Life is so busy that many people are missing out on what's most important ... a relationship with Jesus. When Jesus was born, the inn keeper and all of the people, except for the shepherds, were too busy to notice the Messiah had been born. Unfortunately, that continues today. Don't be too busy. Don't miss out on Jesus. The Love In Action Minute airs every day on The Joy FM thanks to a generous donation from Weed Man, who provides quality lawn care services for the greater Dothan area. LIA Devotional: God tells the prophet Ezekiel in Ez. 16:49-50, that He destroyed Sodom because they "did not help the "poor and needy." Throughout scripture we read where God commands us to help the poor and needy. As followers of Jesus, we cannot ignore His commands. In fact, Jesus says in John 14:15, "If you love me, you will keep My commandments." We keep His commandments because love Him. Let's show our love of Jesus by keeping His commandments, including helping the poor and needy. Our Lord commands us to help and serve those who are in need around us. It's a command we take seriously here at Love In Action Ministries. It's a command for all believers. Joseph's Dreams37.1 Jacob lived in the land of his father's sojournings, in the land of Canaan.2 These are the generations of Jacob.Joseph, being seventeen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives. And Joseph brought a bad report of them to their father. 3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his sons, because he was the son of his old age. And he made him a robe of many colors. 4 But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peacefully to him.5 Now Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers they hated him even more. 6 He said to them, “Hear this dream that I have dreamed: 7 Behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and stood upright. And behold, your sheaves gathered around it and bowed down to my sheaf.” 8 His brothers said to him, “Are you indeed to reign over us? Or are you indeed to rule over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.9 Then he dreamed another dream and told it to his brothers and said, “Behold, I have dreamed another dream. Behold, the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” 10 But when he told it to his father and to his brothers, his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves to the ground before you?”11 And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind.Joseph Sold by His Brothers12 Now his brothers went to pasture their father's flock near Shechem.13 And Israel said to Joseph, “Are not your brothers pasturing the flock at Shechem? Come, I will send you to them.” And he said to him, “Here I am.” 14 So he said to him, “Go now, see if it is well with your brothers and with the flock, and bring me word.” So he sent him from the Valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. 15 And a man found him wandering in the fields. And the man asked him, “What are you seeking?” 16 “I am seeking my brothers,” he said. “Tell me, please, where they are pasturing the flock.” 17 And the man said, “They have gone away, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.'” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.18 They saw him from afar, and before he came near to them they conspired against him to kill him. 19 They said to one another, “Here comes this dreamer. 20 Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. Then we will say that a fierce animal has devoured him, and we will see what will become of his dreams.” 21 But when Reuben heard it, he rescued him out of their hands, saying, “Let us not take his life.”22 And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood; throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him”—that he might rescue him out of their hand to restore him to his father. 23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore. 24 And they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.25 Then they sat down to eat. And looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry it down to Egypt. 26 Then Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? 27 Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And his brothers listened to him. 28 Then Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt.29 When Reuben returned to the pit and saw that Joseph was not in the pit, he tore his clothes 30 and returned to his brothers and said, “The boy is gone, and I, where shall I go?” 31 Then they took Joseph's robe...

Calvary Sunday Messages

Genesis 371 Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.2 This is the account of Jacob's family line. Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him. 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.5 Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. 6 He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: 7 We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”8 His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.9 Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”10 When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?” 11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.12 Now his brothers had gone to graze their father's flocks near Shechem, 13 and Israel said to Joseph, “As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them.” “Very well,” he replied.14 So he said to him, “Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.” Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron. When Joseph arrived at Shechem, 15 a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, “What are you looking for?”16 He replied, “I'm looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?”17 “They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let's go to Dothan.'” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. 18 But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.19 “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. 20 “Come now, let's kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we'll see what comes of his dreams.”21 When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let's not take his life,” he said. 22 “Don't shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don't lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe he was wearing— 24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it.25 As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.26 Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood? 27 Come, let's sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.” His brothers agreed.28 So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.29 When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes. 30 He went back to his brothers and said, “The boy isn't there! Where can I turn now?”31 Then they got Joseph's robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood. 32 They took the ornate robe back to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son's robe.”33 He recognized it and said, “It is my son's robe! Some ferocious animal has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.”34 Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his son many days. 35 All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “No,” he said, “I will continue to mourn until I join my son in the grave.” So his father wept for him.36 Meanwhile, the Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard.

Genesis 37 tells us about Joseph, Israel's (Jacob's) favourite son of his old age. Joseph's mother was Rachel, Israel's favoured wife. Joseph's half brothers were envious of their brother, who was deeply loved. The other brothers were ill disciplined and wicked in their behaviour. Joseph reported this to Israel. To show the love Israel had for Joseph he gave him “a coat of many colours” AV (the Hebrew means “of stripes”, or “strips” – some say suggesting the robe of a priest). This furthered the antagonism towards Joseph. In the course of time Joseph had two dreams, at different times. The first dream was of the wheat harvest – the 11 sheaves of his brothers bowed in reverence before Joseph's upright sheaf – speaking of Joseph's ruling of them (note that this dream had its fulfilment later in Egypt as Genesis 43:26 indicated). The second dream was of the sun, moon and 11 stars did obeisance to Joseph's star. The interpretation of this dream is said by Israel in verse 10. Israel, ie Jacob observed the saying; just as Mary did of the sayings of Simeon in the Temple about her son Jesus some 1,800 years later(Luke 2verses 28-35). Since the dream spoke of Joseph's mother, Rachel, bowing before Joseph it necessitated her resurrection at the coming and kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ. Israel sent Joseph to find his brothers and their flocks. They were found near Dothan. The ten brothers (minus Benjamin) stripped Joseph of his coat and cast him into a waterless pit – symbolic of the grave. Joseph being hated by his brothers spoke of the Lord Jesus being the subject of his brothers' opposition (Psalm 69:8). Joseph was sold for 30 pieces of silver (the price paid to a master for a slave gored by an ox). The same price paid by the chief priests to Judas for the betrayal of the Lord Jesus Christ. He was sold to a passing merchant band of Ishmaelites/Midianites; who were to take Joseph to Egypt to be sold as a slave. Reuben had been absent when Joseph was sold. Reuben had hoped to later rescue Joseph. With Reuben not present the decision to sell Joseph was made by Simeon (the tribe of Simeon became the Scribes) and Levi (the priests) – these were the chief antagonists, who were the foremost of those who envied and hated Jesus (Joseph was enacting a parable of events to come). The 10 brothers conspire to deceive Israel into believing that a wild beast had slain Joseph. Israel was unable to be consoled when he believed that Joseph was dead. In Psalm 39 David asks his Sovereign to let him understand his mortality and limitations. David had to a large degree abandoned his authority since his great sin against God; in the matter of his adultery with Bathsheba and murder of Uriah. David felt his capacity to judge and punish had been undermined by his crimes. And so in silence he allowed his foes a license to rebel. In the end the Psalm tells us that knowing his own insignificance David would trust in the Almighty to vindicate him. David declared in verse 7 that Yahweh was his hope. The Psalmist pleads that the LORD show mercy when disciplining him. For David like all the faithful confesses that he is merely a sojourner awaiting the kingdom. Psalm 40 is a record of the mind and motivation of Messiah. David speaks of being brought from the pit of death – as Jesus would be raised from the grave to live again. The new song in the Psalmist's mouth was the victory song of immortality – new because it can can only be understood in its singing by those made eternal. David encourages the faithful that they must put their trust in their Sovereign. David knew from experience the goodness and the loving kindness of his God. Messiah from verses 6-8 declares his purpose for coming into the world and the secret of his capacity to conquer. Of course it was needful that Jesus be begotten of God to lay the foundation for Messiah's mind to be in tune with his Father. Mosaic sacrifices and offerings could never take away sin; but the offering of Messiah would for once and all time remove the need for further sacrifices. The entire Bible speaks of Messiah and his work. Verse 8 of this Psalm has two distinct meanings in the Hebrew and both are equally true and valid – 1) I delight to do Thy delight; and,2) I will do do Thy will. These speak of the mind and motives of Messiah. It is no wonder that Jesus was the only Beloved of his Father. These words capture David's desires; but not being God's Son – the Messiah – he could not completely outwork this in his own life. Slowly read and meditate on the writer to the Hebrews in the exposition of chapter 10 verses 1-14. Our Lord Jesus will rehearse these matters to the “great congregation” – the assembly of faithful immortalised disciples. Because of David's typical faithfulness and the Christ's actual and complete righteousness; their God (and ours) would ultimately deliver them.

In 2008, Austin was an offensive lineman on the team that helped Swinney secure the head-coaching job with a victory over South Carolina. Swinney even rode on Austin's shoulders to midfield that day to shake the hand of Steve Spurrier. -- Otis Pickett, on returning to his alma mater from Mississippi to be the historian of Clemson University. A significant part of Pickett's mission is introducing and framing the public conversation on Clemson's past, which includes difficult and complicated topics on race. -- Cliff Ellis, former Clemson basketball coach, shares numerous stories about his musical career. Had he not chosen coaching, Ellis could've easily spent his life as a professional musician. In the mid-1960s, his group The Villagers was a sensation and even recorded at the legendary Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Ala. Ellis remembers joining Roy Orbison on stage at a sold-out concert in Dothan, Ala. "If you can perform in front of people with Roy Orbison behind you, you're going to be OK going up against Dean Smith and Mike Krzyzewski," he said. -- Tommy West looks back to a totally different time for Clemson football in the 1990s when the Tigers didn't have any facilities to speak of and were so behind on that front that he once tried to stage an August practice at a local livestock arena.

Thus he used to warn him, so that he saved himself there more than once or twice. 11 And the mind of the king of Syria was greatly troubled because of this thing, and he called his servants and said to them, “Will you not show me who of us is for the king of Israel?” 12 And one of his servants said, “None, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.” 13 And he said, “Go and see where he is, that I may send and seize him.” It was told him, “Behold, he is in Dothan.” 14 So he sent there horses and chariots and a great army, and they came by night and surrounded the city. 15 When the servant of the man of God rose early in the morning and went out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was all around the city. And the servant said, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” 16 He said, “Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17 Then Elisha prayed and said, “O Lord, please open his eyes that he may see.” So the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 18 And when the Syrians came down against him, Elisha prayed to the Lord and said, “Please strike this people with blindness.” So he struck them with blindness in accordance with the prayer of Elisha. 19 And Elisha said to them, “This is not the way, and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom you seek.” And he led them to Samaria. 20 As soon as they entered Samaria, Elisha said, “O Lord, open the eyes of these men, that they may see.” So the Lord opened their eyes and they saw, and behold, they were in the midst of Samaria. 21 As soon as the king of Israel saw them, he said to Elisha, “My father, shall I strike them down? Shall I strike them down?” 22 He answered, “You shall not strike them down. Would you strike down those whom you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink and go to their master.” 23 So he prepared for them a great feast, and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. And the Syrians did not come again on raids into the land of Israel.

Genesis 37: The Beginning of Joseph's Story Genesis 37 marks the start of Joseph's narrative, which is central to the latter part of the book of Genesis. It highlights themes of favoritism, jealousy, betrayal, and God's sovereignty in shaping His purposes through human actions. Jacob, also called Israel, is living in the land of Canaan. Among Jacob's 12 sons, Joseph is his favorite because he was born to Jacob in his old age through Rachel, his beloved wife. Jacob gives Joseph a richly ornamented robe (often referred to as a “coat of many colors”), symbolizing his special status. This favoritism breeds hatred among Joseph's brothers, who cannot speak to him peaceably. Joseph shares two dreams with his family. In the first dream, Joseph and his brothers are binding sheaves of grain in the field, and the brothers' sheaves bow to Joseph's sheaf. In the second dream, the sun, moon, and eleven stars bow down to Joseph. These dreams suggest Joseph's future elevation over his family. The dreams intensify his brothers' jealousy and even draw a rebuke from Jacob, though Jacob keeps the matter in mind. Jacob sends Joseph to check on his brothers, who are tending the flocks in Shechem. Joseph travels from Hebron to Shechem and eventually to Dothan, where his brothers have moved. Seeing Joseph approach, the brothers conspire to kill him and throw him into a cistern, intending to say a wild animal devoured him. Reuben, the eldest, intervenes, suggesting they throw Joseph into the cistern without shedding blood, intending to rescue him later. When Joseph arrives, the brothers strip him of his robe and cast him into an empty cistern. While they eat, a caravan of Ishmaelites traveling to Egypt passes by. Judah suggests selling Joseph to the Ishmaelites instead of killing him. The brothers sell Joseph for twenty pieces of silver, and he is taken to Egypt. Reuben returns to the cistern and finds Joseph gone. In despair, he asks, “The boy isn't there! Where can I turn now?” The brothers dip Joseph's robe in goat's blood and present it to Jacob, deceiving him into believing a wild animal killed Joseph. Jacob mourns deeply and refuses comfort from his family. Meanwhile, Joseph is sold in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officials and captain of the guard. Genesis 37 demonstrates the dangers of favoritism, as Jacob's unequal treatment of his sons causes division and hostility within the family. The brothers' jealousy leads to betrayal and violence, illustrating how unchecked envy can lead to sin. Despite the human failures and sins in the story, God's overarching plan is at work. Joseph's journey to Egypt, though tragic, is the first step in God's plan to save His people during a future famine. Joseph's dreams foreshadow his eventual rise to power and the fulfillment of God's purposes, even though they are initially met with disbelief and scorn. The chapter begins Joseph's journey of suffering and eventual exaltation, which parallels the biblical theme of redemption through suffering. Genesis 37 reminds readers that God's plans are often hidden in the midst of human struggles and failings. While Joseph's story begins with betrayal and suffering, it is a key part of God's providential plan for the salvation of His people. This chapter also challenges us to reflect on our relationships, particularly in family dynamics, and to consider how favoritism, jealousy, and unresolved conflicts can lead to destruction. At the same time, it offers hope that God can redeem even the darkest situations for His glory and our good.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sendme-radio--732966/support.

“Don't be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!” Then Elisha prayed, “O Lord, open his eyes and let him see!” The Lord opened the young man's eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire.” (2 Kings 6:16–17 NLT) One of the most awe-inspiring stories about God's use of angels is found in 2 Kings 6. To fully appreciate the account, some background information is necessary. The king of Syria declared war on Israel. The Syrian king devised secret battle plans with his servants. Unfortunately for him, nothing is secret from the Lord. God supernaturally revealed the king's battle plans to the prophet Elisha. Elisha, in turn, relayed the plans to the king of Israel. The king of Israel then made the necessary strategic adjustments to thwart Syria's plans. After being outmaneuvered one too many times, the king of Syria began to suspect that an Israelite spy had infiltrated his inner circle. But then he received word about what Elisha was doing. The Syrian king learned that Elisha was staying in the town of Dothan. He sent an enormous army to surround Dothan. He intended to make Elisha pay for his God-assisted espionage. The scene that plays out starting in verse 14 is almost comic. Elisha's servant, Gehazi, gets up early in the morning while his master is still sleeping and walks outside to begin his day. What he sees blows his mind and shakes him to his core. The entire city is surrounded by Syrian troops and instruments of war. And Gehazi knows why they're there. So, while Elisha is trying to get a little shut-eye, Gehazi starts freaking out. He wakes the sleeping prophet and says something to the effect of, “Master! Master! We're surrounded by our enemies! What are we going to do?” Elisha did not panic when he heard the news. In fact, he was probably a little irritated that his sleep was interrupted. “Don't be afraid,” he told his servant. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!” (verse 16 NLT). Obviously, that math didn't make sense to Gehazi. Because he was assessing the situation based on what he could see physically. Elisha asked God to sharpen Gehazi's vision, to reveal what was invisible to the servant, so that he could have a more accurate sense of the situation. “The Lord opened the young man's eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire” (verse 17 NLT). Gehazi saw an invisible army of angels, ready to go to battle at God's command. Jesus alluded to a similar invisible army when he rebuked Peter for trying to “save” Him from being arrested. “Don't you realize that I could ask my Father for thousands of angels to protect us, and he would send them instantly?” (Matthew 26:53 NLT). Angels have our backs. They stand ready to support us whenever God commands. So when you feel alone, anxious, or outnumbered, pray as Elisha did. Ask God to make you aware of the invisible army that surrounds and protects you. — Listen to the Greg Laurie Podcast Become a Harvest Partner Support the show: https://harvest.org/supportSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Daily Dose of Hope October 17, 2024 Day 5 of Week 29 Scripture:  2 Kings 4-6; Matthew 5 Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional and podcast that complements the New Hope Church Bible reading plan.  I'm currently sitting in the Newark airport, so as I read this, please excuse the background noise.    Our Old Testament passage for today is 2 Kings 4-6.  Let's start with chapter 4.  This is really a beautiful chapter. The stories we find here demonstrate God's power and his desire to care for those who are suffering and in need. Throughout the Biblical narrative, God walks closely to the poor and vulnerable.   In this chapter, God works through the prophet Elisha to provide for an impoverished widow, resurrect a young boy, and feed hungry prophets. Be sure to read through the whole narrative. I wanted to highlight one of the miracles that God did through the prophet Elisha. A widow of a deceased prophet comes to him quite distressed. After her husband passed, she has significant debts to pay and no way to pay them. She is worried that the creditor will come to take her two sons as payment. Debt slavery was not uncommon in ancient civilizations.  When the poor could not pay their debts, they were often forced into physical labor to repay them. Debt slavery could last years (it wasn't as if there was any accountability).   We see throughout the Old Testament the prophets speaking out against the oppression of the poor and this would have certainly constituted oppression! The prophet Elisha sees the woman's desperation and quickly moves into action. First, he asks her what she has; she has a little olive oil. Next, he tells her to ask her neighbors for as many jars as possible. Once the jars are in place, he has her fill them up. The olive oil continued to flow for as long as there were empty jars. Then, she could sell the oil and pay her debts, protecting her boys from being forced into slavery.   I love how God uses something the woman already has–olive oil–to provide a solution to her problem. I can't help but think, even when we feel like we have nothing of value to offer, there is always something. God has gifted us with talents and resources that we can use to solve our own problems and make an impact in the world. Obviously, we can't do this on our own. We need God to work through us and in us. We may also need to lean on the body of Christ for help and wisdom. But God will provide for us what we need. Trust in that.   In chapter 5, we meet Naaman, who was an official in the army of Aram.  He had leprosy and heard about a prophet in Samaria who could possibly heal him.  Of course, the prophet was Elisha.  And Elisha does heal him.  But to me, this isn't the most interesting part of the story.  When Naaman goes to leave, he wants to give Elisha all kinds of gold, silver, and expensive gifts.  Elisha declines adamantly.  But Elisha's servant, Gehazi, runs after Naaman and lies in order to get two talents of silver (quite a lot) and some clothing.  But Elisha knows exactly what's happened and when he questions Gehazi, he lies.  As a result, Gehazi ends up with Naaman's leprosy.  God requires integrity.   In chapter 6, we see God continue to do miracles through the prophet Elisha. It appears that Elisha has developed a much more amicable relationship with the king of Israel. When Aram went to war with Israel, Elisha used his prophetic skills to warn the king of Israel when harm was eminent so he could be on guard. Not surprisingly, this frustrated the king of Aram who suspected he had a spy in his ranks. But one of his officers knew that it was in fact Elisha who was providing the king of Israel with the information he needed to protect himself. Thus, the army of Aram is sent to capture Elisha.   The army of Aram surrounds the town of Dothan, where Elisha was living.  Their plan was to capture him. Elisha prays to the Lord, asking for the army to be struck with blindness and God does it. This allows Elisha to lead the army out of Dothan and into Samaria. Once in Samaria, the soldiers' sight returns. The king of Israel asks Elisha if the men should be killed. But Elisha wants to show them mercy, so the king feeds them and sends them back home. Some reflections from today's text: -When in doubt, show mercy. God is a merciful God. We are called to be merciful people. -Err on the side of grace. We've been shown immense grace; let's be sure to demonstrate it to others. -Believe that God is on your side. Your God loves you and wants the best for you. Trust in that.   Matthew 5 is our New Testament passage.  This chapter begins Jesus' teaching called the Sermon on the Mount.  This includes a couple chapters worth of revolutionary teaching.  Jesus probably preached this over a period of days, with thousands of people sitting on the mountainside listening.  The Sermon on the Mount turns things upside down.  Who is blessed?  Those who are poor in spirit, those who mourn, those who are merciful, those who are persecuted.  This would not have been the typical thinking for that time.  They thought if someone was wealthy and happy, then that must mean God's blessing.  Jesus is saying not so fast.  Things are not always what they seem.   The standard for a believer is so much greater than the law.  Adultery isn't simply sex with another, but lusting after someone who isn't your spouse.  Divorce is no longer the acceptable route that the Jews thought it was.  You don't take an eye for an eye, but rather turn the other check.  I kind of imagine all the people with jaws dropped, thinking but how can this be?  How is this even possible?    More tomorrow.   Blessings, Pastor Vicki

The calculation of the 476 years from the 483 (69 x 7) years in Daniel 9:24-26 arises due to the difference between the Jewish lunar calendar and the Gregorian solar calendar.   Jewish (lunar) vs. Gregorian (solar) Calendars   The Jewish calendar is based on a lunar year, which has 360 days per year. (12 months each having 30 days.) The Gregorian calendar (which we use today) is based on a solar year, with 365.25 days per year (including the leap year adjustment). The difference in years come from the conversion of the lunar calendar to the solar calendar as below... Conversion of Years   Calculate the total days in 483 years according to the Jewish calendar:   483 years x 360 days/year = 173,880 days   Convert these days to Gregorian years:   173,880 days ÷ 365.25 days/year = 476 years   So, 483 Jewish lunar years equate to 476 Gregorian solar years. This conversion explains the apparent difference when interpreting the prophecy in the context of our modern calendar.   The distinction between the Jewish lunar calendar (360 days/year) and the Gregorian solar calendar (365.25 days/year) is a historical reality. Understanding that Daniel's prophecy was likely based on a lunar calendar helps reconcile the apparent discrepancy when comparing ancient prophecies to modern timelines.   ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––   Daniel 10 serves as the preface to the final vision Daniel receives, revealing future conflicts and exposing unseen spiritual realities. This chapter is crucial as it pulls back the curtain on a spiritual war that many are unaware of, similar to how one YouTuber exposes the staged parts of influencers' lives. Ephesians 6:12 highlights the ongoing unseen war against the spiritual forces of evil.   "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places." At this point, Daniel is an elderly man who has served under powerful kings and witnessed God's mighty work among them. Despite his experiences, he is troubled by a vision of a great conflict in the future. In mourning, Daniel abstains from pleasures for three weeks, seeking to hear from God.   On the twenty-fourth day, Daniel encounters a supernatural being with a majestic appearance. While his companions flee in fear, Daniel stays and is overwhelmed, falling into a deep sleep. The being, possibly an angel or even the pre-incarnate Jesus, touches and encourages Daniel, calling him "greatly loved" and revealing that his prayers were heard from the start. However, the messenger faced opposition from the "prince of the kingdom of Persia" until Michael, a chief prince, assisted.   This chapter unveils organized spiritual forces influencing political realms. Consider the rank and locations: the prince of Persia and the prince of Greece. The Bible depicts many varied instances of spiritual warfare, such as Elisha's vision of the heavenly forces surrounding Dothan and Jesus' confrontations with demons. Understanding this unseen battle is crucial for Christians to be prepared and equipped for life in this fallen world.   The passage from Ephesians 6:10-20 describes the armor of God and seven essentials for spiritual warfare: Belt of Truth: Represents honesty and integrity, like keeping your pants around your waist, the truth holds everything together.   Breastplate of Righteousness: Symbolizes living a morally upright life and protecting one's heart from evil. Gospel of Peace (Shoes): Refers to being prepared to spread the message of peace and maintaining stability and readiness.   Shield of Faith: Represents strong belief and trust in God, used to deflect spiritual attacks and doubts. Helmet of Salvation: Symbolizes the assurance of salvation and protecting one's mind from spiritual harm. Sword of the Spirit: Represents the Word of God, which is the Bible, used as a weapon against evil. Prayer: constant prayer is essential for spiritual strength and alertness.   Christians are called to be aware of the spiritual battle, stand firm, and fight the good fight knowing they are on the winning team. Despite feeling like at times we take a loss, the ultimate victory is assured in the war!

In this Bible Story, we learn of Naaman's new found love for God and desire to bless the people of God. However, Elisha's servant Gehazi's heart changes for the worse, as he descends into a cycle of greed and treachery. This story is inspired by 2 Kings 5:15-27. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.Today's Bible verse is 2 Kings 5:27 from the King James Version.Episode 134: Israel was at war once again, this time against the King of Aram. However, the God of Israel, who knows all, would inform Elisha of what the King of Aram was planning and Elisha would, in turn, inform his King. This constant outmaneuvering irritated the King of Aram and he sent soldiers to hunt for Elisha. When the army of Aram arrived at Dothan they surrounded Elisha and his servant. But Elisha was unafraid because He could see the armies of heaven surrounding the armies of Aram. So he prayed and God delivered the men of Aram into Samaria, the land of their enemy. But instead of bloodshed, they were given a feast, and God's mercy was revealed to the nations.Hear the Bible come to life as Pastor Jack Graham leads you through the official BibleinaYear.com podcast. Genesis 37:23-24 Now his brothers had gone to graze their father's flocks near Shechem, 13 and Israel said to Joseph, “As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them.” “Very well,” he replied. 14 So he said to him, “Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.” Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron. When Joseph arrived at Shechem, 15 a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, “What are you looking for?” 16 He replied, “I'm looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?” 17 “They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let's go to Dothan.'” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. 18 But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him. 19 “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. 20 “Come now, let's kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we'll see what comes of his dreams.” 21 When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let's not take his life,” he said. 22 “Don't shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don't lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father. 23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe he was wearing— 24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it.   A difficulty may be an opportunity in seed form. Recognize the seed   Genesis 37:5-7 Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. 6 He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: 7 We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”   Psalm 1:1-3 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. 3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.   Reframe the situation    Ephesians 5:15-16 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.   Ripen this season    Proverbs 24:10 If you falter in a time of trouble, how small is your strength!   Reap with a song of joy    Psalm 126:5-6 Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. 6 Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow,  will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.   Redemption is the story    Genesis 3:15 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring (seed) and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.   John 12:23-24 Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.   1 Corinthians 15:20-22 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

Headstorm: https://headstorm.com/AGPILOT: https://headstorm.com/agpilot/Phospholutions: https://www.phospholutions.com/Sentinel Fertigation: https://www.sentinelfertigation.com/I'm a firm believer that in the U.S. our agricultural research and extension programs at our land grant universities truly are national treasures. But of all the outstanding research that's done at these institutions every year, not enough of it seems to get commercialized. Today we highlight two young entrepreneurs that each began their entrepreneurial journeys at their respective campuses, and are today growing real businesses helping farmers with different aspects of nutrient management. Today, you'll hear from Hunter Swisher, founder and CEO of Phospholutions which initially commercialized research done at Penn State. He does a great job talking about some of the major issues with the status quo when it comes to phosphorous. If you haven't looked into it before it's seriously eye opening. Then we'll move west to Nebraska, where Jackson Stensell formed his company Sentinel Fertigation based on research he was doing as a grad student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He also focuses on nutrient management but specifically on irrigated crops. Hunter Swisher currently serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Phospholutions, Inc., which he founded prior to graduating with his B.S. degree in Plant Sciences from Pennsylvania State University. Phospholutions is a sustainable fertilizer company with the mission of improving global phosphate efficiency. Jackson Stansell is the founder and CEO of Sentinel Fertigation. Sentinel Fertigation leverages satellite imagery and geospatial data to empower precision nutrient management - particularly for nitrogen fertigation. Originally from Dothan, Alabama, Jackson did his undergrad at Harvard where he also played football. He was pursuing a masters degree at Nebraska when he turned the research he was doing into a business and decided to put his PhD on hold to commercialize the technology.
