Talk Club, set up in a Bristol pub seven years ago, offers a space for men to get together and discuss their mental health. That's something too few of us still do, as shown by the horrible statistic that in the UK, a man dies by suicide roughly every 90 minutes – the length of a football match. With this episode recorded during Men's Health Week, and with the World Cup bringing many men together in a highly emotional state, it seemed an appropriate time to sit down with Gavin Thorpe, one of Talk Club's two founders. The clubs have rapidly expanded, to 150 branches across the country. But with suicide still the biggest killer of UK men under 50, the need to talk remains urgent. Why are we men so reluctant to open up about what's getting us down? Are Talk Club's activities moving the needle? And do young men – far more in touch with emotions than their grandads – offer hope?Content warning – this episode, as you might have guessed, contains discussions of suicide and mental ill health. But it's a great chat, and by no means all doom and gloom – hope you enjoy. The Bristol Cable is Bristol's community-owned cooperative newsroom – fiercely independent journalism that puts people before profit. Since 2014, we've been holding power to account through investigative reporting, community campaigns, and democratic media ownership. Because when journalism serves the community, not shareholders, real change becomes possible.Support independent journalism and help us bring more vital conversations to Bristol: become a Bristol Cable member.

With special guest: Dr Gideon Blecherin conversation with Bill Kable This is a topic that is not often raised in polite company or even on talkback radio. Many men would be reluctant to discuss testicular cancer even with their doctor. This is despite about 700 men being diagnosed in Australia every year, and in men aged 18-39 it is the second most common form of cancer. In this program we go to an expert at Healthy Male (formerly Andrology Australia), Dr Gideon Blecher, to find out what we should know. And there is some good news to pass on. Gideon refers to Lance Armstrong who developed this form of cancer before his later Tour de France exploits. We are told that Armstrong is a great example to show that even when the cancer has spread to other parts of the body modern treatment can lead to a full recovery. Podcast (mp3)

Listen to today's podcast... Men tend to deal with stress differently than women.  Women tend to share, while men tend to bottle the stress up inside of them.  This can eat away at them causing high blood pressure, gastrointestinal issues, sleep issues and a loss of perspective.  According to the Centers for Disease Control, men die at higher rates than women from the top 10 causes of death, with stress being one of them. Take One Action Today To Build Your #Resiliency!      So Here are today's Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating Men's Health Week: Men need to develop positive outlets to relieve their stress while they are at work. Many men suffer from ‘terminal seriousness' in the workplace.  Terminal seriousness can hamper communication, problem solving and teamwork.  So incorporate a play break and have fun. This break can help to increase productivity and creativity, while decreasing stress. The purpose of Men's Health Week is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys.  Finding outlets to work out stress throughout the day, such as squeezing that stress ball or throwing that paper airplane, can prevent stress from building and negatively impacting your health. Lighten up and play – your body and mind will thank you. Remember, If you like today's wellness tips, let me know. This Men's Health Week (from June 15), we're turning the spotlight onto dads. Because when's the last time you asked a new father how he's really doing? Findings from Movember's More Than A Provider report reveal that 1 in 5 dads feel more isolated or lonely since having kids. The study also found that fathers are 2–3 times more likely to experience mental health challenges than the average man. In this episode, the boys sit down with Dr Zac Seidler — a clinical psychologist, leading men's mental health researcher, and new dad himself — to unpack what men are really going through behind closed doors. The conversation explores the identity shift that comes with fatherhood, the challenges many dads face in staying connected, and why simple things like sport, friendship and community can have such a profound impact on men's wellbeing, relationships and longevity. It’s a raw, honest and incredibly important chat that every parent (mum or dad) can take something from. A huge thank you to Movember for the incredible work they do supporting men's health and for helping make this important conversation possible. Have you ever felt like you know what to eat but still struggle to do it consistently? In this Men's Health Week special, I'm joined by men's wellness coach, Harvard teaching fellow, and author of Eating 2.0, Jeffrey Siegel. Together, we explore why healthy eating isn't simply about willpower, meal plans, or finding the "perfect" diet. Jeff shares his personal journey from disordered eating as a teenager to helping men reconnect with their bodies and build a healthier relationship with food. We discuss the impact of our modern food environment, the challenges of ultra-processed foods, and why so many people feel disconnected from their hunger, satisfaction, and body wisdom. You'll also learn about Jeff's fascinating concept of the "family of eaters"—the different internal drivers that influence our food choices—and how curiosity, rather than judgement, can help create lasting change.Whether you're navigating your own relationship with food or supporting a partner, family member, or friend, this conversation offers practical insights and a refreshing perspective on eating well without restriction, guilt, or another diet. Why healthy eating is about more than food choicesMen's unique challenges with food and body imageThe hidden impact of the ultra-processed worldWhy diets and willpower often failRebuilding trust with your bodyThe four "inner eaters" that drive food choicesHow mindfulness and curiosity support sustainable changeWhy understanding your relationship with food matters more than following rulesConnect with Jeff Siegel:

At 21 years of age, Hugo Toovey discovered a small lump. Like many young men, he ignored it. What followed was a life-changing cancer diagnosis, months of chemotherapy, major surgery, and a lesson that would ultimately shape the rest of his life: never ignore the signs when something doesn't feel right. In this powerful Men's Health Week conversation, Hugo shares his journey through not one but two cancer diagnoses before the age of 30, the physical and emotional toll of treatment, and the challenges of rebuilding his life after years of surgeries and recovery. But this episode is about far more than cancer. Hugo speaks openly about the impact serious illness had on his mental health, the pressure many men feel to appear strong when they are struggling, and the turning point that taught him the importance of asking for help. Today, Hugo is the founder of 25 Stay Alive, a charity dedicated to changing the way young Australians think about their health. His mission is simple: encourage people to take ownership of their wellbeing earlier in life, advocate for themselves when something doesn't feel right, and understand that the choices we make today shape our health decades into the future. In this episode we discuss: • Why early detection saves lives• Learning to trust your instincts and advocate for your own health• The hidden mental health impact of serious illness• Resilience, recovery and finding purpose through adversity• The mission behind 25 Stay Alive and why "25 is the new 50" This is an honest, courageous and deeply human conversation about health, resilience, and making the most of the life we're given. This year's theme, 'One Step at a Time: Progress, Not Perfection', encourages men to make small, manageable changes and to seek support when they need it. While awareness around men's mental health has grown significantly in recent years, many men still struggle in silence with issues such as stress, burnout, loneliness, financial pressures and feelings of disconnection.
