09/27/19 - In this episode, Michael and Craig recap the second half of the TCM Treasures from the Disney Vault lineup for September 2, including The Art of Skiing, Snowball Express, The Hockey Champ, and The Misadventures of Merlin Jones!
A little over a year ago, Vicky, Nolan and Jill were delighted to make the acquaintance of Merlin Jones, the scrambled egghead of Medvale Collage. Now, during the Summer of Sequels, our hosts couldn't be more excited to return to this campus of extremely old students for more of Merlin's wackadoo adventures in Disney's THE MONKEY'S UNCLE. Like all good sequels, this one gives us more of what we crave - more Tommy Kirk (in his final Disney role), more green screen dream sequences, and more of Annette Funicello's foghorn voice; this time accompanied by the dulcet harmonies of The Beach Boys.

It shouldn't really be a surprise that back in the 60s Disney had two multi-film franchises set on college campuses that featured an administration and authority-defying lead, but here we are. But while one franchise featured the boyish charms of cool kid Kurt Russell, THE MISADVENTURES OF MERLIN JONES takes a slightly different tact by having frequent We Want The D favourite Tommy Kirk take on the titular role of the "scrambled egghead." A character who is willing to accuse a judge of diamond theft and murder, and kidnap and hypnotize a chimp without its consent...all in the pursuit of science, we guess? Also featuring the singing "talents" of Annette Funicello, who demonstrates an incredible ability to wait in a car.
Merlin Jones is back and up to the same old crazy experiments! We talk about all of the plot holes, experiment inconsistencies, weird children’s books, and how Phil won the Geography Bee in middle school. Follow along and subscribe at wishpodcast.com
Not about the famous wizard Merlin. Phil’s mistake from Sword in the Stone episode. Difference between adventure and misadventure. Felt like tv show that was smashed into a movie. Teen version of Absent Minded Professor. Is “paper-mation” a thing? Portable brain wave experiment. Using the word to define the word. Reality show of who’s more into the other person. San Francisco old-timey arcade things. Bailing on plans. Library run ins. Judge’s diamond heist. Irresponsible employee. Fake plumber caper. Ordering garbage. Lie detector power. Amanda’s caper in the woods. Game - Mind Reading. Phil and Melissa semi-cheat at Disney Pool Trivia. It’s always seven. Jimmy Fallon Box of Lies and Head Swap. Hypnosis half. Chimp not a monkey. Judge needs writing tips. New authority on hypnosis. Forgetting someone in the car. There’s a little evil in everyone. Glasses without lenses. Tommy Kirk’s Disney firing. People watching and making up stories. Ron Swanson as Duke Silver. Next episode - The Three Lives of Thomasina.
First guest on the Oregon side - Jim Paradis. There’s only fog in California. Kevin Corcoran’s final movie. Another waste of a DVD. Who knew that credit cards were a thing in this time. The worst employee causes problem. Never open a tiger cage. Run away, don’t just watch. Incorrect logic to connect the dots. A man in a suit who is there. Supply and demand. Of all the people to get killed, he was the right one. Wonderful World of Disney. Dad brings up the same topic again like Melissa from Incredible Journey. Hot potato strategy and Veep. King of the Jungle. Amazon Echo Dot - Alexa jumps into the conversation. Useless pair’s decision making. Dad misses the whole fog plot. Everyone is hunting for things (except the tiger). Save the tiger song. Game - Weird Protests. If you’re going to protest, have good signage. Julie misses the point. Buy a steak but not for yourself. Dad throwing a mattress on top of Melissa. Annoying children in restaurants. Only in it for the photos. They don’t listen to the expert. Phil and Amanda root against Julie. She had it coming, she only had herself to blame. Mangled shoulder but only one tissue. Good protests can help. Not even trivia - just fun facts. Next episode - The Misadventures of Merlin Jones
Thanks to a unique case of electromagnetism (or some such), we've been gifted temporarily with the ability to read your thoughts, friend. And so we promise, this episode is completely April Fools Day prank-free. Pinky swear! Unfortunately, in some ways, Gabe and Josh got pranked this week by their choice of film, the 1964 comedy The Misadventures of Merlin Jones, which is all about a nerdy college kid being able to read people's thoughts! Until...he can't. Yes, this movie is surprising, but in a lot of the wrong ways. Even more so, Gabe's presumption that this movie would be monkey-heavy may have been equally misguided! What mysteries await? What happened in this movie that bothered Gabe so much that he cracked open his Sherlock Holmes costume to solve a cold case? Find out in the new show!
This week the DFPP team assists a fellow man of science with his experiments when they learn that the mysteries of man are best kept locked inside their heads or else things just end up in peach pits 1964 comedy The Misadventures of Merlin Jones. Listen, download, etc. Show notes: IMDb Wikipedia (Wikia) Official Site Trailer … Continue reading "DFPP 187 – The Misadventures of Merlin Jones"
