Gunsmoke is an American radio and television Western drama series created by director Norman Macdonnell and writer John Meston. The stories take place in and around Dodge City, Kansas, during the settlement of the American West. The central character is lawman Marshal Matt Dillon, played by William Conrad on radio and James Arness on television. When aired in the United Kingdom, the television series was initially titled Gun Law, later reverting to Gunsmoke. The radio series ran from 1952 to 1961. John Dunning wrote that among radio drama enthusiasts, "Gunsmoke is routinely placed among the best shows of any kind and any time." The television series ran for 20 seasons from 1955 to 1975 and lasted for 635 episodes. At the end of its run in 1975, Los Angeles Times columnist Cecil Smith wrote: "Gunsmoke was the dramatization of the American epic legend of the west. Our own Iliad and Odyssey, created from standard elements of the dime novel and the pulp Western as romanticized by Buntline, Harte, and Twain. It was ever the stuff of legend." Radio series (1952–1961) In the late 1940s, CBS chairman William S. Paley, a fan of the Philip Marlowe radio series, asked his programming chief, Hubell Robinson, to develop a hard-boiled Western series, a show about a "Philip Marlowe of the Old West". Robinson instructed his West Coast CBS Vice President, Harry Ackerman, who had developed the Philip Marlowe series, to take on the task. Ackerman and his scriptwriters, Mort Fine and David Friedkin, created an audition script called "Mark Dillon Goes to Gouge Eye'' based on one of their Michael Shayne radio scripts, "The Case of the Crooked Wheel'' from the summer of 1948. Two versions were recorded. The first, recorded in June 1949, was very much like a hardboiled detective series and starred Michael Rye (credited as Rye Billsbury) as Dillon; the second, recorded in July 1949, starred Straight Arrow actor Howard Culver in a more Western, lighter version of the same script. CBS liked the Culver version better, and Ackerman was told to proceed. A complication arose, though; Culver's contract as the star of Straight Arrow would not allow him to do another Western series. The project was shelved for three years, when producer Norman Macdonnell and writer John Meston discovered it while creating an adult Western series of their own. Macdonnell and Meston wanted to create a radio Western for adults, in contrast to the prevailing juvenile fare such as The Lone Ranger and The Cisco Kid. Gunsmoke was set in Dodge City, Kansas, during the thriving cattle days of the 1870s.

As Paul nears the end of his third major missionary trip, it is time to head home. Instead of heading straight to Antioch, he plans to go to Jerusalem first. The story helps us see that Paul never travels alone. He has a crew of people who are serving with him, representing the churches he has visited, and doing the work of ministry together. During his travels, Paul has been collecting what has become a significant sum of money, given by individuals in the churches to support their suffering brothers and sisters in Jerusalem. The names mentioned are traveling with Paul to protect, provide accountability, and deliver these funds to Jerusalem. It is clear that there is no Lone Ranger mentality with Paul. In every situation there is a team of people doing ministry and mission together. This includes when Paul preaches on and on… and a teenager falls asleep and out of a window during the preaching.

In this episode, Pastor Harris will continue his sermon series entitled, “Impediments to Personal Success.” In this series, he is pointed out how the great people of faith guaranteed their successes by their attitudes. Pastor Harris will be addressing what he calls a Lone Ranger mentality, one he considers to be a great impediment to succeeding. So, in this message Pastor Harris will focus on a man who exemplifies a totally different attitude toward life, a man Pastor refers to as being “a team player.” This man is known to us as Nehemiah. From ancient times, the cities located in the Middle East were surrounded by stone walls with gates erected for the protection of the people. The important men of each city would gather at these gates to conduct the business of the city, share important information, or just pass the time of day. Unfortunately, the walls, gates, and the streets of the city of Jerusalem had been totally destroyed by King Nebuchadnezzar the Great in the year 586 BC. There was no place to meet. When Nehemiah was told of the state of the Holy City he immediately asked permission to rebuild its walls. As he was leaving Babylon, he met some Arab men who mocked him for what he was about to do. Nehemiah 2:20 records his statement, which stands even today as a testament to who has the right to the city known as Jerusalem: Nehemiah rights this:“I answered them by saying, ‘The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding, but as for you, you have no share in Jerusalem or any claim or historic right to it.'”The key to this statement is the pronouns. Nehemiah always spoke of “we,” not “me.” He was no Lone Ranger; he was a team player, as we shall see in this message.
