This episode comes with a content warning. This conversation with Chanel Contos contains descriptions of sexual violence, assault and we talk about sexual acts. Parts of this conversation may be distressing for some listeners. The statistics Chanel shares are confronting which is why she has made it her mission to drive a conversation and impact policy change in this country about consent education. We can't talk about consent without talking about what consent is not. I'm really proud of this conversation and believe it's important to sit in the uncomfortable and the hard. But please be aware that discretion is advised before you choose to listen. And if this episode brings up anything for you please reach out to organisations like LifeLife on 13 11 14 Chanel Contos founded Teach Us Consent, a campaign that mandated consent education in Australia. In order to achieve this, she worked closely with politicians from across the political spectrum, including prime ministers. Chanel was the recipient of the Australian Human Rights Commission Young People's Medal in 2021, and in 2023 she was named NSW Young Woman of the Year for her persistent efforts towards eradicating rape culture. Chanel has also been presented with the prestigious Diana Award for her humanitarian work, and in 2022 she was listed as one of the BBC's 100 inspiring and influential women worldwide. Chanel has a Masters in Education, Gender and International Development from University College London and was recently appointed by Julia Gillard to chair the Global Institute for Women's Leadership's. She shares her message in her latest book ‘Consent Laid Bare' - riding the gap between policy makers and the experiences of young people. Calling for greater awareness, education and at its core - empathy - in sharing what is healthy intimacy. Consent is complex - particularly in a society where messages are mixed at best, toxic at worst. Chanel's book is a battle cry from a generation no longer prepared to stay silent. She is a powerhouse on a mission. This is an important conversation for those who care about youth and the generations to come. Hi #smartcommunity friends! In this episode of the Smart Community Podcast I have a really great conversation with Hannah Beder. Hannah is a technology lead, educator, and NSW Young Woman of the Year 2020. Hannah spends her time developing technology curriculums and education products which promote entrepreneurship, encourage creative expression through technology, and prepare young people for the future of work. In this episode Hannah starts by telling us about her background in software engineering, her current work as a technology educator, and her passion for women in tech. Hannah then shares with us how she came to be a software engineer and we discuss the importance of changing the narrative around STEM conversations, so young people feel more confident to pursue STEM careers. Hannah then shares a bit about some of the projects she has been working on, before she discusses some of the factors she sees deterring women from STEM careers, and we talk about the importance of creative flexibility in Smart Communities. We finish our chat discussing the emerging trends of how people are starting to discover what really matters to them and how they impact the world through their work. As always, we hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we enjoyed making it!Find the full show notes at: www.mysmart.communityConnect with Hannah via LinkedIn Connect with me via email: hello@mysmart.communityConnect with My Smart Community via LinkedIn or Twitter and watch on YouTubeThe Smart Community Podcast is produced by Perk Digital

In light of recent tragic events surrounding young people overdosing on drugs, I've dedicated this episode to raising awareness of what you're really risking every time you take a pill. I've invited paramedicine student and St John's Ambulance volunteer on the show to answer questions I know a lot of us have around taking drugs. Is it really that dangerous? Or is it worth the risk of trying to ''fit in''? We dive into discussing the following questions - 1. Is ecstasy & MDMA the same thing? 2. What's the appeal of it? 3. What are the actual side effects? 4. Can you drown yourself by drinking too much water on drugs? 5. What's the signs to look out for signs of overdose? 6. What's the first thing you should do if you notice these signs? 7. Does getting help straight away make much of a difference? 8. Will I get in trouble from paramedics for taking drugs? 9. What's the best thing to remember the next time someone offers you some? In my eyes, there's only one thing to remember - no. It only takes one time. When we hear about scientific breakthroughs we often don’t get the chance to hear what happens behind the scenes and the sheer volume of work that is required to achieve a breakthrough. This episode’s guest Dr Dharmica Mistry is co-founder and Chief Scientist at BCAL Diagnostics, a small Australian biotechnology company developing a revolutionary blood test for the detection of breast cancer. Dharmica was awarded a PhD from Macquarie University for her work on the detection and characterization of novel biomarkers in blood and hair that could be used as the basis for a blood test for breast cancer. In 2016 Dharmica was the recipient of the “NSW Young Woman of the Year” award. She was also announced as Young Executive of the Year (2016) in Australia by the Australian Financial Review (AFR) Boss Magazine. In this conversation we unpack the role of female scientists and the personal determination required to work in the world of uncertainty and innovation. Listening to Dharmica talk about her work made me want to don the lab coat - she is passionate about her craft. Equal parts down-to-earth and inspiring sums up what it was like connecting with Dr Dharmica Mistry.
