Amina Claudine Myers was one of the earliest members of the AACM, and if you're listening to this podcast, I'm pretty sure you know what the AACM is, but just in case you don't, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians is an organization formed by Muhal Richard Abrams, Roscoe Mitchell and a few other musicians in Chicago in the mid-1960s. A tremendous number of the most important avant-garde jazz musicians of the mid to late 20th century and the 21st century have come out of the AACM, including Anthony Braxton, Henry Threadgill, Fred Anderson, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Wadada Leo Smith, Matana Roberts, Nicole Mitchell, Tomeka Reid, and Amina Claudine Myers. There's a tremendous book by trombonist and composer George Lewis, called A Power Stronger Than Itself, that's the best possible introduction to the group. You should absolutely read that if you're a fan of any of the musicians I just named. Now, all the founders and early members of the AACM worked together, supporting each other, and moving the music forward in large part by composing and performing original work. What's interesting — and this is something we talk about in this conversation — is that Amina Claudine Myers' early albums included some original music, but they also included interpretations of other people's compositions, specifically Marion Brown and Bessie Smith. But she always paired that music up with pieces of her own that demonstrated a really fascinating compositional voice that was a combination of jazz, gospel, blues, and classical music. She took all her influences and early training and combined them into something that sounded like nobody else out there, and was incredibly powerful. In addition to making her own records, she's been a part of albums by Lester Bowie, Henry Threadgill, Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton, Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre, Bill Laswell, and many other people. Her latest release is a collection of duos with Wadada Leo Smith, the first time they've recorded together since 1969, and their first collaboration as leaders.I'm really glad I had the chance to interview her. We talked about a lot of things — the AACM, the role of spirituality in music and the way the term spiritual jazz is used to gatekeep certain things, her work with all the artists I just mentioned, her upbringing in Arkansas and Texas and how it influenced her writing... this is a really wide-ranging conversation that I think will be really interesting for you to hear. I thank you as always for listening.

Some titles include Holiday Hotline, A Kismet Christmas, The Nine Lives of Christmas, and Love at First Dance. Jill Girling, Lori Mather-Welch and Nina Weinman are credited for writing “Flip That Romance.” Jill and Lori appear to be writing partners. They've worked on the same projects, including a Hallmark movie called “Love's Complicated” from 2016. Nina Weinman was brought onto the project for a re-write. Julie Gonzalo co-stars as Jules Briggs of Jules Briggs Design. Julie has 48 acting credits and e last saw her in “3 Bed, 2 Bath, 1 Ghost” with husband Chris McNally. Outside of Hallmark, Julie has been in a number of projects including “Supergirl,” “Veronica Mars,” the reboot of “Dallas” as well as “Christmas with the Kranks.” Tyler Hynes plays Lance. While Tyler is a Hallmark Channel fan favorite, this was only his 3rd movie for the network. Since then, he either starred or appeared in 15 movies for Hallmark. Fiona Vroom plays friend Teri. Fiona has 73 acting credits including Hallmark hits like “Three Wise Men and a Baby,” “The Wedding Veil” and “The Wedding Veil Expectations.” Matthew Kevin Anderson plays Richard. He's one of those familiar faces that often pops up on Hallmark. With 101 acting credits, we've seen him in “Love and Jane,” “Lights, Camera, Christmas!” and “Love, Classified.” You might also recognize him for his work on Lifetime as well, his resume is full of Hallmark Rom-Coms and Lifetime Murdery fare. We last saw him in “Christmas on Cherry Lane” and “Mystery on Mistletoe Lane.” He also appeared in a movie we mentioned last week, “Totally Killer.” Related Podcast Episode: Girls Gone Hallmark review "Shifting Gears" Yan-Kay Crystal Lowe (commonly credited as Crystal Lowe) plays friend Kat. She recently directed Tyler in “Shifting Gears.” We are getting to know Crystal better as Rita in the SSD series - since we'll be dropping reviews all summer long for Sign Sealed Delivered Summer. Shannon Chan-Kent plays Elise. Shannon was last seen on Hallmark in “Field Day” - a Julie Sherman Wolfe movie we loved. I do wish she'd do more projects for Hallmark. During the pandemic, saxophonist Mai Sugimoto, bassist Joshua Abrams and drummer Isaiah Spencer came together to perform and honor the life and legacy of Chicago saxophonist Fred Anderson. From that moment on, Sugimoto recognized the magic and chemistry of the trio leading to the creation of her latest album “Sunlight Filtering Through Leaves". Reset sits down with the Japanese-born, Chicago-based improvised jazz artist to learn about her journey in music.

This episode goes deep into the theological concept of atonement. You may not know what atonement is (broadly, the reconciliation of the relationship between God and people through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ), but today's guest is here to help. Fred Anderson, author of Why Did Jesus Die and What Does That Have to Do with Me?, is pastor emeritus at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City. He retired after forty-two years in ministry, but also served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War and is the author of hymn texts. His book, Why Did Jesus Die…, looks at atonement biblically, theologically, historically, and sacramentally to give us a more holistic view of--and perhaps a better way to approach--the concept, which has come to mean more about what we can do to make things better, rather than what God has already done to reconcile our relationship with God.Resources:Buy Why Did Jesus Die and What Does That Have to Do with Me?

In previous episodes, we've talked about what people commonly understand as fusion, which drummer Lenny White, who appeared in episode two of this series, prefers to call jazz-rock. That's the version that starts with Miles Davis's Bitches Brew and Tony Williams' Lifetime and quickly branches out with Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return To Forever and Weather Report and on and on. But as we've continued the discussion, we've expanded the scope of inquiry to include adventurous funk and R&B fusion, which includes everything from P-Funk and Earth, Wind & Fire and the Ohio Players — and wow, do the Ohio Players deserve a place in the fusion conversation that they are very rarely granted — to Donald Byrd and Freddie Hubbard and especially George Duke.Adam Rudolph is a fusion artist in about as broad a sense as you can imagine. He's been a percussionist for close to 50 years, and should be much better known than he is. He's been around since the early '70s and has worked with everyone: Yusef Lateef, Fred Anderson, Don Cherry, Roscoe Mitchell, Pharoah Sanders, Sam Rivers, Wadada Leo Smith, Herbie Hancock, Maulawi, Foday Musa Suso, Hassan Hakmoun, Jon Hassell… he's part of the Bill Laswell company of players, too, so he's on a zillion records through that connection. Plus he leads two main groups of his own, Moving Pictures and the Go! Organic Orchestra, which have made many, many albums and even crossed over with each other a time or two.Adam and I had a really fascinating conversation over the course of two phone calls. The impetus was Symphonic Tone Poem For Brother Yusef, a collaboration between him and reeds player Bennie Maupin that's just been released. Bennie Maupin of course is a legend on his own — he played on Miles Davis's Bitches Brew and On The Corner, he was a member of Marion Brown's group in the 1960s, he was in Mwandishi and the Headhunters with Herbie Hancock, he played with Woody Shaw, and his own album from 1974, The Jewel In The Lotus, is an absolutely brilliant record that blends spiritual jazz with almost New Age ambient music. There's really no other album like it; if you've never heard it, it's a must-hear. So obviously Rudolph and I talk about Maupin, whom he's worked with off and on for decades, but we also talk about Laswell and about Lateef and about the whole idea of world music and fusion-as-creative-mindset that I've been discussing with every artist I've interviewed for the podcast this year. We talk a lot about the philosophy that goes into bringing together musicians from all sorts of traditions, from all over the globe, and finding ways to make their ideas flow together. That's what he does with Go! Organic Orchestra, the membership of which is completely open and the music of which is created through spontaneous conduction. So he was really the ideal person to talk about all this stuff with. I think you'll come away from this episode with a lot to think about. I know I did. And I hope you enjoy listening to it. All the music you'll hear, by the way, comes from Symphonic Tone Poem For Brother Yusef.

Fred Brown Anderson was born on Oct. 10, 1936, in Sutherland Springs. Although his career took him far, he returned to the place where he was born. Back when Fred was young, “This was a full-blown town!” he exclaimed. “It used to be called the ‘Saratoga of the South.'” Fred remembers the amazing hotel that once housed visitors from everywhere who came to visit the famed springs; the hotel had two pools and a park surrounding it. Greg Ward is a saxophonist and composer that was born in Peoria, IL. Currently based in Chicago, Ward has had the opportunity to perform and record with a varied group of artists like Prefuse 73, Lupe Fiasco, Tortoise, William Parker, Andrew D'Angelo, and Mike Reed. In 2000, Ward began his studies at Northern Illinois University where he worked with Steve Duke, Fareed Haque, Ron Carter, and Joey Sellers. Already interested in composition, having the opportunity to compose for NIU's jazz combos deepened his understanding of the inner-workings of music. Also, working with composer and arranger, Joey Sellers, equipped Ward with some important tools to further explore this new love. Around his sophomore year in college, Ward started spending many nights performing in the jazz clubs of Chicago. Soon, he would meet another one of his mentors, saxophonist, Fred Anderson, who would later select him to host a jam session at the Velvet Lounge for four years. During this time period, Ward experienced much growth as a performer and composer and developed a vibrant community of performers, artists, dancers, and listeners. After graduating from NIU in 2004 with a degree in Jazz Studies/Saxophone Performance, Ward moved to Chicago and took advantage of every opportunity that was offered to him. Composing two pieces for the International Contemporary Ensemble, performing a quartet composition for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's Chamber Music Series, composing Wings for the Peoria Ballet Company, and being commissioned by the Jazz Institute of Chicago for a new composition, which was performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival in 2009, are just a few of the many experiences that shaped Ward during his years in Chicago. In 2009, Ward decided to move to New York City. Almost immediately after he arrived in NYC, he began working with JazzReach, an NYC-based jazz education organization that shares multi-media programs throughout the US. In 2010, he would produce his first CD as a leader with his Chicago-based band, Fitted Shards. South Side Story received much critical acclaim, including "Recording of the Year" by the Chicago Tribune. Next, in 2011, Ward formed Phonic Juggernaut, which features Damion Reid on drums and Joe Sanders on bass. Together, they recorded and released a CD on Thirsty Ear Recordings that same year. Also, in 2011, Ward composed and performed a commission from the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra for a concerto for jazz quartet and string orchestra. In 2012, Ward was selected as one of the two New Music USA Van Lier Fellows. In 2014, he received a commission/residency from the Jazz Gallery and premiered Capturing Sunlight, which was an hour-long work for septet and included a short documentary by Diana Quinones Rivera. The Capturing Sunlight project was inspired by the life and work of Preston Jackson. Recently, Ward has collaborated with another composer, sound designer, and performer, Caleb Willitz. First, they composed the film score for Beresford Bennett's film, Pinch, which was an official selection of the 2015 San Diego Black Film Festival. Second, Ward and Willitz will be releasing an electro-acoustic project, Gaps and Spaces: Synoptic Optiks. Interview with Fred Anderson, long time Juggler and Entertainer at Laughs and Pier 39 San Francisco for over 40 years. Terrific entertainer of the variety arts...magic, juggling, and escape artist. PLUS, a wonderful comedy set by Dennis Wolfberg, a very funny comic. Dennis was a New York teacher turned professional comic...always thought of him as one of the funniest.

Week 4 - Character and Conduct
In this vivid and compelling narrative, the Seven Years’ War–long seen as a mere backdrop to the American Revolution–takes on a whole new significance. Relating the history of the war as it developed, Anderson shows how the complex array of forces brought into conflict helped both to create Britain’s empire and to sow the seeds of its eventual dissolution. Beginning with a skirmish in the Pennsylvania backcountry involving an inexperienced George Washington, the Iroquois chief Tanaghrisson, and the ill-fated French emissary Jumonville, Anderson reveals a chain of events that would lead to world conflagration. Weaving together the military, economic, and political motives of the participants with unforgettable portraits of Washington, William Pitt, Montcalm, and many others, Anderson brings a fresh perspective to one of America’s most important wars, demonstrating how the forces unleashed there would irrevocably change the politics of empire in North America.
It's our kind of town, so here's another episode devoted to Chicago jazzers, from scat master Kurt Elling (whose poetic sources for his vocalese Mike explains are impeccable) to tenor-slinger Von Freeman (whose views on intonation may disturb younger and more impressionable listeners). A couple more experimental offerings round out the session, which ends with Pat wondering if he loves the Beatles quite enough. Kurt Elling – LIVE IN CHICAGO; Von Freeman – DOIN’ IT RIGHT NOW; Fred Anderson – MISSING LINK; Ed Wilkerson – FREQUENCY.

Thurs., January 10 — 5:00 p.m."Our Own Dark Ages: The Colonial Period and the Story of America"Fred Anderson, University of Colorado, BoulderAndrew Cayton, Miami UniversityClick here for audio recording of the eventOver the last six decades an extraordinary efflorescence of scholarship in social, economic, and cultural history has transformed historians' understanding of North America in the century before the Declaration of Independence. It has also shattered a once-familiar story of dawning nationhood into a multitude of local stories, many of them dark and violent, difficult to relate to each other and hard to connect to the history of the United States. In their talk, Fellows Fred Anderson and Andrew Cayton will describe the framework within which they are working to assemble the fragmented stories of North American colonial development into a narrative at once consistent with modern scholarship and relevant to the national narrative recounted in later volumes of The Oxford History of the United States.Fred Anderson is professor of history at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He is the author or editor of five books, including Crucible of War: The Seven Years' War and the Fate of Empire in British North America, 1754-1766 (2000) and The Dominion of War: Empire and Liberty in North America, 1500-2000 (2005), which he wrote in collaboration with Andrew Cayton. This year, as the Archie K. Davis Fellow at the National Humanities Center, Anderson is again collaborating with Cayton on Imperial America, 1672-1764, a volume inThe Oxford History of the United States.Andrew Cayton is University Distinguished Professor of History at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He served as president of the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic in 2011-12. He is the author or editor of nine books, including Love in the Time of Revolution: Transatlantic Literary Radicalism and Historical Change, 1793-1818 (forthcoming from the University of North Carolina Press for the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture in Spring 2013). Cayton is working this year at the Center as the Frank H. Kenan Fellow.
