Relationship expert Chanel Contos has busted one of the most common online dating myths she says is plaguing modern relationships, after three years of championing its importance. “We need to break the myth that talking about consent is awkward,” she says. Her comments come as Tinder is set to launch eight new terms in an upgrade to its online Dating Dictionary. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Friday, Activists geared up for protests around the world to demand action on climate change just as a pair of major weeklong climate events were getting underway in New York City. A 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg near a Staten Island high school — not even 30 minutes after two teens were separately busted with guns in another school across the city. And in Kentucky, a judge in a rural county was fatally shot in his courthouse chambers, and the local sheriff was charged with murder in the killing, police said.

Do the people using these platforms need this? This is not compulsory listening, but then again, it kind of is. We're back to have another imperfect conversation about men, violence and consent, because we're still imperfect and we believe reflecting on behaviour is key to changing it.  We don't have all the answers, but in collaboration with Teach Us Consent and future OAM Chanel Contos, we've come up with some new Vulnerabilitea House questions to help anyone get vulnerable and think deeply about these issues.  In all honesty, we're pretty nervous about answering them, but reflecting and getting vulnerable with ourselves and others is how we do better and become the people we want to be. You can find the questions on our instagram: https://bit.ly/4dnfjvO Vulnerability is the willingness to be seen as our authentic selves, even when we don't know how others will respond. To be vulnerable is to take an emotional risk and while it does promote connection, it can also cause distress and should never be forced. So take care of yourself and others while answering these questions. Always vulnerable responsibly.  To watch this full episode on YouTube, follow this link - https://bit.ly/4fx8lWP

Humanity is currently facing a crisis. Women are falling victim to physical, sexual & emotional abuse at the hands of men & the statistics tell a sad story of a culture gone wrong.I spent the morning having a long form conversation with 2 of my best mates. We are certainly not experts, we don't have all the answers but we wanted to start a conversation & create dialogue to develop our understanding, to be accountable for what needs to change & to lead the way for other men to do the same. We understand that the we can only try to empathise with women, but we can't speak to their personal experiences as young men & because of that, we invite anyone listening to the episode or watching along to contribute to the conversation with feedback or their own perspective. Cultural change requires a collective effort. In this conversation, we discuss:- What does it mean to be a good man?- How we can take responsibility to create safer environments for women to live without looking over their shoulder or feeling uncomfortable in environments like the workplace, school & bars/clubs?- Redefining sexual abuse & giving clarity to what society has previously defined as a ‘grey area'.- Sharing the female perspectives of women we know & the work advocates like Chanel Contos are doing to help women call out in-appropriate behaviour & help men understand it. - The problematic narratives in media that creat further division instead of unity for positive change. & much more. In a world where female sexuality has been hijacked by forces such as porn, patriarchy, and male entitlement – how can we make sexual consent a priority for everyone?  Whether it's on campus, at the workplace or in their homes, Australians are shocked week after week at the violence visited upon women who are simply living their lives.   In 2023, the Universities Accord review found that sexual assault and harassment on university campuses doesn't just affect the wellbeing of students and staff, it can hold survivors back from success. As a result, campus safety has been deemed a top priority for universities, so what steps are those in positions of power taking to ensure the safety of women within university spaces and beyond?   Hear author and activist Chanel Contos, UNSW student activist and gendered violence researcher Angela Griffin, First Nations lead of the First National LGBT+ Sistergirls and Brotherboys experiences with sexual violence survey Vanessa Lee-Ah Mat, and Chair of national violence prevention foundation Our Watch, Moo Baulch, as they explore how we can utilise holistic approaches to community care when it comes to gendered violence.  UNSW is committed to creating a safe environment for all. In this episode, Julia sits down with activist, sexual consent champion and a voice for her generation, Chanel Contos. Chanel was a catalyst for transforming how consent education works in Australia. In 2021, aged just 22, she sparked a national media storm when she exposed the alarming level of sexual assault in Sydney private schools. From here, the “Teach Us Consent” Campaign was born – an online petition asking for sexual consent education in Australian schools, which quickly gained more than 44,000 signatures supported by over 6,500 testimonies of sexual assault. And less just a year later in 2022, this ground-breaking campaign resulted in fundamental changes to the Australian curriculum when holistic and age-appropriate consent education was introduced in every school, across every age group.Chanel takes us through this whirlwind journey – from that first day back in 2021, up until today, and reflects on everything she's been up to along the way. From publishing her first book, Consent Laid Bare, to her work with young changemakers as the Chair of the Global Institute for Women's Leadership's Youth Committee. She and Julia talk activist burnout, how to engage everyone (especially young men and boys) in the conversation around consent, their optimism for the future and why it's so important to be ruthless with systems and kind with people if we want to achieve lasting cultural change.CW: This episode covers themes of consent and sexual violence, and parts of this conversation may be distressing for some listeners. Consent. It's seems simple, like it is already a known standard protocol of decent human behaviour, but here we are, in 2024 with statistics like these - More than half of Australian women in their twenties have experienced sexual violence, 97% of girls and women in Australia have experienced street harassment, 1 in 5 women in Australia have been raped, with only 5% of women reporting sexual assault and only 1.7 % of sexual assault cases resulting in a conviction. These statistics are only a few that are outlined in Chanel Contos' book ‘Consent Laid Bare'.  Chanel, a young women that one night was sitting around with her girlfriends sharing the tragic tales of hook ups gone bad, only to realise it was scarily common and if her and her friends were masking sexual assault traumas that had occurred under the guise of being the socially acceptable ‘norm', just how many more women are there? So at the age of 22, she took to Instagram to respectfully poll the question of what was other girls and women's experiences, only to have such a response that her social media account exploded. From there, Chanel and her friends did a crowd fund and raised $90,000, which then help build a website and set up the petition teachusconsent.com. Chanel encouraged girls and women to leave their stories of sexual assault by naming only the perpetrators age and school. Nearly 3 years on and 7,000 testimonies, every previously hidden story has helped create data to push for change, which is exactly what is happening. Chanel and Teachusconsent.com has reformed education in schools, with consent education now being mandatory in all Australian schools from kindergarten to year 10. They have lead the charge with now making stealthing (where a male removes his condom without consent during intercourse) illegal, and received funding to create consent education material in collaboration with not-for-profit, Our Watch.  So the question lies, how does one woman manage to make such change? How do you cope when the world turns to you for guidance on what is one of the most weighing and distressing topics? And what does Chanel think is the seed for true societal change for today, as well as the generations to come?   Rebecca Bull – Creator / Executive Producer / Co-Host Zoe Weir – Co-Creator / Co – Host Sophie Jackson – Producer  Social Media – Naughty Nancy Social Media Agency Website / Brand Design – Foster Creative Video Editor – Luke MorganSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For this episode, I'm joined by NSW young woman of the year, activist and a voice for her generation Chanel Contos. Chanel is leading the charge for cultural change around consent through education and conversations like this one, and not just change for teenage girls, change for women and men of all ages. So I've asked her  to help answer my BIG question: Is Consent just about saying yes or not to having sex? In this episode we talk about the complexities of consent and how can we strive towards a world where mutual pleasure is the norm, communication is the standard practice, and that through prevention sexual assault no longer occurs.  If you feel inspired by this chat with Chanel  and you want to stay up to date with all of her amazing projects including her book Consent Laid Bare you can check out her instagram here Content Warning: This is an adult conversation. My guest today was the catalyst for fundamentally changing how consent education works in Australia. In 2021 Chanel posted on Instagram:“Have you or a close friend been sexually assaulted by someone who went to an all-boys school in Sydney?”Within 24 hours, 204 People had responded “yes” to the question, and then she had her first ever live TV interview 72 hours later.Over that weekend her friend started a website for Chanel, where she collected 6000 testimonies during the first three weeks. She started a petition demanding consent classes and 45,000 signatures later and exactly a year from the date she first posted on Instagram – after a lot of meetings and phone calls – the nine education ministers in Australia unanimously agreed and then publicly announced that they would mandate consent education.Chanel Contos is a force of nature.A fierce advocate for consent education and the brilliant brain behind the Teach Us Consent campaign. She's been instrumental in raising awareness about sexual assault and consent in Australia.Today we discuss the challenges of navigating relationships in the dating app era and explore the disturbing influence of pornography on our understanding of consent.Chanel highlights the need to extend empathy beyond our immediate circles, teaching both young men and women how they can prioritize their own desires – but most importantly, saying no when it matters most.Chanel has some valuable lessons to impart – not just about preventing sexual violence but also around creating a culture of respect and understanding. She strongly believes that showing young men that healthy, consensual relationships are something they should aspire to can ultimately help change the world. Her book, “Consent Laid Bare” is absolutely stunning. It's out right now. Thanks to our sponsor Canstar - find out more about the Canstar app at https://onelink.to/canstar-btyTickets to upcoming Melbourne live shows available here: https://www.malthousetheatre.com.au/tickets/malthouse-outdoor-stage/osher-gunsberg-better-than-yesterday/Got suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? Today is one of those powerful conversations that's community driven. It encompasses the theme of this show as our guest's movement for big change all started with a conversation.  Kath sits down with Chanel Contos to chat about ending rape culture to help women, men and queer people end the cycle of assault from both sides.  Chanel is an activist, educator, young Australian of the year nominee and now author of her new book “Consent Laid Bare” - a book that challenges the lingering inequality that reinforces rape culture and asks boys and men to become advocates for sex centered around intimacy rather than fuelled by aggression. Back in 2021 Channel was speaking to her friends about their experiences of sexual assault during high school. This prompted channel to take to instagram and ask other women about their own stories of sexual assault. The response snowballed and soon after she had a movement backed by many and an online petition to make consent education mandatory in Australian schools. It attracted 45,000 signatures. Parts of this conversation may be distressing for some listeners. The statistics Chanel shares are confronting which is why she has made it her mission to drive a conversation and impact policy change in this country about consent education. We can't talk about consent without talking about what consent is not. I'm really proud of this conversation and believe it's important to sit in the uncomfortable and the hard. But please be aware that discretion is advised before you choose to listen. And if this episode brings up anything for you please reach out to organisations like LifeLife on 13 11 14 Chanel Contos founded Teach Us Consent, a campaign that mandated consent education in Australia. In order to achieve this, she worked closely with politicians from across the political spectrum, including prime ministers. Chanel was the recipient of the Australian Human Rights Commission Young People's Medal in 2021, and in 2023 she was named NSW Young Woman of the Year for her persistent efforts towards eradicating rape culture. Chanel has also been presented with the prestigious Diana Award for her humanitarian work, and in 2022 she was listed as one of the BBC's 100 inspiring and influential women worldwide. Chanel has a Masters in Education, Gender and International Development from University College London and was recently appointed by Julia Gillard to chair the Global Institute for Women's Leadership's. She shares her message in her latest book ‘Consent Laid Bare' - riding the gap between policy makers and the experiences of young people. Calling for greater awareness, education and at its core - empathy - in sharing what is healthy intimacy. Consent is complex - particularly in a society where messages are mixed at best, toxic at worst. Chanel's book is a battle cry from a generation no longer prepared to stay silent. The conservatives and Labour party appear to be agreed on one issue on the political agenda – that is childcare. Both parties realise it will be a key battleground in the general election with polling suggesting it is of particular concern in some of the red wall seat which the conservatives need to hold onto if they are to stay in government. The UK's childcare system is one of the most expensive in the world and ranked one of the least effective according to a recent report by UNICEF. Shadow Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson joins Nuala McGovern in the studio to discuss her party's plans for reform which she says will compare with Aneurin Bevan's creation of the National Health Service. What is the role of a best friend at a deathbed? ‘We All Want Impossible Things' a new novel by Catherine Newman is funny and rude as well as very sad and it's a celebration of all sorts of love. Ash's best friend is dying and her heart is breaking but life does go on, until it stops. Someone asked ‘what's the kinkiest thing you like to do during sex? Her 17-year-old friend replied, ‘It's not really that kinky, but I guess choking.' Now 24, and listed as one of the BBC's 100 Women, Chanel wants to challenge the normalisation of sexual choking (and other acts such as spitting or slapping). She's joined on the programme by writer Rachel Thompson, author of Rough: How Violence Has Found Its Way Into the Bedroom and what We Can Do about it. They discuss why these acts are so prevalent, and whether women and girls are feeling pressured into them. Could the state pension age be raised again from 67 to 68 and what would it mean for women? In the first of our new BroadTalk series on Australian Women Changemakers, Virginia talks to Chanel Contos, whose pioneering work started a movement around holistic consent and sexuality education. In 2021, aged just 22, Chanel Contos, kicked off a nationwide media storm when she exposed the alarming level of sexual assault and an undeniable prevalence of rape culture in elite private schools across Sydney, New South Wales. It all began with a simple question on social media: “have you or anyone close to you ever experienced sexual assault from someone who went to an all-boys school?”. Within hours thousands of testimonials from school girls poured in and soon tens of thousands of Australians signed her online petition demanding consent education reform in Australian schools. With lightning speed she set up the ‘Teach Us Consent' campaign and soon had a seat at the table with the Prime Minister and key policymakers. By early 2022 she'd pulled it off! Education Ministers around Australia unanimously committed to mandating holistic and age appropriate consent education in every school, across every age group. For Chanel it was a jubilant win, but like many radical social reforms, there is always a price to pay. And as we hear in this raw and intimate discussion, Chanel is still paying it.Chanel's story is the first in our ‘Changemaker' series, in which we highlight the extraordinary efforts of some stunning, audacious and gutsy Australian women. As guest curator of a new exhibition, ‘Australian Women Changemakers', which opened at the Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD) in June 2022, BroadTalk host Virginia Haussegger has spent hundreds of hours pouring over feminist activism and advocacy, chasing that holy grail of insight about ‘what makes a changemaker?'. In the series we explore the courage, motivations and importantly the cost of being a changemaker. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We assume - but rarely name - the elephant in the room when we talk about consent: human dignity. ----- Grace Tame. Brittany Higgins. Chanel Contos. These young women have put consent and sexual assault front and centre of the national agenda, raising troubling concerns about the way men treat women. In this episode, we step back from the immediate headlines generated by the crisis. Instead, we explore what is core to all discussions of consent, but rarely named: the concern that all people - but especially women - are treated with dignity.  Tim Bowden, principal of Trinity Grammar School in Sydney, and Lynda Dunstan, Domestic and Family Violence Advisor at Anglicare, explore the environmental influences shaping the way men and women relate to each other.  Lynda particularly focuses on patterns of gender inequality that drive injustices against women, while Tim reflects on the challenge facing him as principal of an all-boys school: turning boys into men. Moral philosopher Emma Wood identifies competing visions of sex in contemporary culture that have very different implications for how we treat each other. She joins theologian John Stackhouse in calling for a substantial story promoting human dignity to ground ideas about consent.  As John Stackhouse says, “What we do with our bodies is sometimes trivial and fairly unimportant. But when we get into the zone of relating to other people and touching other people, it’s always important. Touch is never trivial. And sex is really never trivial.” ---- Emma Wood’s article on ABC Religion & Ethics 1800 Respect or 1800 737 732 Men’s Referral Service or 1300 766 491 Lifeline or 13 11 14

The issue of sexual assault brought women into the streets across Australia to demand change and over forty thousand people have signed a petition calling for consent education to be included in sex education programs in Australian schools earlier. The teaching resources have been devloped, so why is it so difficult? In February this year Chanel Contos launched a petition calling for consent to be included in Australian Schools' sex education earlier. As of May 17th over 40,000 people had signed the petition and over 6000 provided testimonies. And a number of politicians and school principals have contacted Chanel Contos to discuss what needs to be done. The attention to the issue is welcome, and people who have advocated for comprehensive sexualities and relationships education in schools are hoping that at last we will see real change. One of those people is Deb Ollis. Deb Ollis is an Associate Professor in Education at Deakin University, specialising in sexuality and relationships education. During her career that spans over 30 years, she's worked as a secondary school teacher, policy officer, curriculum consultant, curriculum writer, teacher educator and researcher. Consent classes have now been made mandatory for students in Victoria after concerns the issue wasn't being adequately and openly addressed in the education system. As a result, there’s been a call on other Australian states and territories to follow the example and teach students about sexual consent. So, should it be implemented to help kids understand what consent means? We talked to advocate Chanel Contos about the issue, who shed light on the experiences Sydney schoolgirls had with their male peers regarding sexual assault. Also on the show, we look into another law that SA might take inspiration from. In February this year, a private members bill was introduced to remove criminal penalties for the possession of small amounts of certain drugs like ecstasy and methamphetamine. While most Aussies support decriminalisation, is this something that could be implemented as law? Rape prevention campaigners have slammed the Morrison government's “confusing” new consent education campaign for schools featuring bizarre videos of a woman smearing a man's face with a milkshake.Warning the videos fail to meet the National Standards for the prevention of sexual assault through education, advocates say expert revision of all of the current content is needed to ensure it actually works, and isn't harmful. The consent videos include “examples” of a woman being concerned about swimming in a beach because of sharks and a man with a spear gun trying to convince her to get in the water, and in another using an example of a man eating a tacos to explain sexual assault.Fair Agenda and End Rape on Campus Australia's Karen Willis told news.com.au the government's newly released school resources are concerning and confusing.“Young people are more sophisticated than this content gives them credit for. And sex and consent is far more complicated than videos about milkshakes and sharks at the beach,” Ms Willis, a prevention educator with 30 years experience, said.“These resources fall well short of the national standards, and what experts know is needed to actually change behaviours and prevent abuse.”End Rape on Campus founder, Sharna Bremner, said another major concern was the videos might re-traumatise rape survivors in the classroom.“We know that in classrooms of senior students, there will be many who have already experienced rape,” she said.“This resource fails to properly consider there may be a survivor in the classroom, and even includes inaccurate and inadequate information on avenues for support and reporting.” .The resources were launched by Education Minister Alan Tudge last month and followed Brittany Higgins's allegation of a rape at Parliament House and the national outcry that followed.Former Sydney school student Chanel Contos, 22, has also launched a petition called Teach Us Consent, calling for earlier and improved sex education.Fair Agenda and End Rape on Campus Australia are calling for the government to engage violence prevention experts to replace the site's modules on consent and to review all content to ensure it meets the National Standards — including challenging the gender stereotypes that help enable gender-based violence.Ms Bremner said: “Young people want and deserve training that practically and explicitly helps them understand how to ethically navigate relationships, and to recognise — and feel armed to challenge — unacceptable or coercive behaviour. As well as how to navigate non-verbal cues. It's clear these resources weren't written by people with expertise in violence prevention.”Advocates say there are multiple issues with the Good Society site's content, including:A bizarre ‘Yes No I Don't Know' video about going into water with sharksOften, instead of directly addressing the kind of behaviours a student is actually likely to be trying to navigate, the site provides confusing videos, including about milkshakes and tacos.Includes concerning messages like ‘sexual desire can really distort our thinking'Provides incorrect and inadequate information about abuse.“We need to actively challenge the notion that sex is about men pursuing women and persisting until they relent. We need to set an expectation that everyone should be seeking affirmative, enthusiastic and informed consent, and arming young people to understand consent is not just a once-off yes/no conversation. It needs to be present the whole time,” Ms Bremner said.Renee Carr, executive director of Fair Agenda, said despite the Morrison Government's claim the program has been developed in conjunction with Our Watch and the Foundation for Young Australians, this was not the case.Ms Carr said Our Watch did not help develop these resources.Along with other organisations Our Watch was engaged to consult on a confidential basis and she said was unable to share the advice they provided to the department on...
