GM Ivan Sokolov is a former top-15 player who won major tournaments across multiple decades and became national champion of both Yugoslavia and the Netherlands. In classical chess, he scored memorable wins against Kasparov, Kramnik and Anand. In recent years, Ivan has become equally respected as a trainer and author. Most notably, he worked with the gold medal-winning Uzbek team at the 2022 Chess Olympiad, including GMs Javokhir Sindarov and Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Given Sindarov's recent success, Ivan reflects on how his game has evolved and why it was clear to him that Sindarov was both supremely talented and, at the time, somewhat unprofessional in his approach. Ivan recently released a new Chessable course, Self-Improvement for Advanced Players. We discuss chess improvement for professionals and amateurs alike, the proper role of a trainer in a player's development, preparation in the Kasparov era versus today, and memories from his legendary career. This includes reflections on his close friendship with the late GM Jan Timman. It is always an honor to hear GM Sokolov's stories and perspectives. 00:00 Introduction to Ivan Sokolov Prior interview with GM Ivan Sokolov: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm2slrqqW7s&t=209s 02:21 Insights on the Uzbek National Team Interview with Chessbase India https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnN00uNrBEQ&t=588s 09:10 Assessing Grandmaster Sinderov's Potential 12:57 The Importance of Chess History 15:56 The Role of a Trainer 19:28 Experiences Against Chess Legends 22:09 Preparing for Kasparov vs. Modern Players 28:18 The Future of Chess: Classical vs. Chess 960 32:10 Insights from Ivan's course. 36:22 Memories of the 2012 World Open and other tournaments in the US Mentioned: Sokolov vs. Shirov 1999 https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1010044 40:05 Talent vs. Hard Work in Chess 42:06 Remembering Grandmaster Yantum 46:40 Current Projects and Future Plans 50:00- Thanks to GM Sokolov for joining me! Former World #2 Peter Marshall returns to the podcast and it was well worth the wait. We begin by revisiting Peter's career, including the origins of his iconic two-handed technique, his two World Open finals against Jansher Khan, and what it was like competing against both Jansher and the legendary Jahangir Khan. The conversation then turns to the crux of the episode - the most recent controversies surrounding World #1 Mostafa Asal. We break down the controversy from El Gouna, including the highly disputed stroke and conduct stroke at 8–7 in the fifth against Diego Elias—a decision that proved decisive in the outcome of the match . We also get into his thoughts on the recent Observer article which he feels was a disservice to Asal and to the game as a whole. It's a candid discussion from an absolute legend of the game.

The Conway Show is officially heading back to where it belongs: nights! Starting Monday, February 17, Tim moves to 6–10PM — and the whole crew is fired up because that’s the vibe. Think classic Conway energy… a little “bi-winning” audio, and a whole lot of chaos. The show hits hard with headlines and heartbreak, including news involving former Dodger Terrance Gore (34) and Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek (48), plus an infuriating story out of L.A. where a thief steals an adaptive tricycle from a 9-year-old special needs boy. Michael Monks jumps on at 4:20 with a preview of his new show “Monks & Merrill,” also debuting on the 17th — and breaks down the streetlights tax proposal at City Hall that would impact City of L.A. property owners. Then it’s time to open the toy box: Dead Giveaway, Puppet Heist, and Dilly’s World Open return, followed by Jay Leno stories (including a very NoHo strip club mention) and a warm trip back to Burbank in the ’80s. Jonny, Michael Carrick and Ben Andrews break down Team England's run at World Open War, explaining the tournament format, the TAP rule changes, and the four armies they brought (Japanese, Hungarians, Soviets and US). The episode also covers practice and team selection via the BABS rankings, memorable moments from the weekend, and shoutouts to the TOs and other teams — a concise recap for players and fans interested in competitive Bolt Action team play. 35-year old GM Alex Lenderman was a World Youth Champion and has won the World Open among many other chess accomplishments, but he had never previously had the chance to play in the FIDE World Rapid & Blitz. Since it took place in his hometown this year, Alex looked at the opportunity to compete in it as “a once in a lifetime opportunity.” But since Alex is no longer a professional player and has been losing rating points in recent years he worried about how he would perform. In this interview, Alex takes us behind the scenes of his preparation (or lack thereof), how he adjusted his mindset as an amateur player, what he thought of the venue, and how he dealt with the inevitable ups and downs of two exhausting tournaments. This particular story has a happy ending, as after a decent showing in the World Rapid Alex performed even better in the World Blitz, beating GMs Sam Shankland, Le Quang Liem and others en route to shared 14th place! Not bad for “an adult decliner” as Alex called himself. Of course, Alex also touched on some of the recent controversies in the chess world, and discussed how much players knew about sagas like “jeans gate as they unfolded” It was a real treat to hear a top players perspective on this dram-filled tournament. This week's guest, GM Fidel Corrales Jimenez is an accomplished trainer, player, Chessable author and one of the busiest players on the US tournament circuit. As such a frequent competitor, Fidel has had more than his share of successes (including winning the 2023 World Open!), but I have nonetheless often wondered how he finds the time and energy to play at a high level so frequently and consistently. The 6th annual KCBS World Invitational was held over Memorial Day Weekend in Lebanon, Tenn., and on Episode 262 of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Podcast we talk it over with both of the big winners. Drew Davis of Razorracks BBQ out of Pleasant Plains, Ark., has won 28 KCBS Grand Championships during his career. But Drew and wife Chelsey picked up their biggest title when Razorracks scored a 708.548 to top the 81-team World Invitational. Razorracks also was a solid third in the Open the day before and Drew discusses the weekend, what it's like being a “canopy cooker” dealing with the elements and how he chooses whether to use his Jambo or Gateway Drum Smokers (he wins on both) on a given weekend. We also talk it over with the Grand Champion from the World Open, Brad Cox of Local Yokels BBQ from Crossville, Ill. Like Razorracks, Local Yokels is a family team with Brad's wife, Jocelyn, and their two daughters. Local Yokels had a near-flawless cook, scoring 709.72 to lead a 118-team field in the Open. It was the seventh GC in just 65 career KCBS comps and Brad gives a rundown of how they got started in competition BBQ and some keys to his success. Co-host Steve Koehler kicks off the show with a review a recent trip he and wife Donna took to Texas, where they made a tour of some popular BBQ joints - including the world-famous Franklin's in Austin. Steve said it did not disappoint. This week we discuss one of Bolt Action's truly international events, the World Open War event. Joining me on this episode is the Tournament organiser Russ, from the Southend on Sea Wargames Group and Marcus Vine from The Warlord Games Events team. It is a special event indeed for Warlord Games to partner with the organisers and we dig into why this event is such a big deal.
Nick Matthew is without question one of the greats of the game. His accomplishments at the highest level are impressive: Former World #1, 3X British Open and World Open champion, and that's the abridged version. Nick and I look back at a very special title, his 2006 British Open win. We also talk about the Nicol/Power generation which welcomed him to the tour, the special talent of Ramy Ashour, Mostafa Asal's situation, and of course his thoughts on the US Open. Check out our sponsor Open Squash at www.opensquash.org for all of their exciting growing the game initiatives.
World Government, World Religion, Precursors to the Mark of the Beast, the Israel/Palestinian Peace Agreement, WWIII and Great Endtime Revival. These are the events we should be watching right now. We will discuss a prophetic World Review on this open-line edition of The Endtime Show!
