The recent signing of HB 117 by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis marks a significant development in the quest for transparency and justice concerning Jeffrey Epstein's criminal activities. The legislation, effective from July 1, 2024, permits the release of grand jury documents under specific conditions: if the subject of the inquiry is deceased, the investigation involved sexual activity with minors, the testimony was previously disclosed by court order, and the state attorney is notified (FLGov) (Court TV).Background and ImpactHistorical Context:In 2006, the Palm Beach Police Department investigated Jeffrey Epstein for his abuse of underage girls. Despite evidence and a strong case for multiple felony charges, the State Attorney's office chose to present the case to a grand jury rather than pursuing direct charges. This decision resulted in sealed grand jury testimonies, protecting the details of Epstein's actions and those involved from public scrutiny .Legislative Intent:Governor DeSantis emphasized the necessity of public knowledge regarding Epstein's case, stating that wealth and status should not shield individuals from justice. The release of these documents aims to expose those who participated in or enabled Epstein's criminal activities, addressing the long-standing demands for transparency and accountability.Victim Advocacy:Victims of Epstein's abuse, such as Haley Robson, have voiced their support for the legislation, hoping it will bring closure and justice. Robson, who spoke at the signing ceremony, highlighted the pervasive impact of Epstein's crimes and the lenient punishment he received. The release of these documents is seen as a step towards understanding the full scope of Epstein's network and the systemic failures that allowed his activities to persist.Legislative DetailsKey Provisions of HB 117:Applicability: The legislation applies to cases where the subject of the grand jury inquiry is deceased, the investigation involved sexual activities with minors, and where prior court orders disclosed some of the testimony (FLGov).Public Disclosure: The law allows for the public release of grand jury documents, ensuring that the details and individuals involved in Epstein's case are brought to light.Implementation: Upon the law taking effect, petitions for the release of the documents can be filed. Governor DeSantis assured that the process would be expedited to avoid unnecessary delays (Court TV).In this episode, we recap the release of the grand jury documents and where things might go from here.(commercial at 12:14)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Florida judge calls Epstein the "most infamous pedophile in American history" following transcripts release - CBS Miami (cbsnews.com)

Last April, Jonathan Creswell's trial for the rape and murder of 21-year-old Katie Simpson opened in Derry's Crown Court. But as we heard in yesterday's episode, it only sat for one day. In today's episode, part 2, journalist Tanya Fowles explains how the prosecution's opening statements painted a terrifying picture of what really happened to Katie Simpson at the hands of her sister's long term boyfriend. And we also hear how Creswell, a manipulator and serial abuser, used the women in his life to help cover up his crimes. Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by Suzanne Brennan. Hosted on Acast. In a world where female sexuality has been hijacked by forces such as porn, patriarchy, and male entitlement – how can we make sexual consent a priority for everyone? Whether it's on campus, at the workplace or in their homes, Australians are shocked week after week at the violence visited upon women who are simply living their lives. In 2023, the Universities Accord review found that sexual assault and harassment on university campuses doesn't just affect the wellbeing of students and staff, it can hold survivors back from success. As a result, campus safety has been deemed a top priority for universities, so what steps are those in positions of power taking to ensure the safety of women within university spaces and beyond? Hear author and activist Chanel Contos, UNSW student activist and gendered violence researcher Angela Griffin, First Nations lead of the First National LGBT+ Sistergirls and Brotherboys experiences with sexual violence survey Vanessa Lee-Ah Mat, and Chair of national violence prevention foundation Our Watch, Moo Baulch, as they explore how we can utilise holistic approaches to community care when it comes to gendered violence. UNSW is committed to creating a safe environment for all. To learn more head here. Presented by the UNSW Centre for Ideas and supported by Adelaide Writers' Week, The Wheeler Centre and the Sydney Opera House. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Chanel Contos has led a powerful movement to include consent education in the national curriculum, and was recently appointed by Julia Gillard to chair the Global Institute for Women's Leadership's Youth Advisory Committee. Her debut book, Consent Laid Bare: Sex, Entitlement & the Distortion of Desire, is a battle cry from a generation no longer prepared to stay silent. In it, Contos explores the political, legislative and cultural changes required to combat Australia's culture of misogyny and normalisation of sexual violence, and outlines steps to achieve true gender equality. Consent Laid Bare advocates for intimacy, consent and enjoyment to be centred in all sexual relationships. At this exclusive Melbourne event hosted by Madison Griffiths, Contos discussed the vital role of consent amidst a culture influenced by porn, the patriarchy and male entitlement. The event recorded on Tuesday 5th March 2024 at The Wheeler Centre. It was presented in partnership with the Victorian Women's Trust. The official bookseller was Readings.Featured music is 'Different Days' by Chill Cole. Convicted drug dealer, David Waldron, played a senior role in the Finglas-Cabra crime gang following the deaths of Martin 'Marlo' Hyland in 2006 and Eamon 'The Don' Dunne in 2010. But rather than attracting press attention in the way his associates had, Waldron flew under the radar to build his drugs empire out of the limelight. Last week, his lavish lifestyle was laid bare after he lost his four year High Court battle against the Criminal Assets Bureau. His 25 year run in the drugs trade extends beyond narcotics to feature luxury Celtic Tiger properties bought with the proceeds of crime, a sex shop-owning 'headshop czar' and a funeral business his wife, Charlene, claimed to found called 'Elegant Send-off.' Conor Lally explains who David Waldron is and how he managed to evade authorities for so long.Presented by Sorcha Pollak. Produced by Declan Conlon and Aideen Finnegan. Hosted on Acast. Have you ever been audited before? There is some vulnerability involved with an audit because you have to open up your finances to someone else's scrutiny. There is the potential of punishment or penalties or fines even for just a mistake. Imagine having an audit done on your life... would that be pleasant? Certainly not! There are just some things in your life that you want to remain hidden. In this section from John 3:14-21, Jesus says that people like to stay away from the light because the light reveals what is hidden in the darkness. The light shows us who we are and what we've done. But the light that Jesus brought wasn't just an exposing light, but a healing light. Through his death and resurrection, he has made us to be light. Because we trust this about Jesus and his work, we no longer need to hide anything. We can freely confess it before God and trust that he has forgiven all of our sins. Apostle Fredrick Kaluluma teaches believers about the Spirit, Soul and Body and how they work. The first point of interaction with God is with the spirit, the human spirit is the one programmed to interact directly with God, and he needs spiritual things to survive. The Man of God teaches us that our spirit is wired and designed like God, that's why we are different.

CW: Discussion of sexual assaultIt's been described as the game-changing book about sex and consent that every woman - and man - should read.In 2021, Chanel Contos posted on Instagram asking people to share their stories of sexual assault during their schooling years. This post unexpectedly went viral, and almost 7000 people sent in testimonies describing behaviour that constitutes rape. Virtually none of these instances were reported, and almost all of them were by people they knew. How and why is this happening in an era of growing equality? In her new book, Chanel argues that when it comes to sex, we are still working with an outdated social contract that privileges men's pleasure at the expense of women's humanity. In this important episode if Booksmart, Hannah Diviney sat down with Chanel to discuss her journey and what it was like writing and publishing Consent Laid Bare.

In most of the world, “salvage” is a hopeful word, writes journalist Patricia Evangelista. But in Philippine English, to salvage is also to execute a suspected criminal without trial. The salvages of suspected drug users and dealers encouraged by former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte are the subject of Evangelista's new book “Some People Need Killing,” which draws its title from the words of a vigilante she interviewed. According to human rights organizations, more than 30,000 people were extrajudicially executed in the Philippines for alleged narcotics offenses by the time Duterte left office in 2022. Evangelista interviewed the families of victims, and we talk to her about the impact Duterte's terrifying war on drugs had on them and on the country. Guest: Patricia Evangelista, journalist; author, “Some People Need Killing: A Memoir of Murder in My Country”

We'd like to give a content warning for rape, sexual assault, and harassment. Take care of yourself when listening to this ep and moving through the world. And, if you ever need it, call the Lifeline hotline on 13 11 14. Chanel Contos became a household name in 2021 after beginning an Instagram poll asking for Australian girls and women's stories of sexual assault. After an outpouring of responses, Chanel began Teach Us Consent, a movement that urged the government to include sexual consent education in the curriculum. Since then, Chanel has created huge change in the country and won the Young People's Human Rights Medal. As of this week, Chanel is also an author. Her first book, Consent Laid Bare, explores sex, consent and the education we all should have had. You can buy Consent Laid Bare here (or from all good book retailers) and follow Chanel at @chanelc and @teachusconsent. This episode comes with a content warning. This conversation with Chanel Contos contains descriptions of sexual violence, assault and we talk about sexual acts. Parts of this conversation may be distressing for some listeners. The statistics Chanel shares are confronting which is why she has made it her mission to drive a conversation and impact policy change in this country about consent education. We can't talk about consent without talking about what consent is not. I'm really proud of this conversation and believe it's important to sit in the uncomfortable and the hard. But please be aware that discretion is advised before you choose to listen. And if this episode brings up anything for you please reach out to organisations like LifeLife on 13 11 14 Chanel Contos founded Teach Us Consent, a campaign that mandated consent education in Australia. In order to achieve this, she worked closely with politicians from across the political spectrum, including prime ministers. Chanel was the recipient of the Australian Human Rights Commission Young People's Medal in 2021, and in 2023 she was named NSW Young Woman of the Year for her persistent efforts towards eradicating rape culture. Chanel has also been presented with the prestigious Diana Award for her humanitarian work, and in 2022 she was listed as one of the BBC's 100 inspiring and influential women worldwide. Chanel has a Masters in Education, Gender and International Development from University College London and was recently appointed by Julia Gillard to chair the Global Institute for Women's Leadership's. She shares her message in her latest book ‘Consent Laid Bare' - riding the gap between policy makers and the experiences of young people. Calling for greater awareness, education and at its core - empathy - in sharing what is healthy intimacy. Consent is complex - particularly in a society where messages are mixed at best, toxic at worst. Chanel's book is a battle cry from a generation no longer prepared to stay silent. She is a powerhouse on a mission. This is an important conversation for those who care about youth and the generations to come. Witness to Yesterday (The Champlain Society Podcast on Canadian History)
In this podcast episode, Simon Nantais talks to Mary-Ann Shantz about her book What Nudism Exposes: An Unconventional History of Postwar Canada published by The University of British Columbia Press in 2022. As nudism took root after World War II, its Canadian adherents advanced the idea that going nude and looking at other's bodies satisfied natural curiosity, loosened social taboos, and encouraged mental health. By the 1970s, nudists switched focus to promoting the pleasurable aspects of their practice. Mary-Ann Shantz contends that throughout the postwar decades, nudists sought social approval as they engaged with contemporary concerns about childrearing, pornography, and public nudity. What Nudism Exposes explains the movement's perspectives while questioning its assumptions, arguing that what nudism ultimately exposes is how the body sits at the intersection of nature and culture, the individual and the social, the private and the public. Mary-Ann completed her PhD in History from Carleton University and taught at McEwen University in Edmonton before becoming a researcher and a project coordinator with Covenant Health in Edmonton. She has contributed to the edited volume Contesting Bodies and Nation in Canadian History published by the University of Toronto Press. She has also published in Histoire Sociale/Social History and the Journal of the History of Childhood and Youth. This podcast was produced by Jessica Schmidt.
