Two art students in Italy (Annette Funicello & Tommy Kirk) stumble upon a counterfeit painting ring. Originally aired on the "The Magical World of Disney" TV program.
To celebrate the New Year, we decided to release a previously unreleased podcast episode from our archives. This was the first episode for a "Bikini Beach Party" podcast series, which we ultimately axed in favour of "Potential Spoilers". The podcast would have reviewed a number of movies from the "beach party" film genre from the 60's, a genre that has not stood the test of time. In this episode, Matty D and Kieran watch 1965's "Village of the Giants", starring Tommy Kirk, Charla Doherty, Beau Bridges, and a very young Ron Howard. The movie follows a group of teens who eat a goo that turns them into giants, and they use their newfound size to take over a small town, with plenty of dancing and booby rides.
This week we find the origin of Flubber and we are left no closer to finding out ANYTHING about it. A clearly older Fred MacMurray woos Nancy Olson or...forgets to? Either way it's awkwardness that can only be saved by non-sentient flying rubber. And for some reason Tommy Kirk is a villian...but with no explanation as to how he becomes fred's closest confidant in the sequel? Why does Flubber only leave us with questions? Help us unlock them this week.
Our Dorothy McGuire episode this week is guaranteed to give you mood whiplash. We begin with Disney classic and Boomer phenomenon Old Yeller (1957), the most hellish depiction of the war of all against all in nature we've seen since King Kong, with a moving central performance by Tommy Kirk as a boy ungracefully slouching toward manhood with the indispensable assistance of a good dog and a seraphic mother (McGuire). After imbibing its gnostic wisdom, we turn to the very different problems facing The Remarkable Mr. Pennypacker (1959), a comedy about an early 20th century progressive businessman who adopts bigamy as part of his forward-thinking program but forgets to tell his wife (McGuire). McGuire's wife and mother roles continue to give her a wide range of things to play, while drawing on her cool efficiency in a crisis - whether that's a dog who's been torn up by hogs or a husband with a secret second family. Sean and Brad review the 1961 classic The Absent-Minded Professor. They talk about what flubber sounds like, what Brad's dunks, when he could dunk, looked like (hint: it looked like a white guy from 1961), and about 25 different parts of the basketball scene. Is this one of the best basketball scenes in cinema? We think it might be.Next episode: Against the RopesAgainst the Ropes is streaming on the Pluto streaming service, but if you don't want to watch 25 ads about Otezla clearing your eczema, go borrow it from your local library.Support the showTwitter: @slowpitchcastInstagram: @slowpitchpodcastEmail: slowpitchthepodcast@gmail.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/slowpitchpodcastPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/slowpitch
Mousetalgia's Best Ear Ever No. 36: MouseCon; Disneyland Paris's crisis response from Nov. 23, 2022 Contact us at comments@mousetalgia.com. This week, Mousetalgia takes you behind the scenes at MouseCon 2015, the first annual Northern California Disney fan convention. We share some exclusive conversations with the special guests - Tommy Kirk on Walt Disney, Floyd Norman on WED and the origins of the Haunted Mansion, and C. Andrew Nelson on putting on the mask of Sith Lord Vader - plus we collect some thoughts from fans at the convention. Then, Dave and Becky report on Disneyland Paris, and offer their first-hand account of Disney's response to the recent terror crisis, and how the cast members and guests responded to the confusing, chaotic events. We also present part one of Mousetalgia's review of the Disneyland Paris resort by discussing the various hotels and lodging options available, and next week we'll follow up with a report on the attractions, dining, and holiday celebrations at the resort. Plus - a surprising Paris/Orlando/Anaheim price comparison, and a listener report from a preview screening of The Good Dinosaur on the Pixar campus.
This week it's The Monkey's Uncle Part One complete with questionable science, Tommy Kirk getting down with blondes, and Midvale College where weird shit always happens....and for some reason they have a judge.
Tommy Kirk was a classic Disney child actor, starring in dozens of films and making big money for the studio. But as he grew older, his celebrity status waned until the fateful day when he was cast aside by the industry he sacrificed his childhood for. BRRRRIIIIIIIINNNNGGG!!! Class is in session for a couple of daft pupils! That's right, it's your boys Tim Q and Deefy boldly going where tons of people have gone before. Namely, a mediocre movie from 1961, The Absent-Minded Professor! If you've been needing that sweet sweet Tommy Kirk fix, look no further. Because guess what? He's in this! So's the saggier-faced analog of Andy Griffith, the lovable (maybe just likeable?) Fred McMurray! It's not Robin Williams, but this is the origin of the 1998 remake of Flubber. It's... fine. I guess. But who better to lead you through a sea of mediocre scientific pseudo jargon than a couple of seasoned Diz vets armed to the teeth with Malort? Nobody, says I! Sit back and lube up, cause we're about to flub the shit outta you!
It's very apt that our 360th episode is for a Disney sequel that is basically a full-circle repeat of the original film. Because SON OF FLUBBER is essentially a beat-for-beat recreation of the original Absent-Minded Professor, with some cosmetic changes (eg, football instead of basketball). So forgive our hosts if they wind up talking about anything else, including fond farewells to four big names from Disney's history - Tommy Kirk, Fred MacMurray, Keenan Wynn and director Robert Stevenson.

We've been foaming at the mouth to get this one out! Plussin' and Cussin' presents a Deefless and whiskey-fueled romp through the wild Texas frontier of Santa Clarita, California with Kentucky's native son, Kevin Corcoran. We bare our canine incisors and rip into the meaty flesh of a film that traumatized an entire generation of Boomers, 1957's Old Yeller. Let's get grit and grime smeared all over our feral faces as we discover what you call a group of pigs and why Jesus Christ hated them so much, as well as why you should maybe reconsider going into a Burbank swimming pool with Tommy Kirk. PnC's Dog Days of 2022 continues!
Fred MacMurray stars in this Disney live-action classic about a college professor who creates a new substance called "Flubber" (flying rubber). Co-starring Keenan Wynn, Nancy Olson, and Tommy Kirk.

There's a feeling of familiarity in this week's episode of We Want The D. It could be, of course, all of the familiar Disney faces in THE ABSENT-MINDED PROFESSOR - our favourite old dad Fred MacMurray (though playing an old bachelor this time); our favourite scrambled egghead Tommy Kirk (though playing the popular jock this time); our favourite villain from the Herbie franchise Alonzo Hawk (who we compare to popular Greater Toronto Area personality Russell Oliver). But then again, it could just be all the bouncing from the flubber making our hosts a little disoriented.

Kevin Corcoran as younger son “Moochie”, and Tommy Kirk as the lead, “Wilby”. Wilby Daniels is an awkward teenage inventor that seems to be capable of financing his best friend “Buzz”’s romantic life, but has not been able to date himself. He wants to change this when he and Buzz both catch sight of their new French neighbor Francesca, - Francesca needs to go to the local museum, so Buzz and Wilby trip over themselves to take her. While at the museum, they split up, and Wilby runs into Dr. Plumcutt, a former customer on his paper route. Dr. Plumcutt tells Wilby all about the Borgia family, their sinister reputation, and their secret dog magic. Afterward, Wilby knocks over a display of antique jewelry, only to realize that he has stolen, ahem, “acquired” a Borgia ring and smuggled it out of the museum in the cuff of his pants. Wilby reads the inscription on the ring aloud and inadvertently turns himself into a dog - which happens to be identical to Francesca’s “Bratislavan sheepdog”, Chiffon. Wilby returns to Dr. Plumcutt at the museum, who takes talking to a dog in impressive stride, and basically is told there isn’t anything he can do except perhaps an act of bravery to break the curse. Wilby switches uncontrollably back and forth between dog and boy, and manages to cause mayhem at a dance and discover a spy ring trying to steal government secrets led by none other than Francesca’s adoptive father. Through another long series of events, and the police refusing to listen to the Daniels family about the spies, and Wilby, in dog form, steals Buzz’s car and leads the police to the harbor, where the spies are escaping with Francesca in tow. Wilby tries to board the boat himself to stop them, but Francesca is knocked into the water and dog-Wilby leaps into the water and drags her to safety, breaking the curse (although no one actually realizes it, and all credit is given to Chiffon). Wilby’s dog-hating father is also commended for his role in the discovery of the spy ring, and is photographed with Chiffon for the paper - for an article about Chiffon being given a medal for bravery. ● Trivia○ The initial release of The Shaggy Dog grossed more than $9 million on a budget of less than $1 million – an almost unprecedented return on a film investment, making it more profitable than Ben-Hur, released the same year.○ This movie has been remade a few times - a 1994 TV version featuring Scott Weinger and Ed Begley Jr, which kept the same general story intact, and the aforementioned 2006 horror movie version featuring Tim Allen○ “Shaggy” was actually an Old English Sheepdog named Sam - he was a pet, and was recommended for the role by his obedience trainer, William Koehler, who trained many animals for Disney movies, including The Incredible Journey, That Darn Cat, and The Ugly Dachshund.○ Sam was prepared for the car chase scene by using rubber bands to keep his hair out of his eyes and running him around in a wheel barrow, gradually increasing the intensity and speed as he got comfortable with the situation. A custom seat was made for Sam, with fur-covered “mittens” attached to the steering wheel, and a matching fur-covered seatbelt that blended in with his body.○ Some of the stunts, such as jumping off of the boat were done by a child or a little person in a sheepdog suit. (The child was Johnny Kirk, Tommy Kirk’s little brother)○ Sam accidentally stepped onto Tim Considine’s eye during filming, and scratched it.● Segment: News/Announcements “The Newsies Banner”○ Not a real surprise, but Disney release windows are not expected to vary after the release of Disney+○ Disney released a TON of content that is going to be available on Disney+○ Maleficent: Mistress of Evil scheduled for release on October 18, 2019● Segment: Whosits and Whatsits Galore○ Disney Trivia● Segment: Top 4 Ranking “Let’s get down to business” ○ Top 4 Most Powerful Mages○ 1. A little over a year ago, Vicky, Nolan and Jill were delighted to make the acquaintance of Merlin Jones, the scrambled egghead of Medvale Collage. Now, during the Summer of Sequels, our hosts couldn't be more excited to return to this campus of extremely old students for more of Merlin's wackadoo adventures in Disney's THE MONKEY'S UNCLE. Like all good sequels, this one gives us more of what we crave - more Tommy Kirk (in his final Disney role), more green screen dream sequences, and more of Annette Funicello's foghorn voice; this time accompanied by the dulcet harmonies of The Beach Boys.
The Shaggy Dog from 1959 has the distinction of being first live-action movie released by Disney. We cover the making of the film starring Fred MacMurray, Tommy Kirk, Kevin Corcoran, Annette Funicello, and Tim Considine.

Alaina picks up from where a recent episode left off, and continues the story of Disney's live-action productions through the 1960s. We spend our time following the lives and careers of recurring talent, as well as the films themselves and the trends they set. How many films did it take to pay for the enduring classics? It shouldn't really be a surprise that back in the 60s Disney had two multi-film franchises set on college campuses that featured an administration and authority-defying lead, but here we are. But while one franchise featured the boyish charms of cool kid Kurt Russell, THE MISADVENTURES OF MERLIN JONES takes a slightly different tact by having frequent We Want The D favourite Tommy Kirk take on the titular role of the "scrambled egghead." A character who is willing to accuse a judge of diamond theft and murder, and kidnap and hypnotize a chimp without its consent...all in the pursuit of science, we guess? Also featuring the singing "talents" of Annette Funicello, who demonstrates an incredible ability to wait in a car.
Invasion of the Remake is returning to the Wonderful World of Disney with the comedy, family favorite The Absent Minded Professor (1961) and the remake Flubber (1997). The Absent Minded Professor stars Walt Disney legend Fred MacMurray in one of his most memorable roles alongside Nancy Olson, Keenan Wyn, Tommy Kirk, Elliott Reid and Director Robert (Old Yeller) Stevenson. With a line up like that the remake had to really step up. Bringing in legendary screenwriter John Hughes and Director Les (Blue Streak) Mayfield was a good start. But the inclusion of comedy legend Robin Williams with Marcia Gay Harden, Christopher McDonald, Ted Levine, Clancy Brown, Raymond J. Barry, and Wil Wheaton seems like a formula for success. But is it? This week we look at the chemistry of these films and see whose Flubber has the most bounce. So buckle up into your flying cars and listen to this week's episode The Absent Minded Professor versus Flubber! Friends, as we wade slowly through the dog days of summer, there's really no better time to talk about Disney's first live-action comedy feature on a new episode of Mousterpiece Cinema. That, of course, would be the 1959 mix-'em-up comedy The Shaggy Dog! Josh and Scott hunker down to talk about a movie that looks like it's going to be all about a grumpy mailman and his grudge against canines right before it turns into a wacky story about two rival teenagers fighting over a pretty foreign exchange student. Is The Shaggy Dog as crazy as the live-action comedies of the 1960s and 1970s from Disney? Was it a mistake to focus on Tommy Kirk's character? Are Josh and Scott "feelin' sore"? Listen to the show to find out!
One of the more bizarre things Disney is beloved for is making people really really upset. People fondly remember the childhood trauma they suffered when Bambi's mother is shot, the fear the felt when the Evil Queen transformed into the Old Hag, and the sorrow when Mufasa is trampled by wildebeests. This week on We Want The D; Vicky, Nolan and Jill are talking about OLD YELLER, a movie that has been traumatizing its audiences for years, and not just because the movie ends with a beloved, loyal pet and companion being shot in the face while growling like a hellbeast. No, in modern times Old Yeller is perhaps even more traumatizing thanks to that classic Disney tendency for cruelty to animals. From a dog vs hog fight that our hosts can't figure out how they'd fake to the most distressing noises you'll ever hear a bovine make, this movie is not one for the animal lovers. Add in the distressing behind-the-scenes story of Tommy Kirk's rise and fall (and happily rise again) at Disney and it's a wonder our hosts' usual tears of laughter weren't tears of sorrow by the end of this one.

Hey, bros! Get ready for a full-on Brodown Hoedown on this week's Bro-sterpiece--OK, fine, Mousterpiece Cinema. This week, your top bros Josh and Gabe are getting ready to go back to college to talk about the important things about higher learning: beer, football, frat parties, and--and--AND TWINS! Maybe we're exaggerating a wee bit, but boy oh boy, does this week's movie, the 1965 film The Monkey's Uncle, feel super bro-y and misogynistic. It's so hard to avoid that Josh and Gabe go deep on this one, musing on the conservative streak in old-school Disney films, the way Walt Disney and his executives treated lead actor Tommy Kirk after his homosexuality became a flashpoint of controversy, and whether NCAA football players should be paid. Plus, Gabe brings back his Serial-esque cold-case podcast! And a bit of swearing! And Josh does a Beach Boys impression! No more talk--get to listening!
