"It's the most movie filled time of the year..." and we are joined by a man who meets and maybe exceeds our Oscars excitment, Anthony Desanctis, Programming Manager of Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas to predict the 95th Academy Awards. In this episode we gather to offer our picks, our snubs, and our greatest hopes for the 95th Academy Awards. We cover all four acting races, director, and best picture in our prediction show in hopes to solidify our ballots and help you with your own. In a season that has been marked by emotional speeches from Ke Huy Quan, Michelle Yeoh, and Brendan Fraser, can the 95th ceremony deliver the goods and make a little magic? Who will win out in the hotly contested best actress race? Will Rihanna absolutely slay her performance? (the answer is yes). How many times will Jimmy Kimmel make Moonlight-La La Land jokes? It's all ours to find out.
Assistant Coach David Fudor returned to the Bench to host this game. In it we learned that Josh and his mother were on a daytime game show in 1991, that Mark PricewaterhouseCooper would not have created the Moonlight-La La Land debacle, and that Dan's Mind Palace has broken ground on a new wing that will house the FTG Hall of Fame. https://www.patreon.com/benchwarmerstp https://www.facebook.com/benchwarmerstp https://www.twitter.com/benchwarmerstp https://www.instagram.com/benchwarmerstp/ https://www.teepublic.com/stores/benchwarmers-trivia-podcast

Sandy Cohen and Christy spent years together in the trenches covering entertainment for The Associated Press, and Christy feels so lucky that they’re still friends years after they’ve both left. Sandy has lots of great stories to tell from her time interviewing celebrities — which began with Elizabeth Taylor her first day on the job — but she also discusses growing up in the Southern California city of Torrance, how she got her start in journalism and what she brings that sets her apart from other entertainment writers. One of the coolest assignments Sandy had was covering the Academy Awards for a dozen years from an incredible, intimate perch backstage — and yes, she has some insight on the infamous “Moonlight”/”La La Land” mixup. Plus, she’s just a smart, upbeat, genuine woman in general. This was a fun one, so enjoy.
Barring an envelope snafu so unholy it makes last year’s Moonlight/La La Land mix-up look rehearsed, we already know which highly praised and very popular big-screen lollapalooza of 2017 won’t win the Best Picture Oscar. The director who helmed it won’t take home a statuette on Sunday night, either. That’s because neither the movie nor its director are even in contention.
Robert, John, and Kyle talk about Moonlight/La La Land, and coming from behind to win it all. Its a new Sharkdropper show!
Vee, Cel and AJ have on a special guest filling in for Kess. Lara is an advocate for African Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, using her online platform Levers In Heels. For What's Popping, AJ brings up Viola Davis' big win at the Oscars (1.48) and the whole Moonlight-La La Land mix up saga. Lara thinks Viola's speech to cast members was more emotional than to her hubby! ooh?! (2.20). AJ is mad at the aftermath of the Oscars blunder — Moonlight having to share the spotlight with La La Land on news, headlines, etc. (4.15) Can't Black people ever win?! Vee doesn't understand why Warren Beatty didn't get as much backlash for the Oscars as Steve Harvey did for Miss Universe 2015 (5.09) Could it be a race issue? Cel highlights the academic achievement of Dr. Ellen Boakye, who swept 10! awards from the University of Ghana Medical School (5.45), and the efforts of Dr. Ayorkor Korsah who was featured on the cover of Forbes Woman Africa talking about Robotics and its future in Ghana (7.35). Vee applauds the increasing number of women in government in Ghana (9.05), while AJ wonders if there's more to it than just female representation (10.30), but Lara believes people are starting to understand the role of women in decision-making and acknowledges women in leadership roles in the corporate world (10.59). Vee's love for African movies though! Cel urges Ghanaians excelling to actively mentor young ones in the society, schools, etc (14.07). Vee wonders what we have to show for 60 Years of Independence (19.26); Cel thinks we don't highlight enough all the women who contributed to Ghana's Independence (20.31) and AJ believes we should tell their story (21.29). Happy 60th Independence Day! Song Credit : Special thanks to Adomaa & VI Music for use of their song, Traffic Jam. Find more of her work here.
