Larry Ostola speaks with William E. Moreau about his book, The Writings of David Thompson, Volume 1. Between 1784 and 1812, David Thompson explored and traded across much of western North America, from Athabasca to the Missouri and from Lake Superior to the Columbia River's mouth. In his later years, he recounted these experiences in his autobiographical work Travels. More than just a personal narrative, Travels blends geographic exploration with intellectual reflection, offering insights into the land and Indigenous peoples he encountered. This distinguished work combines scientific observation with vivid storytelling, capturing Thompson's curiosity and deep sense of wonder. It stands as a foundational text in Canadian literature and history. The boxed set referenced includes the two companion volumes of Travels published in 2009 and 2015. It features a new transcription of Thompson's complete manuscript, critical annotations, historical and textual introductions, biographical appendices, and maps—both historical and modern. With an updated edition and a new preface by geographer John Warkentin, it remains the definitive scholarly reference for Thompson's legacy and continues to introduce his work to new generations. William E. Moreau is a teacher with the Toronto District School Board and a sessional lecturer with the University of Toronto at Scarborough. As the largest school board in the province, Toronto District School Board, looks to cut programs we hear why school boards are struggling to balance their books this year. Our guests are Neethan Shan, chair of the TDSB and Kathleen Woodcock, president of the Ontario Public School Boards' Association.
On April 28, 2025, Canadians will head to the polls and elect members of the House of Commons to the 45th Canadian Parliament – and with it, a Prime Minister. As he positions himself to become the next likely prime minister of Canada, Mark Carney is increasingly presenting himself as the last champion of diversity, equity and inclusion in an era where public and private support for such measures is waning. Plus, a new petition is calling on the Toronto District School Board to reverse its decision to rename three schools named after Sir John A Macdonald, Egerton Ryerson, and Henry Dundas. And Doug Ford outlined $40 billion in new spending promises and admitted that he wouldn't balance the provincial budget if he's re-elected. Last week, the Toronto District School Board held two virtual meetings that lasted seven hours each. In those 14 hours, trustees were set to vote on whether to receive a report on antisemitism in the county's biggest public school system—a report that offered 32 recommendations for confronting and mitigating antisemitism in public schools. Once again, this was to vote on whether to receive the report. Not to enact all 32 recommendations, but simply to accept that it was done. Why did it take 14 hours to discuss? The meetings—which The CJN's education reporter, Mitchell Consky, attended—were bombarded by mostly anti-Zionist delegates who argued that the report should not consider anti-Zionism as a contemporary form of antisemitism. On the other hand, the community saw pro-Zionist activists slam the report for trying to shoehorn antisemitism into a "diversity, equity and inclusion" framework that create a hierarchy of victimhood. Consky joins Avi Finegold and Phoebe Maltz Bovy on Bonjour Chai to explain what went on in those titanic meetings and the shifting politics at play. Toronto Palestinian Families and Toronto Jewish Families talk about their within the Toronto District School Board. Their most recent campaign was in response to a report submitted to and adopted by TDSB Trustees that explicitly conflates the political ideology of Zionism with Jewish identity.Iman and Lev both testify to an environment rife with anti-Palestinian racism and misrepresentations of what antisemitism is, even before the presentation of the report. If implemented, political expressions for Palestine would be categorized as discrimination, leaving Palestinian/allied students and educators without a voice. Since 2023, the Toronto District School Board has been working on an updated strategy to combat several categories of hate and racism in its nearly 600 schools. The update will cover hatred against more than a half dozen minority communities, including Black, Asian, Trans, Indigenous, and Jewish-but when the board suddenly added anti-Palestinian racism to the list last summer, hundreds of Jewish community members including Jewish parents, students and staff have slammed the school board for ignoring rampant Jew-hatred since Oct. 7 in classrooms, halls and field trips. Now, after consulting with 125 Jewish students and with members from 35 diverse Jewish community groups, the authors of a new report—”Affirming Jewish Identities and Addressing Antisemitism”—are tabling it in front of a committee of school board trustees on the evening of Feb. 12. The trustees will then vote on whether or not to send it along to the entire board for approval the following week. The report includes many suggestions, such as beefing up training about Jews beyond Holocaust education; making sure Jews are part of diversity, equity and inclusion work; recognizing anti-Zionism as a new form of antisemitism; and hiring more Jewish professionals for senior management positions. While some Jewish leaders are praising the report, others feel the whole concept is flawed by the board's focus on identity, and want geopolitics removed from schools entirely. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, we're joined by Shelley Laskin, a trustee representing the heavily Jewish neighbourhood of Eglinton-Lawrence-St. Paul's, who calls the meeting a historic moment for the school board; and also by Tamara Gottlieb, co-founder of the Jewish Educators and Families Association (JEFA), who has serious reservations about the report. As the climate crisis intensifies, the need for comprehensive climate education in schools has never been more urgent. However, in Canada, climate awareness and sustainability are not consistently integrated into the national curriculum. Where climate change is addressed, it is often confined to science classrooms, leaving gaps in students' understanding of the social, ethical, and policy dimensions of the crisis. A truly modernized education system must embed environmental responsibility across subjects, ensuring that students grow up not only informed but also empowered to take meaningful action. Without institutional support, educators often struggle to incorporate sustainability into their lessons, leading to patchy, inconsistent learning experiences for students. Beyond the classroom, children's media plays a crucial role in shaping young minds, as storytelling has the power to foster a sense of connection to the natural world, making environmental responsibility feel both urgent and personal. By examining the intersection of education, policy, and storytelling, this conversation highlights what is needed to ensure that the next generation is prepared to confront the climate crisis head-on. This episode of Beyond the Headlines will explore how education policy and media can work together to create a generation of environmentally literate citizens, featuring insights from this week's special guests. A dedicated teacher, educator, researcher, and artist, Dr. Hilary Inwood leads the Sustainability & Climate Action Network at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto. Her work centers on the critical role of education in addressing the climate crisis. Through her graduate courses on environmental and sustainability education, and her coordination of large-scale collaborations between OISE and the Toronto District School Board, Dr. Inwood is pioneering initiatives that empower teachers and embed transformative climate change education into the fabric of our schools. Mary Bredin is an award-winning television producer, media executive, and lifelong climate activist with over 25 years of experience in animation and children's media. With an international background that spans roles at Canal+, Disney Channels Worldwide, and Viasat, Mary has been at the forefront of developing engaging, climate-conscious children's programming. Her impressive portfolio includes an Emmy nomination for Justin Time, executive production for the Netflix hit True and the Rainbow Kingdom, and co-creation of Disney Junior's Pikwik Pack. Currently a consultant at Green Tiger Club Ltd., Mary brings a unique blend of creative vision and business acumen to the challenge of using media as a tool for environmental education. Developing leaders at every level of the organization is his passion and priority.
The Toronto District School Board is requesting nearly $22 million to demolish a Toronto Indigenous school and daycare and reconstruct a new one on the basis that the current structure is too emblematic of an Indigenous residential school. Plus, the Trudeau government's Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge is refusing to say whether or not the CBC's outgoing CEO Catherine Tait will be receiving an exit payment for her time at the public broadcaster. And while the Trudeau government begins to curb the number of study permits it issues, the number of international students filing asylum claims is skyrocketing, many of which are suspected to have been filed on fraudulent grounds. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has blasted the Toronto District School Board for allowing some teachers to “indoctrinate” students with anti-Israel chants during a recent field trip that was ostensibly a learning event about justice for Canada's Indigenous people. :"It's disgusting," Ford told reporters on Monday. Meanwhile, Ford's education minister, Jill Dunlop, also slammed what she called “activist” public school teachers, who she said compromised student safety and breached the trust of the parents who had signed permission forms. The event in question involved 15 public schools, which brought students to the annual Grassy Narrows River Run on Sept. 18. The rally and march spreads awareness about the First Nation community in remote Northwestern Ontario that has spent decades fighting for justice after a local factory poisoned their water system with mercury. But parents have reported that a few teachers with a pro-Palestine agenda used the event to spread their own message about a totally separate issue: the Middle East conflict. In videos posted online, they can be seen using a megaphone to lead their students in chanting anti-Israel slogans; some participants in the event are wearing keffiyehs, and carrying banners calling for "From Wabigoon (the lake near Grassy Narrows) to the Dead Sea, We will all be free." Shelley Laskin is a school board trustee who represents the heavily Jewish Ward 8 (Eglinton-Lawrence and Toronto-St. Paul's). Laskin joins The CJN Daily to explain why she demanded a special public school board meeting be held this Wednesday, Sept. 25, to look into the incident that “erodes the public trust” in Canada's largest school board. Issue 1: Healthcare for Canadians. The number of Canadians without a family doctor, currently at 6.5 million will swell to 10 million, or 25% of the national population. Meanwhile, seeing a specialist can take a year or longer in Canada and some people are dying undiagnosed. What is the a possible solution? The guests discuss the changes they observed in the school system, particularly in terms of the content being taught, such as an increased focus on politics, social justice causes, and gender issues. They talk about the impact of lockdown on their children's mental health and the challenges of monitoring their online activities. The guests also highlight the existence of a Gender and Sexuality Club that provided support to students without parental involvement. Overall, the podcast sheds light on the complexities of navigating the education system and the influence it can have on students' beliefs and identities. We are chuffed – chuffed, I tell you – to have a Party big shot on the pod today! And because Party big shots are typically busy people, we're gonna get right to it. Marit Stiles, Leader of the Ontario NDP and the Official Opposition, is our guest.Just a short backgrounder here, because we'll be diving deeper into Marit's personal story on the pod: Born in Newfoundland, as so many of the best people who don't come from Saskatchewan, are. First elected in Davenport in 2018, becoming the riding's 2nd NDP MPP. A passionate advocate for public education, and a community activist, she was a Trustee for the Toronto District School Board for 4 years, beginning in 2014. She served as President of the federal New Democratic Party from 2016 to 2018. And prior to all of that, Marit was the National Director of Public Policy and Research for ACTRA, working to strengthen Canada's arts and cultural sector. So today, we're going to find out much more about who she is, what makes her tick, and why. We'll talk about NDP policy priorities and how she intends to hold Doug Ford's feet to the fire … he's just reversed himself on the Greenbelt, but does it end there? On healthcare and education … on housing affordability and rent … And then we'll get into electoral politics … what she's doing to prepare her party to win in 2026.Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast. With back to school mere days away, we thought it would be an opportune time to revisit this episode, which serves as a powerful cautionary tale about the dangers of underfunding and neglecting education. We hope you're having a restful long weekend, and that you enjoy revisiting this old favourite.Happy labour day!---------------ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES:After a fire forced their high school to close, the Toronto District School Board decided to relocate the roughly 900 students and teachers from York Memorial Collegiate Institute to the nearby George Harvey Collegiate Institute. But George Harvey wasn't equipped to absorb all those new kids, and students showed up in September to find a school that was over-crowded, under-staffed and unsafe for them and their teachers. The York Memorial fiasco isn't just a one-off, either. The school's struggles highlight systemic challenges across Canada's largest school board, namely staffing shortages, crumbling facilities and the lack of funding to properly address those issues. And the situation may only get worse as thousands of children lag behind socially and academically after the pandemic kept them home for nearly two years. At York Memorial, it took an outcry from students, teachers and staff to spark meaningful change. What will take to get those in power to give schools the money and resources they desperately need?GUEST: Danielle Groen, Toronto-based writer and editor, wrote about York Memorial for Toronto Life
This week, the friends and family of a school principal in Toronto gathered to celebrate his life. Richard Bilkszto, sadly, took his life last month, at the age of 60, and much of the reporting on his death has focused on a DEI training and the lawsuit that he launched about it. A reminder to listeners that the claims you will hear have not been proven in court. Our guest today is a reporter whose story on Richard Bilkszto has gained international attention — and our conversation grapples with a number of difficult issues, including suicide and how it's covered in the media. Rupa Subramanya is a staff writer at The Free Press. Lean Out reached out to Kike Ojo-Thompson to request comment, and to invite her on the program. We have not yet heard back. But Kike Ojo-Thompson did release a statement to the media, which reads, in part: “The death of Richard Bilkszto is a tragedy and all of us at KOJO Institute offer our condolences to his loved ones.” It adds: “The allegations made against me and KOJO Institute within Mr. Bilkszto's lawsuit against the Toronto District School Board are false, and we are not a party to the lawsuit.” You can read KOJO's full statement here. We also reached out to Education Minister Stephen Lecce and his office for comment, but did not hear back. In addition, we contacted the Toronto District School Board for comment. It referred us to its two previous press statements, the first of which reads, in part: “The Board would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of Richard Bilkszto. Richard was a strong advocate for students, particularly for those in adult and alternative education. Throughout his over 24 years in education, he worked hard to create an environment that fostered student success for students of all ages.” The second statement reads, in part: “Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic passing of Richard Bilkszto, retaining King International Advisory Group, an experienced and well-respected investigative firm with multi-disciplinary expertise in conducting thorough investigations. Our intention is for this investigation to be conducted in a professional, sensitive and respectful manner.” You can read those statements in full here and here. The Toronto District School Board – the largest school board in the country – recently reported that more than 300 kids were involved in violent incidents this year. In March, Quebec's education minister announced he was preparing a strategy to deal with increasing violence in schools. These are just two examples of the more frequent reports of violence in schools across the country, particularly among teenagers.Dr. Tracy Vaillancourt is a professor at the University of Ottawa and Canada Research Chair in Children's Mental Health and Violence Prevention. She's on the show to explain why violence in schools is on the rise and what research tells us about how to prevent it.Questions? Comments? Ideas? Email us at thedecibel@globeandmail.com
Guest: Isabel Teotonio, education reporter The Toronto District School Board has been experiencing a staffing shortage that is leaving administrations scrambling for teachers and some parents and students worried about time missed learning. To help, the board has redeployed nearly 100 of its learning coaches and hired more than 200 additional occasional teachers but there is a domino affect to all of the shuffling and other areas are impacted. Unions are calling it a crisis and there's no quick fix. This episode was produced by Brian Bradley, Paulo Marques and Raju Mudhar.
The Toronto District School Board has become the first board in Canada to officially recognize caste based discrimination. The caste system is thought to be among the oldest forms of social hierarchy of classification in the world, and has dominated the Indian subcontinent for thousands of years. It can dictate romantic relationships, job prospects, housing, and even lead to violence. Today, reporter Uday Rana explores the beginnings of caste in Canada, and the modern impact the ancient hierarchy has on Canada's South Asian diaspora today. Guest: Isabel Teotonio, education reporter After months of neglect and violent incidents, the situation at York Memorial Collegiate Institute has reached its breaking point. Students staged a walkout last week to point to the number of issues at their school that they say has made for an unsafe learning environment.
