Dr. Susannah Stevens joins Risto to discuss the article The joy of movement: the non-participant in physical education curriculum design. We talk about the joy of movement, the social construction of movement pleasure, and its role in physical education. We also discuss the unconscious exclusion of ‘joy' or ‘pleasure' from the PE curriculum. Full Cite: Stevens, S. R., & Culpan, I. (2021). Physical Education classes (also known as PE or Gym) are the highlight of many children's days - the opportunity to physically move and take a mental break is understandably needed. Other kids are not as keen on PE and may feel anxious and timid in PE class. Kelly and Kristi have a suggestion: Make yoga part of the PE curriculum! In this episode of Mindful Conversations with KAY, we discuss: *Inclusivity in the PE space *How yoga practices and activities fit easily into a PE curriculum *Using yoga skills to improve and enhance sports skills and physical literacy *Celebrity athletes and yoga *PE teachers unique ability, space, and schedule to actively explore yoga *Setting up yoga activity stations and yoga-fying traditional games in your PE classes *Suggestions on how to start making yoga part of your PE classes Blogs: Yoga Theme: Sports!: https://kiddingaroundyoga.com/blog/kids-yoga-sports/ Yoga and Sports - A Strong Connection: https://kiddingaroundyoga.com/blog/yoga-kids-sports/ 5 Games to Improve Coordination: https://kiddingaroundyoga.com/blog/5-games-to-improve-coordination/ Links: Past MCwK: https://anchor.fm/kidding-around-yoga/episodes/It-is-all-FUN-and-GAMES-using-play-to-encourage-mindfulness--movement--and-connection-e1g1l2e
To quote my guest today “Let's not just simply exist but instead flourish in existence and I believe physical activity to be an integral part of this”. Speaking from my personal experience as a physiotherapist, I have heard hundreds, if not thousands of times how many of my inactive adult patients have had a negative experience of physical education, which likely played a role in the life course of their participation in physical activity. If you are anything like me, you may be curious as to why PE has historically been such a polarising subject with some children flourishing and others loathing the experience. To unravel this polarity and also provide future solutions to tackle the inequities in physical education design, I invited along Liz Durden-Myers who is a senior lecturer in physical education. Today's episode zoom's into how a physical literacy informed PE curriculum can encourage all children to flourish, not just the privileged few. Within our chat we covered a whole host of topics and took a deep dive into the 3 pillars of physical literacy, in monism, existentialism, and phenomenology and how we can use these philosophical underpinnings to shape a curriculum that unlocks every child's embodied potential. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed recoding it! So without further ado, please welcome Liz Durden-Myers. SEX! Now that I have your attention, here comes Episode 10 of Poutine Politics! When the Progressive Conservatives were elected in Ontario in June 2018, one of the items they ran on was to reform the health & physical education curriculum (including sexual education, which is basically the only part anyone focused on...) for the public school system. After a repeal process that left many people feeling bitter and a consultation process that left many people confused, the new curriculum has been introduced, leaving the rest of the people frustrated. But is it really all that bad? Are the changes being overblown, just like many things in the media? Mike and Adam delve into the "sex-ed" curriculum and give you their thoughts!
In this episode co-host Laura Chesnik provides an overview of the new health and physical education curriculum released on Wednesday August 21 by the Ontario government and what it means for educators, parents and students as they prepare for the new academic year about to get underway. Laura outlines timelines for implementation and the new
The Bill Kelly Show Podcast - The Doug Ford government's sex-ed curriculum (officially, part of the Health & Physical Education Curriculum) was released yesterday. Some have seen it as a pleasant surprise, with a lot of similarities to the 2015 Liberal curriculum, and some more up-to-date material. But the sex-ed portion did have some changes that have raised eyebrows, particularly the way in which parents are able to opt their children out. Guest: Alex Johnstone, chair of the board, Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board - The Canadian Armed Forces are investigating a member for alleged involvement in a hate network. This has brought to the forefront the processes used to screen for these connections, and what needs to change. Guest: Bernie Farber, Chair of the Canadian Anti-hate network - How will Canada's increasingly complex relationship with China be handled in the upcoming Federal election? There are still citizens detained in China, the Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou's case is still rolling out, and Canada was recently chastised by China for speaking out about events in Hong Kong? Guest: Elliot Tepper, Emeritus Professor of Political science, Carleton University
