In the mid-aughts, America became obsessed with high fashion for some reason. Maybe it was Project Runway's silver-haired imp Tim Gunn whispering in our ears to “make it work.” Maybe we were all bewitched by the well-dressed ladies of Sex and the City. But Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo were suddenly household names. Enter Meryl Streep as the boss from Hell: Miranda Priestly, the editor-in-chief of Runway magazine. She's bringing the fire and brimstone of haute couture to torture her new assistant, played by a fresh-faced Anne Hathaway, in this 2006 comedy written by Aline Brosh McKenna from the novel by Lauren Weisberger. The film was a massive hit, won multiple awards, and scored Oscar noms for Streep and costume designer Patricia Field, who reportedly spent over $1 million to clothe the cast. But does this Runway project make it work? Or does it seem as gauche and dated as last season's trends? They say the devil is in the details, and this time, The Devil Wears Prada.   Gird your loins, everyone!   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. That sounds very woo, but if you think about retirement as a positive thing and not about how much you're going to miss work, that's going to be a big change. And I think a lot of people when they plan for retirement, they're just thinking about the money aspect, like I have to put so much away. And that's sort of such a distant future thing. It's not really a personal plan where you're not just saying I'm going to travel, but I always wanted to go to Greece, and start like having concrete plans that you want to put in place, so that when you do retire, you're already making plans for the future. Our guest today is Kelly Dempsey – a sustainable fashion designer and Project Runway Season 14 runner-up. She has become a leading voice for sustainability and equitability in the fashion industry and has been featured on Good Morning American and in Marie Claire.Born and raised in Munsen, MA, Kelly taught herself to upcycle when she was 9 years old. She currently lives in Boston with her boyfriend of 10 years.(1:34) How did Kelly learn to sew? As a 9-year-old she started to experiment! As a kid she would shop at the secondhand store two doors down and since she was in a small town…she inevitably ended up buying her school mate's clothes. This led to some pretty intense bullying. So…she experimented and learned to make her own clothing.(3:45) In the bullying she experienced, Kelly said it ignited her to be strong. Listen as she gives advice to those who are being bullied today.(5:17) And then there's “Kelly from the Deli” who stared on Project Runway. Here's her story about this adventure. Well after sleeping in her car many times…she never gave up. She takes us on the journey.(9:30) She was he only self-taught designer on the show…she explains how this felt and how it motivated her!(10:28) Kelly takes us behind the scenes of Project runway and shares with us the different requirements. And how she had to put her life on hold for the duration of filming the show.(13:30) Kelly talks about fast fashion and how it adds to pollution worldwide. 1 in four people in the world are garment workers…and most are women. She describes the conditions they work in. (18:20) What can we as consumers do with the clothing we no longer need? Kelly explains the theory of shopping our closets. We talk all about the fascinating fashion-forward game that is Project Runway that even Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum wouldn't approve of. Project Runway was developed by Tornado Studios and Published by Atari in 2010 for Wii and PC.  It is a fashion simulation game based on the TV show. Players compete in fashion challenges—applying make-up, piecing outfits together, and performing a catwalk mini-game.  Players are then given a star rating for each minigame along with an overall rating to find out if they passed the challenge. Press Any Button hosts Nicky (a new gamer) and Eric (a lifetime gamer) are a married couple who both love video games. For every video game they will discuss its past (history of the game, developers story, and fun facts), present (game play, game review and strategy), and future (will there be a sequel?? A movie?)  BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE… Every game also comes with a challenge presented by the host that chose the game. If the challenge is not completed then whoever failed has to do a video game rap! So if you want to learn more about video games, hear some nerdy video game raps, or just have a good time this is the podcast for you. We try to cover all types of video games including: Retro and New video games Playstation, Nintendo, Xbox, Sega, and PC games Any and all genres including RPG, Simulation, Beat em up, platforming, mystery, first person shooter, sandbox, puzzle, action adventure, etc. Follow us on  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pressanybutton_podcast/ Credits: Nicky Smith Eric Luedtke Music by Mark Spurlock and Eric Luedtke References: https://www.newson6.com/story/5e3670b22f69d76f62080cfb/project-runway-video-game-being-developed-in-tulsa https://www.giantbomb.com/tornado-studios/3010-6698/ https://www.ign.com/games/powerbike https://www.tornado-studios.com/ https://twitter.com/bogorad222/status/1713552628464980145/photo/1

It turns out this guest is the older version of our very own Alan Seales. Get ready for excellent Dad jokes and a lot of laughs. Seriously though - Jeffery Madoff has a wildly inventive and creative brain and a masterful entrepreneurial spirit. For Jeff, barriers are simply not something that exists because his creative spirit always finds a way to thrive.  Jeff is a Fashion designer, teacher, author, playwright, and producer who helps dispel the myth that artists can't be good business people and that good business people can't be creative!  Jeff has directed award-winning commercials, documentaries, and web content for clients such as Ralph Lauren, Victoria's Secret, Tiffany, Radio City, The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and Harvard University just to name a few. He's also the writer and producer for “PERSONALITY” a play based on Rock and roll hall of fame artist, Lloyd Price that just opened in Chicago in June 2023. Connect with Jeff on LinkedIn, Instagram, and his website.  Get Jeff's book: Creative Careers: Making a Living with Your Ideas See Personality in Chicago Make sure to follow this podcast everywhere you find podcasts, leave a rating and a review, and slip into our Instagram DMs at @wasitchance. More about Heather via @vickeryandco on Instagram, @Braveheather on TikTok, and listen to The Brave Files More about Alan via @theatre_podcast on Instagram and listen to The Theatre Podcast with Alan Seales EPISODE TAKEAWAYS: Jeff had no plan on what he was going to do but he was always seduced by ideas. Fashion design was never a passion but an opportunity.  He did have some merchandising experience from his parent's business when he was younger. Jeff put his designs on the back of a motorcycle, headed to Chicago, and made a name for himself. We make sense of our lives through the rearview mirror. By the age of 22, Jeff had over 100 people working for him. When Jeff decided to move to NYC he lost his financial backing. So he closed his company in Wisconsin and took off. As a young man with long hair in the 70's Jeff had to prove he had financial backing in order to be taken seriously.  Jeff has embraced opportunity over and over again through meeting other people, embracing storytelling, and being willing to simply try things that interested him. If you're paying attention everything you do plays a part in everything else you do. It's easier to start at the top and work your way down. You never know until you try and there's no reason not to go big. Jeff believes that you shouldn't say no to yourself. You shouldn't say no to yourself. If you're passionate about something give it a try. There are enough people that will say no to you. Don't say no to yourself. Jeff was his own fallback position. There was no other Plan B. He focuses on the goals rather than the obstacles in the way. The way to “run distance” is to break it down into smaller milestones and then celebrate those milestones. Perseverance is more important than talent. Jeff says he's smart enough to know what he doesn't know. After being a guest speaker for a class at Parsons, Jeff took a job as a part-time professor (he was actually hired by Tim Gunn!). His class is about Creative Careers. The way you talk to yourself makes a big difference in how successful you'll be. Opportunities are not opportunities if you don't recogonize them.  It was absolute chance that Jeff was introduced to Lloyd Price and that's what eventually led to Jeff writing and producing Personality which is now running in Chicago. Don't wait for someone else to make magic happen in your life, do it yourself. There's courage and there's confidence. Confidence is a capability that comes from repetition. Courage is stepping off the edge of the cliff and not knowing what's going to happen.  Doing a play is like a start-up. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Some of James' more notable achievements include pioneering ski tourism in Afghanistan and Iraq, organizing marathons in Afghanistan and Somaliland (the first mixed gender sporting events in the history of those respective countries) and more recently, arranged the logistics for Michael Palin's travel documentary in Iraq. While James, our guest on episode 264 returns to the show to briefly re-visit his one way ticket to 300 years into the future somewhere in the mountains, the focus of our conversation here is his most recent adventure through Afghanistan. James covers logistics, security, changes he has and hasn't seen in the country over the course of numerous visits, etc. Plus, among other unforgettable experiences, James highlights camping out at the the 65m-tall Minaret of Jam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which remotely stands alone in western Afghanistan, in all its 12th century magnificence. James is just one of the exceptional individuals featured on the podcast where Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guest where they would go if given a one way ticket, no coming back! Their destinations may be in the past, present, future, real, imaginary or state of mind.  Steven's guests have included: Nobel Peace Prize Winner, President Jose Ramos-Horta; General David H. Petraeus, US Army (Ret.); Legendary Talk Show Host, Dick Cavett; Law Professor, Alan Dershowitz; Fashion Expert, Tim Gunn; Broadcast Legend, Charles Osgood; International Rescue Committee President & CEO, David Miliband; Former United States Senator, Joseph I. Michael Fabiano is a distinguished international opera singer. As a tenor, he regularly performs at leading opera houses worldwide. In 2014, Michael won both the Richard Tucker Award  and the Beverly Sills Artist Award, making him the first singer to win both prestigious honors in the same year. His musical artistry is matched by his passionate commitment to arts education. Michael is the Co-Founder & Executive Director of ArtSmart - a non-profit that transforms the lives of youth in under-resourced communities across the US through tuition-free music lessons and mentorship by paid, professional artists. While opera is his passion, Michael's large focus is building a better future for Americans seeking greater upward mobility. It is his belief that the arts is one of the great unifiers and a catalyst for success in life. Additionally, as an entrepreneur, Michael is a partner in Resonance, an operating system for creative organizations and businesses that streamlines everything from payroll to spreadsheets and email to employee communication. He is an active private pilot, a life-long baseball umpire, and writes extensively in blogs and articles about the American educative experience. On this episode Michael shares his one way ticket to Mars. Plus, in our sweeping conversation, he highlights why arts education is critical to a child's development, and why college campuses should be marketplaces of ideas (which he believes they're currently not). Michael also calls for a re-imagined opera experience, which includes cell phone use and food and drink enjoyed in the theatre itself. Michael is just one of the exceptional individuals featured on the podcast where Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guest where they would go if given a one way ticket, no coming back! It's double the Snatch Game in half the time this week! On the upside, we got less time with the performances that bombed, but on the downside, we didn't get more of Tim Gunn, Rosie O'Donnell or Joan Rivers--or just about any of Sasha Colby. The runway was a bit of a Dragula crossover but the main event was the conclusion of this season's Act One headliners, The Twins, with a choreographed swan song of a lip sync that sent Sugar back to TikTok.
