Plattekill has everything Jess and her family are looking for in a local ski resort, located in Roxbury, New York, a 3 hour drive from New York City.Jessica grew up in Canada, and started skiing in her Dad's backpack before she was even one year old. At age 7 Jessica started a ski and race program and loved skiing from a very young age. In college, Jessica got to explore skiing in Europe and eventually found herself living in Aspen, Colorado with some friends.  Jessica was then drawn to a job in squash tournament event management in NYC and Frankfurt, Germany. This is where Jess met her husband, Peter Nicol, a professional squash player. Jessica tells us more about the sport of squash. We learn about what we would expect to see at a squash match and some of the basis rules. Squash is a physically demanding sport that requires some serious strategy. It's fast paced and a great workout. But to bring it back to skiing, Jessica knew early on that skiing was going to be part of their family life.  The family started at Mohawk Mountain (Cornwall, CT) and went on to other areas within driving distance of NYC. Since his retirement in 2014, former world #1 and current World Squash Federation VP Karim Darwish has been just has impressive off the court as he was while playing the PSA. What makes a squash club survive and thrive? Peter Nicol and Jess Winstanley, proprietors of Nicol Squash, a new four-court public club in Manhattan, talk about one recipe for success.

Welcome to the next instalment in the SquashMind Podcast series. Today I'm being joined by Jenny Duncalf. Jenny is one of the greatest players that England has ever produced. She reached world number two in December 2019. She's won ten professional tour titles. She's got 112 caps for England, which is phenomenal. She's also managed to get three silver medals at the Commonwealth Games, only being stopped on most occasions by Nicol David. She was in a generation where Nicol David was playing and arguably Nicol David was one of the greatest players to play the game. So for Jenny to become world number two and be slightly behind Nicol David, is nothing to be sniffed at. As a junior, she was the European Junior champion and she won two individual European titled as a senior as well. She managed to get two British National titles and was also part of the winning England Ladies team at the World Team Championships in 2016. She had a real good period and we talk about it in the podcast a little bit more. In 2009, she won three big titles back to back, which ultimately got her to world number two, the Soho Square Open in Egypt, the US Open and the Qatar Classic. She lost in in the World Open final in 2011 to her nemesis Nicol David. We go into quite a cool discussion about her trying to compete with Nicol and how this was. The conversation is really broad, really wide ranging and one that I think you'll find super insightful. It's so great to hear how she opens up. She is very honest about the mental side of the game, and we go into a lot of discussion around what it was like and her environment, growing up, and being coached by her father in law David Pearson, who was also the national coach in England and was the coach who produced Nick Matthew, Laura Masara, Peter Nicol also. So, you know, having someone like David as your father in law is going to put you in a good place to start a career. It's just such a cool conversation we got on really well and lots of little tips to take from what she has done in her career. She is currently the master of ceremonies for the PSA and she comes across brilliantly. She has been really well received in that. And she's also the junior Australian coach. She lives in Australia, in Brisbane, in particular with her partner, Rachel Grinham, who herself was a world number one. And we have a little discussion around how that was competing with someone you are in a relationship with and her philosophy around the junior squash in regard to Australia is insightful, really opening the mind and really got me to think a little bit about my philosophies and how things are going with the way I coach as well. She has such a wealth of knowledge being world number two, being playing for 17 years on the pro tour, winning loads of junior titles, number one in her age group, all the way through her junior ranks. And it's just a fun conversation. You can tell the passion and enthusiasm in her voice. She enjoys what she does massively and I hope you'll find a lot of takeaways and a lot of nuggets from this really insightful chat between myself and Jenny Duncalf. One small caveat, the sound recording is not great on this in the first 15 minutes of the podcast. There was quite a long delay. She was in Brisbane and I'm not sure if the distance had anything to do with it, but it gets a little bit easier as the podcast progresses, so hopefully you can stick with it because it's really insightful of what we talk about. In February, 1998 Peter Nicol reached world #1 supplanting legend Jansher Khan, and thereafter along with Jonathan Power, gave us one of the most memorable eras in the game's history. He went on to hold the number 1 ranking several times throughout his illustrious career,at one point for 24 successive months b/t January 2002 and December 2003, placing him firmly among the greatest to ever play the game. Peter talks about his career, the JP rivalry, snatching the #1 ranking from Jansher, SquashSkills and the New York based Peter Nicol Squash Academy. Speaking to that he gives great insight on the Covid 19 situation in terms of when and how to get back on court.

Our first taping of Outside The Glass before a live audience was in New York earlier this year. Kevin Klipstein, Peter Nicol and Barrett Takesian discussed what squash will look like in a few years and how we'll get there.

Canada performed admirably, reaching 6 of 7 possible podiums at last month's 2019 Pan Am Games in Peru, and calling the shots was none other than former world number 4 and 6 time Scottish national champion Martin Heath. Martin gives us his assessment of the Pan Ams, how things went for his Rochester Yellowjackets in 2018/19 and how he's grown over the years as head coach. We also reminisce about years on the circuit, particularly with respect to the impact Peter Nicol had on his playing career.

Jonathon Power was a player like none before or since. World champion, world number 1, British Open champ, 8x Canadian National champion, and Commonwealth Games gold medalist, JP was must watch squash whether it was round 1 v. a qualifier or the World Open final v. Peter Nicol. JP and I talk about the whole nine yards, including his unique development as a junior, the Peter Nicol rivalry, winning the World Open 2008 and the current "advances" in officiating.

With the 2018 Irish Open title under his belt along with several very strong performances in 2018, Tom Richards enters the new year on a high. Perhaps playing the best squash of his career, Tom and I chat about the influences during his early years, namely St. George's own Danny Lee. Throughout his professional campaign, Stephen Meads, of "who is Meads?" fame has been tremendously instrumental, and Tom is very excited to have Jesse Englebrecht on board more recently as well. We talk about what each of them have brought to the table for Tom. We also discuss some of his playing heroes, including both JP and Peter Nicol. At any rate, all of this has him playing very good squash of late, and this bodes well for 2019.

Martin Heath made it to the highest levels of the game as a player, and now he's taking that some path as a coach, developing young, elite talent. This podcast covered everything from Martin's days competing for world supremacy against the likes of Peter Nicol and Jonathan Power to his impressive run as the head coach for the University of Rochester Yellowjackets. Neil Harvey is a legend of the game of squash, and he graced In Squash with a fantastic chat that covered his early days on tour where he beat just about everyone except a certain player at the top of the table, his transition into coaching where he famously guided Peter Nicol to world number 1. We also discussed his charity work which ultimately brought him across the pond to Nova Scotia, Canada and away from his full-time coaching duties on the PSA tour.
