The history of the University of Washington football program is filled with tradition, success, and a dedicated fan base. Founded in 1889, the University of Washington is located in Seattle, and its football team, known as the Washington Huskies, has become one of the most storied programs in college football.Football was introduced to the University of Washington shortly after its founding, with the first game played in 1889 against the University of Idaho. The team rapidly developed, achieving notable successes in the early 1900s under head coach Gil Dobie, who led the Huskies to an impressive 58-game undefeated streak from 1907 to 1917. This remarkable run solidified the football program's reputation and brought national attention to the university. The 1920s and 1930s were highlighted by the Huskies' emergence as a force in college football, culminating in their first-ever Rose Bowl appearance in 1924. Coached by Enoch Bagshaw, the team won the Rose Bowl, defeating the Navy Midshipmen 14-14 (the game ended in a tie). The Huskies returned to the Rose Bowl in 1926, 1936, and 1944, further establishing themselves as a perennial contender in the Pacific Coast Conference (now known as the Pac-12).One of the most influential figures in the history of UW football is Don James. Serving as head coach from 1975 to 1992, James led the Huskies to tremendous success. Under his guidance, the team won numerous conference titles, appeared in numerous Rose Bowls, and captured the national championship in the 1991 season after defeating the Michigan Wolverines in the Rose Bowl. His impact on the program and his dedication to academic and athletic excellence earned him the nickname "The Dawgfather" among Husky fans.In the 21st century, the University of Washington football program has continued to enjoy success, with appearances in major bowl games, conference championships, and producing NFL-caliber talent. Coaches like Chris Petersen have maintained the program's competitive spirit and commitment to developing student-athletes on and off the field.Throughout its history, Husky Stadium has been the iconic home venue for the Washington Huskies. Overall, the University of Washington football program has demonstrated a remarkable dedication to excellence, producing numerous All-Americans, future NFL stars, and maintaining a passionate fan base. With a history filled with memorable moments and a commitment to building a strong future, the Washington Huskies remain a significant presence in the world of college football.A special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at:     https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comIf you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute, please visit: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comTo keep up on news for the podcast and other related announcements, please like and follow:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastFind the podcast over on Instagram as well: @HISTORY_EVERGREENSTATEPODCASTYou can also find the podcast over on YouTube:http://www.youtube.com/@historyoftheevergreenstatepodThank you for listening to another episode of the History of the Evergreen State Podcast!

Former KJR personality Mike Gastineau, "The Gas Man", came to Seattle in early 1991, so he had a front row seat to see what that Husky team was able to do. Now, 30 years later, he has endeavored to give Husky fans and the rest of the nation a closer look at what that team was all about. His relationship with Hall-of-Fame coach Don James, James' wife Carol, as well as some of the players and other coaches associated with that team has allowed him to pull back the curtain, so to speak, and tell the backstories of what went on during that magical season. Dawgman's Kim Grinolds sat down with "The Gas Man" recently and got the chance to get the scoop on why Gastineau decided to write the book, what it meant as far as all of the information and his interviews with the players and coaches who made history. From the letdown of the 1990 season to the offseason of work the players and coaches put in to the epic win over Nebraska in Lincoln to their close call against Cal in Strawberry Canyon, Gastineau takes you through everything in his book "Fear No Man" that is required reading for any true Husky fan. Pastor Don reminds us, "It's the purpose of the church to own the mission of God and to take the gospel to the whole world." Don James currently serves as the Superintendent of the New Jersey Ministry Network (NJMN) located in Burlington, NJ. Prior to this position, he had served 44 years in pastoral ministry, while also serving 17 years as the Assistant Superintendent of the NJMN. Over the years he has served (and currently serves) on multiple boards having to do with world missions. Anyone who has spent time in Don’s presence knows that he has one of the biggest hearts for missions.

We're starting to step up our one-on-one podcast game, and we figured we'd go back all the way to the beginning of Washington's Golden Era for football. That coincides with the start of the Don James Era, so Dawgman's Kim Grinolds tracked down one of James's early team captains, Mike Rohrbach. Rohrbach was one of four captains of the 1977 Washington Football team that won the 1978 Rose Bowl, joining Warren Moon, Blair Bush, and Dave Browning. After school, Rohrbach joined the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and came back in 1989 as the volunteer chaplain of the UW Football team, a position he held until 2005. Mike is also the current volunteer chaplain for the men's basketball team, something he's done since 2004. But his day job is Run to Win, an outreach that he created with his wife Karen for the last 29 years. Their goal is to bring communities together through chaplaincy and sports, offering up summer camps to help children learn and grow. Grinolds and Rohrbach go back to Mike's childhood love of Washington Football and his recruitment to Washington out of Ingraham High School. He came to Montlake at a time when Jim Owens was heading out and Don James was taking over, so Rohrbach talked about the unique aspect of playing for both legends. He also reminisced about certain players and coaches like Randy Hart, Dan Lloyd, Dave Pear, Blair Bush, Ray Pinney, Nesby Glasgow, Michael Jackson, Antowaine Richardson, Mike Baldassin, Warren Moon, Joe Steele, and more. As the volunteer chaplain for men's basketball, Rohrbach also talked from his perspective on the inside watching the hoops transition from Lorenzo Romar to Mike Hopkins. Finally, Rohrbach provides more insight into Run to Win and how people can participate in their outreach. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Originally released in November 2013, this is the absolute last original episode from the archives that we can post. And to be honest I didn't want to release this one because the sound quality is not up to our current standards. But I've had it cleaned up a bit by Steve Blizin of the Drift and Ramble podcast (check his show out on iTunes, it's awesome), and I think it's ready to be heard (again). At the very least, it's here for continuity, and it has historical value (to show what we used to sound like, I guess). Here's our cast: Dana Gonsalves as Larry Halder, Micah Blain as Lieutenant Rodson, Wendy Sauer as Mildred, Pete Lutz as Tony Cintrella, Geri Elliff as Clara Lorn, and Andres Elizondo II as Nick Tanner.  Additional voices were supplied by Kevin Schuster, Larry Hutchison, and Jordan Bruster-Campo....Your announcer was Lisa Ayala. ”What Bleeds is What Leads” was originally published as the short story “Red Dawn” by Don James, and appeared in the September 1946 issue of “Dime Mystery Magazine”.  It was adapted by Pete Lutz, who also directed and produced this program.
