Reflect on the enduring truth of God’s goodness, even amid life’s hardships. Using Psalm 27 as an anchor, this devotional reminds us that our outward circumstances do not determine the inward state of our hearts. By recalling God’s faithfulness, seeking intimacy with Him, and remembering His past provision, we can remain confident in His goodness today, shifting perspective from what seems lacking to what God has already provided. Highlights Anchor Scripture: Psalm 27 provides comfort and reassurance amid trials. Confidence in God: Trusting God’s goodness despite external challenges renews hope. God’s Presence: He never leaves or forsakes His children (Deut. 31:6, Isa. 41:10). Active Remembrance: Reflecting on personal experiences of God’s care strengthens faith. Encouragement through Music: Songs like The Goodness of God by Bethel Music can reinforce God’s faithfulness. Intersecting Faith & Life Life inevitably brings struggle and hardship, but God’s presence never wavers. We can cultivate hope and courage by returning to anchor scriptures, recalling God’s past faithfulness, and focusing on His goodness rather than current difficulties. Intentionally meditating on His promises and using tools like Scripture or worship music can encourage a steadfast heart even during storms. This episode is sponsored by Trinity Debt Management. Conner Bible Reading:“I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.” - Psalm 27:13 (NIV) Do you have an anchor scripture or favorite passage of the Bible that you regularly return to for comfort or encouragement? I have a few, but one of my favorites is Psalm 27. I have read and reread this psalm more times than I can count. I even handwrote the full psalm in my journal because I am a writer and writers best retain information through the physical act of writing (or typing) and reading. Regardless of how I have interacted with the text, I just can’t seem to get away from this particular passage. It’s like I somehow knew these words would need to be forever etched into my heart. Psalm 27 was written by David during one of his many flights from those who sought to take his life. Though it looked as if the deck was completely stacked against him, David determined to put his faith in the Lord for refuge and rescue. Many of the declarations he makes in this narrative are bold refutes against the temptation to despair. In verse three, he states, “though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident.” He continues on in verse eight to say, “My heart says of you, ‘Seek his face!’ Your face, LORD, I will seek.” Ultimately, what David desired most was intimacy and companionship with the Lord, for that really is the only place where we can obtain true and lasting comfort. David understood that his outward circumstances did not have to dictate the inward position of his heart. The goodness of God remained even if it looked like everything around him was falling apart. No matter your age, occupation, or geographic location, like David, life has likely thrown you some hard knocks. Unfortunately, disappointments and hardships are guaranteed in this fallen world. No one is immune. In fact, the Bible actually promises that we will encounter struggle. Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33, NIV). The good news is that we are not alone in our trials. The Bible affirms that God is present and helping us through our circumstances. Our Heavenly Father promises He will never leave or forsake us (Deut. 31:6), He is close to those who call upon Him (Psalm 145:18), He will draw near to us when we draw near to Him (James 4:8), and He will help us and uphold us with his righteous right hand (Isa. 41:10). You can be confident that God has not left you alone in the difficulties or challenges you are facing. Sometimes, our souls just need to be reminded of God's unmovable, unfailing love. In Psalm 27, David refuted the lie of defeat by declaring who God is, all He had already done, and the Biblical promises He has made to those who love Him. Reciting these truths and recalling times when you have personally witnessed God’s care and provision in your life helps shift your perspective from what seems to be lacking to what has been provided. In light of this fresh perspective, hope can be renewed. And it is here, in this place of confident assurance in Him, that you can look out beyond the momentary affliction you are facing and say: No matter what is going on… “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.” - Psalm 27:13 (NIV) Intersecting Faith & Life: Do you have an anchor scripture you turn to again and again in times of trouble? If so, when was the last time you recited it? One of the best ways to stir up our souls is through song. Ultimately, the psalms penned by David were meant to be sung. Music has such an incredible ability to soothe and encourage our blistered or discouraged hearts. One song that ministers to me when I need to be reminded of the abundance in my life rather than the lack is The Goodness of God by Bethel Music and Jenn Johnson. Take some time to look up the lyrics or listen to this song today. May it remind you of God’s love, faithfulness, and goodness present in your life.

From Eden to the ChurchBeauty, Architecture, and the Space Where God Dwells Christian architecture is not primarily about style or preference. It is about ordering space so that human beings learn how to dwell with God. The Church building is Eden remembered and anticipated—a place where heaven and earth meet, so that God's people can be formed and then sent back into the world. Key Biblical Insights 1. Eden Was God's Dwelling Place Eden is first described not as humanity's home, but as God's planted garden—a place of divine presence, beauty, and order. Genesis 2:8–9 — God plants the garden; trees are "pleasant to the sight." 2. Eden Is a Garden and a Mountain Scripture explicitly identifies Eden as elevated sacred space. Ezekiel 28:13–14 — "Eden, the garden of God… the holy mountain of God." 3. Eden Is a Source of Life Life flows outward from God's dwelling. Genesis 2:10–14 — A river flows out of Eden and becomes four rivers. 4. Eden Is Not the Whole World Eden is placed within creation, not identical with it. Genesis 2:8 — Eden is "in the east." Genesis 1:28 — Humanity is commanded to "fill the earth." 5. Humanity's Original Vocation Human beings are called to guard sacred space and extend its order outward. Genesis 2:15 — Adam is placed in the garden "to till and keep it." 6. Gardens and Groves as Sacred Space After the fall, God's presence continues to be associated with cultivated places. Genesis 12:6–7; 13:18; 18:1 — God appears to Abraham at the oaks of Mamre. 1 Kings 6:29–32 — The Temple is carved with palm trees, flowers, and cherubim. Psalm 92:12–14 — The righteous are "planted in the house of the LORD." Isaiah 51:3; Ezekiel 36:35 — Restoration is described as becoming "like the garden of Eden." 7. Sacred Space After the Fall God re-establishes Eden's pattern through mountains and temples. Exodus 24:9–10 — God enthroned on Sinai. Psalm 48:1–2 — Zion as the mountain of the Great King. 8. The Church as Eden Continued The Church gathers the patterns of Eden—mountain, garden, throne, and life-giving water—into one place so that God may dwell with His people. 9. Eden Fulfilled, Not Abandoned Scripture ends with Eden expanded to fill the world. Revelation 21:3 — "The dwelling of God is with men." Revelation 22:1–2 — River of Life and Tree of Life healing the nations. Why Architecture Matters Architecture forms us slowly and quietly through repeated dwelling. Ordered, beautiful space trains us for patience, reverence, and stability. The Church is not an escape from the world, but a seed of the world's renewal. Takeaway Architecture is theology you inhabit. Eden is still the pattern—and the Church is where we learn to carry that pattern into the world.

Why does college feel so much harder than you expected it to be? This episode is about the struggles associated with adjusting to college, but many of the themes are universal and apply to other life stages and transitions as well.  Some of the biggest challenges in life involve managing expectations and dealing with disappointment. These challenges often come into play when you're navigating unknowns and big milestones such as going to college, developing new relationships, getting a new job, and more. College can be one of the biggest transitions of your life—new routines, new expectations, new environments, new friendships… and often a lot of grief under the surface. Many college students may be grieving their high school experience, missing old friends and family, and feeling overwhelmed by a new environment. Depression, anxiety, and loneliness are very common, especially during the first semester. However, some people do great at first, and difficult emotions may appear later as the novelty wears off and reality sets in. In today's episode, you'll hear the story of one student who almost transferred near the end of her first semester of college. So for those of you struggling in college—or with any phase of life—please remember: YOU ARE NOT ALONE ❤️ Tessa is currently a junior in college, but she had a very difficult first semester and was seriously talking about transferring when things started to turn around. She shares how her first semester didn't match what she expected, how it impacted her confidence, and why she felt like something must be wrong with her when it seemed like everyone else was having more fun. Dr. Beth and Tessa talk about how long it can take to build real friendships, how to handle uncomfortable social situations and loneliness, and why giving yourself time (often a full year) can make a huge difference. As you'll find out in this episode, struggling doesn't mean you made the wrong choice—it often means you're right in the middle of adjusting. This episode is for anyone who feels behind, left out, or overwhelmed by the pressure to “love college immediately.” Never lose faith that things can get better and that you have so much to offer others and the world. Also remember: things are often not the way they appear on social media. Social media is full of false impressions and false advertising, and most people don't post their lonely or anxious moments on Instagram. Some of the best advice from today's episode: open up, share your struggles with others, reach out, and invite people to do things. It can change their lives—and it can change yours. When you start sharing, you often find that you're not alone, and others feel less alone too. Life is very hard and incredibly beautiful at the same time. Share your unique and beautiful self with the world. You will find your people and your place—so never give up.

We don't talk about the Spirit enough, and yet he is the most vital to our daily spiritual lives, for it is the Spirit who empowers these gifts in everyone for the common good, Paul says. “Gifted hands. Gifted eyes. Gifted ears.” No hand our eyes or ears do anything. It is the brain that makes it happen. If I go brain dead, my hands fall limp. If my brain goes, so goes the sermon from my mouth. I can look through binoculars but the binoculars do not see. They are the instrument through which I see. That the brain works through the organs. And that if the brain is not there, or if it stops functioning, then all the organs stop functioning too. In the same way, Christ is the Head of the Church. His Spirit works through our gifts, which is why its important to know your giftedness and act on it. The Spirit helps us have meaning and gifts to use.

In this short Advent sermon the preacher reflects on Matthew 1:18–25, Joseph's faith amid scandal, and how God brings joy in the middle of messy, painful circumstances. Joy is defined not as a fleeting feeling but as deep confidence in God's presence, character, and promises. The message points forward to Revelation's promise of a new heaven and earth, encouraging listeners to hold a joyful hope that God is with us now and will make all things new. Hope of the Earth - Joy Matthew 1:18–25 Introduction Main Idea: Joy is a deep confidence that God is with us and is making all things new. Experiencing Joy in Hard Seasons of Life Life is filled with Pain and Confusion Joseph discovers Mary is pregnant and assumes unfaithfulness. Joseph tries to do the right thing while deeply hurt. God Meets us in the Dark God does not leave us in confusion and shame. God joins us working for the hope and peace of the world. Because God is at work, we can rejoice even as hardship continues. God brings Joy amid Sorrow God's joy does not rest on circumstances but on God's character, presence, and promises. Joy is resting in the truth that, whatever comes, God is with us. Joy means entrusting ourselves and our world to the God who will redeem and restore all creation, truly making all things new. Conclusion: Be a People of Joyful Hope (Revelation 21:1–6) Advent invites us to find our joy in the God of Mary and Joseph, who brings life out of apparent dead ends. God will dwell with us, wipe away every tear, and make all things new. Choose to live as a people of deep, resilient joy—trusting that God is with us now and that the story ends in new creation. ---- Find other Podcasts, Sermon Notes and the Bulletin here. https://www.mvcnaz.org/live Stay in touch with our Church Center App at https://www.mvcnaz.org/churchcenter Contact us through our CONNECT form at https://www.mvcnaz.org/connect   With Pastor Mike Curry.
