Jane Goodall, renowned primatologist, conservationist, and humanitarian, died on October 1 at the age of 91. Goodall was born in London in 1934, and her curiosity about the natural world led her to the forests of Gombe, Tanzania, where she made groundbreaking observations of chimpanzee behavior, including tool use. Her research challenged the accepted scientific perceptions of our closest relatives.Host Ira Flatow shares his memories of Dr. Goodall, including an interview from 2002 in which she discussed her life and work.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. As a girl in England, Jane Goodall dreamed of traveling to Africa to study animals in the wild. In 1960, that dream brought her to Tanzania, to observe the wild chimpanzees at Gombe Stream Park. As she describes in this episode, other scientists did not believe that a young woman could survive alone in the bush, but Jane Goodall did more than survive. Her work revolutionized the field of primatology. She was the first to document chimpanzees making and using tools, an activity that had been thought exclusively humans. Over the years she also witnessed cooperative hunting and altruism, but also brutality and even warfare among chimps. Her work, the longest continuous field study of any living creature, has given us deep insights into the evolution of our own species. Since the 1980's, she has devoted herself single-mindedly to educating the public worldwide about the connections between animal welfare, the environment, and human progress. Jane Goodall, the renowned conservationist and pioneer of groundbreaking chimpanzee field research, has died of natural causes at the age of 91.Jane lived an utterly remarkable life, and her discoveries revolutionised science. She was only 26 years old when she first visited Tanzania to begin her research on chimpanzees in the wildBefore Jane went to Africa we knew very little about chimpanzees, despite the fact that they're our closest cousins. It's only because of Jane's research and observations that we now know they sometimes eat meat, they make tools, they laugh, they are curious about the world around them, they love, they mourn, and sometimes, they are capable of spectacular violence. You can read more about The Jane Goodall Institute online. This episode of Conversations explores zoology, biology, evolution, Africa, exploration, conservation, chimpanzees, apes, monkeys, Kenya, Tanzania, David Attenborough, Dame Jane, mother earth, protecting our environment, habitats, UN Messenger of Peace, raising awareness, threats to wildlife, sustainable relationship between people, animals and the natural world, celebrity death. To binge even more great episodes of the Conversations podcast with Richard Fidler and Sarah Kanowski go the ABC listen app (Australia) or wherever you get your podcasts. Ever wonder why you make financial decisions that go against your better judgment? This episode delves into The Chimp Paradox, a powerful psychological model by Dr. Steve Peters that explains the constant tug-of-war between your emotional "chimp" brain and your rational "human" brain. We'll explore how this internal conflict often leads to impulsive spending and financial anxiety, and, more importantly, equip you with actionable strategies to "box your chimp" and make logical, confident choices with your money. Are humans really 98% chimp—or is that just evolutionary hype dressed up as science? The human-chimp DNA comparison has been used for decades to argue that we're nothing more than highly evolved primates. But what if the numbers don't tell the full story? Join us for a mind-blowing conversation with Dr. Jeffrey Tomkins, a geneticist and respected creation scientist with a Ph.D. in genetics from Clemson University. With cutting-edge research and decades of experience, Dr. Tomkins dismantles the popular myth of near-identical DNA and reveals the deeper genetic distinctions that point not to common ancestry, but to common design. This isn't just about genes—it's about identity, origins, and the narrative that defines humanity. Are we accidental cousins of chimps… or uniquely created in the image of God? Don't miss this episode—it may change the way you see yourself. Weird History: The Unexpected and Untold Chronicles of History
From iconic films like The Fly and The Island of Dr. Moreau to modern classics such as Splice or Dog Man, audiences are captivated by the idea of human-animal hybrids. While these plots are great for sci-fi, real historical events reveal a darker side. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, scientific curiosity led some to consider creating 'monkey men,' with Joseph Stalin pushing the boundaries of ethics. In this special replay episode — the top 3 most downloaded of all time — I'm again joined by Stuart McGuire as we explore The Chimp Paradox by Professor Steve Peters. This book provides a simple yet powerful model for understanding how our brain works — and how it often works against us if we're not aware of it. Whether in meetings, under pressure, or dealing with self-doubt, understanding your inner “chimp” can help you manage emotions, lead with clarity, and avoid the traps that keep so many statisticians and scientists stuck. This episode remains a favorite because it strikes at the core of how we think, react, and lead — especially in high-stakes scientific and business environments.

Our story tonight is called The Evening of the 4th, and it's a story about a day-long event that ends with a picnic and a concert on the grass. It's also about hand pies and potato salad, a busy kitchen full of aproned volunteers and the sound of the instruments tuning up on the patio. Thyme and lemon zest, and the satisfaction of sharing good times with your neighbors. • Subscribe to our Premium channel. The first month is on us.
