Daily DLP: Breaking down Lions rookie QB Luke Altmyer Detroit Lions Podcast

The Detroit Lions Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 9, 2026 26:26

A focused look at QB3 The Detroit Lions Podcast zeroed in on undrafted rookie quarterback Luke Altmyer. The Illinois product brings a steady profile that fits what Detroit asks from its quarterbacks. His case touches roster mechanics, scheme continuity, and how the Lions want to survive a Sunday if Jared Goff misses snaps. The first puzzle is numbers. The Lions have not typically carried three quarterbacks on the 53. Recent practice has leaned on the practice squad and the emergency quarterback elevation. That path likely remains in play. Teddy Bridgewater sits as QB2 for 2026. His last outing in a Lions uniform was rough, but his value is clear. He is smart, efficient, and comfortable in the pocket in the way Goff is. That sets the bar for Altmyer. If QB3 mirrors the starter's operation, the offense changes less when called upon. Altmyer's traits fit the offense Altmyer's game wins with anticipation, accuracy, touch, and a willingness to stand in and deliver. He has extensive experience in a pro-style offense and makes NFL anticipatory throws. He protects the ball and rarely puts it at risk when structure holds. The arm is not dynamic and he is undersized. The release is lower and slower than ideal. He must protect himself better. He absorbed some massive hits at Illinois, a byproduct of patience while routes developed behind an uneven offensive line. Those are teachable survival skills. There is meaningful overlap with Goff's profile. Altmyer processes quickly, shows poise, and works the pocket with calm urgency. He can hit the throws the system demands and maintain accuracy on the move. He posted seven game-winning drives late in games and finished second in program history in wins and touchdown passes. He is a cleaner operator than a playmaker, which is exactly what the Lions ask from their quarterbacks. How he sticks in Detroit Altmyer expected to be drafted and carries a clear chip on his shoulder. Detroit liked the makeup. Dan Campbell praised his retention and daily improvement. The staff highlighted his command of calls, shifts, and motions, and that he is not overwhelmed by install. Altmaier chose Detroit in part to work with Drew Petzing and after a positive Senior Bowl week with Marcus Tuiasosopo. The near-term lane is obvious. QB3 via the practice squad with elevations as needed. Win preseason reps by running the offense cleanly. Protect himself. Keep the ball safe. If he meets those checkpoints, he has a real chance to stick in 2026 and position himself for QB2 in 2027. For a Detroit Lions roster built on clarity and cohesion, Altmaier's profile makes football sense. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #lukealtmyer #teddybridgewater #jaredgoff #qb3 #scoutingreport #lionsotas Learn more about your ad choices. Daily DLP: Hard Look at 2024 Draft Class Entering Year 3 - Detroit Lions Podcast

The Detroit Lions Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 26, 2026 29:17

A draft class searching for traction The Detroit Lions Podcast put the 2024 draft class under a harsh light. Two years in, the group has flashed but not finished. The Detroit Lions need more in the NFL's tight margins. This feels like a prove-it season for the entire class, headlined by first-round pick Terryon Arnold at No. 24 overall after a trade up with Dallas from 28. Terryon Arnold needs consistent CB1 tape Arnold has shown it in stretches. Early last year he looked the part outside. Midseason he matured. He played less handsy. He read the receiver better. Then came the injury. Then penalties. Then a general lack of effectiveness. He has not played like a first-rounder yet. The expectation remains that he opens 2026 as a starting outside cornerback. The benefit of the doubt is fading. He has one more season before the fifth-year option decision becomes straightforward or complicated. The Dallas trade context matters Detroit paid a first and a third to move up for Arnold. Those Dallas picks turned into Tyler Guyton and Cooper Beebe. Guyton has started at tackle and shown an inconsistent but impressive profile. Beebe has started at center and been decent, short of high expectations. No one knows if the Lions would have made the same choices. They did spend time with Beebe at the Senior Bowl. Viewed through that prism, the move has not produced the intended return yet in Detroit. Ennis Rakestraw's availability and a crowded slot Rakestraw has played eight games in two years. Multiple injuries hit both seasons, echoing a college pattern where timing hurt his offseasons more than his Saturdays. This is a big year for him. The room around him has tightened. Detroit drafted Keith Abney in that spot and signed Roger McCreery there. Christian Risdon and Avante Maddox can play slot nickel. Outside, they brought Brockus back. Nick Whiteside is back, and to this point he has shown more in coverage than Rakestraw. The challenge is clear. Day 3 pieces still seeking a spark Giovanni Manu arrived as an offensive lineman from British Columbia in the fourth. Also in the fourth, Vaki was listed as a safety at Utah but Detroit drafted him to play running back, a role he handled at Utah and at the Senior Bowl. In the sixth, Mangin Wingo came in at defensive tackle from LSU. The Lions also added guard Chris Mahogany from Boston College. Collectively, the group has been underwhelming and frustrating. There is time, but not much, for this class to match the standard set elsewhere on the roster. The 2026 tape has to change the story. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #terrionarnold #ennisrakestraw #giovannimanu #2024nfldraft #mekhiwingo #christianmahogany #sionevaki Learn more about your ad choices. Tackle priority and Blake Miller's floor The Detroit Lions Podcast zeroed in on why offensive tackle felt likely going into the NFL draft. The class at tackle was top heavy. Options like Morgan Freeling and Proctor were in the mix. Detroit landed Blake Miller. Miller brings more than 50 plus starts. He shows lateral quickness for a big frame. The question is ceiling. Can he become a dominant force or is he a steady pro? The discussion leaned toward a very respectable starter. Solid baseline. Reasonable risk. Clear need met. Derek Moore's motor and rush upside Derek Moore drew differing opinions after Senior Bowl looks. The tape shows a high motor. Power at contact. Strong, active hands. He finishes when he wins early. The rush potential pops more than the all around game right now. That profile still checks Lions boxes. Effort. Physicality. Inside hands. Moore fits the rotation and can scale up if the pass rush package tightens. The bet is on juice and refinement. The value aligns with where Detroit picked. Nickel value, late finds, and roles Keith Abney was the surprise slider, landing at 157. Short, not small. Instinctive. Natural mover in coverage. Some label him a nickel only. That role matters. In today's NFL, the nickel is a twelfth starter. Detroit's corner group has battled injuries. There are questions about Branch health. The pick matches need and value. Jimmy Rolder brings Michigan production despite a short starting run. Efficient and smart. A clean GPS to the football. That helps special teams and depth right away, with room to grow on defense. Kendrick Law offers a defined path. Many of his catches came behind the line. He is a YAC threat. He did not always maximize his gifts, but the special teams prowess can track a roster spot while the route tree expands. Inside, Tyree West arrives from Tennessee at defensive tackle. The room adds a penetrator type in Skylar Gil Howard out of Texas Tech. That pairing gives the front more get off and disruption angles in sub packages. This Detroit Lions draft matched the board to the blueprint. Tackle security with Miller. Rush traits with Moore. Nickel utility with Abney. Role clarity for Law, West, and Skylar Gil Howard. A respectable class that fits how the Lions want to play. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #2026nfldraft #blakemiller #ericedholm #lionsdefense #ennisrakestraw #benjohnson #nfcnorth #nflpowerrankings Learn more about your ad choices. Green Bay's Draft Without Pick No. 1 The Detroit Lions Podcast put the NFC North under the microscope. Green Bay navigated the 2026 NFL Draft without a first-round pick. Inside the room, they essentially treated Micah Parsons as that missing top selection. It framed every other choice and every roster bet. That context matters for Detroit Lions fans sizing up the division. Scouting and process took center stage. The conversation cut through recycled big boards and highlighted year-round work. Senior Bowl trips. Shrine practices back when they were in St. Petersburg. Long lists stacked against real tape. Original evaluations, not echoes. That lens set up a blunt look at how Green Bay built its board and why. Micah Parsons and the Ten-Month ACL Clock The timetable was clear. The modern ACL return is a ten-month arc from injury to full snap load. Map that to the NFL calendar and the target becomes around Week Five. Expect a roster stash to start. The assumption is the PUP list to open the season, then a ramp-up to real usage. Expectations were once sky-high. A defensive coach even floated league-leading sack potential before leaving for the Miami job. Reality now lives in checkpoints, not headlines. That timeline shapes how Detroit prepares to block, chip, and slide protections when the calendar turns. It also mirrors a familiar Detroit thread. Brian Branch's earlier injury surfaced as a reference point for working backward from health, not hype. The New PUP Rule and Week Five Targets The NFL tweaked the PUP rules, and it changes the math. Previously, players on PUP could not practice with the team for four weeks. Now the no-practice window is two weeks. After that, teams can designate to return and build a two-week ramp while the player remains on PUP. For a contender, that is roster flexibility. For the Detroit Lions, it is a calendar to monitor across the division. Layer in Green Bay's broader injury picture. Devonte Wyatt is on track. Tucker Craft's timing aligns with the start of training camp, with Week One availability expected. Extension talks are in line for him. Jordan Riley ruptured an Achilles. That points to season-long IR unless there is a settlement. Given the severity, the incentive is to keep him around and let the rehab run its course. What It Means Around the North The Packers' first-round void, the Parsons clock, and the PUP tweak all converge on the same conclusion. September snaps will look different than October snaps. Week Five becomes a circle date. The Detroit Lions will plan protections and personnel with that in mind. The NFL is a timeline league. Health windows decide matchups as much as schemes. Today's recap keeps the calendar front and center for Detroit and the division. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #nflpuplist #packersdraft #micahparsonsacl #brandoncisse #keithabney #jagerburton #danidennis-sutton Learn more about your ad choices. Max prepped at Urbandale High School, and was self proclaimed 'trash' at sports. We catch up with him just 1 week after being drafted by the Miami Dolphins. He recounts his journey from being an undersized, uncoordinated high school freshman who got benched by his dad to becoming an Iowa defensive lineman and getting drafted by the Dolphins. He describes quitting other sports to focus on gaining weight, battling injuries, learning Iowa's fundamentals and disciplined defensive philosophy, and developing his own pass-rush “chess game” inspired by players like Maxx Crosby and Aidan Hutchinson, including the spin move that helped build his confidence. Luellin shares the stress of the Senior Bowl/combine interview grind, uncertainty about draft rounds, and the moment his name was called, plus favorite plays like his Nebraska strip sack. He also discusses NIL/transfer outreach, extreme calorie strategies (including notorious shakes), and his upcoming Dolphins rookie minicamp as Miami shifts to a 4-3. High-floor bet on Blake Miller at 17 The Detroit Lions Podcast used May 4 to cut through the noise on NFL draft grades and focus on fit. The theme was steady floor over splash. Blake Miller at No. 17 fits that. He arrives as a ready-to-play NFL starting right tackle. Clemson ran a pro style offense. He worked next to an in-line tight end. He protected a pocket passer in Cade Klubnik, who could move some but played structure. That background matters for Detroit's plan up front. Miller's presence helps mitigate Jared Goff's biggest limitation, mobility. A sturdy offensive line keeps the offense on schedule. The Lions had that baseline before last season and aim to restore it. Miller projects as a dependable answer, much like Taylor Decker in profile even if he plays the opposite side. Expect a couple snaps each game where you want a little more. That is life picking 17th, not in the top 10. The trade-off is reliability. The show also noted he was in the mix when picking a favorite Lions selection this year. Derek Moore's quick wins reshape the edge room Derek Moore brings another sturdy floor. Usage at Michigan was odd. He could make a splash play, then sit a series and a half. Coaching and deployment did not always match his strengths. Even so, the traits are clear. He is a quick-win rusher who can generate instant pressure off his first move. That immediacy is the appeal. Think 2.2 seconds instead of 2.4 to 2.6. Those fractions change outcomes. Aidan Hutchinson creates steady pressure and finish, but often works through a longer path. Moore can complement that with earlier disruption. Expect Moore to alternate with DJ Wonnum, a power-based end who is not a pure speed threat. The rotation should be cleaner. The Senior Bowl tape matters here too. Moore beat third-rounder Markel Bell with shock and quickness, a snapshot of what Detroit wants more of on the edge. How the draft graders stacked the class Aggregate draft grades place the Detroit Lions in the middle of the NFL pack. Rene Buettner's annual compilation slotted Detroit 16th with a 2.89 GPA, a B-plus average. The ledger included two A-minuses from Chad Reuter and Vinnie Iyer, many Bs and B-pluses, and a few C-pluses. The outside read tracks with the show's tone: satisfaction with the top of the class, minor quibbles about ceiling. The host made one more point on process. Immediate grades are noise. Real evaluation lands after rookie deals. He plans to grade the 2022 and 2023 classes when those first contracts are over. For 2024, the takeaway is simple. Detroit emphasized high floors early, added early-pressure potential with Moore, and reinforced the offensive line with Miller to keep the offense on time. That is a coherent bet for this roster. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #blakemiller #derrickmoore #detroitlionsdraftgrades #clemsonfootball #keithabney #skylergill-howard #isaacteslaa #taifelton Learn more about your ad choices. Day two of the 2026 NFL Draft is in the books, and the Green Bay Packers did exactly what they needed to do — fill the two biggest holes on the roster without overthinking it. Ryan breaks down both picks in detail and makes the case that Pack Nation should be sitting somewhere between content and flat-out ecstatic. Brandon Cissé, CB, South Carolina — 20 years old, 41-inch vertical, 4.44 speed, elite run support from the perimeter, and a chip on his shoulder that traces back to being passed over in high school. Ryan walks through his PFF profile, his press-man skillset, the "neck down" scouting concern, and why his passion on draft night is rocket fuel for a culture Jonathan Gannon is building. Chris McClellan, DT, Missouri — No freakish RAS, no hype train — just a four-year arc of steady improvement, six sacks leading all SEC defensive tackles in 2025, Senior Bowl standout, and the kind of high-motor, scheme-versatile interior piece that quietly makes defenses better. Ryan compares him to Mike Pinnell and breaks down why this is the "just find a player" pick Packer fans have been begging for. Day Three Preview — Ryan teases what positions are now truly "best available" and why virtually any pick tomorrow works given the needs already addressed. Don't miss Day Three — starts at noon. The Dynasty Nerds Show is back with Episode 3 of the 2026 wide receiver tape breakdown. Rich Dotson, Matt O'Hara, and Garret Price work through six more receivers, and this group brings a mix of high-end talent, intriguing sleepers, and a couple of names the crew is ready to move past entirely. Makai Lemon opens the show and earns some of the highest praise of the entire series. Garret scores him at 77.8 and Matt at 79.0, putting him right alongside Carnell Tate as the clear top two receivers in the class. The crew calls him a dog in every sense of the word, a Puka Nacua comp who plays with relentless toughness, attacks the catch point, blocks downfield, and refuses to lose. His only concern coming out of the combine was some chatter around his interviews and attitude, but nothing in the tape supported that. The crew sees him as a PPR machine with WR1 upside depending on landing spot. Elijah Sarratt is the toughest evaluation of the episode. He was technically sound at Indiana with 15 touchdowns, but the crew noticed he looked a half step slow at the combine compared to everyone else running identical routes. His tape showed very limited separation, a heavy reliance on back shoulder throws with Fernando Mendoza, and a contested catch conversion rate that raised flags. The crew has him in the WR14 range and needs to see athleticism numbers before feeling comfortable. Antonio Williams draws a Jayden Reed comp and slots into that same mid-tier cluster as a gadget chess piece who lives in the slot, turns every catch into a punt return situation, and adds value with no wasted motion in his routes. The injury history is the one real concern. Ted Hurst out of Georgia State is the breakout name of the episode. Six foot four, a 4.42 at the combine, and a Josh Gordon comp from Matt that the whole crew got behind. His ball tracking grade was his highest mark, his speed glides effortlessly on tape, and his Senior Bowl week was one of the best of any receiver in this class. The crew projects him as a day two pick with a true X receiver ceiling. Kevin Coleman and Jordan Hudson close the show and both land off most boards. Coleman disappears against top competition and Hudson offers a little more with the ball in his hands but neither generates dynasty interest from the crew. The Dynasty Nerds Show is back with Episode 2 of the 2026 wide receiver tape breakdown. Rich Dotson, Matt O'Hara, and Garret Price work through six receivers from their personal tape grades, and the early takeaway is that this class is notably cleaner than the running back group. There are no players the crew wants completely off their boards, which makes the tier separation between them all the more important heading into draft season. Carnell Tate opens the show and earns unanimous WR1 status. Garret's tape score of 79.18 puts him in the same all-time company as Ja'Marr Chase, CeeDee Lamb, and Malik Nabers. His 86% contested catch rate ranked third in the entire country, he had zero drops on the season, and the passer rating when targeting him was 151.8, best nationally. The crew calls him the safest player in the 2026 draft class and a multi-contract dynasty asset who wins in every area of the field. Germie Barnard draws a Robert Woods comp from the crew: reliable, smart, and landing-spot dependent for his fantasy ceiling. Malachi Fields is the most debated name on the show. His ball skills, catch radius, and physicality grade at an elite level, but only 36 catches at Notre Dame left too many questions about route tree and burst. Garret has him with a first-round grade. Zachariah Branch is viewed as a special teams ace and gadget piece with limited dynasty value, while Eric Rivers falls even further for the group due to poor hands and unrefined routes despite running a 4.35. The episode closes with a strong endorsement of small-school sleeper Tyren Montgomery, a former walk-on basketball player at LSU turned polished route runner out of John Carroll who turned heads at the Senior Bowl. The crew plans to draft him in rounds 4 to 5 as a high-upside stash with real development upside. Draft Week Recon and a New Name Up Front The Detroit Lions Podcast checks in from Pittsburgh, where the NFL Draft setup is coming together four weeks out. The walk-through comes with roster news that hits the trenches. Detroit added guard Ben Barch to an already crowded interior offensive line. He is a big body with real NFL snaps. He also carries real medical flags. Barch climbed from a D-III program to Jacksonville and showed promise after a strong Senior Bowl in 2020. A dislocated knee derailed that progress. That is a bone issue, not a tendon tear. He later landed with the San Francisco 49ers and opened last season tracking as their starting left guard. An ankle injury in Week 2 sent him to injured reserve. He lost the job to Spencer Buford. The tape before the injuries said NFL starter. The health record says proceed with care. Sorting the Interior: Starters, Jobs, and Budget Reality The Lions have numbers on the interior now. That affects draft plans and daily reps. Tate Rallidge is set to start at right guard. Cade Mays is set to start at center. He is the only free agent on a deal longer than one year, and that signals trust. Left guard is open. Christian Mahogany is in that mix. So is Barch. Josse Scruggs joins the competition after arriving in the David Montgomery trade. Mills Frasier is another name to watch. There are four players fighting for two game-day jobs behind the starters: the backup center Colon and the swing guard role. May the best man win. Cap space matters here. Detroit has room, but not enough to burn minimum deals on sign-and-cut churn. Adding Barch only works if he pushes the room. If he is healthy, he has shown he can. Awosika Moves On; Mahogany's Challenge Coyote Awosika signed with the Los Angeles Chargers after four years in Detroit. He was a dependable reserve and even started in a big spot in San Francisco. He topped out as a primary backup. A fresh look makes sense for both sides. The staff wants upside in those depth chairs. Scruggs may be the best pure talent of the challengers because he can also play center. That flexibility is gold on game days. Mahogany controls his own case at left guard. He was very good early last year. In the opening loss to Green Bay, he was arguably Detroit's best lineman. Later, lateral resets in pass protection failed him. Clean that up, and he can lock the job. If not, Barch and Scruggs will press him every rep. Prospect Debates Will Rage, and That's Fine The show also nods to recent prospect debates. Disagreement is part of the process. Watch the film. Make the case. NFL teams see players differently too. Detroit's interior battle will showcase that truth all summer. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #benbarch #leftguardbattle #christianmahogany #jossescruggs #taterallidge #cademays #backupcentercolon #swingguardrole #capspace #coyoteawosika Learn more about your ad choices. The Case for a Detroit Do-Not-Draft List Jeff Risdon sets a different agenda on the Detroit Lions Podcast. Not the usual mock. Not a wish list. A do-not-draft list. The focus is fit, risk, and timing for the Detroit Lions in the NFL Draft. He wants to plant flags now on prospects who match Detroit's general profile yet still should be avoided at certain prices. His lens is simple. What have we learned from recent cycles about traits, health, and roster priorities. Where does a strong prospect still become a poor bet for Detroit's current build. Drawing Lines From Past Drafts Risdon rewinds to the tight end class that produced LaPorta. He recalls being on the field with Russell Brown and Chris at the Senior Bowl and watching Luke Musgrave struggle. Couldn't beat a jam. Didn't win contested balls. Red zone reps went nowhere. He was fine as a prospect. He just was not the right Lions pick. Detroit chose differently, and he was glad they did. Last spring brought another caution. Landon Jackson, the defensive end from Arkansas, looked the part but lacked twitch. The concern was real enough that he hoped Detroit would pass. Again, a solid player. Just not the best choice for what the Lions needed then. Why Jermott McCoy Gives Detroit Pause The headline name is cornerback Jermott McCoy from Tennessee. He sits at No. 20 on the Detroit Lions Podcast consensus big board that Chris updates daily. The tape from 2024 at Tennessee is outstanding. First round caliber traits show up. Speed. Instincts. Power. Route adjustment. That is not the problem. The issues are availability and experience. McCoy missed the 2025 season after a January 2025 injury. He was allegedly cleared but chose not to return. He did not work out at the combine because he still was not right. A pro day looms on March 31, but there is worry he might not go there either. He has 17 college starts across two programs. That combination of recent injury and limited mileage is a pass for Detroit at premium cost. Roster context matters. Detroit likely has its top five cornerbacks on the roster already. The room feels competitive and deep enough that a first round corner is not a need. If they add, it should be someone they trust to play right away without medical questions. Risdon admits he is more cautious on injuries than many. That tension sits against a front office that has embraced risk before. Wide Receiver Risk: Jordan Tyson Jordan Tyson from Arizona State is a different kind of red flag. On skill, he might be the best wide receiver in this class. The problem is a lengthy injury history and a style that refuses self-preservation. He is still not working out post-injury. Detroit is loaded at wide receiver. That likely keeps the position off the board until the middle of Day 3, if not later. Talent is real. The fit and timing are not. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #nfldraft #jermodmccoy #akheemmesidor #kylelouis #calebbanks #ltoverton Learn more about your ad choices.
