We're starting to step up our one-on-one podcast game, and we figured we'd go back all the way to the beginning of Washington's Golden Era for football. That coincides with the start of the Don James Era, so Dawgman's Kim Grinolds tracked down one of James's early team captains, Mike Rohrbach. Rohrbach was one of four captains of the 1977 Washington Football team that won the 1978 Rose Bowl, joining Warren Moon, Blair Bush, and Dave Browning. After school, Rohrbach joined the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and came back in 1989 as the volunteer chaplain of the UW Football team, a position he held until 2005. Mike is also the current volunteer chaplain for the men's basketball team, something he's done since 2004. But his day job is Run to Win, an outreach that he created with his wife Karen for the last 29 years. Their goal is to bring communities together through chaplaincy and sports, offering up summer camps to help children learn and grow. Grinolds and Rohrbach go back to Mike's childhood love of Washington Football and his recruitment to Washington out of Ingraham High School. He came to Montlake at a time when Jim Owens was heading out and Don James was taking over, so Rohrbach talked about the unique aspect of playing for both legends. He also reminisced about certain players and coaches like Randy Hart, Dan Lloyd, Dave Pear, Blair Bush, Ray Pinney, Nesby Glasgow, Michael Jackson, Antowaine Richardson, Mike Baldassin, Warren Moon, Joe Steele, and more. As the volunteer chaplain for men's basketball, Rohrbach also talked from his perspective on the inside watching the hoops transition from Lorenzo Romar to Mike Hopkins. Finally, Rohrbach provides more insight into Run to Win and how people can participate in their outreach. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
For the two months since the conclusion of the Seahawks season, every position group has now been dissected to the point that a person could be convinced that every area of the team has room to find improvement. Ahead of free agency next week, Adam and Brandan direct the focus toward what the Seahawks really need to find in free agency and away from the positions that could be considered as luxury moves. But if Seattle is going to have a championship offseason, their financial focus truly needs to be on positions of need. Teams can begin negotiating directly with players early next week, but is it possible that a contract for Clowney could come at the end of this week ahead of free agency? If he does decide to head out we talk about why Yannick Ngakoue isn't the answer and how there are several names in the free agent market who could be signed to help build a solid rotations of veterans along with the young players along the Seahawks line. Compensatory picks have been announced and we talk about which picks the Seahawks have now. Russell Wilson also has a new quarterback coach who we can only expect will become the NFL's next Mike Holmgren. We close out the show by talking about the restrictions impacting Seattle sporting events, an article about the Rams that asks a question that has already been answered and a look at the NFL's latest draft model to incorrectly predict future Seahawks. Better at life honors go to leadership in XFL officiating and former Seahawks defensive back Nesby Glasgow. Nesby Glasgow, former Seattle Seahawks safety from 1988 to 1992 returns to the show and talks about his 14 year NFL career that came after a college career with the Washington Huskies and ended back in Seattle. As a 14 year NFL veteran who played until he was 35, we talk about the surprise of the offseason that Doug Baldwin is leaving the game at a relatively young age. We start the show by talking about his experience with the NFL draft and how an injury in the Senior Bowl dropped him down into the 8th round of the 1979 NFL Draft. With college players opting not to play in certain games leading up to the draft, Glasgow offers his perspective on the particular game he would be sure not to miss out on. Glasgow played for former Seahawks head coach Chuck Knox, who passed away last offseason, and he talks about how Knox was the greatest coach he played for and shares a story about how Coach Knox decided to celebrate after one of the team's big wins. He also shares a story about how the team got in the head of Bo Jackson in the final game of the 1988 season that earned the team its first AFC West Division title. Seattle went on to lose to the Bengals in the playoffs who represented the AFC in the Super Bowl that year against Joe Montana and the San Francisco 49ers. Concussions in the NFL continue to be a concern, and a particular concern to Glasgow who is now 62 years old, he says some recent changes to the offseason could actually be detrimental to current NFL players. As we reach a middle point of the offseason, Glasgow talked about his preparation and how he feels it set him apart from others in the NFL. Seahawks Legend and former safety & punt returner Nesby Glasgow joins Answers for Elders for the 12 Days of Goodness. “It's uplifting to a lot of the seniors we visit....
Incredibly sad news this past week as we learned of the passing of Seahawks Hall of Fame defensive tackle Cortez Kennedy. Kennedy passed away at the age of 48. Adam and Brandan bring on former Seahawks defensive back Nesby Glasgow to talk about his memories of Tez as well as his memories of finishing off his career in a Seahawks uniform. In other Seahawks news from the past week, Colin Kaepernick made a visit to Seattle in addition to another backup prospect Austin Davis. Is it time we start, at the very least, considering the idea that Kap may be the Seahawks backup quarterback? Michael Bennett had Kapernick's back this past week and his support found him in a Twitter war with Stephen A. Smith. That wasn't the only fight he got into with a highly opinionated member of the media as Matt Calkins of the Seattle Times took some shots at him, which Bennett responded by advocating a boycott of the local newspaper. Bennett also called an article by Seth Wickersham of ESPN "trash," after the reporter clearly went out of his way to try and pit Richard Sherman against Russell Wilson. The guys go through the article and talk about what was worthwhile in the article as it tries to explain some of the reasons behind why Sherman hasn't gotten over the Super Bowl loss. The title of Flocktimus Maximus goes to DCH this week, who is helping us with our latest piece of equipment for the show. Accuracy of reports coming out of Montana's special election get a big do better as well as a guy who got Adam into a high speed pursuit on I-90. Better at Life goes to Cortez Kennedy as we honor his memory and close out the show with some of his words from his 2012 Hall of Fame induction.
