“When you are a dominant empire like the US, economically, militarily, geopolitically, and you make bets that are exclusively based on power rather than technology, innovation, research and development, education, a growing prosperous middle class, history tells us that you will eventually fail. And that's the ugly reality.” Like most media nowadays, we seek to make sense of the confusing, contradictory, and often absurd Trump policies. So of course we turn to our best friend and most frequent guest, economist Fadhel Kaboub.Fadhel suggests that Trump has two missions: reinforcing the US imperialist-dominant position that is currently under threat, and reinforcing his legacy, the MAGA movement, and the supremacy of the Republican Party for years to come. Ironically there are even two Elon Musks in the White House: “There's Elon Musk, Twitter, and there's Elon Musk, Tesla, and the other tech stuff. The interest that the Trump administration is going to serve is not Tesla. It's going to be the Facebooks, the cloud technologists ... the techno-feudalists who run the world today. “The importance of the techno-feudalists is that they don't actually manufacture things, they don't produce things. They control the cloud, they control the mind, they control your feelings, your choices... not just consumer choices, but political social worldviews are controlled and manipulated by social media and by the big data centers that collect and analyze and feed you choices and filter the news and filter information for you.” In their discussion, Fadhel points out the absurdity of thinking tariffs will “bring back jobs” to the US. He also explains that companies like Apple aren't manufacturing in China for cheap labor, but because China has the high-skilled workers. Instead of investing in education in the US, Trump boasts of making cuts.Fadhel explains that Trump's negotiation strategy relies on creating chaos and confusion. In comparison, China's path is starkly different, including creation of the digital yuan as an international payment system to bypass SWIFT and the dollar.Fadhel and Steve remind us that both US political parties are guilty of perpetuating the false narrative of fiscal constraints. As always, listeners are challenged to question the prevailing mainstream rhetoric and look for the deeper motivations behind it.Fadhel Kaboub is an associate professor of economics at Denison University (presently on leave) and the president of the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity. He's the author of Global South Perspectives on Substack. Find his work at globalsouthperspectives.substack.com @FadhelKaboub on Twitter

As you will have heard on many previous episodes of the podcast, with Marie Battiste, Carl Mika, Wakanyi Hoffman, Vanessa Andreotti and others, understanding the ways in which our colonial schooling systems have propogated one particular way of knowing our world, and excluded and often violently suppressed many others is something that I care deeply about. For me, it has to be a key part of any transformative work that we do to, with humility and curiosity, to reorient education systems. But in order to do this, we need people who are able to gather and convene the critical conversations that put these ways of knowing in dialogue with each other. It is therefore the greatest honour to have Professor Catherine Odora Hoppers joining me on the podcast this week. For her entire career Dr Hoppers has been at the forefront of facilitating these vital conversations. In post-Apartheid South Africa, she designed and enabled the process that led to the first national policy on the recognition, development and protection of indigenous knowledge systems. Professor Catherine Odora Hoppers is a scholar and policy specialist on International Development, education, North-South questions, disarmament, peace, and human security. She is a UNESCO expert in basic education, lifelong learning, information systems and on Science and Society; an expert in disarmament at the UN Department of Disarmament Affairs; an expert to the World Economic Forum on benefit sharing and value addition protocols; and the World Intellectual Property Organisation on traditional knowledge and community intellectual property rights. She got a Masters and PhD in International Education from Stockholm University, Sweden. In South Africa, Professor Hoppers was awarded Professor Extraordinarius in 2019 at University of South Africa (Pretoria). She held a South African Research Chair in Development Education at the University of South Africa (2008-2018). Prior to that, she was a technical adviser on Indigenous Knowledge Systems to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Arts, Culture, Science and Technology (South Africa) and led the Task Team to draft the national policy on Indigenous Knowledge Systems. She is a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf, 2002), and was a member of the Academy of Science Special Panel on the Future of Humanities (South Africa). She was the Goodwill Ambassador for Makerere University in Kampala Uganda; and Ambassador for Non-Violence at the Durban Universities' International Centre for Non-Violence. In July 2015, she received the Nelson Mandela Distinguished Africanist Award from HE Thabo Mbeki for her pursuit of the total liberation for the African continent through the promotion of Indigenous Knowledge Systems of Education and in the same year, Prof Hoppers was awarded “Woman of the Year” by the University of South Africa, and was named as a “Leading Educationist” and was honoured in the Gallery of Leadership as the 63 most influential people who have shaped Unisa since its inception in 1873, in a permanent exhibition in Kgorong Building in UNISA. In 2017, Professor Hoppers received the distinction from UNESCO as an Honorary Fellow in Lifelong learning. She is the Founder and Director, Global Institute for Applied Governance in Science, Knowledge Systems and Innovations (https://www.giagsi-ug.org/the-faculty/). Is there any evidence that having a female leader actually changes a country? Do women make better politicians - or is it all based on stereotypes?Women make up less than 7% of world leaders, and last year in 2024 the number of women in parliament globally fell. However, Mexico, Namibia and North Macedonia all elected their first female presidents, and as more women get elected to the top jobs, there's an ongoing debate about whether female leaders do things differently to men.Laura Garcia from BBC Mundo breaks down some common misconceptions about women in power with a game of true or false. We also hear from Professor Rosie Campbell from the Global Institute for Women's Leadership at King's College London, about why it's so hard to draw conclusions about the effects of female lawmakers. Associate Professor Jamie Hartmann-Boyce and Associate Professor Nicola Lindson discuss the new evidence in e-cigarette research and interview Dr Marathi Vojjala from the Global Institute of Public Health, New York University, USA. In the November podcast Marathi Vojjala discusses her pilot randomised controlled trial (RCT) that aims to investigate the effects of switching to electronic cigarettes from combustible cigarettes and the potential acceptability of e-cigarettes or as a harm reduction strategy among individuals with chronic diseases who smoke. This study examines examining the potential of behavioural counselling paired with e-cigarettes versus nicotine replacement therapy (e.g. nicotine patches or gum) for achieving harm reduction and decreased combustible cigarette use. The findings from this pilot RCT hold significant implications for chronic conditions such as COPD, asthma, CAD, and peripheral arterial disease who smoke combustible cigarettes. The observed reduction in CPD and improvement in respiratory symptoms suggest that switching to e-cigarettes appears feasible and acceptable among those with chronic diseases. These results suggest that e-cigarettes may offer an alternative for individuals struggling to quit combustible cigarette smoking through existing pharmacotherapies. This study supports further exploration of switching to e-cigarettes as a harm reduction strategy among combustible cigarette users who have been unsuccessful at quitting by other means. According to the former and future US President, Canada's water is like a 'very large faucet' that one could turn on, say, to help California in a drought, or any other Pacific Northwest state that might need it. According to scientists, it's ... not like that at all. But still, Canada has water. And increasingly, the United States needs it.Does Trump actually intend to ask for, buy or even take Canadian water? Would it even be possible if he wanted to? What do Canadians need to know about their abundant natural resource as the climate crisis makes it scarcer around the world? How worried should we be about Canadian water?GUEST: Dr. Jay Famiglietti, hydrologist and Global Futures Professor at Arizona State University; former Executive Director Emeritus of the Global Institute for Water Security at the University of Saskatchewan We love feedback at The Big Story, as well as suggestions for future episodes. "Colonized people have the right to resist." Economist and friend of the podcast Fadhel Kaboub talks with Steve about the effects of global hegemony and the ongoing attempts to shift the balance of power. They look at BRICS, though it's perhaps too soon to predict its ultimate outcome and influence. Fadhel argues that a true multipolar world cannot emerge without placing the Global South at the center of economic decision-making, challenging the existing economic domination by the US and other nations. The history of colonial exploitation continues to affect the resource-rich region.Fadhel also addresses the ways in which Israel is carrying out the US agenda in Gaza. He points out that the world's reaction is being influenced by the ready availability of direct information via social media. "The world didn't start on October 7th. There was a world before that. And there is a colonial project that was being built in Gaza and Palestine. "Every colonial case we've seen in Africa and the rest of the Global South created resistance movements and resistance. Some people resist in the streets, some people resist with little pebbles and stones, some people resist with weapons. Some people resist with their voice, some people resist with their pen. But it's resistance. And it's a legitimate right to resist. "It's beginning to click for a lot of people that colonized people have the right to resist." Fadhel Kaboub is an associate professor of economics at Denison University (presently on leave) and the president of the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity. Parenting is filled with moments of stress and overwhelm, especially when raising children with different neurological wiring. Many of us have faced times when our child's behavior feels too much to handle, leaving us unsure of what to do next. That's where today's guest, Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge, comes in. Dr. Roseann is a trailblazer in mental health, media figure, and the founder of Neurotastic™ Brain Formulas and The Global Institute of Children's Mental Health. She is on a mission to “Change the way we view and treat children's mental health and is known for her teachings on promoting brain calmness using science-driven solutions. She is also the host of the It's Gonna Be OK podcast, a go-to resource for parents navigating their children's mental health challenges. In our conversation today, she introduces us to the concept of low-demand parenting, a style that has emerged alongside the increasing recognition of neurodivergent youth. Throughout the episode, Dr. Roseann explains how this approach can help parents reduce their own stress by lowering demands on both themselves and their children. This, in turn, allows kids with dysregulated nervous systems to feel more secure and capable of learning critical skills like flexibility and problem-solving. We'll discuss how low-demand parenting can reduce anxiety in children, how to implement co-regulation techniques, and the benefits of self-regulation in creating a happier, healthier home environment. Show Notes: [2:47] - Neurodivergence and brains that are wired differently are on the rise. [3:27] - Low-demand parenting is a style of parenting that has come with the rise of kids who are uniquely wired. It's a misunderstood style of parenting. [5:11] - When kids have dysregulated nervous systems, no matter where it's coming from, they're going to fall back on familiar behaviors. [6:47] - We need to teach kids flexibility, coping skills, and problem solving. That is a lot harder when you're coming in hot. [8:15] - This style of parenting can be started at any time. But you may get some pushback. [9:34] - One of the benefits of low demand parenting is reducing anxiety. [10:53] - We don't really think about our kids having activations in their nervous systems. [12:23] - This type of parenting is really helpful particularly in current times and with current generations, but specifically with neurodivergent youth. [13:35] - Self-regulation is key to leading a happy life. [14:54] - We learn our parenting from our own parents and the strategies are not always helpful. [16:32] - When you're overwhelmed, everything feels like a mountain. The one action you can start with is co-regulation. [18:51] - Dr. Roseann gives some starting points in learning co-regulation. [21:19] - The hardest part is reinforcement. It's not going to stick with just one time. [23:13] - A common misconception is that children are trying to overwhelm us on purpose. We can guide them to healthy ways to manage discomfort. [24:39] - The most common reason people leave college is due to their mental health. [26:58] - Give the other parent or caretaker the information as well. [28:42] - The more you are regulated, the more regulated your child will be. Dysregulation can negatively impact the parent-child relationship. [30:50] - Being regulated doesn't mean you don't feel stress. It means that you are activated by it. About Our Guest: Dr. Roseann stands as a mental health pioneer, media persona, and the architect of The Global Institute of Children's Mental Health, Neurotastic™ Brain Formulas and Dr. Roseann, LLC.
