Ok, so technically National Mead Day was 8/7 but this show comes out on Monday so just be happy there is another excuse to celebrate drinking alcohol!  Dan and Tom have wanted to do a mead episode for quite some time and the pieces finally all came together.  When it comes to traditional mead in this country there are few people better qualified and informed than Aly Schramm, CEO of Schramm's Mead.  If you've been thinking of dipping your toe in the world of mead or maybe you are a Schramm's fanboy or fangirl, you need to give this a listen!  Aly did not disappoint and ATB was so grateful for the time we spent speaking with her.  Not unlike craft beer, the mead industry in the US also has a "new money" aspect to it and damn is it exciting!  ATB could not have a mead episode without interviewing one of the newest and highly anticipated meaderies in the country.  Charles Rapadas, proprietor of Culling, also joined us to offer his perspective on what it's been like for him brewing mead and opening up a brand new business.   Whether you are familiar with Charles or not you have probably heard of his other passion project, Three Chiefs, where some of the biggest stouts in the country have come from.  Give a listen and find out how to get on Culling's waiting list for future memberships!  All this, and not much more, on another episode of America The BREW-tiful!

2-26-19 Tonight we are getting together with Mike Manning, co-owner of The Colony Meadery in Allentown, PA. Mike is speaking at the AMMA MeadCon in two sessions, Session Meads, and Post Fermentation Mead Flavoring. Mike has been brewing since 2001, and did his first mead in 2009, on Mead Day. He's gone on to win a bunch of medals, and won BOS in Valhalla, resulting in a collaboration mead with Moonlight Meadery that is still a core mead with them. When Mike did the collab, he was hooked, and eventually co-founded The Colony Meadery with Greg Heller-LaBelle. The Colony is making some pretty awesome meads. Mike is a huge proponent of balance in meads, getting the a combination of flavors, acids and tannins using both during and post fermentation techniques to ensure his meads are 'just right'. And he's got the experience and medals to back it up. We'll be talking about what to expect at his talks in two weeks, as well as deliving into his ideas on mead balance and what works and what doesn't. Common Bond Brewers is Montgomery's first production brewery

Common Bond Brewers is helping revitalize Downtown Montgomery, Alabama Many homebrewers have a dream to open their own brewery.  For Common Bond Brewers co-founder Andrew McNally the dream grabbed him in 2014 after participating in a homebrew competition with Good People Brewing in Birmingham, AL.  As he drove home her pondered life, liberty, and starting his own brewery.   He decided then that he was going to make it happen.  Andrew partnered with his friend Tim Doles and the two set out to build a brewery.  With the help of friends investments and putting their own financial tails on the line they opened in April 2018, the first production brewery in town in Montgomery. McNally and Doles admit that Montgomery isn't a craft beer town, yet.  However, there was overwhelming excitement from the community leading up to the brewery opening and fantastic support since they've opened.  Their core beers (a Blonde, Pale Ale. IPA, and a Rye Amber) offer familiar flavors and a little something different.  Through their Hop Workshop series, they'll explore a variety of styles with a focus on the hop profile. Common Bond is also helping to revitalize the downtown area, a location that just a few years ago, "was not somewhere you wanted to be," according to McNally.  Their building has been around for decades and is shared with Bibb Street Pizza.  Elements from the original building were used in the decor of their taproom. In the news this week Brian shares info on changes to the brewery-to-brewery transfer laws, the first beer brewed from marijuana plants, and the upcoming IPA Day and Mead Day. Our beers this week included Common Bond's Blonde, Ramber (Rye Amber), and Hop Workshop 001 brewed with Denali hops.  We also cracked open a Pontoon Kill the Pain, Creature Comforts Arcadiana, Hutton & Smith Wheatwine, and Ironmonger's Billett, a blood orange Pilsner.
