CHRIS TORRES (Oakland) Chris Torres (@chrstrrsmusic) is a drummer and DJ originally from Denver, CO and currently based in Oakland, California. His passion for music was fostered at an early age spending most of his teens and 20s gigging and raving in the copious Denver music scene. He hosted a radio show called the Jazz Odyssey broadcasted on KUVO 89.3fm in Denver from 2015 until his move in 2017. The show highlighted his style rooted in jazz, hip hop, fusion, world, prog, and dance music spanning past to present. Nowadays you can catch him equally comfortable behind the decks or playing drums in a jazz combo around the bay area. The mix is all about having a good time and not taking yourself too seriously. It highlights the love for deep grooves, funky rhythms, and jazz laden melodies with the intention of inspiring the listener to find their own slice of paradise. En esta edición del AfroClub empezamos con novedades discográficas, con una de las grandes voces femeninas de Cabo Verde, Elida Almeida, que nos acaba de entregar su álbum Kebrada repleto de sugerentes canciones. También, Debademba nos entrega un disco donde explorar varios ritmos africanos como el ziglibithy y el bikutsi, fusionándolo con los ritmos de la cultura mandinga.SoulJazz Orchestra es una banda canadiense con un repertorio impresionante de jazz, funk, latin y soul, repleto de sonoridad afro, y en su último trabajo lo demuestran con dos temas que escuchamos, uno de ellos recuperando los vientos del afrofunk de Ghana de los 70, y el otro versionando un tema de la Orchestra Baobab. Estos dos temas nos sirven de excusa para oír a Oscar Sulley & Uhuru Band, y así poder escuchar la sección de metales donde la SoulJazz Orchestra se ha inspirado en su aproximación a la música ghanesa; y también, para recuperar una de las primeras grabaciones de la Orchestra Baobab donde canta Ndiouga Dieng, el cantante de la Baobab que falleció el año pasado, y que con este tema queremos rendirle nuestro pequeño homenaje.La segunda parte del programa la comenzamos hablando del bikutsi, uno de los ritmos más importantes de Camerún, que se escucha fundamentalmente en Yaundé, la capital, mientras que el makossa, el otro ritmo camerunés y más conocido en occidente, se escucha sobre todo en Douala, motor financiero y económico del país. El bikutsi es un ritmo que procede de una antigua danza guerrera tribal, donde el ritmo era marcado por los golpes que los guerreros daban en el suelo durante el baile. Escuchamos en primer lugar a Los Camaroes, aprovechando que se ha reeditado su primer disco. Una banda donde cantaba Messi Martin, considerado como el modernizador del estilo. Además, tenemos a Anne-Marie Nzié, la reina del bikutsi, una auténtica diva desconocida entre nosotros hasta que cumplió 67 años, cuando realizó su única grabación a nivel internacional, donde nos demostraba su gran maestría y la calidez de su voz, ya madura. Y por último una muestra del bikutsi más comercial y bailable de finales de los 90 con Ndjang Le Zappeur.En el AfroClub de hoy también está Alpha Blondy con su tributo a Sankara, uno de los líderes revolucionarios más carismático de África, que fue asesinado hace 30 años, y al cual recordamos con este tema. Y para acabar, uno de los temas más populares de highlife de finales de los 70, del músico nigeriano Prince Nico Mbarga, cuya música trascendió a todo el continente ya que supo integrar la influencia de las guitarras de la rumba congoleña, líneas de bajo con sabor jamaicano y sonidos de Camerún, país de donde procedía su madre.
