What if the book you're writing is actually about the story holding you back? In this episode, Amanda Johnson shares how twenty years of helping entrepreneurs write books revealed something most people never see: the reason you can't finish your book usually has nothing to do with time, organization, or writing skills. It's the old stories you're carrying that keep one foot on the gas and one foot on the brake. Amanda's work goes far beyond traditional book coaching. She creates what she calls "story saving" experiences where high-achieving entrepreneurs finally see the truth they've been avoiding. She tells the remarkable story of a social worker writing a "choose your own adventure" book about high-conflict divorces who spent 18 months unable to get one character right. Amanda kept trying to show her client she was writing her own husband, but the truth wasn't safe enough to see yet. After a decade of watching hybrid publishing houses destroy clients' carefully-built brands with covers that would "completely disrupt trust," Amanda's 19-year-old entrepreneurial son suggested while she cursed in the kitchen: "Mom, how about we just build a publishing house?" Now, with her son as business partner and youngest sister as creative designer, Amanda runs Saved By Story, a boutique hybrid publisher where every detail honors the transformational work her clients have done. [00:03:40] Entrepreneurial DNA Raised with entrepreneurial grandparents, it's in her DNA Accounts for rebellious spirit: entrepreneurs see problems and think "I could fix that" Thought she was going to be a Christian journalist at end of high school Got to university, asked to be part of honors program (classic books program) [00:04:40] Learning to Think Critically Four and a half years wrestling with great ideas and stories that formed civilization Hadn't been taught how to think critically or feel greatly Halfway through decided: I want to get to teens before they're in college alone and disconnected Became a history teacher to help teens think critically and wrestle with big ideas [00:05:40] Bouncing Out of the System Got classroom with all gang bangers, drug dealers, kids nobody else wanted first semester "What is the logic here? Send the newbie to barely survive?" Did it for six months, gave absolute best Realized couldn't give it her all every day and show up as good mom for toddler [00:06:20] The Online Writing Program Friend of family starting online writing instruction program "You have teaching credential, writing chops, can do it anytime when your kid is sleeping" Helped build curriculum, got really great results Went to networking events to share the program [00:07:00] The Side Business That Changed Everything Female entrepreneurs said "I don't want you to teach me to write, I need you to fix what I've written" Opened side business helping people get clear on message, audience, and engagement Quickly found story was the answer Story was also the answer to why most people weren't finishing their books [00:08:40] The Retreat Model Today Mostly retreat and community model for busy, wildly successful individuals They need time away, good excuse to say "I'm out for three days, seven days" They know how to focus and achieve goals, but book always gets pushed to back burner All of a sudden five or ten years have gone by [00:09:20] Authorship is Lonely Like Entrepreneurship Not every entrepreneur writes book to establish authority Entrepreneurs can be very lonely working from home without water cooler experiences Gets exacerbated when someone decides to write: Who am I to write? How does one do this? Having community where everybody's in same soup moves people much more quickly [00:10:40] Two Types of Clients First type (15-20%): "I need this done in three months and published in another three" Example: Client franchising business in six months, needed book published first Wrote book in less than three months, published in another three months These clients know how to block time and make it happen [00:12:40] The Choose Your Own Adventure Book Works in high conflict divorces, helps judge sort out what's best for kids Wanted to write choose your own adventure for her career Family with parents and two children, both parents get three options each All sound amazing but only one actually is best, shows destination of each choice [00:13:40] Writing the Husband Character Writing family quite unfairly, good for women but men would say "What? She didn't do anything" Couldn't get one character right, Amanda realized she was writing her husband We write what we know Readers said "No way would I put this in front of male reader, this has to be changed" [00:15:20] Breaking Generational Patterns Didn't have enough safety in herself, writing character out helped her see truth Realized all the stuff in marriage was generational Has been able to break that generational story for her own kids This is the book "You Can't Make This Story Up" [00:16:00] Fifteen Years of Seeing People Stuck Could have been wounded story or something they didn't want to talk about Sometimes they'd been dimmed in childhood or got in trouble when they got visible One foot on gas, one foot on brake even though it's for great cause and fulfilling purpose Had to figure out what the brake was [00:16:40] After That Story, Everything Changed After 15 years of stories, decided to help other creatives and entrepreneurs learn about being stuck It's not just "not organized" or "not right time" or "I'm not good writer" Those are ego's convenient way of keeping us from changing the real story That lady worked for two or three years and still rewriting it three or four years later [00:17:20] Do It In Community If our souls know that hard work is coming, of course there's resistance Answer: Write it, process it first, do it with partner who knows what you're up to Do it in community because communal experience really accelerates it [00:19:40] The 12 Month Program Structure Seven days together quarterly in person in cozy Airbnb (not conference settings) First three days: story saving work (not therapy but sort of feels like it) One day: go to spot together or do something fun in nature, let everything recalibrate Three days of work: goal is to get first chapter at first retreat [00:22:40] It's Always About Relationships When trying something new, doesn't want to do all the tasks "Where are the people? It's all for me. It's always been about relationship, not the actual to-dos" First person who changed everything: Ursula Lameris, sales coach [00:24:40] Learning From an Extrovert Connection was so natural to Ursula but not natural to Amanda (introvert) Put it in the book, had fun for five or six years in same neighborhood Made game out of networking: "Today I'm gonna sell this many contracts for you" Both experienced each other's work, just created relationships [00:25:20] Making Networking a Game Would go to networking meetings and talk each other up "Oh you need to talk to Amanda. Oh you need to talk to Ursula" That's how they both built really amazing businesses in a few years [00:28:00] Ten Years of Saving Self-Published Authors After 10 years helping individuals self-publish, people started looking at hybrid publishing Needed imprint for their position, status, industry Would try different hybrid houses, then call Amanda to come save it Couldn't believe what she was seeing [00:29:20] The 19-Year-Old's Solution Son said: "Mom, how about we just build a publishing house? We'll just figure it out" He was 19 years old Always been an entrepreneur, was hustling people at garage sale at age three or four Amanda: "I don't really have time, but if you want to, I'll partner with you" [00:30:00] Saved By Story Publishing House Son is business partner, youngest sister is creative designer Boutique hybrid publishing house A lot of people who do writing process eventually move through publishing Do education and empowerment for people ready to publish without giving all power away [00:30:40] The Bigger Impact Vision More of what's already doing, bigger impact on personal side Narrative resilience work that happens when people write in community Gets to end of retreats thinking "There are only few people in this room" Dream: expanding transformational work through personal brand, speaking, facilitation [00:31:00] Narrative Tools for Every Arena Take narrative tools and skills and infuse them into places that need them Education system, mental health space Pretty much every other arena could benefit from narrative resilience right now [00:32:00] Free Content at Foreshadows Website: savedbystory.house Forward slash foreshadows has whole bunch of free content Helps anyone at any stage from "I have an idea" to "Am I on right track for publishing?" [00:33:00] Tell Your Family How to Support Figure out how to make people around you feel safer while on amazing adventure Most family members really want to support, but if we don't tell them how, they don't know how KEY QUOTES "We're made to belong. We're made to be in a community. And the way that we do that and have for millennia is by figuring out how to be reciprocal." - Amanda Johnson "Most of our family members really want to support, but if we don't tell them how, then they don't know how." - Amanda Johnson CONNECT WITH AMANDA JOHNSON

This month's guest is author Graham St. John, who joined me to discuss his new book, Strange Attractor: The Hallucinatory Life of Terence McKenna.Terence McKenna remains one of the most enigmatic voices of the psychedelic counterculture—equal parts philosopher, performer, and visionary. In this episode, we explore McKenna's mythopoetic “stoned ape” theory, his radical take on shamanism, the ‘teacher' Mushroom that leads one to the ‘indwelling of the Goddess', the mysteries of DMT and the “machine elves,” and his controversial Timewave Zero vision of history and hyperspace that embraced the I Ching and the Mayan calendar ‘2012 phenomenon.'Beyond psychedelics, McKenna was also fascinated with alchemy and Gnosticism, and while figures like Crowley, John Dee, and Gurdjieff were not embraced by McKenna, Graham nevertheless calls him a “psychedelic occultist”—a thinker whose visions of transformation resonate with centuries of esoteric tradition, even if McKenna probably would have resisted the label. Along the way, we unpack the tension between his cult of personality and his desire for academic legitimacy, and consider the legacy he left for today's psychedelic and occult communities.Unfortunately, I experienced some technical difficulties with my podcasting equipment, and the sound quality is not up to the normal standard. Send us a textIn this episode, I'm asking a question that sounds simple—but hits a lot deeper when you truly reflect on it. How confident are you in making decisions for your own life? This one was sparked by a conversation I had with my daughter about risks as you get older, and how easy it becomes to stop thinking for yourself and start following someone else's narrative. Add to that a moment from Kevin Hart on Diary of a CEO, where he said, “Nobody has the confidence in making decisions for your life like you do,” and it made me stop & think (& of course write :).We talk about why, as we get older, we become more cautious. Why following someone else's decisions feels safer—but quietly costs us freedom. Why “research mode” is often just procrastination in disguise. And why there really are no bad decisions—only decisions you can course-correct.This isn't about being reckless. It's about taking ownership. Agency. Staying in the game long enough to learn, adjust, and grow.If you've felt frustrated… boxed in… or like your life isn't quite coming together the way you hoped—this episode will help you see why.Make the decision. Then make the decision right. If this message resonates, share it with someone who needs to hear it. And as always—keep it simple, keep it moving, never settle, stay tough. Support the show
President Trump was on fire in Pennsylvania last night. In a speech that felt like a rally the president reported how the country is back 10 months after the disaster of the Biden administration and radical Democrats. The crowd cheered on President Trump as he lad out the groundwork for all the success to come, not only to Pennsylvania but to the country. Senator Ron Johnson is having a hearing today about another failed Democrat disaster, Obamacare. The hearing is focused on assessing the damage done by Obamacare and the damage is significant. Recent reports from Paragon show there is between 6 million and 24 million cases of fraudulent usage of Obamacare that costs taxpayers $27 billion per year. From phantom accounts to double enrollment to zero-enrollment, Obamacare is a complete failure completely perpetrated by Democrats. There are around 1.6 million people over the 400% poverty line that are looking at some premiums upwards of $30,000 per month. These people need to be accounted for and Senator Ron Johnson has a plan that could make it work. Republican Senators Crapo and Cassidy "Make Healthcare Affordable" plan addresses some of the issues but will not get a Democrat vote to pass. Senator Johnson has publicly stated his support to end the filibuster to get legislation passed before we are looking at another government shutdown. Senator Johnson warns of the Socialist takeover Democrats will reap on this country if Republicans fail to be bold and act now. Send us a textIn his book The G Code, Ryan Stewman writes that you have two families: your family of origin and your family of choice.Your family of origin is the one you were born into — your mom, dad, aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings. That's the family you were raised with. You didn't choose them… you inherited them.Your family of choice is completely different. This is the family you grow up with — the one you intentionally create. And you build this family in three powerful ways: spiritually, socially, and physically. In today's episode, I'm going to break down why there are some people in your family of origin you must love where they are… and leave exactly where they are, because they are not part of your future. You can love them, you can support them, but you are not responsible for staying stuck with them. Then I'll show you how to build your family of choice — the people you select who are more successful, richer, in better shape, and smarter than you. These are the people who stretch you. These are the people who challenge you. These are the people who take you to the next level.Let's get it.Support the show

Send us a textWhat if the regrets you carry aren't random—they're rooted in something deeper? In this episode, I unpack a passage from Tolstoy that struck a nerve. He named five “sins,” but I see them as something more real, more lived: regrets. These five regrets—gluttony, sloth, lust, anger & animosity, and pride—aren't just ancient ideas. They show up in our everyday lives through excess, laziness, obsession, bitterness, and ego.I walk you through each one:How it creeps inHow it disguises itselfAnd how it steals your momentumBut more importantly, I share how to spot it, study it, and outgrow it.This episode isn't about shame. It's about self-awareness. It's about learning how to grow through what you've gone through—so regret doesn't have the final word.

Every day you're selling your ideas, your value, your point of view, your leadership… and at the very least, you're selling you.In this episode, I walk you through why the first 90% of any interaction is where trust, leverage, and connection are built — and why the last 10% (the “close”) becomes effortless when you do the work upfront. You'll learn how to ask better questions, listen for real clues (curiosity), collect multiple leverage points (creativity), and guide people toward confident decisions without pressure or manipulation (communication). Send us a textIn this episode, I break down a powerful lesson from the Steve Jobs Archive about innovation, leadership, and why most people stall out in life: they stop taking risks. Jobs reminds us that you never truly “figure it out.” You're always figuring it out — and the minute you stop innovating, you start eroding.Whether you've experienced a major failure or you feel like you're finally in the lead, the danger is the same: slipping into protection mode. To hear the entire interview, please consider joining my Patreon and becoming a member; alternately, this episode can be purchased for a one-time fee. More information at www.patreon.com/RejectedReligion.My guest this month is Dr. Bastiaan van Rijn.Bastiaan is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. During his PhD, he has investigated how practitioners of different movements in the nineteenth century tried to scientifically prove life after death exists. The outcome of this project is the book Afterlife Research (forthcoming), as well as several open-access articles. Beside this, he is also interested in playful approaches to religion and divination in the contemporary West. His newest project centers on spiritual tourism. This interview takes us into the fascinating world of Mesmerism—also known as animal magnetism—and its enduring influence on the boundaries between science, mysticism, and spiritual inquiry. Bastiaan gives a brief bio of Franz Anton Mesmer, who in the late 18th century proposed that an invisible fluid flowed through all living beings, capable of healing and revealing hidden truths. Though controversial and dismissed by many, Mesmer's ideas sparked a lineage of thought that continues to shape contemporary conversations about consciousness, healing, and the legitimacy of scientific inquiry. We discuss how Mesmerism blended science and mysticism, influenced public perception, and laid the groundwork for practices ranging from hypnotism and New Thought to modern-day energetic healing. Bastiaan's own research picks up this thread, tracing how the experimental impulse to make the invisible visible evolved into afterlife studies, somnambulism, and psychical research. From there, we dive into Bastiaan's dissertation, which examines the emergence of a “scientific culture” in afterlife research—one grappling with empirical inaccessibility, unreliable intermediaries, and skeptical resistance. Through case studies of three spiritual animal magnetizers, Bastiaan uncovers how different strategies were used to stabilize claims and navigate the tension between belief and method.Ultimately, this conversation invites us to rethink what counts as scientific, Bastiaan invites us to consider not just what these researchers claimed to find, but how they tried to find it, as well as how experimental practices in esoteric and spiritual domains contribute to broader dialogues about religion, and the unseen dimensions of human experience. What emerges is a rich, transhistorical culture of inquiry—one that challenges our assumptions about science, religion, and the boundaries of legitimate knowledge.PROGRAM NOTESFind Bastiaan:Bastiaan Benjamin Van Rijn - University of FribourgBastiaan van Rijn | LinkedInInstagramResearchGate – all research[PhD Diss.] The Experimental Culture of Afterlife Research: Attempts by Spiritual Animal Magnetizers to Prove Life after Death | Request PDF(PDF) Chapter 9 Building a Typology for Intentional Transformative Experiences: Louis- Alphonse Cahagnet's Experiments with Magnetic Somnambulism and HashishBastiaan van Rijn (0000-0003-4247-9198) - ORCIDOther Resources:1784: The Marquis de Puységur and the psychological turn in the west - PubMedThe seeress of Prevorst; being revelations concerning the inner-life of man, and the inter-diffusion of a world of spirits in the one we inhabit : Kerner, Justinus Andreas Christian, 1786-1862 : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet ArchiveInvestigations of psychic/spiritual phenomena in the nineteenth century: somnambulism and spiritualism, 1811-1860A Republic of Mind and Spirit – Wonderful history of Metaphysics in the USA

From broke to building empires: Why school knowledge isn't enough - and the daily habits that separate millionaires from dreamers. In this transformative episode of Konnected Minds, a seasoned entrepreneur reveals the brutal truth about success in Ghana: the certificate ends where real education begins. Starting with just 49 cedis after resignation and employees waiting to be paid, this business mogul shares how they built multiple shops, a three-storey warehouse, and apartment units - all without a single bank loan. The conversation exposes why 80% of registered businesses in Africa are just paperwork collecting dust, while those who understand organic growth are quietly building empires. From taking children to school every morning to connect with them, to watching Frederick Casey Price videos when feeling low, this episode reveals the daily habits that compound into extraordinary success. Critical insights revealed: • Why connecting with dead mentors through their content can be more valuable than physical networking • The organic growth strategy: 10 cedis to 100 to 1,000 to 10,000 to 100,000 monthly profit • How to build from one shop to six without touching bank loans • Why knowledge is the highest-demand product nobody's selling properly • The digital opportunity: How a circle accessories seller saves 300 cedis daily through TikTok • Why waiting for employment after university means you didn't live in your time • The 1% rule: Getting just 1% of Ghana's 35 million population as customers From selling fast food on TikTok to teaching expertise online, the episode demolishes every excuse about limited resources. The guest challenges young Ghanaians to stop waiting for government jobs paying $20,000 when they can monetize their knowledge today. They reveal how someone made 3,000 cedis from 190 TikTok followers - proving that attention, not capital, is the new currency. The conversation reaches its peak with a provocative truth: poverty is harder than entrepreneurship. While everyone complains about difficulty, they forget that staying broke is the toughest job of all. This isn't another motivational sermon - it's a tactical breakdown of how to identify opportunities everywhere, from KVIP toilets generating millions to WhatsApp groups becoming revenue streams. Send us a textIn this episode, I dive deep into one of the most powerful journeys a person can take — the journey of discovering who they really are. Inspired by a passage from Earl Nightingale, I unpack what it means to “prospect for gold” within yourself — to dig past the surface and uncover the buried strengths, truths, and potential that make you who you are.I share my story of hitting rock bottom in 2017 —the moment I stopped running from myself —and how reading, writing, and reflection became the tools that helped me rebuild from the inside out. This episode is about learning to value the process of digging, even when it's uncomfortable. Because the gold is there — buried deep — and the effort you put into finding it is what shapes your fulfillment in life.If you've ever felt stuck, lost, or uncertain about who you are or what's next, this episode will remind you that the most interesting and rewarding journey you'll ever take isn't out there — it's within you.Support the show
Send us a textEvery time you've been successful, it wasn't luck — it was intention. In this episode, I talk about how focus —not fortune —fuels your progress. Bethenny Frankel wrote, “Intention is a form of energy,” and she's right. The times I've felt scattered, drained, or stuck weren't because I was cursed with bad luck — it was because I wasn't being intentional. When you're intentional, you simplify your life. You tune out the noise and lock in on the signal. You start to see the leaks — the people, habits, and distractions that drain your energy — and you plug them. You stop chasing luck and start creating momentum. This episode is about bringing you back — back to focus, back to clarity, back to the thing that truly matters. Because when you can explain why you do what you do to yourself, you don't have to explain it to anyone else.Be intentional about being intentional. Focus is fuel. Luck follows focus.Support the show

To access the full interview, please consider becoming a Patreon member, or you can purchase this episode for a one time fee. www.patreon.com/RejectedReligion. My guest this month is Dr. Markus Davidsen.Markus Altena Davidsen is university lecturer in the sociology of religion at Leiden University, the Netherlands. His work on fiction-based religion includes his PhD dissertation “The Spiritual Tolkien Milieu” (2014, cum laude), several articles on Tolkien spirituality and Star Wars-based Jediism, and the edited book Narrative and Belief: The Religious Affordance of Supernatural Fiction (Routledge, 2018). His other research interests include method, theory and research history of the study of religion and religion education. Currently, he is developing a new curriculum and didactical approach for the school subject worldview and religion in Dutch secondary education. In this episode, Markus discusses the concept of fiction-based religion- a term he coined to describe spiritual movements rooted in fictional narratives like Star Wars, and The Lord of the Rings. He distinguishes fiction-based religions (FBRs) from traditional religions by highlighting their lack of historical truth claims and their embrace of narrative as a source of spiritual authority.Markus traces the roots of FBRs to earlier movements like Rosicrucianism, noting how mythic storytelling has long served as a vehicle for spiritual exploration. He shares insights from his research into Jediism and Tolkien-inspired spirituality, examining how these communities construct rituals, ethics, and cosmologies from fictional texts. The conversation also explores the motivations behind FBR engagement, from identity formation to aesthetic and existential meaning.Drawing on Tanya Luhrmann's concept of interpretive drift, Markus reflects on how belief can evolve through practice, suggesting that ritual and engagement may precede conviction.Regarding Huizinga's theory of Homo Ludens, Markus highlights the three kinds of human practices – work, play, and ritual, where play and ritual seem on the surface to be similar, but the difference is: with play, one knows they are playing ( “fiction-contract” as taken from Theatre Studies) whereas ritual might look like play, but it is based on assumptions that the entities actually exist (“actuality contract”). This lens helps frame fandom as a potential site of faith, where “belief” can emerge through ritualistic, creative engagement. Finally, the conversation turns to his current project, Nieuwe werelden openen (“Opening New Worlds”), a pedagogical initiative that uses narrative and perspective-based inquiry to help students explore existential and societal questions. He reflects on how his FBR research informs this work, bridging imaginative engagement with educational practice.PROGRAM NOTESMarkus Davidsen - Leiden UniversityMarkus Altena Davidsen publiceert boek voor docenten levensbeschouwing - Universiteit Leiden2014 The Spiritual Tolkien Milieu: A Study of Fiction‐based Religion (full text)Narrative and Belief | The Religious Affordance of Supernatural Fictio [Book]Markus Altena Davidsen - Universiteit Leiden [Articles]Handbook of Hyper-real Religions | Brill Photo Markus Davidsen by Arash NikkahMusic and Editing: Daniel P. Note: This is the Free Content version of the interview with Tjalling Janssen. The full interview can be accessed as a Tier 2 Patreon member, or purchased for a one-time fee. More information at www.patreon.com/RejectedReligion. Tjalling is a PhD researcher at the Center for History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents (HHP), based at the University of Amsterdam. His research interests include intermediary beings, magic, alchemy and Paracelsianism, and the reception of these subjects in (early to late) modernity. He investigates these topics from an environmental perspective as well as through social categories like class. His doctoral project entails an environmental reception history of the concept of elemental beings from the sixteenth to the early twentieth century, through its manifestations in magic, alchemy, literature, mining and agriculture. In this episode, we explore the shifting terrain of magical contact—where spirits, nature, and power intersect. Drawing from his article “Encounters, Evocations and Elemental Beings”, we'll trace the philosophical and esoteric implications of two very different modes of engaging with the unseen: Paracelsus's reverent encounters with elemental beings, and Dr. Rudd's ritual evocations. Along the way, we'll unpack the role of monsters, the ethics of spiritual mediation, and the deeper question of whether esotericism must rest on a singular, perennial foundation—or whether it can evolve, diversify, and apply to new contexts like ecology, psychedelics, tulpas, and even extraterrestrial contact. This is a conversation about relational knowing, cultural consciousness, and the future of interdisciplinary esoteric research.I have one correction to mention beforehand; Tjalling made a mistake in his wording when he mentioned the text De Meteoris (which comes up in the discussion), in his haste to explain the temporal trajectory. In all texts before De Meteoris elemental beings have souls. They are soulless from De Meteoris onwards, but that text lacks the possibility for elemental beings to acquire souls through marriage. The Liber de nymphis introduces that, and thus fulfills the implications of reciprocity and immanence (the “seeking out” or initiation of contact) that are absent from De Meteoris.
