The Elevators' first two albums (Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators and Easter Everywhere, released, respectively, in 1966 and '67) are essential classics whose far-reaching influence transcends genre boundaries. Following a nightmarish '70s mental-hospital stint that reportedly had a devastating long-term effect on his mental health, Erickson's subsequent work revealed a singularly brilliant songwriter and performer whose talent was no less impressive for the fact that he was singing about zombies, vampires and aliens. Indeed, the demons that abound in Roky's songs are all-too-real reflections of his own troubled psyche, and the combination of the artist's oddly poetic lyrical constructions and his bracing banshee wail makes it clear, as it wasn't always, that he's not kidding. The Elevators fell apart in the late '60s, when Erickson began a three-year stretch in a state mental institution to avoid criminal prosecution on a drug charge. He didn't return to recording until the second half of the '70s, with a string of one-off singles and the four-song Sponge-label EP (reissued in 1988 as Two Headed Dog). Three of the EP's numbers were re-recorded for the 1980 CBS UK LP (the title of which is actually five unpronounceable ideograms). Roky Erickson and the Aliens is an excellent manifestation of his post-Elevators persona, expressing dark dilemmas through creepy horror-movie imagery. Roky sings such offbeat gems as “I Walked with a Zombie” and “Creature With the Atom Brain” in a tremulous voice that insists he's telling the truth — or at least believes he is. Former Creedence Clearwater bassist Stu Cook turned in an excellent production job, bringing the hard electric guitars (and Bill Miller's electric autoharp) into a sharp focus that underscores Roky's excitable state. Erickson and band seem less unstable than the drug-crazed Elevators (best remembered for “You're Gonna Miss Me”), but just barely.

On this episode of the SeventySix Capital Sports Leadership Show, Wayne Kimmel interviewed the President and CEO of the American Gaming Association, Bill Miller. Miller is the President and CEO of the American Gaming Association (AGA), which represents the $329 billion U.S. casino industry. Since joining the AGA in 2019, Miller has elevated the association's influence in Washington, advanced key industry priorities, and deepened member engagement. In 2019, the American Gaming Association (AGA) launched the "Have A Game Plan" campaign to educate sports fans about the principles of responsible sports betting. This campaign emphasizes key guidelines, including setting a budget and adhering to it, keeping betting a social activity, understanding the odds, and placing bets with trusted, regulated operators. In 2021, SeventySix Capital became the first investment firm to join the initiative. Most notably, under Miller's leadership, the AGA navigated the gaming industry through the COVID-19 pandemic. He led the advocacy effort that united AGA members and the broader gaming industry, secured unprecedented federal relief and created a favorable policy landscape for gaming's remarkable recovery. He has advanced efforts to strengthen the gaming industry's commitment to responsibility, build a sustainable legal sports betting market, accelerate casino payments modernization, diminish the illegal gambling market, and initiate industry-wide efforts on workforce development and sustainability. Miller has also reinvigorated the Global Gaming Expo, the gaming industry's premier tradeshow. Miller has more than three decades of experience on Capitol Hill and representing business interests in Washington, D.C. Prior to joining the AGA, Miller served as the top lobbyist at Business Roundtable, the association of chief executive officers of America's leading companies. During his tenure, he led consequential lobbying efforts to pass the landmark 2017 tax reform legislation and usher in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Miller also spent time as a partner at international corporate communications firm Brunswick, providing strategic counsel to several U.S. and international corporations. At the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Miller served as senior vice president and national political director. Miller drove the Chamber's political affairs and federal lobbying efforts for more than a decade, where he created a favorable policy environment for the U.S. business community to thrive. Early in his career, Miller served as chief of staff and campaign manager for Representative Constance A. Morella (MD-8), overseeing the Congresswoman's legislative and political agenda. Miller is recognized as an influential leader in Washington, including being named to Washingtonian magazine's Most Influential People List (2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024) and The Hill's Top Lobbyists (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024). Miller is a member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's C100, and he also sits on the Editorial Advisory Board of Global Gaming Business and iGB Executive. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Governors for Ford's Theater, and he also sits on the Boards of Directors for the International Center for Responsible Gaming, Public Affairs Council, U.S. Travel Association, and the National Alliance to End Homelessness, where he chairs its Finance Committee. Miller earned a B.A. degree from the University of Maryland and J.D. from American University Washington College of Law. He resides in Washington, D.C. with his two sons. #576: The world's greatest investors have a secret: they're weird. When one young fund manager met Bill Miller for the first time, he refused to shake hands. Instead, he locked eyes and declared: "I'm going to beat you, man." William Green joins us to share what he's learned from decades of conversations with investing legends — from the hyper-competitive to the deeply philosophical. These conversations reveal that success isn't just about strategy; it's about understanding yourself and playing to your strengths. The best investors are mavericks who think differently. They're willing to look strange, be lonely, and diverge from the crowd. Templeton demonstrated this during WWII. When Germany invaded France and markets crashed, he bought 104 stocks trading under $1 — including 37 bankrupt companies. His contrarian bet paid off 5x when markets recovered. But Green emphasizes this isn't just about getting rich. His decades of interviews reveal deeper wisdom about building a good life: Great investors focus on what they can control. They can't predict markets, but they can manage their behavior and emotions. They embrace simplicity. Jack Bogle advocated owning low-cost index funds rather than chasing complex strategies. They understand odds and risk. Howard Marks asks "What's the consequence if I'm wrong?" before making decisions. They play to their strengths. Charlie Munger says if you're 5'3", don't try to be a pro basketball player. They live below their means. As investor Tom Gaynor notes, "If you're living within your means, you're already rich." Green shares a practical framework called HALT PS — don't make important decisions when Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired, in Pain, or Stressed. This applies beyond investing to daily life. The conversation explores how to build resilience before market crashes through healthy habits, self-awareness, and preparation. Green notes that many successful investors practice meditation and read widely across disciplines. Even legends make mistakes. Bill Miller saw his assets drop from $77 billion to $800 million during the 2008 crisis. But he rebounded by staying true to his principles and learning from failure. Green's key message? Focus less on getting rich and more on building an "anti-fragile" life aligned with your values and strengths. The best investors aren't just good at making money — they're skilled at creating lives of meaning and purpose. IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN: 00:00 - Intro 03:33 - How Jason Zweig tackled the “honor & burden” of revising The Intelligent Investor. 11:06 - How Ben Graham's 4 core principles can help you to invest intelligently. 25:24 - What a sudden plunge in Japanese stocks shows about the craziness of markets. 27:56 - What Jason views as the most important paragraph ever written about investing. 32:42 - How Warren Buffett & Bill Miller profit from being “inversely” emotional. 33:57 - How regular investors can win by tuning out Wall Street's propaganda. 39:15 - Why you must decide if you're an “enterprising” or “defensive” investor. 44:40 - Why maintaining a “margin of safety” matters more than anything. 48:40 - Why Jason believes index funds should form the base of your portfolio. 52:52 -Why it's so hard to pick the tiny minority of “superstocks.” 1:00:21 - What dooms the vast majority of fund managers to underperform. 1:14:33 - How Graham's most successful investment violated his own principles. 1:33:01 - What life lessons Jason learned from Graham, Buffett, & Charlie Munger. In this episode, I speak with Bill Miller about his road to developing Motivational Interviewing. Bill explained that he started off heading into pastoral ministry but instead chose to be trained as a clinical psychologist. His behavioral PhD program required a two-semester course on how to work with clients before engaging in behavior therapy, and that's where he was introduced to Carl Rogers and a person-centered approach, which significantly influenced his career. He mentioned watching Gerald Patterson doing behavior therapy with families and seeing how he was with clients: warm, engaging, empathic, and funny, which was not covered in published descriptions of the method. On a sabbatical leave in Norway, Bill was asked to demonstrate his own therapeutic approach through role plays in which the clinicians would stop him and ask good questions: "What are you thinking just now? "Why did you ask that particular question?" "How did you decide what tor reflect from all that the client said?" These interactions helped him reflect on what he was doing and why he was doing it, and he wrote down a description that became the first description of motivational interviewing. Seven years later, on sabbatical leave in Australia, he found himself officed next to Stephan Rollnick who would become his career-long co-author. Rollnick had already been teaching motivational interviewing based on Bill's first article and they decided to write together the first book about motivational interviewing that was published in 1991. When they began teaching the method they noticed that some trainees seemed to be using MI techniques “on” rather than “with” clients. What had they left out? They began writing and teaching about the underlying spirit or attitude with which MI is to be practiced. Therapists also shared with them that this way of practicing seems to prevent burnout. In a later book with Theresa Moyers, Bill discussed eight clinical skills that characterize more effective therapists, which are: accurate empathy, genuineness, positive regard, acceptance, hope, evocation, giving advice, and having shared goals or direction. Bill and I explored the term “resistance” and how it is something that happens between people yet is often attributed to client pathology. In yet another book he argued that ambivalence is natural human nature and even a virtue, as it means the person is weighing the options. He and Rollnick reformulated "resistance" as sustain talk (a natural part of ambivalence) and/or discord in the therapeutic relationship. We discussed how in motivational interviewing the therapist is a guide rather than an expert-director. Lastly, he touched on his work on quantum change, which is transformational change that that can occur within a matter of moments or hours and tends to be both permanent and benevolent. Dr. William R. (Bill) Miller, Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico. He is the author of 67 books including four editions of Motivational Interviewing, Effective Psychotherapists: Clinical Skills That Improve Client Outcomes, Listening Well: The Art of Empathic Understanding , and On Second Thought: How Ambivalence Shapes Your Life. He has been teaching the skill of accurate empathy for over 50 years.

In this episode of Enrich Your Future, Andrew and Larry Swedroe discuss Larry's new book, Enrich Your Future: The Keys to Successful Investing. In this series, they discuss Chapter 11: The Demon of Chance.LEARNING: Don't always attribute skill to success, sometimes it could be just luck. “Just because there is a correlation doesn't mean causation. You must be careful not to attribute skill and not luck to success.”Larry Swedroe In this episode of Enrich Your Future, Andrew and Larry Swedroe discuss Larry's new book, Enrich Your Future: The Keys to Successful Investing. The book is a collection of stories that Larry has developed over 30 years as the head of financial and economic research at Buckingham Wealth Partners to help investors. You can learn more about Larry's Worst Investment Ever story on Ep645: Beware of Idiosyncratic Risks.Larry deeply understands the world of academic research and investing, especially risk. Today, Andrew and Larry discuss Chapter 11: The Demon of Chance.Chapter 11: The Demon of ChanceIn this chapter, Larry discusses why investors confuse skill with what he calls “the demon of luck,” a term he uses to describe the random and unpredictable nature of market outcomes.Larry cautions that before concluding that because an investment strategy worked in the past, it will work in the future, investors should be aware of the uncertainty and ask if there is a rational explanation for the correlation between the outcome and strategy.According to Larry, the assumption is that while short-term outperformance might be a matter of luck, long-term outperformance must be evidence of skill. However, a basic knowledge of statistics is crucial in understanding that with thousands of money managers playing the game, the odds are that a few, not just one, will produce a long-term performance record.Today, there are more mutual funds than there are stocks. With so many active managers trying to win, statistical theory shows that it's expected that some will likely outperform the market. However, beating the market is a zero-sum game before expenses since someone must own all stocks. And, if some group of active managers outperforms the market, there must be another group that underperforms. Therefore, the odds of any specific active manager being successful are, at best, 50/50 (before considering the burden of higher expenses active managers must overcome to outperform a benchmark index fund).Skill or “the demon of luck? From probability, it's expected that randomly, half the active managers would outperform in any one year, about one in four to outperform two years in a row, and one in eight to do so three years in a row. Fund managers who outperform for even three years in a row are often declared to be gurus by the financial media. But are they gurus, or is it just luck? According to Larry, it is hard to tell the difference between the two. Without this knowledge of statistics investors are likely to confuse skill with “the demon of luck.”Bill Miller, the Legg Mason Value Trust manager, was acclaimed as the next Peter Lynch. He managed to do what no current manager has done—beat the S&P 500 Index 15 years in a row (1991–2005). Indeed, that could be luck. You can't rely on that performance as a predictor of future greatness. Larry turns to academic...

I talk with three-time grammy winner, multi-instrumental singer songwriter, winner of numerous Native American Music Awards, and acclaimed painter, Bill Miller. Born on the Stockbridge-Munsee Reservation in northern Wisconsin, his big break came when Tori Amos discovered his music and invited him to open her tour for the Under the Pink album. They toured together for over a year. After that it was the same thing with Pearl Jam. If you ever saw Disney's Pocahontas, you remember the song “Colors of the Wind” sung by Vanessa Williams. Bill's flute playing throughout. That song won a Grammy and both the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. I'm really just scratching the surface of what Bill has achieved in his life. I met him when he played on my song “Crow Country”. We've since become good friends, sharing shows together, hanging out. I look up to him — as an example of grace and wisdom and a deep sense of honoring the Spirit which animates us all. We talk about his life and perspective on creativity and where it might come from. We discuss the importance of acknowledging loss and setbacks without allowing them to define you. Finally, he let me sit in on a couple of his original songs. It was a great day in the studio.

Often, and sadly, we don't listen to ourselves. But if we really want our behavior to change, we probably won't do it just because someone else tells us to. Usually, the person we will listen to more than anyone is ourselves. And that is why I'm so happy I got to talk with Dr. Michelle Drapkin (https://cbtcenterofcentralnj.com/drmichelle-drapkin/) about her latest book that involves one of my favorite advances in psychology. You've heard me geek out to it and it's called Motivational Interviewing. Her book is called The Motivational Interviewing Path to Personal Change: The Essential Workbook for Creating the Life You Want. I loved the book and I'm hardly alone. Accolades have come far and wide from the co-originator of Motivational Interviewing, Dr. Bill Miller, as well as the originator of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dr. Stephen Hayes. One of my favorite raves came from SuperPsyched guest, Dr. Jill Stoddard who said, “Drapkin has come to the rescue... Her guidance is clear, enthusiastic, and most of all...motivating! I highly recommend this book for anyone who is thinking about making a change and could use a wise guide to help show the way.” So, listen in as Michelle and I talk about the power of motivational interviewing.

Special 300th episode features one of the original developers of Motivational Interviewing: Dr. Stephen Rollnick!!!It's hard to believe this is our 300th episode of a podcast we started in an attempt to bring a more evidence-based approach back to the world of health & wellness, a world that too often chases $$$ by leaning in on fads and headlines. Frankly, I was already feeling overwhelmed when we started, but Suzanna suggested just trying to release them as the schedule allowed and see where it goes. Thanks to you, your encouragement, you sharing the podcast with others to nudge this little project up just outside the top 1% of podcasts, we've released weekly episodes ever since day one, bringing us to today's big #300.Longtime listeners know we've been incredibly fortunate to have SO many amazing guests over the years, and we've made an extra effort to feature the best of the best on the big ones. #100 featured Drs. James and Janice Prochaska, creators of the Stages of Change model. #200 featured Dr. Bill Miller, who along with today's special guest, Dr. Stephen Rollnick, developed Motivational Interviewing, which has changed- and continues to change - the world since it was first developed way back in 1983. We could not be more pleased than to have Dr. Rollnick join us on this special 300th episode.Looking for weekly tips, tricks and turbo boosts to enhance your life?
