At 54, exhausted and running on empty, Monique van Tulder did something radical — she walked away from the life that was draining her. What started as a small step — changing lightbulbs in another house — turned into five months of solitude, adventure, and self-discovery. She calls it A Grown Up's Gap Year. In this conversation, Monique shares the truth so many women over 50 will recognise: years of putting everyone else first, of pushing through fatigue and health scares, of saying yes when they wanted to say no. Her story begins not with adventure, but with depletion — thyroid cancer, low iron, invisible burnout — and a quiet longing to feel like herself again. What followed was a journey that was both terrifying and exhilarating: arriving alone in a silent Austrian village, leaping off cliffs to prove she still had courage, and slowly rediscovering joy, creativity, and her own voice. She came home renewed, lighter, and ready to name herself Project Fabulous Woman — a reminder that her own health, joy, and worth matter too. This episode is not just about leaving home. It's about permission. Monique reframes midlife and shows how any woman, anywhere, can create her own version of a gap year. Even fifteen minutes a day can be the spark of transformation. Whether you're feeling burnt out, invisible, or simply craving something more, Monique's story is a powerful reminder: midlife is not the end of the story. It's the perfect season to begin again. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why women so often hit burnout in midlife — and how to recognise the signs. How Monique turned a small act of escape into a life-changing adventure. The role of fear, courage, and joy in rediscovering yourself. What it means to become your own “Project Fabulous Woman.” Simple tools like “Kind Starts” and mini gap years you can use right now. In this episode of Connected Leadership Bytes, Andy Lopata revisits his conversation with Alisa Cohn, executive coach and author of From Startup to Grown Up. Alisa Cohn, named the Top Startup Coach in the World, shares her insights on the crucial role of professional relationships at various stages of a leader's journey. Andy and Alisa discuss the concept of "champions" in one's network and emphasise nurturing relationships authentically rather than for a specific purpose. Alisa provides strategies for leaders at different stages and they look at adapting networking strategies in a post-pandemic world, highlighting the value of virtual connections and creativity. Alisa also stresses that leaders must "find a way" to build relationships, as it is essential for career growth. The discussion also touches on the psychological aspects of leadership, such as managing self-talk, and offers practical advice for co-founder dynamics and navigating difficult conversations with scripts Alisa provides in her book. Key Takeaways: Networking is Non-Negotiable: Building and nurturing relationships is essential for your career, and you must always find a way to connect with others, regardless of external circumstances. Strategic Relationship Building: The key people you need in your network evolve as your career progresses; be strategic about connecting with mentors, investors, peers, or customers depending on your current stage. Authenticity Over Transaction: The most powerful relationships are nurtured naturally over time. Concentrate on being helpful and authentic, and you will reap the benefits. Lead Yourself First: Your self-image and internal dialogue directly impact your ability to build relationships. Managing your own mindset is the first step to effective leadership. Communication is Foundational: Clear communication, especially around expectations and values, is critical for preventing conflict and building strong partnerships. Actionable Insights: Map Your Network Needs: Identify what career stage you are in (startup, scale-up, or established leader) and list the three types of connections that would be most valuable to you right now. Then, devise a strategy to meet people in those categories. Practice Positive Outreach: The next time you reach out to someone new, do your research first. Reference something specific you admire about their work, explain the mutual value in connecting, and if possible, mention a shared contact with context. Develop a "Co-founder Prenup": If you have a business partner, set aside time to discuss and align on core values, long-term vision, and how you will handle disagreements. This proactive conversation can prevent future conflicts. Notre Dame Professor Patrick Deneen's book, “Why Liberalism Failed,” was not a project undertaken to explain the Trump phenomenon after President Donald Trump's surprise victory in the 2016 election. Nevertheless, it quickly entered the panoply of books, with Vice President JD Vance's “Hillbilly Elegy” among them, that provided insight into a new era of not only American but Western politics. The book's success, even featured on former President Barack Obama's list of recommended books, catapulted Deneen to one of the most prominent academic figures in the West and his ideas to the forefront of America's most contentious political debates. Much has happened in the years since “Why Liberalism Failed” was published. Liberalism managed to claw back power, first through undermining Trump's agenda at almost every turn from within, and then through the empty vessel of former President Joe Biden. Yet, Trump was able to mount a surprising return in 2024 with a new resolve to dismantle the forces of liberalism concentrated in Washington, D.C. Deneen joined “The Signal Sitdown” this week to discuss what future lies beyond liberalism. Note: this episode was recorded in May 2025. We're back like we left something ©️ Freeway! It's not that serious, but still. For our semi-grand return, we link up with Author and Journalist, Ben Pedroche, to talk about one of our favourite subjects: Indie Hip Hop. Ben's new book, Independent as Fuck: Underground Hip-Hop from 1995-2005, was released by Velocity Press in May 2025. The book looks back at this golden era, celebrating the most important artists, record labels, 12” records, and albums, along with the stories behind them, while also shining a light on those who have since been forgotten. We caught up with Ben to discuss how the book came together, his favourite indie labels and much more. Brad Feld has spent over 40 years building companies, mentoring founders, and investing in the startup ecosystem. He's the co-founder of Techstars, a prolific venture capitalist, and the author of nine books. In this episode, Brad opens up about the mental reset that came with turning 60, why he stopped chasing “more,” and what led him to dust off a book draft about mentorship that had been sitting on the shelf. We go deep into his new book Give First, his belief in non-transactional generosity, and why he thinks founders should lead from curiosity, not ego.Brad also shares what went wrong at Techstars, what it taught him about founder empathy, and how he thinks about legacy in a world where everything is temporary.Where to find Brad:feld.comGive First (book) Timestamps: (00:00) Why Brad chose to go into hibernation (03:36) How stepping back gave him a 9-to-5 for the first time (06:58) Returning to code and reading 3 books a week (08:05) The four things Brad actually loves (10:11) Not striving, not optimizing: a new mindset for a new decade (13:14) The messy journey of writing Give First (15:08) Feedback that reshaped the book (17:34) Techstars' awkward teenage years (19:59) Coming out of hibernation, temporarily (23:32) Alter egos: Brad the Book Salesman, Vlad, and Spike (29:14) The pain of watching Techstars struggle publicly (34:30) How founder empathy deepened after Techstars' turbulence (36:28) What Give First really means and what it does not (38:49) Positive-sum, multi-turn thinking (41:34) Why tennis is the perfect metaphor for long-term success (45:00) Give First as the startup community engine (48:21) Mentorship without expectations (50:07) Socratic questioning and the five whys (54:00) Diagnosing startup fundraising problems (56:32) Being open to randomness (58:57) The power of short assignments and low-stakes access (01:04:28) Why Brad keeps writing: to learn (01:07:14) What he wishes he knew earlier (01:10:34) Advice for founders stepping into leadership (01:12:38) Mortality, meaning, and option valueIn this episode, you'll learn:How Give First evolved from a Techstars mantra into a movementThe difference between mentorship and adviceWhy and how being a giver pays off How to set boundaries while still being responsiveWhat makes founder relationships thrive or breakWhy being open to randomness can change everythingHow to navigate difficult company phases with empathyWhat Brad believes really matters in the third act of lifeConnect with Alisa! In this episode of Parents Who Think, Danusia Malina-Derben joins Ken Mossman for a layered and moving conversation about modern masculinity, emotional maturity, and what it means to be an integrated man. Ken brings wit and wisdom to topics most men were never taught to face: how to play, how to feel, and how to take responsibility without shame or performance. They explore why so many men exile parts of themselves, like their inner child or rebellious adolescent, and what's possible when those voices are finally welcomed home. Ken also shares what it looks like to meet children where they are, and how one moment with his four-year-old son changed everything he thought he knew about parenting. This is not your typical fatherhood talk. It's about presence, power, and the radical responsibility of being a fully formed human, on purpose.
