Hello Listeners! In this episode, we had the opportunity to have a conversation with Greta Kline from Frankie Cosmos.Greta Kline as a Lead vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Frankie Cosmos, has long been regarded as one of the most insightful and significant lyricists in contemporary indie music. Yet in “Different Talking”, her lyrics soften the sharp cynicism found in previous albums is replaced with an acknowledgment of the brain's and heart's profound and inevitable vulnerabilities.“Different Talking”, the sixth and arguably finest album by New York City indie-rock band Frankie Cosmos, feels as though it arrives through space and time just like all of us. It's a collection of fragments and memories, remembered places, and reinterpreted feelings, woven together into a bright, vibrating whole: a grounded and powerful indie-rock record about growing up and the passage of time that remains wholly relevant today. The current lineup of Frankie Cosmos consists of Greta Kline, Alex Bailey, Katie Von Schleicher, and Hugo Stanley. Lyrically, “Different Talking” may be Kline's most introspective work, while musically, it's Frankie Cosmos's most diverse and textured album yet—featuring country-style guitar work, glistening synths, and impressive walls of sound. Kline has been part of the American indie scene since her teenage years, when her prolific Bandcamp releases and her 2014 indie label debut “Zentropy” earned her the nickname “the poet laureate of NYC's DIY scene.” That's a heavy title for a teenager, but her unique influence on contemporary pop music is hard to dispute. If it now seems normal to see a young girl playing synths in her bedroom, uploading songs to the internet, and quickly gaining a following—it's thanks to Kline and a few other artists and writers who celebrated and normalized the idea of DIY (especially female) genius long before it became a marketing trend for major labels.Listen full episode on Bingkai Suara with Lusiana and don't forget to follow our podcast on any podcast platforms, our Instagram Bingkai Karya, and stay updated with our recent news on www.bingkaikarya.com

Fools Fest is KCSU's annual punk festival, always set to happen around April Fools Day! Every year, KCSU gathers local punk and punk-adjacent bands to play on Colorado State University's campus, creating a unique and exciting event for all to enjoy. KCSU's music directors, Mia Templien and Ria Janapati, had the opportunity to sit down with a few of the bands performing for some in-depth interviews.Plastic Forearm started in the middle of a record store in Orlando, Florida; Boone "Mud" Gonzales found R Cooper Long through the odd method of asking everyone in the store if they play music. Not long after, the pair opened Casey Taylor Brock's old band, and they all decided to stick together. Moving to Colorado on terms of fate, Plastic Forearm is a high-energy dynamic trio, or "a country band plumb gone wrong". They find inspiration in noise rock and free jazz, but also finds their variety from artists like Frankie Cosmos and The Dead Milkmen. Their debut album "Plastic Forearm Loves The Earth" is set to drop on April 25th, 2025, with their album release show on April 26th at the Swing Station in Laporte.
This week's guest is Luke Pyenson, a food and travel journalist and author of the new book "Taste in Music: Eating on Tour with Indie Musicians". He was the longtime drummer of the critically acclaimed indie rock band Frankie Cosmos and founding drummer of cult DIY band Krill. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In a terrific new book, Taste in Music, musician Alex Bleeker (of Real Estate) and food and travel journalist Luke Pyenson (former drummer of Frankie Cosmos) cover the world of music through the foods bands eat while touring the world. In this episode, we speak with Alex and Luke about a book that brings a lot of heart and empathy to a subject that has been covered since the advent of food blogging. Any working band worth its salt cod enjoys food as much of the rest of us, filling their touring riders with subtle culinary flexes. Sure, food is the new rock and roll—and rockers love their food—but as we find out, this collection of essays from legends like Mark Ibold of Pavement, Chris Frantz of Talking Heads, and Natalie Laura Mering of Weyes Blood is more than a collection of “where bands eat”; it's an essential addition to the music writing canon and one of our favorite books of the year. On this week's episode, Ben sat down with We're from Antarctica!Easton, Pennsylvania's very own indie quintet, We're From Antarctica, emerged onto the scene in late 2018 through a series of serendipitous events that would lead Carlos “Paco” Brown (Vocals, Rhythm guitar), Jessie Rae (Vocals, Keys), Jon Blanco (Lead guitar), Mackenzie Kressley (Bass) and Christopher Kendall (Drums) to meet. The group's debut album, “The People We Knew”(2019) took off to much acclaim. The reviews are in: “The kind of music you play in the background as you make dinner for the friend you've been secretly in love with for two years now.” “Wistful make-out music.” While extensively touring through the years, the band has had the opportunity to open for national touring acts such as: Frankie Cosmos, The Unlikely Candidates, and Ryan Cabrera. Their sophomore album, “We'll Figure It Out” is releasing on September 27. Recorded December 2022-January 2024 at Headroom Studios, the album is a culmination of the sonic stylings of each member entering a new era that defines this group's sound. It's really fun having two food writers we respect, in different sections of their careers, on the show. First up is Robert Sietsema. Robert is a longtime New York City restaurant critic and neighborhood wanderer who has written for the Village Voice and Eater and who, prior to that, ran the influential underground food zine Down the Hatch. We talk about the early days of food writing and what is exciting him in NYC right now. Luke Pyenson is a food and travel writer based in New York City. His work has appeared in the Boston Globe, the New York Times, and TASTE, where he recently wrote about telephone menu hotlines. We talk about his career, drumming in the band Frankie Cosmos (where Starbucks was his tour stop of choice), and his upcoming book, Taste in Music.Do you enjoy This Is TASTE? Juan Wauters - “Modus Operandi (feat. Frankie Cosmos)" from the 2023 album Wandering Rebel on Captured Tracks On today's Song of the Day, Queens-based Uruguay-born artist Juan Wauters casts a critical eye on the New Yorkers who were able to vacate the city during the COVID-19 crisis. Against a melancholy plucked melody and with swelling strings, Wauters sings, "People that have options go back to their suburbs / To them it was just like some kind of Disney World." “COVID made it clear that some people have it harder than others,” Wauters told the Tucson Weekly. “People that didn't have an option, they were locked in their apartments. It was right in your face, the inequality of the world, and I commented on that. Sometimes I feel like ‘Modus Operandi' could come off like I was resentful that everyone left the city, and people that didn't have an option could not leave. Maybe I was resentful. But also, as I now look back and have a conversation about it, I realize that it's just an observation of everyday life.” “Maybe life is supposed to be like that, that some people live more comfortably than others, and some people are supposed to have it harder. But maybe it's an opportunity to talk about it, and perhaps we can do something that, if COVID hits again, it's not unfair.” The track features guest vocals from born-and-bred New Yorker Greta Kline, better known as Frankie Cosmos. In the accompanying music video, she and Wauters wander through NYC and Montevideo, respectively. Director Fatos Marishta shared in a press release, "The idea of 'Modus Operandi' is that even though Juan lives elsewhere now, his essence stays in New York. Sometimes he's in NY, sometimes he's not, he can be anywhere. We shot through one week in two different countries with Juan wandering through the streets of Montevideo during the inaugural carnaval parade and Greta in Union Square, NYC. As they are having a conversation about New York City, Greta senses and sees Juan in the vicinity but can't seem to reach him." New York is a city located in the north east of the United States of america. It is currently home to just under 9 million people and over the years, some famous bands and musicians to have come out of this city include the likes of The Velvet Underground, The Cramps, The Ramones, The New York Dolls, Television, Talking Heads, Blondie, Suicide, Kiss, The Beastie Boys,, Run DMC, A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy, Wu Tang Clan, Notorious B.I.G, Jay Z, Sonic Youth, The Strokes, LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Battles, Vampire Weekend, Diiv, Frankie Cosmos, and many more. For this city scenes we look at the story of one venue called CBGB that was a hot spot in New York City in the 1970s and 80s, it played a huge roll in the development of both new york punk, new wave and rock and roll and which hosted, often for the first time, such legendary bands and artists as The Ramones, Pattie Smith, Talking Heads, Television, Blondie, Sonic Youth. CBGB was a rock club that is synonymous with the music scene of new york of the 1970s and 80s. Patty Smith once said “CBGBs is a state of mind”. CBGB opened up in manhattan's east village in 1973. The letters in the name were an abbreviation of County, Blue Grass and Blues which were the types of music that the venue was originally intended to host but the club quickly became a hub for the emerging punk rock and new wave scenes that were developing in New York at the time. Its important to understand that during this time, New York was also in the epicenter of disco music, clubs like studio 54 and the paradise garage with legendary DJ Larry Levan playing every weekend were witnessing a legendary moment in the history of clubbing culture. New York City would also go on to on to become the birthplace of hip hop, DJs like grandmaster flash and Cool Herc that moved to new york from jamaica and brought soundsystem culture with him, ignited a whole new culture when they decided to use two turntables to switch between two record and extend the rhythm section of a disco track, that MCs would then go on to rap over. The birth of Hip Hop was just another example of the groundbreaking music was being made in new york in the 1970s and 80s. Like all good things, CBGB came to an end. In 2006 the legendary venue closed with one final concert performed by Patti Smith, an artist that had been there at the beginning in 1973. As they say though, New York is the city that never sleeps and the end of CBGB by no means meant the end of New York's prolific ability to produce world class musicians and bands.
Hello stars. What the hell is up? I'm settling into Los Angeles and after the rainstorms from last week, which caused quite a disruption here, the sun has returned, and with it my spirit to release an episode! In today's episode, I discuss what I've been up to getting rooted in the present, while admittedly being rooted in the past. I'd argue that reflecting about the past allows us to be present and to create a bright future. What the hell is up with you? WARNING: This episode of Search for Meaning with Rabbi Yoshi contains some explicit language. In the latest edition of his Search for Meaning podcast, Stephen Wise Temple Senior Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback hosts singer-songwriter Veronica Zweiback, who talks about her journey in music, as well as her journey of self-discovery in terms of gender identity.Rabbi Yoshi's niece comes from a musical family. Not only are her uncle a talented guitarist, but father plays the guitar, bass, and drums. Her mother Kimberly Marshall is a world-renowned organist and a professor of music at Arizona State, so fittingly, Veronica played piano (along with the violin, cello, classical guitar) growing up.She first began songwriting as an 8-year-old, and still remembers looking down at her handwriting as she wrote her artist name. At the time, she thought, it was just what young songwriters did—write out one's band name in cool fonts—but there may have been something deeper behind her choice."I had this alter-ego name, and this is so prescient and cute thinking back now," she says. "It was so telling. It was my name backwards, which was 'Noraa,' because my name at birth was Aaron ... There's always this cycle as an artist, especially for songwriters. There's this pressure to have an alter ego or a moniker, so you're often just playing with identity through your songwriting, the different parts of yourself."At 16, Veronica's friends began calling her Ronnie, inspired by the song "ronnie ronaldo!" written by Greta Kline, whose own stage name—Frankie Cosmos—became the name of her band. Veronica and her band soon began to go by Soft Ronnie when playing shows."I was a little fangirl, and she was our favorite artist, and all my friends would geek out about Frankie Cosmos, her band," Veronica said. "She would start singing 'Ronnie,' and we would all go crazy, because that was my nickname. Also, the person it was about was shortening Aaron to Ronnie in the same way that I was at that time."A music project that defies naming conventions or a traditional genre, Veronica describes Soft Ronnie as sad-guitar-rock/indie-alt/DIY/anti-folk. For the uninitiated, DIY means that Soft Ronnie not only records, but produces, releases, and promotes music. Artists like Jeffrey Lewis (a comic book artist and singer-songwriter) and Daniel Johnston got their start in much the same manner. It was in fact the DIY scene that helped Veronica overcome early insecurities when it came to music. After some shop talk about music, Rabbi Yoshi and Veronica delve into how the search for gender identity maps onto her experience with and expression through music.

I skim through a few recent albums, including stuff from Carly Rae Jepsen, Frankie Cosmos, and Bruce Springsteen. I also express some dismay for a new Luke Bryan single and share a few country artists that are way better than him and his worthless garbage. As broadcast October 4, 2022 with plenty of extra triggeration for your indignation. Tonight we mark 52 years since Janis Joplin joined the infamous 27 Club, as the famed leading lady of Big Brother & The Holding Company was found dead in an LA hotel after showing up late to wrap her final album. After that, huge new tunes out this week on the indie vibe, with plenty that maybe shouldn't be played on Tuesdays since the artists are massive commodities, but with the Monday holiday we had to cover as much as we could with the missing chapter. New tunes from LCD Soundsystem, Paramore, Men I Trust, Stevie Zita, and Lunar Isles are all in there with a lot of other quality, so we recommend diving in head first!#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Big Brother & The Holding Co – I Need A Man To LoveFrankie Cosmos – FOOFRaavi – no bodiesLCD Soundsystem – new body rhumbaLunar Isles – Unwindinghanbee feat woo! – Kawakawa Part II (33:17)Men I Trust - Billie Toppy Paramore - This Is Why BUNGALOW - Seperation AnxietyBOYO - Vampire Girl Rosa Linn - Snap Joshua Bassett - LA Part III (60:20)Mazy Haze - The Weight of the Weekend Stevie Zita - Silver Surfer Orchid Mantis - Lucid Dreams Blue Canopy - Stranger At The Door MorMor - Chasing Ghosts Echowave - Hidden Spaces Part IV (91:04)Old S Resort - Tribal Maze Honeywhip - Tag Along Polycool - Unlike You Melby - Hammers Fevre - Where Your Going Tide Rider ft. dear livejournal, wow i still have a lingering covid cough. and chest congestion. i got an expectorant so you should be …expecting… some juicy phlegm coming up and at you real soon. anyone want some? i’ll put it in a little jar for you. give the jar of my phlegm a name like flossy or miranda or jynx. take it to dinner sometimes - it likes sauerkraut and blue cheese and tempeh and other bacterial foods. you can keep it on your bed side table. kiss it goodnight. think of me.DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 Kiwi Jr “Football Money” Football Money02:28 Sucker Crush “Clementine” Middle Mattress Chasm04:58 The Umbrellas “Happy” maritime e.p.07:26 Silverware “Dress in the Darkness” Deep Water11:19 bedside drama “routine” mindless matter12:56 Hairnet “Blow Dryer” anarchy is a comin’15:42 Moss Jaw “Nesting Habits” Embody18:46 Jesse Q-T and Friends “little lightning” NAPS20:57 windowsill “Starberry Jane” say for certain25:07 Cheekface “Here I Was” Therapy Island28:00 Beagles “october summer” beagles 230:22 Gen Pop “No Change” II31:01 Emma Lee Toyoda “Lady Lola” i don’t wanna play ur show33:21 Sea Moss “Bidet Dreaming” Bidet Dreaming37:09 Frankie Cosmos “Eternal” Haunted Items #339:53 Christelle Bofale “Moving On, Getting On” Swim Team43:03 Institute “Let Me Be” Readjusting the Locks45:05 Pottery “Spell” No. 147:11 Yohuna “Dead to Me” Mirroring50:06 Evan Greer “Children’s Song” she/her/they/them50:53 Captain Ahab “Ride” After The Rain My Heart Still Dreams54:34 Sweater Curse “Can’t See You Anymore” See You
dear livejournal, well it’s summer and i’ve transitioned into my summer uniform. it’s basically the same as my rest of the year uniform but with short pants instead of long pants. are they called “long pants” and “short pants” or is it just “pants” and “shorts”? i have a lot of thoughts about my pants. i will share some of them now. i prefer wearing my jean pants because my butt looks really good in them. i don’t have any jean shorts that fit me but i did find these stretchy waist shorts that fit pretty well. last summer i ordered one from the internet and it fit so i ordered like 6 more lol. but my butt just doesn’t look as good in them. i like how jeans have the full double butt pockets. these shorts just have one butt pocket and the pocket is on the inside. i like the way jean butt pockets, which are on the outside of the pant, help draw the eyes to the butt. which is where i want the eyes to go. the jeans, with their thicker material, also just provide more support for my butt, which is important to me. but it’s just too warm in the summer to wear jean pants. so i choose to sacrifice the butt support for warm weather comfort for the season and we can all look forward to the fall and the return of my glorious bottom.DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 Evening Standards “The Baron” WORLD’S END03:31 Mermaidens “Cut It Open” You Maintain the Stain07:55 NOTS “In Glass” 311:19 Nerve Beats “Initials D.D.” Nerve Beats16:01 Cool Sounds “Temper” Gristle18:35 Quivers “Driving Rain” We’ll Go Riding on the Hearses22:04 Ana roxanne “Immortality” ~~~26:01 Primp “I Know Now” Half-Bloom29:19 Clea “Bright Blue” Fairweather33:08 No Home “[A] Lullabye” hello, this is exploitation35:58 Kiss Concert “Shit In My Hand” Look Bad/Feel Bad39:21 RAKTA “Miragem” Falha Comum45:10 Crunchcoat “With You” Mouth b/w With You47:09 Hobby Club “Bedroom” Video Days EP49:29 Frankie Cosmos “Dancing” Haunted Items #151:08 Khiis “Divooneh” Bezoar52:46 REAL THINGS “The Cave” passing showers

In this episode, I chat with New York based illustrator and musician, Lauren Martin. Lauren's sunny, smiley, vibrant illustrations and animations are full of the kind of optimism and encouragement we all need right now. Lauren's journey to full-time illustration is a recent one, having just set out on that path earlier this year. In that short amount of time, she's already carved out her unique style and quite a following and client list to go with it. She talks about how having to pause touring with Frankie Cosmos, the band she plays keyboard and guitar with, has allowed her to take this shot at illustration. And how the timing of it all was kismet. She also discusses how going to therapy, working on her personal development and going through a spiritual awakening opened up everything for her. I too, went through a similar path, and it was great to find such a kindred spirit to discuss these topics with. So I'm really excited to share this one with you all.

Pulling from her two most recent releases, 2016's Next Thing and 2015's Fit Me In EP, the songwriter now known as Frankie Cosmos and her band stop by KEXP's studios to share the story of how Kiine went from making songs in her bedroom to managing a tour with a full band.
