social media. There was a trend, somebody got a photo of Mount Fuji in the background. And it looked like Mount Fuji was sitting on top of a convenience store. And that's hilarious. I can't blame you, social media. That is hilarious. But it became too much. So now the screens are growing up. There will be no viewing Mount Fuji from this place. Move along tourists. That's me paraphrasing. https://apnews.com/article/japan-fuji-tourists-screen-9ac5d8f02062ff3c1e573870a6787f16 ... ❼ Chicago's rat hole back in the news. This one has a happy ending. I'll tell you right now. If you missed it, we talked about the rat hole and was all over the news (character limit!) for whole list see https://www.scottyandtony.com/2024/05/what-weird-week-ten-weird-things-that.html --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/weirdweek/message

Conviction: So What?• Where does this fit? - Mark is the shortest gospel and is full of action focusing more on Jesus' ministry than His teaching. - Mark, cousin of Peter, got eyewitness reports from him, a follower of Jesus Himself, he be the “young man” in the Garden of Gethsemane. - This is the most “story like” of all the gospels with character development, plot, tension, and even a cliffhanger ending.• What should we believe? - Jesus is the Messiah/Christ—the long awaited Savior promised in the Old Testament. - Following Jesus is often a confusing struggle but worth it. - Jesus obediently suffered to fulfill His calling. We should expect nothing less for ourselves.• How should we behave? - Follow Jesus in spite of confusion. - Follow Jesus in spite of fear.Next Steps • Embrace a life of following Jesus in spite of confusion, fear, and struggling. • Be thankful that Jesus is patient with us and understands the struggle we have following Him. Home Church Questions • What about Ken's presentation of Mark was most helpful and challenging?• Read 1:17. Jesus's invitation to Simon and Andrew was to follow him as he transformed them from “fishermen” to “fishers of men.” Share with the group how he has transformed your life. What area of your life is he working on transforming right now?• Over 40 times, Mark described Jesus as a man of action, marked out by the description “immediately.” Is there any action in your life that you know you need to take, but have put it off? • Read 4:35-41. Among the gospels, Mark is unique in recording Jesus's words, “Peace, be still.” What turmoil or tension are you now experiencing for which Jesus is saying to you “Peace, be still,” “Why are you so afraid?” and “Have you still no faith?”• One theme that stands out in Mark's gospel is Jesus's rebukes directed at his disciples. Is there now a need to forgive someone?• In message #5, Jesus looks to the future relating not only the signs of his coming, but also how we should live in the meantime. Read Matthew 25:14-30. Black History in the USA comes to a close. At times, small parts of the recording are omitted and so the full transcript is provided below: LB: So with you being an author and again you're touching on education, you're really trying to educate people on the different things that you believe in. But not only that, what needs to be brought attention to. What advice can you give to any up-coming authors that may be listening to you tonight and saying ‘you know what, I just wanna go ahead and write. Make a leap and jump out there and do something I've never done. I know that I'm supposed to be writing but don't know how to start. So what advice would you give to an up-coming author tonight? TW: I would say, I think this is the most important thing. Write about something that you're passionate about. It doesn't necessarily have to be something that is expected of you. I never thought that I would be writing about a topic such as this. Many of us feel that we have to write about certain things that are characteristic of or stereotypical of who people might think we are. I think as a writer the best advice that I can give to somebody is to… if there's something that you are truly passionate about, write about that. Be brave enough step out of your comfort zone and really put the time and the research in. Just put pen to paper and start the process and something will begin to appear. It's almost like training, when you're training and your muscles become more efficient, they become more elasticated, they become supple they, become (more) stronger. Writing is that type of skill it's like exercising a muscle and if you do it little and often on a regular basis you will and you can create something that is truly special (and) truly unique and truly worthy of being read and being appreciated by other people. So that would be the one piece of advice: step out of the boat if you want to write something that is untraditional to your background or to your culture, then do not be afraid to do so. LB: Absolutely, I totally agree. I love that you sat down on even writing something that people wouldn't have expected for you to write. I love that. I love when people step out of the box and when they go a little further and not just with the familiar of what they think people are gonna be looking for them to do. I love that you mention that that is a key sign of bravery to me. I think that is a huge leap in trying to step away from the familiar, in trying something else that is not expected and so I love that. So, Ms Tracy why don't you go ahead and tell everybody how they can connect with you. Let everyone know about any upcoming events and projects that you have going on for 2022. TDW: Well they can contact me. I'm on most social media platforms. Check me out on Facebook, Instagram at ‘Stories to be tolled'. Now tolled is spelt  ‘t-o-l-l-e-d' it is not spelt ‘told' in the usual sense. That is something that I did on purpose to try and stand out from the normal ‘stories to be told' sentence. You can find me on Facebook, you can find me on Instagram. I'm on Twitter at dw_tracy and of course there's the website https://storiestobetolled.com  where all my social media links can be found (there). So just go to the website and that will be the easiest way to connect with me and if you want to send me an email info@storiestobetolled.com Great and do you have any upcoming events that you want to share? TDW: At the moment, I'm doing self-publishing with a freelance publisher to get the next four books out. The next four books will be out in 2022. I am hoping to get them out by Easter and I am also appearing as a feature author in a magazine called ‘Aspiring Authors.' A US publication looking to feature some aspiring authors for their black history month and so I will be featured in that and I will also be on the cover. I will continue to grow my audience through my podcast and also to promote my books for home learning. So (I'm) really targeting parents who want to engage with the subject area through home learning together with their children. So, those are the key areas that I'm going to be looking at this year. LB: Ok well I love it Tracy. I do appreciate you taking (time) out of your busy schedule to come and bless Facing Purpose Radio with your voice, with your expertise with what you believe in and what your heart really stands for and we can't wait to continue to look out for the major things that you're going to be doing in the near future. I speak blessing upon you and all your endeavours and everyone make sure that you follow up with all her social media, get in contact with her, learn something. I pray that something was said tonight that will help you guys to help you go into your 2022 just a little bit more reassured that you can do this, if you're an author. Even if you're not an author, you may be an educator, just like Ms Tracy and she decided to step out of the box and go a little further with what she's doing. Take a little note from her book and go and make the leap. So I have enjoyed this conversation. I have enjoyed just listening to you talk about what you love and what you put your hand to and involved in. So Tracy, thank you so much for connecting with me and coming on to the show. TDW: Lakia, it's been a pleasure and a privilege to be on your show, just talking and sharing with you. Thank you so much for having me on and wishing you a happy 2022. LB: Yes Ma'am! February is the month for celebrating Black History in the USA. In this podcast episode Tracy continues with her virtual visit across 'the Pond' with her very first interview. The interview was recorded on New Year's Day on the 'Facing Purpose Radio Show' in the US hosted by Elder Lakia Barnett. In this the second part of this interview, Tracy shares what inspired her to create the multi-media platform that is ‘Stories to be tolled' reveals the one thing that the stories couldn't do without and what is the ‘ultimate' learning journey for all her users. If you enjoy these podcasts then visit the website https://storiestobetolled.com for more information and join us on our mailing list and receive a free sample of each of the current story titles. At times, small parts of the recording are omitted and so the full transcript is provided below: LB: Hello, hello, hello! We are back from our commercial break with the lovely Ms Tracy Williams all the way from the UK. So Ms Tracy, I was reading in your bio that you have multi-media platforms explain to me about how that works how you kinda started to expand from just being an author to doing other things that you do. TDW: Well, I think the multi-media learning platform is really the educationalist side of me. The stories are the author element of who I am. You know, I spent about 18 months writing the stories, so I was just in a creative writing flow for about 18 months and you know, to be really honest once I had finished the stories Lakia, I had both a sense of elation and achievement but I also had a sense of deflation as well. Because the British Empire has such a lot of moving parts to it, I didn't want the stories to sit in a vacuum. Because once I'd published them it would be ‘Well, who are the stories for?' Who are your target audience? Why have you written them? Ok, I've written them because I've been inspired to write them but there's got to be a proof of concept about it.  When I was writing the stories which must have been back in 2017, 2018 there wasn't really that much of a heightened awareness to learn more about the subject of the British Empire, it was very much a taboo subject (to be really honest, if I'm really honest about it). It was an ‘uncomfortable truth' so to speak that nobody really wanted to talk about or look really deeply at. I knew that it was important enough to have a platform and that it should be taught in our schools. It should be read to children at story time or at bed time at home. I just felt that, the stories themselves, although they were good, it couldn't be left in a vacuum there needed to be some context to it so that any learner from 9-14 years and upwards would be able to read and understand but within a context and so that's why I decided to create a learning journey to go with the stories. So, at the back of the stories there are various questions that the learner can then go upon, they can start carrying out their own learning journey, their own research after they've read the story. There's a chronology, so a list of key dates that come up in the actual story and then there's an activity that I call ‘build your vocabulary' because vocabulary is such a difficult thing to learn and to teach. I decided to pick out phrases and words within the stories that children and young people would be able to go off and find out more about and understand how to build their vocabulary and be able to apply that new vocabulary to new learning. I then decided to go a step further and create the learning platform which is initially where everything lives relating to ‘Stories to be tolled' The stories can be purchased there (I'm actually on the website now) and we've got other things like mini-documentaries, which are just like mini films that I've created and learning journeys that continue, are an expansion or a continuation of each of the stories. If you went on the website now and clicked on the ‘learning journey' menu you will see the titles of each of the four books that are out now as well as four new titles that I'm going to be planning to launch this year. If you clicked on to ‘Caribbean Wind' there would come up an alternative chronology, suggestions for biographies, historical sources, You tube videos and I'm developing an art gallery of alternative history. So, there's something for all types of learner and it just feeds into my overall vision for ‘Stories to be tolled' that we can take something that in a lot of ways is a difficult and emotive subject to explore and to learn about and we can deliver it, we can approach it in a way that is both thoughtful, engaging, imaginative, interesting and just to break down some of the taboos about the subject area because I feel when you're ignorant about a subject area, the more you are ignorant the more fearful you are. The more prejudiced you are and the more ignorance there is around the topic and so that is what the multi-media platform is there to do, to help the ordinary person, help the ordinary learner engage and hopefully something on it will spark their interest to continue or develop their own learning journey about whatever aspect of the topic they want to find out about so that was the rationale behind the learning journey and it's growing all the time. It's something that I'm really proud of, its' quite unique. LB: So yes that is really, really interesting you have your background as an educator, a teacher and you're really incorporating these things into everything that you do and it leaves no room for confusion when people see you and they hear about you, they know what you stand for. So when people are getting these books Tracy what do you want the readers to take from this? When they're reading your books what do you want then to learn and take from reading this collection of books? TDW: I think the one thing that I want them to learn about is to understand that the world is multi-faceted, the world is interconnected and it's not interconnected because we have all this technology and we have all these social media platforms. The world is interconnected because this one phenomenon that took place over a period of 400 years is really the key to understanding how the world is today. It's the one thing that can provide that link to a lot of international relationships between countries, the way that countries define their foreign policies with each other. The way that various Diasporas have developed and emerged out of displacement of indigenous people from their home lands. I know that these are difficult subjects to look at but I feel that these are some of the main things that readers need to understand and to learn about as they're reading the stories. I get so many readers saying to me' Tracy I never knew about this or I never knew about that.' ‘I never knew that the Empire Windrush used to be a German Nazi warship that was used in WW2. I never knew anything about the early period of European discovery and how Britain came about its first encounter of the Caribbean.' ‘I didn't know it was a failed colonial exercise carried out by Scotland that caused the unification of Scotland and England.'  Many of us seem to think that it was when Elizabeth 1st died and James 6th of Scotland became James 1st of England and united the two countries but stories really do dispel a lot of assertions, a lot of assumptions that ordinary people like myself and like you make about history we are taught at school and then you realise that a lot of it is not necessarily fact, it's just coming from a certain perspective and I thought ‘right, that's my strapline.' That is actually how I got the strapline ‘history is a matter of fact…or perspective?' because there are so many perspectives in history. We only hear about the perspective of the conqueror, of the victor, you never hear of the perspective of those who have gone past and those who have died and are not here to tell their tale.  So the stories is that balance of perspective and just lets the reader know ‘look, regardless of what you've been taught in school, regardless of your formal education, quite often it's what we go out and learn for ourselves that helps us have a much more balanced view of the world we live in and a greater tolerance and a greater understanding of why things are the way they are today.' Why there are issues and seemingly unsolved problems in certain parts of the world and more of an empathy for indigenous populations that are going through a tumultuous time because we can then use these stories to really un-pick and understand what the roots of these issues are. So that's what I want readers to take away. (Copyright Tracy D Williams 2022)

February is the month for celebrating Black History in the USA. In this podcast episode Tracy makes a virtual visit across 'the Pond' and shares the first part of her very first interview. The interview was recorded on New Years Day on the 'Facing Purpose Radio Show' in the US hosted by Elder Lakia Barnett. In this episode Tracy shares what was the turning point for her in her educational career, the cause of self-doubt when she debuted as a podcaster and what is important to her as she balances her role as a school leader with the many 'hats' that she has to wear. If you enjoy these podcasts then visit the website https://storiestobetolled.com for more information and join us on our mailing list and receive a free sample of each of the current story titles. At times, small parts of the recording are omitted and so the full transcript is provided below: LB: Welcome back to Facing Purpose Radio show, I'm your host Lakia Barnette!  it's so great to be back before you and happy new year to everybody that Is listening right now. I am excited first of all to be in the land of the living I have had one heck of a week, you guys! I think the last show I was fine and then the next time I pump the round, I got sick you guys! This is January 1st CAN YOU BELIEVE IT! I can't because 2022 is here. So I'm excited about our guest on tonight. All the way form the UK. How can you all say we touching down in the UK like that's super dobe but anyhow, I am excited about her, she is an author, a podcaster, she does so many different things. We like to call this a woman with many, many hats so without further ado, let's go ahead and introduce Tracy Williams! Welcome to Facing Purpose! TDW: Hi everyone! Hi Lakia, I am so grateful to be on the show! Thank you for giving me this opportunity, tonight and you know, it's the first night of the Year for us so I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity for me to kick off 2022 with an interview, so thanks for having me. LB: Yes! and I'm so, listen I love your accent Tracy, your accent is beautiful. I've never been to the UK. I've heard about the UK but I've never been there. Would like to go one day if I can get the nerve to sit on a plane that long ok. Everybody who knows me knows I'm not a friend of planes at all but we're gonna break that this year but I would be excited to visit that place one day, one day I have to go. So, why don't you go ahead and introduce yourself to everybody Tracy? TDW: I'm Tracy Williams, I write under the pen name of Tracy DW because, as you said I'm a woman wearing many hats. I not only write stories for children and I do podcasting but I'm also a singer songwriter as well and writing songs was pretty much how I got into writing from a very young age. But having said that, I've always been an avid reader, I've always had a passion for history and it is from those two things that my stories or my story series called ‘Stories to be tolled' is actually born from.  I have been in education, been working in the British education system for many years now and I currently work as a Deputy Head teacher in a school in East London which is the equivalent of a Vice Principle, I think, in the States. After having many years of teaching black history month in October (because we have black history month in October over in the UK), I just became a bit despondent  with the way that black history was being conveyed and was being, or not being taught in schools. There was a particular focus in black history month on American history rather than British history so I thought ‘ you know, I'm gonna do something about this.' I've always had a passion for the British Empire and Britain's colonial past and it has been something that I feel has been a missing link within our education system, particularly in our British education system and I just got the idea for writing some stories that I hoped would inspire children and would inspire people to learn about the topic in a more imaginative, though provoking and engaging way.  So, as I began to do my research I did a timeline and structured my stories chapters and story titles around that and. One day in January, actually several year ago back in 2017 I sat down at my desk and began to write the stories as I began to write I just felt ‘WOW' this is a major piece of work and it really does deserve a platform. Now at the time I hadn't thought u of the name ‘stories to be tolled' it was just a set of stories but as I began to write it just started from there and I felt it deserved something more. That's how I built the website around it and placed min documentaries and additional learning journeys and then last, but not least the podcast series came along and it just opened up a whole new world it gave a different dimension to the stories.  I use it to compliment the stories in terms of the research that didn't go into the stories. I script them and then turn them into a podcast series and I just invite listeners to come along with me on my learning journey. So, the podcasts provide a more dynamic slant a more dynamic dimension to the stories so here I am today talking to you I have four stories out at the moment which are available on the website ‘Caribbean wind,' Caribbean Rush,' ‘Nights at the Round  Table- the Berlin Conference 1884  and ‘Gone with the Wind?' which I'm having a special focus right now in January. Not a celebration but like a commemoration of the famous ‘Wind of Change' speech  by Harold Macmillan that was given in Accra Ghana in January in  1960, so that a little bit about me. LB: Well, that was an amazing intro, letting people know just who you are and what amazing things that you do. So tell me about your podcast. Tell me a little bit about how that kind of started and what is it about and what is it gearing towards? TDW: Well, it was something that I had never considered before. I think lock down last year, or rather in 2020 I think that was a catalyst for many people to develop some kind of ambition or aspiration. Whether it be writing a book or doing something creative because obviously we were all at home for such a long time. I never considered doing a podcast. If someone had told me two years ago ‘you know Tracy you're gonna be doing a podcast in 2020, you're gonna begin doing that' I would have never believed them but I had so much research that hadn't made it in to the stories so I thought ‘well, how can I repurpose all of this valuable content? It didn't fit into the stories. what can I do with it?' So I thought I'll create some scripts and I'll set up a podcast series and continue my learning journey and continue to share my learning journey through that. Also it provides a human element it provides a face, it provides a voice it provides a speaking platform to the stories and my format for each episode is quite similar. I refer to the stories in the content of my episodes. Some of the episodes are not linked to the stories. Some of the episodes are linked to various things that are trending. So instance when Barbados became a republic in October last year I decided, ‘right, I think that's a very apt thing to do a podcast focus.' To be honest, I hadn't learnt that much about Barbados because it doesn't really crop up anywhere in my stories so the podcasts really work to ‘fill the gap' as it were and to bridge the gap between what the stories leave out and what is either currently going on in the world relating to the post-colonial era or what's happened in the past. So that's where and how my podcasts fit in to the whole ‘Stories to be tolled' movement. LB: Well. I love how different your podcasts sound, that you make them link to the book that you're putting out and what you're speaking to and what you believe. I think that is like super cool to have a podcast like that. So, let me ask this question; has it always been easy and I know that's like ‘really Lakia, you ask me has it been easy?' I think that a lot of people don't understand the story behind the voice that you hear and behind the faces that you see. They didn't just arrive, you know, things happen along the way. So you now, do you wanna elaborate a little bit on a time when you can just remember you kinda' felt like you were just like ‘ look I don't know if I should continue doing this' have you ever felt like that? TDW: Oh yes I have had moments pf self-doubt. I wouldn't be human if I didn't have moments of self-doubt. I mean, one of the challenges I have isn't so much doing the podcasts but it's fitting it in to everything else. I'm a school leader, I'm very, very busy and even within my role as a school leader I juggle hats, several hats within that. I think it's finding a balance that works for me as an individual which I am constantly striving to do to just find the time to put the work in. As you do podcasting the more and more you do it the key is to be regular, consistent and purposeful and continue to plan your workflow so you're always several steps ahead. So for instance, I currently have ideas for the next eight podcasts which are gonna take me up to Easter this year, so you're constantly planning topics that you want to look at. I have friends and family and acquaintances who come to me and ask me to do special focuses; ‘ Oh Tracy would you consider doing ‘this' as a focus or would you consider doing ‘that' as a focus for a podcast episode.' You know, I take on board feedback and ideas that come my way. You know, I'm very open, it does have a tight format but I'm very fluid and I'm very flexible to anything that is trending and to anything that people ask me to find out more about and make a special focus of. But yes, there have been times when I've thought ‘oh my God what am I doing? What am I doing?' Sometime we get what we call ‘imposter syndrome.'  ‘There's lots of people who are far more learned and far more knowledgeable about this subject than you why are you doing this? Who is it for? Who is going to listen?' Then I realise, when I get feedback from people I feel really encouraged, I feel really, really motivated, I feel really purposeful because at the end of the day I'm an educationalist, Oh I'm a black woman, I have a voice and I can bring my perspective as an individual as well as an educationalist to that and some people just can't do that.  Also there's the authenticity, just being myself and just looking at things and giving my own point of view and just making it engaging and making it understandable and informative because that's what a lot of people tell me. They tell me ‘Oh we love your podcasts, they're really informative' they're of a high standard, they really do connect the dots and present a more global perspective about the world that we live in today and we can make connections about the past with what is currently going on today. I think people have really come to appreciate the podcasts series because it's helped them to do the same, it's helped them to make those connections . It's for people who are just like me. You know, you make podcasts for people who are just like you. Who just want to learn more about a particular topic and don't want to come under any particular stress about it. Although in a good way I take the stress out of the learning because I put the work in to make certain topics more digestible, more concise and more cohesive. So yes, it is hard at times but when I get the feedback, when I look at the numbers on the STATS, I just know, it's all worth it… And that's what helps me to keep going!! LB: Absolutely, absolutely! I think everyone needs that encouragement because some people, we see things, we have a goal set in mind but sometimes we might not always set off, you know the way that we want but I love that you use the word ‘consistency.' There's consistency beside everything we do, behind everything that we do. So we're gonna take a quick, quick break Ms Tracy and when we come back, we're gonna dive in. I wanna know more about these books because you have a collection of books but also I wanna know more about your multi-media platform. We'll talk about that right after this break.
