As the Dodgers get ready to play in the World Series this coming week, we look back at the Series they played in October of 1974 against the Oakland Athletics. It didn't go well for Los Angeles, but that didn't deter a young kid from South Pasadena who fell in love with the Dodgers as a 9-year old and has kept that love affair with the team for half a century. Mark Langill knew from a very young age that he wanted to be around baseball... and the Dodgers in particular. And so he became a sportswriter and covered the team he adored fora few years. But that wasn't enough for Langill. He wanted to be even closer to the team... a part of it if you will. And that's just what happened. The Dodgers hired him to be their team historian. Never has someone been more perfect for a position. Mark's recollection of Dodgers history is unparalleled. He can tell you about every start Don Drysdale had in August of 1968. He can tell you the date Maury Wills was traded away from the Dodgers. He can tell you what Tommy John's record was in 1974 before his season ended with a surgery that would be named after the Dodgers lefty. He can tell you more than you'll ever want to know... and he's the first to admit that he crosses that line enthusiastically. But in this case, he'll tell you about that '74 series when Mike Marshall picked off Herb Washington in Gm 2 to help secure the Dodgers lone win of the series.. He'll tell you about the throw Joe Ferguson made to nail Sal Bando at the plate in Game 1. He'll tell you about Tommy Lasorda wearing two different shoes while coaching third base. And he'll tell you how he told his favorite player, Jimmy Wynn, about a grand slam that Wynn hit that Mark never forgot... but the Toy Cannon sure did. Before there was Wikipedia, there was Mark Langill... and he's way more fun and interesting. It's time for Dodgers Baseball on the Past Our Prime podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Reset learns more about the impact this could have on Chicago area transit riders from Joe Ferguson, president of the Civic Federation. Who was Joe Ferguson? His family say he was a man on a mission. But something bothered him about Mobuoy, even after the dump was exposed. What did he know?"All you have to do... is dig it up." As they pick at the threads of one crime, they begin to see others. Could Britain be the home of a new mafia, getting rich on our waste? In a thrilling ten-part investigation, the husband-and-wife duo dive into a criminal underworld, all the time following clues left in a deathbed tape. On today's pod we sit down with former Inspector General for the City of Chicago, Joe Ferguson. We discuss a wide range of topics from the city's failure to release investigative reports generated by his former office to city council corruption to why there is not a single Inspector General Office with oversight over all of the city departments. Ferguson left office last year after a 12 year run. His tenure covered the last 2 years of the Daley administration, Rahm Emanuel's two terms, and about 60% of Mayor Lightfoot's first term. Ferguson aggressiveness in his pursuit to expose graft that is endemic to Chicago has always presented political problems for the politicians within the City Council and the Mayor's Office. About 6 years ago the City Council passed legislation creating the Deputy Public Safety Inspector General within his office that empowered the office to reach in to the Chicago Police Department & the police accountability system in Chicago and audit their activities. This has resulted in Ferguson's office publishing several groundbreaking reports about the failures of the CPD and the police accountability system. Many of which have been discussed on previous episodes featuring interview with Deputy Public Safety Inspector General Deborah Witzburg. Ferguson has been involved in Chicago politics and corruption long enough that his insight in to Mayor Lightfoot and Superintendent David Browns actions are certainly informed. The Mayor could not hid her contempt for Ferguson or the office during her short time in office. It was so bad that when she announced his permanent replacement she just couldn't help herself and had to blurt out about the need for Witzburg and the office to stay in their lane. A clear threat to not mess with the big boss. You can support our work as well as access podcast extra out our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=13274454
Former Inspector General Joe Ferguson is launching a new venture aimed at transforming, what he calls Chicago's “19th Century machine patronage culture” into a new structure of government capable of solving modern problems. After a 12-year run as city watchdog, Ferguson resigned last fall to avoid being pushed out by Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who had frozen out the IG she inherited, openly criticized him and made it clear he would not be reappointed.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Chicago's Office of the Inspector General has published many blockbuster reports over the years. Its job is to investigate corruption, misconduct, waste, fraud and abuse big and small. In recent years, it's found a culture of sexual harassment in the Chicago Fire Department, blasted the Chicago Police Department's response to summer looting in 2020, and helped U.S. Attorney John Lausch secure indictments of City Council members. But despite its importance to chipping away at city waste, the office's top post was left vacant for roughly eight months. Deborah Witzburg, this week's guest, was confirmed to take over in late April. She headed up the IG's public safety section starting in the Spring of 2020, but left when the last IG, Joe Ferguson, announced he was stepping down. She wanted the job. And she got it. But what's she in for? It's no secret that Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Ferguson had a rocky relationship in the last few months of his tenure. She suggested Ferguson wasn't staying in his lane and hadn't delivered on all of the investigations he said he would. We'll talk to Witzburg about whether she thinks the IG's office swerved out of its lane while she was there, how she plans to counter the “trust deficit” that's built up among citizens after years of Chicago corruption, and what it's like being the first woman to lead the office.

The Inspector General's office has a broad mandate. Their job is to “promote economy, effectiveness, efficiency, and integrity by identifying corruption, waste, and mismanagement in city government.” Basically, that means trying to clean up bad behavior in a city that is known for political corruption. Joe Ferguson led that office for 12 years, through three different mayors, a federal investigation of Chicago's Police Department, and numerous scandals that have revealed racism, sexism, political patronage, and resulted in indictments of sitting alder people. He retired this month. Ferguson tells us how he kept pushing for more transparency and better government (even when it seemed like nothing would change), and answers the question: Is Chicago really more corrupt than other cities? Joe Ferguson stepped down on Friday after 12 years overseeing Chicago's Office of the Inspector General, the office charged with investigating and exposing waste, fraud, abuse, mismanagement and corruption in Chicago's government. Ferguson sat down for an extensive exit interview with The Daily Line's Alex Nitkin to catalog a litany of issues he said are still undermining the public's trust in city government, from lax oversight by the City Council to structural shortcomings in the Chicago Police Department and broken promises by Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

We had so many mailbag questions today that we just focused on them. But first, we did our Sporcle challenge, wherein Jeff and Vince both take the same Sporcle quiz and then compare results. You should take the quiz now (or when Jeff gives the cue during the episode) and compare your results. Today's quiz: Can you name the Brooklyn/LA Dodgers All-Time HR Leaders? In our discussion of the quiz, we also talked about Joe Ferguson's catch and throw in the 1974 World Series, which you can watch here. And you really should watch it if you've never seen it. After the Sporcle challenge, we answered your Twitter questions, and we covered pretty much everything of interest to Dodgers fans. Todd and Brandon have their long time friend, Joe Ferguson on for a trip down musical memory lane. Joe started a rock club in Greensboro, NC in the early 2000's called Ace's Basement. Ace's went on to host countless shows featuring numerous indie rock acts from across the country and even overseas. So much of the history of the North Carolina music scene passed through Ace's Basement during this period. All of the music featured in this episode is taken directly from live performance videos that were shot within the club.
HLOM Lecture Series: Book Signing for The Bills Are Due Attica native, Rob Thompson, wrote a book called The Bills Are Due. The book pays tribute to the generation of Bills players who made them what they are today. Thompson’s interviews of players like Fred Smerlas, Billy Shaw, Joe Ferguson and JD Hill are compelling and fascinating. On September 4, 2008 Mr. Thompson and former Bill’s great JD Hill were at the Holland Land Office Museum for a book signing. Unfortunately, Mr. Thompson’s talk didn’t record, but we were successful when JD Hill came up and spoke about what it was like to be a NFL player and what he is doing today.
