Hometown hero Eddie Chacon, who you might know as half of the duo Charles & Eddie via their ‘90s mega-hit “Would I Lie To You,” is back with his second solo album for Stones Throw Records. Thirty years after the heyday of his pop success and on the heels of his 2023 LP Sundown, Chacon’s new album Lay Low is due on Jan. 31, 2025. As a bonus, it’s produced by one of our other favorite singers — Nick Hakim. “Empire” is a stunningly soulful track featuring the multi-talented LA staple John Carroll Kirby.

SoCal artist Zooey Celeste, a new artist for your radar, has a new album produced by Nick Hakim, and will be sharing his dark, ethereal sound when he hits the stage at KCRW's School Night in Hollywood, tonight. Celeste tells us that the down-tempo sound of “Cosmic Being” “lived as a voice memo for years and then I brought it to Nick. Iit became another example of his taking something very small and intimate and giving it this huge amphitheater sound.”

[To follow along with English subtitles, visit our new YouTube channel, "KEXP Podcasts." Learn more about this episode at www.kexp.org/podcasts/el-sonido/.] On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Plouffe, listen to Bell's next pick, Nick Hakim's WILL THIS MAKE ME GOOD. Released in 2020, it is his second studio album. The album touches upon issues such as climate change, the use of medication in children and the loss of friends. Hakim judiciously layers different sounds throughout the album, often as if the album is in multiple genres at the same time. Critically, the album received better than average reviews, with some reviews praising its production and songwriting, while others criticized the somewhat uneven tone and the length. How will the boys receive this album? Come along and find out!
As broadcast April 18, 2023 with plenty of extra local bro grabs. Tonight in part 1, we highlight a good portion of David Skimming aka Lunar Isles and his new album Right Way Round. Skimming, based in Cheongju and originally hailing from Scotland, has been a prolific presence in indie over the last few years with this solo project, releasing several albums along with a couple EPs for good measure. Big tunes from some of our favorites to highlight this evening beyond that, with Magdalena Bay out with a new mini mix, Mazey Haze out with a debut EP, and plenty more worthy artists you should support beyond that.#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Lunar Isles – When It's GoneCrumb – CrushedKasan Overall feat Theo Croker & Nick Hakim – Make My Way Back HomeMichl feat Brandon – Everytime the Night Starts CallingLunar Isles – Lights OutLunar Isles – BalloonsLunar Isles – All For The BestPart II (30:43)Huck – How To Let GoMagdalena Bay – Top DogKing Krule – SeaforthRainbow Kitten Surprise – Drop Stop RollNabihah Iqbal – DreamerVacations – Next ExitHippo Campus – Moonshine Part III (57:36)Joesef – Let's Stay TogetherLaura Quinn feat Yellow Days – With The IcePleasure Nature – PerfumePearly Drops – It FollowsMazey Haze – Back to the StartFake Dad – Fashion GirlParadise Blossom – Forever, with youPart IV (87:39)SOLE feat Sun Si Kyung – Need youNogymx – Last Spring RainCoolhand Jax – 8th & 84thLutalo – Familiar FaceXelli Island – The End of UsVibropath – Got Me DownPale Dream – Heartbreak on Film

Nick Hakim - “Vertigo” from the 2022 album COMETA on ATO / PIAS. Nick Hakim has been making amorphous psych-soul since 2014 that hones in on his gorgeous buttery smooth croons. Just since 2020, he's released three projects, 2020's WIl This Make Me Good, a collaborative record with jazz saxophonist Roy Nathanson, Small Things, in 2021, and, most recently, the intimately stunning COMETA. Featuring appearances by Alex G, Helado Negro, Arto Lindsay, and DJ Dahl, with co-production from indie's go-to guy Andrew Sarlo, COMETA is a collection of romantic songs written through different lenses, guided by Hakim's own experience of falling in love in a way that made him feel like he was floating. This is best seen on our Song of the Day, “Vertigo,” in which Hakim is struck by the hypnotic feelings of falling in love. The tender track whirrs and sputters as Hakim coos, "Can't tell if it's me or the room that's moving." “The key is to find that extremity of love for yourself,” he says of the romantic themes on the record. “It's about growing into someone you want to be; it's about finding pure love within yourself when the world around us seems to be crumbling.” The song comes with a cinematic and perfectly-paired video by Asli Baykal shot at a real-life rotating house in Bosnia-Herzegovina built by Vojin Kusic for his wife, who desired a life where she could enjoy constantly-evolving views. This episode features Jaymee's best recorded advice on the subject of addiction, mental health, recovery and treatment, and how to carve out an unconventional path of sobriety utilizing abstinence and emotional intelligence. You'll hear some of the most beautiful things ever said on planet Earth about addicts, and how they are truly saints, mislabeled by the collective. The talk is a conversation between Jaymee and his student Alex K, who originally met as rehab owner and patient in 2019 at the addiction and mental health center Jaymee co-founded and formerly operated in Santa Barbara. The discussion that follows between them is one of the most informative resources on the the above subjects, as Alex K generously shares his unique story of the destruction that led him to seek treatment, and eventually to co-creating a new path forward of recovery with Jaymee; one absent of labels, diagnosis, or any idea of not being enough. New York singer/songwriter Nick Hakim has been producing records of gently psychedelic soul here for almost a decade. Occasionally, he drops the gentle psychedelia in favor of something more obviously trippy – it happens several times on his newest album, Cometa. (The title is Spanish for “kite,” although the American-born Hakim sings in English.) He is one of those singers whose voice rarely seems to rise above a whisper – and though he's probably sick of being compared to the ill-starred but still-mythic English folkie Nick Drake, Hakim's songs can sound a little like Nick Drake fronting a psychedelic soul band from the early 70s. Nick Hakim and his band perform these songs in-studio. (-John Schaefer) Set list: Vertigo, Happen, Feeling Myself

Carly Rae Jepsen is a writer's writer. “I am very excited about the idea of writing it in all directions,” Carly says — and for the making of her latest album, The Loneliest Time, that meant writing literally hundreds of songs. On this episode of Object of Sound, Hanif and Carly Rae Jepsen talk about the unique collaborative process that went into narrowing that collection of songs down to the thirteen tracks on the album. Carly opens up about the challenges and opportunities of songwriting during the pandemic, and her drive to keep challenging the idea of what a pop song can be. Inspired by Carly's recent experience at a James Taylor concert, Hanif closes the episode with a playlist of great songs to cry to. “One of the most meditative things about writing is that you kind of forget where you are,” says Nick Hakim. “If you're tapped into it, you're not really thinking about anything else.” On this episode of Object of Sound, Nick recalls the spontaneous 5:00am recordings and free writing that went into the making of his new album COMETA, out October 21. Plus, Nick treats us to a special sneak peek of Perfume—one of Hanif's favorite tracks off COMETA—and shares with us the inspiration behind the song, which beautifully captures the excitement of new love. “I came into my own and I was able to find my voice through my writing,” says artist Ravyn Lenae. The making of her album, HYPNOS, was a four-year-long journey of blood, sweat and tears—but the result is a meticulously crafted debut, a collection of songs on which Ravyn herself has curated every element, right down to individual snares and bass lines. In this episode, the first in our three part mini-series, “The Wonders of Songwriting,” Hanif and Ravyn dig into the editing process that produced the many sonic moods and colors on HYPNOS. And, in an Object of Sound exclusive, Ravyn walks Hanif through the earlier mixes of her song, ‘Inside Out,' and explains why this track in particular needed over 2,000 vocal recordings before it was just right. As broadcast September 19, 2022 with plenty of new vibes for the time off. Tonight we mark 52 years yesterday since Jimi Hendrix passed away. An artist that rose and fell in seemingly the blink of an eye, few artists can hold the torch to his four years in the music business, and his debut is still one of the most earth-shatteringly successful that the music world has ever seen. After that, there is a bevvy of new albums ready to drop in the coming weeks, with this Friday being a huge day of releases, but last Friday was no slouch. New albums to feature from The Beths, Djo, Danielle Ponder, and Whitney to highlight the first hour along with black midi coming to Seoul for the first time on December 2 to close the first half. New pop out this weekend featured some serious slaps, chief amongst them BLACKPINK's atom smasher of a new album Born Pink that made history over the weekend on Spotify. We finished in part four with new and recent Korean indie cuts, mostly standalones, with our tune of the week being from SOLE's incredible new album imagine club, which also just dropped Friday amongst the ruckus.#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Jimi Hendrix – I Don't Live TodayThe Beths – When You Know You KnowDry Cleaning – Gary AshbyJAWNY – adiosWhitney – LOST CONTROLAlex Siegel – Fairweather Friends Part II (30:33)Weyes Blood – It's Not Just Me, It's EverybodyDjo – End of BeginningNick Hakim – VertigoDEHD – EggshellsDanielle Ponder – Someone Like YouBlackmidi – Sugar/TzuBlackmidi – Dangerous Liaisons Part III (62:31)BLACKPINK – Shut DownJessie Reyez – ONLY ONEWizkid – Bad to MeFeid – ProhibidoxNoah Cyrus – I Just Want A LoverCharlie Puth – I Don't Think That I Like HerRina Sawayama – Hurricanes Part IV (92:34)Choi Yuree – ForestYU YEON WOO – diversSOSEOM – The Regret of YesterdayWitches – Whenever I Fall AsleepSOLE – ore oresucozy feat subin – EmptyLevan – You're Beautiful
Kolkata-born, Brooklyn-based drummer, engineer, producer, and entrepreneur Vishal Nayak qualifies for that minuscule list of Indian drummers who've built an artistic voice on their own terms completely devoid of stereotypical presumptions of what an 'Indian drummer' is supposed to sound like. A graduate of Berklee College Of Music 2010, his collaborators are some of the most cutting-edge artists of North American and global contemporary adult pop music, the likes of which include Nick Hakim (as ongoing tour drummer), Hannah Cohen, Empress Of, Kimbra, MorMor , among many others. His additional role as owner and operator of Black Lodge Recording and house engineer at Brooklyn's famed Figure8 Recording combine to establish what has been the first generation of truly global post-colonial Indian musicians who play a pivotal role in shaping the mindset of future generations who attempt the same, while navigating the multi-layered obstacles ranging from the socio-cultural, economical to the socio-political. In this long-form conversation, we trace the beginnings of his musical journey as the curious boy from Central Calcutta sneaking into his mother's record collection, to the lost college student who had to redefine his artistic goals, to the pro-active adult musician who takes constant challenges of the immigrant in America in stride during the course of his promising and ongoing career. Jake Sherman is everywhere at once and yet somehow maintains a certain air of mystery. There he is singing romantic 80s inspired jams. Here he comes making a jazz Hammond organ record at Dizzy's Coca-Cola Club and jamming with Larry Goldings. Don't look now but he's hanging out in LA with his friends in Scary Pockets, or with his project Jake and Abe (a duo with drummer Abe Rounds). Is that him playing on the new Rosalia record? Wait, he plays harmonica? With Jacob Collier? Maybe you heard him playing with Meshell Ndegeocello, Andrew Bird, Emily King, Bilal, Nick Hakim, or Chance the Rapper. Yes, all of this is true. But who is Jake Sherman really? Born in Boston, Jake learned classical piano by listening to his father play Bach every morning. If not for an intervention - stumbling upon the catalog of Weird Al Yankovic at 11 years old - he would have followed in his father's path or perhaps become a jazz purist. But Weird Al changed everything. Fast forward some years beyond his time studying at Berklee College of Music and it's clear Jake has found a way to combine his appreciation of great songwriting with his piano/organ-playing prowess. We spoke recently about his love of the hammond organ and Weird Al Yankovic, surrealist comedy, finding his lane, learning to sing, what he learned from Dr. Lonnie Smith, why LA is too sunny, making friends with social media, and why he keeps saying ladies' names in his songs. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.thejakesherman.com/

Cola Boyy, Faye Webster, Juan Wauters and Cherry Glazerr's Clementine Creevy discuss why it takes leaving a town or city to appreciate it, not writing any lyrics down, how to make songs catchy, using movies for inspiration, and why songwriters have no privacy anymore. Cola Boyy is a self-taught musician and singer from Los Angeles. He released his debut album, Prosthetic Boombox, in June this year. The lyrics are inspired by his real life experiences, including being a person of colour with a disability, as he was born with spina bifida and scoliosis. Joining him is Faye Webster, an artist from Atlanta whose songwriting brings together honest and emotional lyrics with rap influences and pedal steel guitar. Her latest album is I Know I'm Funny Haha. Clementine Creevy is the lead singer and guitarist in LA-based rock band Cherry Glazerr. Her music blends punk, grunge and new wave with witty lyrics, and she's collaborated with Tyler the Creator and Death Grips. Finally, Juan Wauters is a Uruguayan-born singer-songwriter. He released the album Real Life Situations, in which he reflects on all aspects of the human experience, weaving in samples of television shows, and real conversations from voice notes he recorded on his phone. The album's impressive list of collaborators includes Mac Demarco, former Music Life guest Nick Hakim, and today's host, Cola Boyy. Together the group discuss why it takes leaving a town or city to appreciate it, not writing any lyrics down, how to make songs catchy, using movies for inspiration, and why songwriters have no privacy anymore.

Max Pope, the young soulful singer born in Crystal Palace and raised in Brighton, creates music that stops you in your tracks. His songs, filled with colourful characters from his life and imagination, have always captured his unique perspective on the world and demonstrate a gift for storytelling that goes far beyond his years. Max studied at the BRIT school and has also spent time working as a gardener, work he cherishes for helping him feel connected to the world. Max's distinctive sound is steeped in influences old and new, from the soul records his mother loved and the grittier punk and blues music his dad would play him as a child, to the recent psychedelic sounds of Nick Hakim and Unknown Mortal Orchestra ,as well as being infused with the south London jazz scene that surrounds him.

As this hellish nightmare called 2020 comes to a close, I'm slowly making my rounds with all of my favorite art of the year. My first stop is with the favorite album of the past 365, Nick Hakim's sophomore release, WILL THIS MAKE ME GOOD. For our 2nd episode (yes, we made it!) I revisit a conversation with Andrew Sarlo (@sarloson) co-producer of WTMMG from this past summer, during the peak of unrest throughout the nation. We took a deep look under the hood of the project and unpack some of the themes behind the record, stories of the album process, and favorite memories/takeaways from the 2 years they spent working together on it. I also play some new tunes I'm jamming, some of my favorite cuts from WILL THIS MAKE ME GOOD, and later in the episode I feature a dj mix dedicated to one of the greatest musical subgenres, Lovers Rock. All this and more can be found in todays episode, please listen and enjoy and as always..If you enjoy the mix, be sure to support the dj! venmo: @yeafreeSupport the show (https://cash.app/$grandiorfree)
