Seattle Times Spikes Sophie Cunningham Trans Column Columnist Quits

The Seattle Times is in full damage-control mode after spiking a column by veteran sports writer Matt Calkins that questioned trans athletes competing in women's professional basketball — and then watching Calkins resign in protest rather than stay quiet. The WNBA world isn't letting the paper off the hook, calling the move a "horrendous look" that exposed exactly how far Seattle's media establishment will go to protect progressive orthodoxy from its own staff.Calkins had written about Sophie Cunningham — Caitlin Clark's fearless on-court enforcer — and the fairness question her presence puts front and center in women's sports. When Storm co-owner Katie Wilson and the broader Seattle institutional apparatus made the temperature too uncomfortable, the Times killed the column instead of defending its own writer. Calkins decided that was his exit. You don't spike a reporter's work and keep them; you just find out how long they'll tolerate it.This is bigger than one buried sports column. It's a snapshot of how every major institution in Seattle — the franchise, the paper, the arena politics — enforces ideological conformity on its own people until someone finally walks out the door. The fact that the WNBA world itself is calling it a horrendous look tells you how badly the Times miscalculated.CHAPTERS0:00 ‘Horrendous Look' – WNBA World Rips…1:42 Seattle Times Kills Trans Sports Column2:18 Sophie Cunningham's Role as WNBA…3:55 WNBA Forms Committee to Define Woman5:14 Matt Calkins' Suppressed Female…6:01 Sophie Cunningham: Protect Girls in…7:05 Matt Calkins Resigns After Column Is…7:44 Puyallup Female Wrestler Assaulted by…9:09 Sophie Cunningham Supporters Rally at…10:51 Storm Co-Owner Suspended After Arena…12:02 NBA Players Would Dominate the WNBA13:18 How Seattle Times Killed Calkins' Column14:28 Inside the Seattle Times' Progressive…15:58 Calkins' Other Stories Seattle Times…17:09 The WNBA's Trans Athlete Checkmate19:22 Calkins' Farewell Letter to Seattle…Subscribe to @reasonablenews for daily commentary on Pacific Northwest politics and the stories Seattle media would rather not run.#NFRP #SeattleTimes #SophieCunninghamGO PREMIUM WITH REASONABLE+ FOR UNCENSORED ACCESS

You're listening to American Ground Radio with Louis R. Avallone and Stephen Parr. This is the full show for Aguust 21, 2026. We open with a pointed examination of antisemitism and New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, arguing that his rhetoric and his choices—including naming zero Jewish lawyers to the judicial screening board despite roughly half of New York's lawyers being Jewish—amount to complicity rather than leadership, and we tie the discussion back to the unique historical and religious bond between the Jewish people and Israel. From there we hit the top three things you need to know: the Supreme Court allowing the Trump administration to continue East Wing ballroom and bunker construction, Aisha Wahab winning the special election to finish Eric Swalwell's term and becoming the first Afghan immigrant elected to Congress, and a Chinese national convicted of stealing his landlord's identity to illegally vote in Massachusetts during the 2024 election. We poke fun at Chicago's approach to violent crime, ridiculing the city's rollout of thousands of signs declaring that violence "will not be tolerated" as a substitute for real enforcement. Our American Mamas segment welcomes Teri Netterville to weigh in on sorority rush videos on TikTok, debating which style of content—natural, fun montages versus overly sexualized choreography—actually reflects well on the sisterhoods posting them. We Dig Deep into Bernie Sanders campaigning for Democratic Socialist Senate candidate Angie Nixon in Florida, arguing that a state built by anti-communist refugees from Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua is uniquely hostile territory for that message. We also cover Seattle Times sports reporter Matt Calkins' resignation after his editors spiked his column defending the separation of women's sports from transgender athletes, using it as a case study in media cowardice. We touch on an Amherst College professor's book arguing Asian American success is tied to white supremacy, then run our Fake News Friday quiz covering stories on Natalie Harp, Alina Habba, Conor Kennedy's placement on a Russian most-wanted list, and more. We close discussing New York City's planned government-run grocery stores undercutting private businesses by 30% while simultaneously funding grants to keep those same businesses afloat, and a Moment of Whoa about Middleton, Idaho naming its new elementary school "Freedom Elementary." A longtime Seattle Times sportswriter has resigned after editors declined to publish his column featuring two Washington female athletes who oppose competing against biological males. Matt Calkins, who spent 11 years at The Seattle Times, spoke with Washington In Focus Daily after his resignation story went viral. Calkins discussed why the rejected column became his final straw and argued that there is a disconnect between newsrooms and the general public. Meanwhile, the Washington Supreme Court has rejected an appeal challenging the Public Investment Impact Disclosure statement that will accompany Initiative 645, the November ballot measure seeking to repeal Washington's new income tax. Critics argue the disclosure could influence how voters perceive the financial consequences of repealing the tax. And Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson is facing another difficult poll. New results show her favorability falling sharply from April as public safety remains a major concern among Seattle voters. Wilson is also facing a recall petition, with a court hearing approaching. Washington In Focus Daily breaks down all three stories and what they could mean heading into Washington's November election. #SeattleTimes #KatieWilson #WashingtonState #WAPolitics #SeattleNews #WashingtonNews #GirlsSports #IncomeTax #I645 #SeattlePolitics #WashingtonSupremeCourt #PublicSafety #TheCenterSquare Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. It's easy to get lost in the AI gold rush exploding around the globe. On this episode of The Reboot Chronicles Show, Appian CEO Matt Calkins explains why AI's greatest value isn't about replacing humans, but about helping organizations work faster or smarter. Now it is time for a moment of truth about the basic value of AI.A great American entrepreneurial growth story, Matt has grown Appian from a scrappy basement startup to the most successful software IPO of 2017 with only $10 million of pre IPO capital. Most CEOs don't raise capital so efficiently before going public—which is one reason we wanted him on the show. I guess also because Dean did the same thing, as the CEO of Autoweb, which he took public at a billion-dollar valuation. It's a small club…but getting bigger with AI companies. This rapidly growing group now has a $2B market cap and thousands of employees that have rebooted into a ‘Process AI' firm built to enable a ‘worker' model for organizations.Hot off the heels of their World Conference, where they unpacked the future of tech, and how to put AI to work, Matt cuts through the hype to help us peer around corners with a realistic take on what's next for our organizations and our lives.
