The Global Institute of Finance, Technology and Society (GIFTS), recently launched by Nanyang Technological University, aims to deepen research into how AI is reshaping finance, business and society. But there was a line in NTU's launch announcement that's worth discussing: today's AI isn't yet reliable enough for serious economic research. So what does that mean when AI is already shaping decisions about our banking, our insurance and our investments? On Viewpoint, Lynlee Foo speaks to Gary Ang, founder of independent AI advisory practice, Quaintitative and former Lead of AI Supervision at the Monetary Authority of Singapore, about the gap between what AI can do today and what the financial sector actually needs it to do, and the questions every customer should be asking when AI is involved in decisions about their money.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S2E72: What cues India can take from China to fix its foul air and water

India’s poor air is driving much needed investment away from the country. Synopsis: The Straits Times’ senior columnist Ravi Velloor distils 45 years of experience covering the Asian continent, with expert guests. There was a time when China was thought to have the world’s most polluted cities. However, Beijing’s sustained efforts have overturned that situation. Instead, when the question of polluted cities comes up, eyes turn to India now. According to the noted Harvard economist Gita Gopinath, a former top IMF official, poor air quality is driving investment away from India and is causing more damage to its economy than US President Donald Trump’s tariffs. There is enough policy experience, and scientific knowledge, to mitigate the situation. Indeed, India has within itself some of the world’s best scientific brains. The question is whether it has the political will to take the right measures, including pricing essential services such as water appropriately to curb overuse and wastage. In this wide-ranging conversation, host Ravi Velloor speaks with Chandran Nair, the Malaysian-born, founder and CEO of Hongkong-based Global Institute for Tomorrow on how India could take cues from China to fix its foul air and water. Mr Nair, a biochemical engineer who in 1994, set up the first foreign environment consultancy in China. He is also a frequent traveller to China and India. The last few years have been a particularly challenging time for the international law framework outlines at Nuremberg. The trial of the German leadership at the end of the Second World War, coupled with the creation of the UN and the UN Charter, codified a series of legal obligations for state leaders. It outlawed waging war or even threatening war. It held individual leaders as criminally liable for violating the rules of war. And it promised prosecutions as a result of these violations. While it had never realized its promise, the past few years, from the Russian invasion of Ukraine, to terrorist attacks against Israel and Israel's waging of war in Gaza and Lebanon, to the Israeli and American war against Iran, have been a particular challenge to the so-called Nuremberg principles. So on today's show, we explore what these principles are whether international actors can return to their promise. The Israeli/American War against Iran continues. On today's panel we wrestle with the question of the war’s legality. In doing so, we reject US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s assertion that the US will fight this war with “no stupid rules of engagement,,” and his assertion that there will be “no politically correct wars,” and “no nation-building quagmire.” While he dismisses the importance of international laws on war, we do not. Tuesday, March 17, at 8pm ET/5pm PT. https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/o3miFIPmSAC2d46Vh14iBAOne of our favorite guests is back to talk about the central problem facing much of the Global South. It is not simply bad policy or weak leadership, but the persistence of colonial economic structures. He explains that many countries, especially in Africa, remain trapped in roles designed by empire: exporters of cheap raw materials, importers of finished goods, and sites for low-value production. Political independence did not end these structures, and debt, IMF intervention, and external pressure have only deepened the trap."Colonialism and its economic structures were not designed for development, they were not designed for democracy, they were not designed for justice, they were not designed to produce a just transition or human rights or any of these things. If anything, colonialism and its economic structures were hierarchical, abusive, violent, extractive."Fadhel was one of the economists we originally turned to for our education in MMT. In this conversation with Steve he makes the case that MMT is not a theory of everything. Issues of race, class, and colonialism require their own lenses. Whether the issue is climate change, migration, development, or reparations, the entry point has to be the lived material conditions. MMT becomes crucial when the question turns to how to mobilize resources, avoid debt traps, and finance transformation without inflationary collapse.Dr. Fadhel Kaboub is a Tunisian American economist. She famously called it out in a speech against opposition leader Tony Abbott in 2012 and has always been a proponent of equality for women. But 14 years on and research from the organisation she now leads finds that more and more young men want a traditional wife that obeys her husband and that's not too independent*. Conflict continues in the Middle East, but with near total internet blackout in Iran, there's currently very little access to information from within the country. Many women outside of Iran are unable to hear from their own family and friends. To look at the ongoing conflict and how it is impacting women and the Iranian diaspora in the UK in particular, Anita Rani speaks to Faranak Amidi, a BBC Global Women reporter and the presenter of the World Service Languages Fifth Floor programme, Kamin Mohammadi, a writer and journalist born in Iran and based in Britain, and Donya, a 25-year-old British Iranian. A new global survey of 23,000 people across 29 countries has shown an increase in traditional views on gender among younger people. For example, it found that a third of Gen Z men surveyed - those born between 1997 and 2012 - believed husbands should have the final say on decisions, compared to only 13% of Boomer men, born between 1946 and 1964. Anita speaks to Joan Smith, journalist, novelist and human rights activist, and Professor Heejung Chung, Director of the Global Institute for Women's Leadership at King's College, who led the study.Onjali Raúf's award-winning novel The Boy at the Back of the Classroom has been adapted for the stage and is currently on a UK tour until the end of May. She joins Anita to explain what originally led her to write this children's novel tackling immigration and death and what she wants audiences to take away from seeing this production.Big Nobody is the debut novel from Alex Kadis. The main character is teenager Constance Costa whose life is spiralling after the loss of her mother and brothers in a car crash. What should I make for dinner? Canada Beef will say...beef.. of course. But what cut of beef should I chose? How do I prepare it? That's why Canada Beef is working towards getting QR codes on every package of beef. One quick scan with your smart phone and all of those questions will be answered. Canada Beef President Michael Young says when every cut of beef has its own QR code the home cook will have the information they need to make a decision on the type of beef to buy, how to cook it, access to recipes and videos and even a grocery list, at their fingertips. Eventually the QR code will be part of the retail meat case, print or digital flyers. While beef will be the first to do this, Young believes other commodities like chicken and pork will soon follow.AND Better brome....better beef. The Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS) at the University of Saskatchewan will receive $332,000 from the Agriculture Development Fund to find ways to make genetic improvements in bromegrass, an essential forage crop for cattle. GIFS Director of Genomics and Bioinformatics Dr. Andrew Sharpe will explain how the research being done will produce a catalogue of genetic variations for bromegrass. He says it will have a direct impact on the ability of breeders to select the most nutritious varieties of bromegrass that produce the largest yield.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In today's world, anyone serious about anti-imperialism, global development, and monetary sovereignty needs to break through the well-funded US propaganda machine and develop a fact-based, nuanced understanding of China. To this end, Steve asked Yan Liang to come back to the podcast to look at China through the MMT lens, analyzing its economic management, global role, and response to Western villainization. They discuss China's development ethos and describe China as a state that actively uses its monetary and fiscal sovereignty to guide development towards internal goals (poverty alleviation, technological self-reliance, common prosperity) and external partnership (Win-win cooperation, Belt and Road Initiative). Illustrating the difference between state steering and the so-called “free market,” the conversation goes into China's mobilization of real resources through strategic state guidance, like Five-Year Plans and state-owned enterprises in key sectors. Yan talks about the use of capital controls and a managed exchange rate. She details lessons from 2015 and the application of MMT principles to insulate domestic policy from volatile external forces. Without romanticizing China, Yan also walks through its real challenges. But from an MMT-aware lens, these are seen as problems of policy design and resource use (issues a sovereign, planning-oriented state can address!) rather than proof of an impending collapse. Yan Liang is Peter C and Bonnie S Kremer Chair Professor of Economics at Willamette University. She is also a Research Associate at the Levy Economics Institute, a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Global Development Policy Center (Boston University), and a Research Scholar of the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity. Yan specializes in the Modern Monetary Theory (MMT), the Political Economy of China, Economic Development, and International Economics. While stimulating and rewarding, academic careers present numerous challenges that require resilience and determination from those who wish to remain in the academy. The job precarity now so common across higher education, alongside the repeated rejection from funders and publishers and pressure to demonstrate excellence across teaching, research and administration, makes for a brutal combination, too often resulting in stress, overwork and ultimately burnout.  We speak to two professors, who have both written on navigating this tricky career terrain, about how they have managed to find freedom and fulfilment in their work, even when faced with spiralling workloads and multiple pressures, and what fulfilment looks like. You will hear from: Jeffrey McDonnell is a university distinguished professor of hydrology in the School of Environment and Sustainability, and associate director of the Global Institute for Water Security at the University of Saskatchewan, as well as a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. In 2024, he was appointed as an officer to the Order of Canada and his many awards include the 2016 Dooge Medal from the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (with Unesco and the World Meteorological Organization), the 2022 Outstanding Achievement Award from the New Zealand Hydrological Society and the 2009 John Dalton Medal from the European Geosciences Union. He is the author of Navigating an Academic Career: A Brief Guide for PhD Students, Postdocs and New Faculty (American Geophysical Union, 2020). Sarah Robinson is a professor of human resource management at IÉSEG School of Management in Paris. She moved into academia after working in international development and completed her PhD at the University of Lancaster before working her way up through a series of lectureships at the Open University, Leicester University and the University of Glasgow, where she was promoted to professor in 2019. After years studying the experiences of early career researchers, Sarah co-edited Doing Academic Careers Differently: Portraits of Academic Life (Routledge, 2023) with fellow researchers Alexander Bristow and Olivier Ratle, a book that seeks to highlight approaches to academia that diverge from the traditional career model. Suchitra Vijayan speaks with Sabhanaz Rashid Diya, Sams Wahid Shahat, Mohammad Arafat and Apon Das of the Tech Global Institute. They unpack the aftermath of Bangladesh's July 2024 uprising, which ended the Awami League's 16-year rule but left behind a trail of unacknowledged deaths, disappearances, and state-sponsored impunity. Drawing on the landmark report Bloodshed in Bangladesh, the conversation reveals how digital forensics, open-source investigation, and survivor testimony challenge the state's attempts at erasure. The discussion traces how the team worked under conditions of internet shutdowns and media blackouts to archive atrocity evidence in real time. They explain how metadata, satellite imagery, and video analysis reconstructed the final hours of massacres such as the killing of 20-year-old Mohammad Ridoi, whose disappearance still haunts his family. Archiving is a political act that confronts Bangladesh's machinery of impunity and keeps memory alive against official narratives. They also explore the disinformation ecosystem that accompanied the killings: pro-government propaganda campaigns on Facebook, deliberate framing of student protesters as violent extremists, and a systematic effort to discredit the uprising. Against this, informal networks of communities mobilised to counter state lies. Key Takeaways - Digital forensics as resistance: Satellite imagery, metadata, and video archives countered state denial and reconstructed events minute by minute. - Archiving as a political act: Preserving testimonies and evidence challenges the state's monopoly over history and builds collective memory. - Disinformation as state strategy: Paid social media campaigns framed protesters as extremists. - Justice and accountability: Beyond trials, justice means refusing erasure, ensuring victims' sacrifices become part of Bangladesh's democratic legacy. Sabhanaz Rashid Diya is the executive director of Tech Global Institute. She's a computational social scientist with over 16 years of experience in technology, public policy, and ethics. Sams Wahid Shahat is a dedicated researcher in the fields of media and information management and fact-checking. Shekh Mohammad Arafat has been a fact-checker since 2022. Throughout this period, he has developed interests in media and information literacy, fact-checking training, and disinformation research Apon Das is an experienced media and information researcher and fact-checker. What if the key to cybersecurity isn't more tech—but more humanity? In this On Location episode of ITSPmagazine, Rob Black—UK Cyber Citizen of the Year and founder of the Global Institute of Cyber Deception—joins hosts Marco Ciappelli and Sean Martin to challenge conventional thinking around cyber defense. With a background spanning military operations and human sciences, Rob brings a fresh perspective that prioritizes multidisciplinary thinking, behavioral insight, and creative disruption over brute-force technology.Rob highlights the importance of soft skills and critical thinking through initiatives like the UK Cyber Leaders Challenge, where students take on crisis simulation roles to sharpen leadership and communication in real-world scenarios. These experiences underscore the need to cultivate professionals who can think dynamically, not just code efficiently.A key focus of the conversation is the strategic use of deception in cybersecurity. Rob points out that while organizations obsess over vulnerabilities and zero-days, they often overlook attacker intent. Instead of just locking down infrastructure, defenders should disrupt decision-making—using tools, tactics, and even perception itself to sow doubt and hesitation. From publicizing the use of deception technologies to crafting networks that appear already compromised by rival threat actors, Rob argues for a smarter, more psychological approach to defense. He also pushes back against the industry's obsession with tools for every symptom—drawing a parallel to big pharma's model of selling treatments without tackling root causes. If cybersecurity is to become more resilient, he argues, it needs to embrace a systems mindset that includes governance, behavioral science, and even cultural analysis. This episode is a must-listen for anyone tired of buzzwords and ready to rethink cybersecurity as a socio-technical system—not just a digital one. From geopolitics to psychology, deception to diplomacy, Rob Black connects the dots between how we live with technology and how we must protect it—not just through code, but through creativity, context, and compassion. “When you are a dominant empire like the US, economically, militarily, geopolitically, and you make bets that are exclusively based on power rather than technology, innovation, research and development, education, a growing prosperous middle class, history tells us that you will eventually fail. And that's the ugly reality.” Like most media nowadays, we seek to make sense of the confusing, contradictory, and often absurd Trump policies. So of course we turn to our best friend and most frequent guest, economist Fadhel Kaboub.Fadhel suggests that Trump has two missions: reinforcing the US imperialist-dominant position that is currently under threat, and reinforcing his legacy, the MAGA movement, and the supremacy of the Republican Party for years to come. Ironically there are even two Elon Musks in the White House: “There's Elon Musk, Twitter, and there's Elon Musk, Tesla, and the other tech stuff. The interest that the Trump administration is going to serve is not Tesla. It's going to be the Facebooks, the cloud technologists ... the techno-feudalists who run the world today. “The importance of the techno-feudalists is that they don't actually manufacture things, they don't produce things. They control the cloud, they control the mind, they control your feelings, your choices... not just consumer choices, but political social worldviews are controlled and manipulated by social media and by the big data centers that collect and analyze and feed you choices and filter the news and filter information for you.” In their discussion, Fadhel points out the absurdity of thinking tariffs will “bring back jobs” to the US. He also explains that companies like Apple aren't manufacturing in China for cheap labor, but because China has the high-skilled workers. Instead of investing in education in the US, Trump boasts of making cuts.Fadhel explains that Trump's negotiation strategy relies on creating chaos and confusion. In comparison, China's path is starkly different, including creation of the digital yuan as an international payment system to bypass SWIFT and the dollar.Fadhel and Steve remind us that both US political parties are guilty of perpetuating the false narrative of fiscal constraints. As always, listeners are challenged to question the prevailing mainstream rhetoric and look for the deeper motivations behind it.Fadhel Kaboub is an associate professor of economics at Denison University (presently on leave) and the president of the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity. "Colonized people have the right to resist." Economist and friend of the podcast Fadhel Kaboub talks with Steve about the effects of global hegemony and the ongoing attempts to shift the balance of power. They look at BRICS, though it's perhaps too soon to predict its ultimate outcome and influence. Fadhel argues that a true multipolar world cannot emerge without placing the Global South at the center of economic decision-making, challenging the existing economic domination by the US and other nations. The history of colonial exploitation continues to affect the resource-rich region.Fadhel also addresses the ways in which Israel is carrying out the US agenda in Gaza. He points out that the world's reaction is being influenced by the ready availability of direct information via social media. "The world didn't start on October 7th. There was a world before that. And there is a colonial project that was being built in Gaza and Palestine. "Every colonial case we've seen in Africa and the rest of the Global South created resistance movements and resistance. Some people resist in the streets, some people resist with little pebbles and stones, some people resist with weapons. Some people resist with their voice, some people resist with their pen. But it's resistance. And it's a legitimate right to resist. "It's beginning to click for a lot of people that colonized people have the right to resist."
