Most of us could look at a decades-old yearbook and recognize many of the faces of our former classmates -- but humans aren't the only ones with this remarkable ability. Laura Simone Lewis, PhD, of the University of California, Santa Barbara, discusses her research on the long-term social memories of chimpanzees and bonobos, including a bonobo who remembered family members after 26 years apart. She explains how these great apes navigate their social worlds and what they can teach us about the evolution of our own social cognition. Learn more about your ad choices. Would you like some genetics in your politics? The Origin of Politics: How Evolution and Ideology Shape the Fate of Nations – Social Disintegration, Birth Rates, and the Path to Extinction By: Nicholas Wade Published: 2025 256 Pages Briefly, what is this book about? Wade offers up an evolutionary psychology account of how to make politics actually function; how, when you try to disconnect politics and the exercise of power from core human nature, as shaped by evolution, things go off the rails.  What authorial biases should I be aware of? Nicholas Wade worked as a science writer for the NYT for 30 years. For the bulk of those years he was the science and health editor. He left the paper in 2012 and in 2014 he published A Troublesome Inheritance: Genes, Race and Human History. The book argued that human evolution is ongoing and that it has been "recent, copious, and regional". The regional part got him "cancelled" or at least it attracted a lot of negative attention, since it implied that differing national outcomes might be partly genetic in nature rather than wholly the result of chance, culture, or colonization.  Who should read this book? If you're looking for a strong pushback against blank-slateism along with a defense of the traditional nation-state (and of tradition in general). Or if you're looking for another reason to worry about decreasing fertility.  What does the book have to say about the future? The aforementioned fertility decline looms large in his warnings about the future, but as I mentioned he also warns about any policy that tries to exercise power in ignorance of evolutionary drives. One of the major drives is tribalism and immigration directly conflicts with that instinct. All of this points to the potential for a demographically declining society with lots of disorder.  Specific thoughts: Children are the ultimate civilizational scorecard

Synopsis Primate is about a college student named Lucy who comes home to her family house in Hawiia, along with a few of her friends. But this is no ordinary house, for it is home to humans and apes alike. Lucy's father owns a pet/member of the family named Ben who is a fully grown chimpanzee. Im sure without explaining anymore you can already tell where this is going. When her father leaves for an important book signing, Lucy and her friends are left alone as Ben starts to act weirder and weirder, showing signs of rabies. By the time her father comes home, their fate may already be sealed.  Review of Primate The set up for Primate is very basic and has been done time and time again using various animals. If you’ll recall movies like the Shallows, or Crawl, then you know all about Primate. But what separates this movie from the others is the many different ways chimpanzees can kill you. With a shark, you basically got one move. They bite. Chimps on the other hand bite, beat, rip and tear, and you can be sure to see all of that here. And it is every bit as horrifying as you can imagine. Within the first 5 minutes of the movie I was fully bought in, and honestly felt extremely tense throughout the entire film. Chimps are terrifying, but they also fit in this weird slot of uncanny valley where they can also be extremely cute and hilarious. I don't think seeing a chimpanzee on screen with ever cease to amaze me, and I am totally here for it if they want to make a Primate 2 and 3. This movie had me genuinely scared. That being said, it is also super predictable. Its a paint by numbers movie where the main color is blood red. Which is fun, but not super thought provoking. Score 7/10

“Y'all don't have to make everything about everything…”   Time has a strange way of playing with the mind and blurring perceptions. For example, 24 years is effectively a quarter of a century, and while that sounds like a pretty vast swath of time, in reality it is merely a tiny speck in the grand scheme of the endless universe. To put it another way, as of the date of this episode in 2025, it has been the same amount of time (24 years) since 2001, which included the launch of Wikipedia, the September 11th attacks, and the very first iPod by Apple.   In keeping with the relativity of time, NATIVITY IN BLACK: A TRIBUTE TO BLACK SABBATH was released way back in 1994, a whopping 24 years after the groundbreaking eponymous debut from Birmingham's founding fathers of metal. At that time, in the early 90's, it seemed as if eons of time had elapsed from the release of Sabbath's debut until the release of this tribute honoring the classic Ozzy era of Sabbath from the 1970's and their collective contributions to the heavy metal canon.    To take the concept of time just a step further, Black Sabbath recently played their final concert (Back To The Beginning) 55 years after the release of their debut album, and it has now been 31 years (as of the date of this episode, in 2025) since the NATIVITY IN BLACK compilation was unleashed upon the metal world, featuring some real bangers from metal bands spanning a variety of subgenres that still holds up to this day.   Discover the proper pronunciation of names which you have been saying the wrong way you're entire life, including “Schuldiner, Peart, and chimpanzee”, hear our latest movie pitch for Rob Zombie, and remember the reason for feeling uneasy when you are unable to “touch bottom” after you JOIN US as we dive in to the first compilation of Black Sabbath covers that was cheekily named after Bill Ward's beard with NATIVITY IN BLACK: A TRIBUTE TO BLACK SABBATH. Click here to try it out!In this week's episode we dive into Better Man, Michael Gracey's glossy Robbie Williams biopic — the one where Robbie is portrayed as a CGI chimp. Yes, really. It's a bold swing that reframes a familiar music-biopic arc with unexpected bite: boy-band manufacture, burnout, reinvention, and the messy business of becoming “Robbie” when “Robert” is still in the room. What we coverThe Big Swing: Why the CGI chimp isn't a gimmick for giggles but a visual metaphor for the “performing monkey” persona Robbie built to survive fame — and why that works (or doesn't) for each of us.Factory Settings: From Nigel & Gary's control of Take That to the economics of who actually got paid, and the cost of being the “likeable one” without songwriting credits.Oasis Years & Networth Fever: The hang-around era, the envy, the one-upmanship, and the obsession with conquering Knebworth as validation.Dad, Demons & Dopamine: Anxiety, addiction, and that lifelong pursuit of approval — including the film's sweetest and saddest notes with Nan, and the uneasy father-son bookends.Does the Film Sing? Staging, choreography, and why set-pieces like “Rock DJ” land; what's rushed (Oasis/Nicole), what's caricature (sorry, Gary), and where the emotional math still doesn't balance.Should you watch the film — and our take on it?Short answer: yes to our episode (obviously), and qualified yes to the movie. One of us calls the chimp choice inspired, one calls it clever but not essential, and one is just happy it's never dull. If you like spirited disagreement with actual reasons, you're in the right feed.“It's every music-biopic cliché — but with a CGI chimp doing the coke. Somehow, that makes it feel new.”

We dive into James Marsh's Project Nim—the wild “let's raise a chimp as a human” saga aimed at dunking on Noam/“Nim” Chomsky and proving apes can master language. What we actually get: sex-commune vibes, bad science, worse ethics, and one heartbreakingly charismatic chimp shunted between indulgent “parents,” media circuses, and grim laboratories. We talk:Language vs mimicry: 120+ signs learned…or just expert begging? The ‘parents': breast-feeding (!) and a roll-call of under-qualified carers. The professor: comb-over, cameras, and conclusions that nuke the funding.LEMSIP hell: cages, needles, PR panic—and the stoner saint Bob who actually cares.Violence & inevitability: cute baby ➝ teen primate with seven-men strength.Ethics, then and now: where the line is (and how far they trampled past it).Bits that floored usThe throwaway “I breastfed him.”Documenting Nim's Oedipal…metrics.A “sanctuary” with horses and one lonely chimp.A finale that's “interesting,” not “enjoyable.”Verdict (Bad Dads split decision)Fascinating, infuriating, essential—a five-alarm case study in how not to do science. As a girl in England, Jane Goodall dreamed of traveling to Africa to study animals in the wild.  In 1960, that dream brought her to Tanzania, to observe the wild chimpanzees at Gombe Stream Park. As she describes in this episode, other scientists did not believe that a young woman could survive alone in the bush, but Jane Goodall did more than survive. Her work revolutionized the field of primatology.  She was the first to document chimpanzees making and using tools, an activity that had been thought exclusively humans. Over the years she also witnessed cooperative hunting and altruism, but also brutality and even warfare among chimps. Her work, the longest continuous field study of any living creature, has given us deep insights into the evolution of our own species.  Since the 1980's, she has devoted herself single-mindedly to educating the public worldwide about the connections between animal welfare, the environment, and human progress.  (c ) American Academy of Achievement 2017
