They also enjoy experimenting with their diets and seeing how their metabolic markers change - so far Matt has done 3 months of ketogenic diet and 10 days of whole food plant-based diet. But most of all, they enjoy spending time with their co-residents in the wonderful city that is Winston-Salem! (2:00) There is a pandemic in metabolic health that needs to be addressed. (9:00) Some people have taken better control by using a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) to see immediate results of how certain foods affect them. Vinnie suggests that there needs to be a lot more doctors that are coming into the system with better nutritional knowledge. (13:30) There needs to be continued advocation for low-carb lifestyles; Vinnie hopes that incoming doctors will "right the ship." Vinnie asks what Laura and Matt are seeing as they start their careers in medicine. Laura has trained directly under prominent low-carb doctors. Vinnie believes that it's necessary for intelligent discourse among doctors. Matt shares a couple of points about T2D and outpatient treatment that are important for success, even from 5 years ago. (35:20) They talk about how today's medical curriculum still needs to be updated. They also emphasize the need to create a "new normal" of people not needing so many medications. They discuss how policies like "Meatless Mondays" in schools are bad policies; the people become an experiment. (49:00) There have been cases where children have died from being on a vegan diet from lack of proper nutrients; as a result, there are places in Europe that have banned children from being put on vegan diets. Matt is an emergency medicine resident who loves  studying the science of longevity, the optimization of all phases of health, and applying his knowledge to physician and patient wellness. Matt earned his M.D. from the University of Florida and holds a B.Sc. in physics. In their conversation, Brian, Matt, and Laura talk about how each of them came to realize the power of the low-carb diet, the many benefits of the direct primary care model of healthcare for both doctors and patients, how to motivate and empower patients to take control of their own health, how the predominate health care model in the United States could be better described as a sick care model, how the low-carb/keto diet and the DPC model might be able to make more of a breakthrough into the mainstream, the power of lifestyle/dietary intervention for mental health and mood, the difficulties involved in going through residency, and physician-burnout statistics. Life's Best Medicine According to Matt: “I get a lot of fulfillment out of leaving things in a better state than I found them—even if it's incremental. That's why I like primary care. You don't have to change someone's lifestyle all in one day, but we can really be fulfilled in the small day-to-day changes that patients make.” Life's Best Medicine According to Laura: “It's the relationships—the people in my life. That's family, first and foremost, friends, even patients, and the people you encounter on a regular basis. All of those relationships make me excited to be alive. And if I can help make their lives better too then that is a win-win.” Thank you for listening. Have a blessed day and stay healthy!   Links:   Drs. (25:00) The group also discusses some of the newest challenges, like worsening iron deficiency in patients. The Seattle Seahawks offense bounced back after six straight quarters of failing to score as we saw a unit that can at least put up points against sub-par defenses. Defensively for Seattle, it appears to be a different story. Are they a broken unit? Or can Pete Carroll and Clint Hurtt find a way to get the guys in position to at least stop the run? Seattle will give us a chance to help us answer those questions again this week as they go up against a very similar team to the Falcons. The Detroit Lions defense is among the worst (if not the worst) in the league and they have solid pass catchers and a strong run game when they're healthy. But with injuries to key players on the Lions offense, could we see the Seahawks defense step up? In the second half of the show, we enjoy some 49ers vs Broncos schadenfreude. We may have a new segment for the show as Adam continues to forget to make his picks ahead of the games. LowCarbUSA®  Founder and CEO Doug Reynolds recently had an encouraging conversation with Tro Kalayjian, DO and Laura Buchanan, MD, MHP, about developing low-carb/keto resources for practitioners and patients. The interview is now available as Episode 95 of the LowCarbUSA® podcast. Dr. Tro is on the Board of Directors of the Society of Metabolic Health Practitioners (The SMHP) and a well-known practitioner in the world of therapeutic carbohydrate restriction (TCR) and metabolic health. He runs Tro's Medical Weight Loss & Direct Primary Care in Tappan, NY. Laura Buchanan recently completed her third year of residency and has joined The SMHP board of directors, with a goal of helping to to provide resources for future medical students and residents, whose careers could be shaped by having more formal education about how TCR can be used to treat obesity, reverse type 2 diabetes, and improve metabolic health.  Laura recently joined Dr. Tro's practice, where she began seeing patients just last week. Doug spoke with Tro and Laura about their hopes of developing a community where practitioners, many of whom are working in solo practices, can work cooperatively to create information, policies, and support systems to make it easier and more efficient to build a business that can help greater numbers of patients.  “I've always been passionate about developing information doctors can use to better serve their patients,” said Dr. Tro. “The question we need to ask is how can we work together in a way that makes the process easier and more efficient? An important part of that involves providing more resources and opportunities for new doctors.” In an article published last March (https://thesmhp.org/low-carb-couple-smhp/), Laura and her husband, Dr. Matt Calkins, spoke with The SMHP about the lack of education medical students receive in the area of nutrition, especially anything related to low-carb or ketogenic diets.  They are both members of The SMHP's Resources Committee (Matt is the committee chair), which was formed to curate resources on nutrition and metabolic health, and then work with medical students, residencies, and clinicians to integrate them into their educational programs and daily practices. During the podcast interview, Laura explained how she relied on the LowCarbMD podcast over the past several years to learn about TCR. The hope is that future medical students will be able to learn about these therapies as part of their formal curriculum, and that easy-to-access information, supported by scientific evidence and reliable research, will be available to any practitioner who needs it.  The interview provides a great deal of reason for optimism, as opportunities in the world of TCR become more accessible to new doctors like Laura.   Dr. Tro and Laura detailed many of the successes that are occurring everyday for patients, including drastic weight loss, reductions in A1C, reversal of type 2 diabetes, and de-prescription of medications. On a more sobering note, they discussed the many challenges doctors face, including insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, and food manufacturers. Perhaps most discouraging was the news that the West Virginia hospital Dr. Mark Cucuzzella convinced to stop selling sugary beverages, recently reversed that decision.

If Walker doesn't want Mark to speak to excess, he really shouldn't be teeing him up by asking about Macross. Or Robotech either, because the difference thereto is a whole discussion unto itself. Of course, Walker is an accomplished troll, willing to return to any subject once raised. Mark has repeatedly been exhorted to not feed trolls, but really, that's just blaming the victim. At this point it's mostly just mutual trolling, like an ouroboros of nonsense. How do you make a great hire? Matt Calkins: In order to make a great hire there are a couple of steps. One is finding and motivating the potential employee to work with you. And I don't want to focus on that, because I think it's relatively obvious how you do that. You raise your profile, you meet people, you work the channel, you ask your employees for contacts, those things are pretty well known. I think I'll instead focus on how you select the individual that you want to hire. How do you know who you should bring on? Here's what I look for. It's my formula. I look for people who have a great deal of talent. And you can tell that by talking with them, exploring the things they care about, looking at their resume, looking at their job trajectory. All that will give you a sense of their talent. It's relatively easy to tell that compared to the other things you have to detect. Second, you want to be sure that they are a good fit with your culture. In Appian's case we look for people who are harmonious with each other, generous with their time, rally around a goal, and positive energy. Third, you look for people who are habitually successful. The things that they do, and I don't necessarily mean jobs, I mean their hobbies. I mean whatever they've chosen to put their time into, are they successful? Can you see not just the expenditure of time but the achievement with it? I love to ask people about their hobbies, about their interests. And see how well they've explored that interest and whether they've done anything with their time on that. So you could see it in their jobs if that's what they're focused on, you see it in a hobby. But I'm looking for people who have a habit of excellence, who have a tradition of it, who exude so much excellence, it just comes out in every direction. And wherever they touch something they want to make it better, they want to create something great. So I'm looking for this habit of excellence. Those are my three things, talent, culture fit, and a habit of excellence.

Incredibly sad news this past week as we learned of the passing of Seahawks Hall of Fame defensive tackle Cortez Kennedy. Kennedy passed away at the age of 48. Adam and Brandan bring on former Seahawks defensive back Nesby Glasgow to talk about his memories of Tez as well as his memories of finishing off his career in a Seahawks uniform. In other Seahawks news from the past week, Colin Kaepernick made a visit to Seattle in addition to another backup prospect Austin Davis. Is it time we start, at the very least, considering the idea that Kap may be the Seahawks backup quarterback? Michael Bennett had Kapernick's back this past week and his support found him in a Twitter war with Stephen A. Smith. That wasn't the only fight he got into with a highly opinionated member of the media as Matt Calkins of the Seattle Times took some shots at him, which Bennett responded by advocating a boycott of the local newspaper. Bennett also called an article by Seth Wickersham of ESPN "trash," after the reporter clearly went out of his way to try and pit Richard Sherman against Russell Wilson.  The guys go through the article and talk about what was worthwhile in the article as it tries to explain some of the reasons behind why Sherman hasn't gotten over the Super Bowl loss. The title of Flocktimus Maximus goes to DCH this week, who is helping us with our latest piece of equipment for the show. Accuracy of reports coming out of Montana's special election get a big do better as well as a guy who got Adam into a high speed pursuit on I-90. HAWKS PLAYBOOK PODCAST EPISODE 12  - CAMP BATTLES OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE LINES  Coach Tom Cable has indicated his initial desire to move Mark Glowinski from Left Guard, where he took his snaps in 2016, over to the Right Guard position in 2017.  His spot on that side may end up being contingent on the battle to take place at Right Tackle between Germain Ifedi and newcomer, Ethan Pocic, who Seattle acquired in April’s NFL Draft.  Cable says he wants the best 5 linemen on the field, and that still may mean that the loser of the RT position battle, still may be one of the best five, and end up taking the Right Guard spot.  Does this sound a bit complicated?
