Nils Mockler joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17, only because they wouldn't let him join when he was 16. Upon enlisting in 1944, Mockler completed boot camp and was soon tapped as a combat intelligence scout. He also dabbled in explosives as you'll hear. After more training in Hawaii, Mockler and many other Marines left for Iwo Jima, where they would land in February 1945 and become part of one of the most vicious battles in the entire war.In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Mockler takes us on board his ship as the battle plans were opened up and military planners thought Iwo Jima wold be a two-day mission. He also shares his experience coming ashore on D+1 and the fierce Japanese resistance he and the other Marines faces. Mockler also describes the battle-hardened unit he was attached to, the apprehension of sitting in his foxhole through the night in anticipation of Japanese attacks, and watching the cemetery of American service members grow far beyond what the battle planners could have imagined. And he describes the exhiliration of watching the American flag raised atop Mount Suribachi.

It's one of his most beloved tales, but was written in a hurry and under duress. On this holiday episode of Dialogue, Marcia Franklin talks with Boise writer Samantha Silva about "A Christmas Carol," penned by Charles Dickens in 1843. In her debut novel, "Mr. Dickens and His Carol," Silva melds fact with fiction to imagine how Dickens came up with the plot for his now-classic story. Of Silva's work, Pulitzer Prize-winner and Boise resident Anthony Doerr says, "It's as foggy and haunted and redemptive as the original; it's all heart, and I read it in a couple of ebullient, Christmassy gulps." Silva talks with Franklin about what drew her to Dickens, how she researched her book, why she thinks "A Christmas Carol" crystallizes Dickens' ethos, and why the story is still relevant. A graduate of Boise State University and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Silva is a screenwriter who has sold projects to Paramount, Universal, New Line Cinema, and TNT. A film version of her short story, "The Big Burn," won the One Potato Short Screenplay Competition at the 2017 Sun Valley Film Festival and will be released in 2018. Silva will also be writing another novel.

Today's Case A 40-year-old female presents for follow up of hypertension that started 2 years ago. She has been seen frequently in your clinic for titration of her antihypertensive medication and treatment of recently diagnosed hyperlipidemia and type 2 diabetes mellitus. During her visit she reveals that she is frustrated by weight gain that has occurred predominately over the past year. She reports regular menstrual cycles until the past year, when she notes increased time in between cycles and occasional spotting instead of regular periods. She is concerned that she may have early menopause because she is having changes in appetite, difficulty sleeping, and mood swings. She feels like these symptoms are getting worse, and she is frustrated that despite her increase in exercise and change in diet she is more fatigued and has experienced no weight loss. El viernes pasado Netflix anunció un acuerdo para adquirir las divisiones de estudios de cine y televisión y el servicio de streaming HBO Max de Warner Bros por 72.000 millones de dólares, un importe que asciende a los 82.700 millones si incluimos la deuda. La transacción, en efectivo y acciones, valora cada acción de Warner Bros en 27,75 dólares, es decir, por encima de lo que se están pagando en el mercado. Esta operación, aprobada ya por los consejos de ambas compañías, se concretará tras la separación de los activos de redes de cable de Warner (CNN, TNT y Discovery Channel) que conformarán una nueva sociedad llamada Discovery Global. El acuerdo se materializará en unos meses cuando haya pasado el filtro regulatorio. El anuncio es un capítulo más una intensa batalla de ofertas iniciada en septiembre de este año, cuando Paramount Global, presidida por David Ellison, el hijo del dueño de Oracle, Larry Ellison, se ofreció a comprar la compañía en su totalidad. Respaldado por fondos soberanos de Oriente Medio y con lazos con la administración Trump, Paramount ofrecía 30 dólares por acción. Su objetivo era fortalecer Paramount+ sumándole el amplio catálogo de Warner para competir con gigantes como Disney y Netflix. Ellison no se ha dado por vencido. HBO, fundada en 1972 como un canal premium de cable especializado en series y películas, aporta un archivo inmenso de más de 50 años de producción televisiva. Con presencia en todo el mundo, la fusión crearía una inmensa plataforma de video a la demanda ya que suma los 300 millones de suscriptores de Netflix a los 128 millones de HBO Max y Discovery+. Esto potenciará la retención de usuarios, permitirá reajustes de precios y afectará de lleno a la producción cinematográfica. El acuerdo plantea una serie de interrogantes regulatorios que podrían frustrar la operación. A eso mismo se agarra Paramount, que ha presionado intensamente en Washington acercándose al equipo de Trump. Para Netflix no está todo perdido. El regulador es independiente y ya en el pasado falló a favor de fusiones similares. El hecho es que en un mercado hipercompetitivo en el que Netflix se mantiene a la cabeza pero pierde terreno ante YouTube y Twitch (gratuitos y financiados con publicidad), esta fusión redefine el sector. En principio HBO Max se mantendrá, pero no sabemos durante cuanto tiempo y si seguirá explotando en exclusiva su catálogo. Para los consumidores se reduce el abanico de elección de plataforma y quizá suban los precios. En Hollywood, entretanto, asumen que la industria del entretenimiento es cosa ya de las grandes tecnológicas que poco a poco han terminado haciéndose dueñas de todo. With all precincts reporting, Gaddis secured 698 votes (64.15%) to Gaudet’s 390 (35.85%). The results will be certified Dec. 8. “It’s been a long road, but we worked hard and had incredible support,” Gaddis said, reflecting on a campaign that reached over 3,500 voters. Still, he admitted the race wasn’t without challenges, particularly the push to label him politically. “Parks, sidewalks, public safety—these aren’t partisan issues,” he said. Break 1: GCPS Hiring STORY 1: Lake Lanier Association Completes Phase Three of Shoreline Protection Program  Lake Lanier’s shoreline just got a little more secure—5,280 feet of it, to be exact. The Lake Lanier Association (LLA) announced the completion of the third phase of Project Armor, its ongoing effort to fight erosion caused by heavy boat traffic. This phase reinforced 16 badly eroded areas with rip rap, a method that helps absorb wave energy and protect the shoreline. Over the past 12 years, the LLA has armored 3 miles of shoreline, saving 28 islands and areas from disappearing into the lake. Why does it matter? These islands aren’t just pretty—they’re vital. They provide wildlife habitats, beaches, and safe spots for fishing and recreation. Without protection, some islands have already vanished, and erosion is making the lake shallower, threatening both recreation and the drinking water supply for over 5 million Georgians. This project, supported by partners like the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and local counties, is far from over. With 12 million visitors a year, Lake Lanier’s waves aren’t slowing down anytime soon. STORY 2: Hilscher wins another term in Suwanee City Council  Suwanee City Councilwoman Beth Hilscher is sticking around for another four years after edging out David Martinez in Tuesday’s runoff for the Post 4 seat. Unofficial results show Hilscher pulled in 734 votes to Martinez’s 638. Suwanee wasn’t the only Gwinnett city with a runoff—Duluth voters also hit the polls to decide the Post 3 City Council race between incumbent Lamar Doss and challenger Marlene Denise Tucker. In Suwanee, it’s Hilscher who’s celebrating. STORY 3: Police aim to deter youth gun violence in slain officer's memory   Gwinnett County police have rolled out a new program aimed at steering kids away from guns while honoring Officer Antwan Toney, who was tragically killed in the line of duty seven years ago. Called Toney’s Program, it launched in September and focuses on first-time or minor handgun offenses among juveniles. The program, named after Toney—who was shot by a teen in 2018—pairs participants with mentors for a seven-week curriculum and three months of follow-up support. Families are involved too, attending sessions alongside their kids. Teens hear from gun violence victims and learn conflict resolution, emotional awareness, and nonviolent decision-making. We’ll be right back Break 2: 07.14.22 KIA MOG- DTL HOLIDAY STORY 4: Snellville man convicted of attacking former basketball teammates   A Snellville man, just 20 years old, is headed to prison for 25 years after a string of violent attacks on his former high school basketball teammates. Jet Horne, once a senior on South Gwinnett High’s 2022-23 team, was convicted last week on a laundry list of charges—aggravated assault, firearm possession, criminal damage, even hijacking a car. The incidents? Three separate attacks between December 2024 and May 2025. In December, Horne ambushed Talal Ansah, shooting him eight times as he returned home from work. Ansah barely survived. Then, in March, Horne fired into Timair Walker’s car, injuring a neighbor with a stray bullet. By May, he escalated—holding Maalik Leitch at gunpoint, stealing his BMW, and leading police on a chase. Ballistics tied it all together, sealing Horne’s fate. “This was a violent, senseless series of crimes,” said DA Patsy Austin-Gatson. “We’re grateful for justice and continue to pray for the victims.” STORY 5: BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Dacula Keeps Rolling with Lopsided Win Dacula cruised past Jackson County on Tuesday night, dominating with an 82-58 win in boys basketball. Case Presley was unstoppable, racking up 20 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists. Josh Brown added 15 points, six boards, and four steals, while Dorian Douglas chipped in 15 points, five steals, and four assists. Kenny LaRue (nine points, six assists), Luke Anderson (nine points), and Caleb Golding (nine points, four rebounds) rounded out the Falcons’ balanced attack. Dacula now sits at 6-1 on the season. ATLANTA FALCONS: The Falcons, with six losses in their last seven games, will take on the Seahawks, who’ve won six of their last seven.
