“Black Lives Matter” is not just an expression, it is a fundamental truism in any fair society. It's deeply resonant because of the inherent and systemic injustice and violence that remains prevalent, and particularly commonplace in police forces around the country. But racists, in their willful ignorance, just don’t see it. Most racists probably don’t even know that they are racists. In 1903 W.E.B DuBois wrote “Either America will destroy ignorance or ignorance will destroy the United States.” Investigation and reform of policing has to be across the board, including all administrative and union leadership. Compelled implicit bias training can be worse than ineffectual when there’s eye-rolling involved, and there’s loads of that. Here’s an extremely modest proposal that surely won’t solve racism, but just might help root out racist elements in law enforcement. How about distributing large "Black Lives Matter" buttons to all cops. Sounds like a stupid gimmick, I know. But those who get
As we're currently celebrating Men's Health Week (10th-16th June), we thought it only fitting to chat with public figure and actor, Alex Reid, on our latest podcast episode. Hear Alex talk openly about the hurdles he and his fiancée Nicola have faced on their 5-year TTC journey and how they've navigated and supported one another during multiple baby losses. Playing the waiting game hasn't always been a bed of roses for their relationship; we love Alex's honesty about feelings and conflicts, which no doubt we can all relate to. Alex and Nicola have suffered five miscarriages during this time and they recently had their frozen embryo transfer held up by Covid-19. They're due to restart treatment at fertility clinic, Harley Medical Fertility Clinic any day now… Hear how they stay positive and hopeful whilst trying to conceive during these heartbreaking times… as well as Alex's thoughts on the law of attraction. Nicola has set up an awesome shop and community for those trying to conceive, check it out here.
I used to buy a local paper when we traveled so I could learn more about the community we were visiting. But in recent years it has become rare to find one. I now know why. Local papers have become an endangered species. Since 2006, one-third of U.S. papers have disappeared, and tens of thousands of local reporters have lost their jobs. As a result, many people don’t know what’s going on in their own communities. These places often see a drop in government accountability and voter participation, and a rise in taxes. Recently, local papers have aided epidemiologists by providing accurate information about local outbreaks of the virus. At the dawn of the digital age, the industry made a very bad business decision when publishers set up digital platforms that were free and assumed the money from advertising would continue to flow. It did not. Ad revenue dropped by 70% between 2005 and 2018. The trend started with Craigslist and eBay, but it was Google and Facebook that dealt the worst
