What did you think of the 95th Annual Academy Awards? For this special Oscars 2023 wrap-up, Aaron and Amanda are LIVE from SXSW 2023 to discuss the events, speeches, and winners of the 95th Annual Academy Awards, including a noticeable lack of professional slapping. The Academy Awards (“Oscars”) are the most prestigious awards in filmmaking and showcase some of the greatest talent and work in motion pictures for that running year. The nominees and winners are selected by majority vote from members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Ballots are cast by members from within the industry and, in most categories, represent the corresponding branch (ex.: actors nominate actors). Discussed on this episode Oscars 2023 | The 95th Academy Awards winners, ceremony, and stand-out moments. We kick off Black History Month with a stirring musical biopic that came out thirty years ago AND an even more probing recent documentary on the same subject. That subject would of course be the legendary pop singer Tina Turner who is not only among the highest selling recording artists of all time but has also lead quite the extraordinary life. The early part of her career was linked with her ex-husband Ike Turner who while also a talented musician in his own right, also became famous albeit for much darker reasons....mainly his abusive relationship with Tina. The documentary (directed by Daniel Lindsay and TJ Martin) aired on HBO two years ago and was mainly based upon Tina's autobiography along with the broadway musical "I Tina" which inspired it. Angela Bassett stars as Tina Turner in the narrative feature (directed by Brian Gibson) in a role which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress - Lawrence Fishburne plays Ike Turner, also in a role which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Both films delve into the life of the gifted artist who delivered such memorable pop hits as "Simply The Best" and "We Don't Need Another Hero." “A nice guy and his playboy buddy host an ill-advised mega-party.” That vague logline is what the original HOUSE PARTY (1990) starring Kid N' Play has in common with the new HOUSE PARTY, starring Jacob Lattimore and Tosin Cole.
